by BahruzOrujov

Adviser of the State Committee on Religious Associations of the Republic of Azerbaijan, independent researcher in International Relations

On February 26 of this year the Azerbaijani people commemorate the 29th anniversary of the Khojalytragedy – one of the unprecedented bloody massacres in the modern history of the world. The massacre in Khojaly is the inhuman page of the policy of ethnic cleansing and genocide committed by the Armenian aggressors against the ethnic Azerbaijani people for more than two hundred years.

29 years have passed since this ruthless tragedy. On the night of February 25-26, 1992, the Armenian armed forces, violating all the rules of international law and principles, brought heavy military weaponry into the city of Khojaly and carried out a mass murder against the peaceful population of the city that they razedit to the ground. As a result of themilitary aggressionperpetrated by the Armenian armed forces, 613 people were killed, including 106 women, 63 under age children, 70 old people. More than 1,000 civilians, including 76 children were injured in various degrees, became disabled. 1275 people were taken prisoner, 8 families were completely vanished, 25 children lost both parents, 130 children lost one parent. Of those who perished 56 were killed with particular cruelty: they were variously burned alive, decapitated or had eyes gouged out, while pregnant women were bayoneted in the abdomen.

In accordance with a February 24, 1994 Resolution of the MilliMajlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, February 26 was declared as the Day of the Khojaly genocide. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation is the first international organization to recognize Armenia as an aggressor country, and the Khojaly massacre as genocide. The parliaments of countries of the world such as Canada, Mexico, Columbia, Peru, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, the Czech Republic, Jordan, Sudan, Honduras, Indonesia, Paraguay, Djibouti,Guatemala and Panama have rebuked and recognized the Khojalymass killings as a genocidal offence. Over twenty US states, including Arizona (Senate, House), Arkansas (House), Connecticut (House), Georgia (House, Governor), Hawaii (Governor), Idaho (Governor), Indiana (Senate, Governor), Maine (House), Massachusetts (House), Minnesota (House), Mississippi (House), Montana (Governor), Nebraska (Governor), Nevada (Governor), New Jersey (Governor), New Mexico (House, Governor), Oklahoma (Senate), Pennsylvania (House), Tennessee (House), Texas (House), Utah (Governor), West Virginia (House) – have all recognized the Khojaly massacre and remembered its victims.

Nowadays, the “Justice ForKhojaly” International Awareness Campaign, which is being implemented by the OIC Youth Forum in more than 40 countries, aims to inform the international community about the facts of the Khojaly tragedy. The “Justice for Khojaly”(www.justiceforkhojaly.org) campaign was launched on 8 May 2008, at the initiative of Leyla Aliyeva, General Coordinator of the Islamic Conference Youth Forum for Dialogue and Cooperation. The campaign’s activities are also directed towards honouring the victims and keeping their memories alive, particularly by constantly informing the younger generations and supporting the survivors and seeking ways to relieve their suffering. To date, more than 120,000 people and 115 organizations have joined this campaign.

Azerbaijan Republic and its people will never forget the Khojaly tragedy, which left an indelible mark. Since then, we commemorate the memory of the victims of the genocide every year on February 26.Annual events are arranged to honor the Khojaly genocide under presidential orders of the Republic of Azerbaijan. In 2017, a nationwide march was held in Baku to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide. The world must not remain silent in the face of the Khojaly realities, and work to punish the criminals. Our only demand is to recognize the Khojalytragedy as the genocide by all countries of the world.

Note: Khojalycity – is located in the middle of the mountainous Karabakh region (Nagorny) of Azerbaijan, and it is considered the second largest residential area for ethnic Azerbaijanis after the city of Shusha in the mountainous Karabakh.

Senate polls: PTI decides to challenge Gillani’s papers in appellate tribunal

ISLAMABAD, FEB 19 (DNA) – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Friday has decided to re-challenge the nomination papers of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and joint candidate of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) for Senate elections, Yousaf Raza Gillani in appellate tribunal.

Sources told that PTI representative has obtained the verified copies from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in this regard. The decision came day after ECP had rejected the objections raised by PTI leader Fareed Rehman and approved nomination papers of Gillani, allowing him to contest the Senate elections.

On February 16, 2021, PTI had challenged Gillani’s nomination papers and accused him of concealing the facts. Yousaf Raza Gillani had not mentioned his sentence in contempt of court case in his nomination papers, PTI leader said. Fareed Rahman further said that Gillani didn’t fulfill the requirement of Article 62 of the Constitution.

While recording arguments on the objections, the counsel of PDM candidate said that his client was charged not convicted in the case and that Supreme Court (SC) had given him a symbolic sentence. The sentence of Yousaf Raza Gillani ended in 2017 and he contested the General Elections in 2018, he told. PTI’s allegations were lies.

The time of ECP was wasted on this matter and nomination papers of Yousaf Raza Gilani should be accepted, the lawyer argued. PPP leader Nayyar Hussain Bukhari said that if the objectors had read Article 63 of the Constitution, they would have not come raised this issue as this article does not apply here.

It is to be mentioned here that a total of 170 candidates had filed their nomination papers in the ECP for the elections on 48 seats in the upper house of the Parliament. 29 candidates from Punjab, 39 from Sindh, 51 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), 41 from Balochistan and 10 from the federal capital Islamabad had submitted their details.

As per schedule, the candidates can file appeals against acceptance or rejection of nomination papers on February 20 and the last date for disposing of these appeals is February 23. The revised list of candidates will be published on February 24. The candidates can withdraw their nomination papers on February 25. Polling on 48 seats will be held on the 3rd of next month at the Parliament house in Islamabad and the four provincial assemblies. = DNA
