Bailey insists Finch will be Australia T20 World Cup captain

Melbourne, Feb 28  : Selector George Bailey Sunday insisted under-fire Aaron Finch would be Australia’s skipper at this year’s Twenty20 World Cup, calling mounting criticism of his leadership and form “white noise”.

Finch’s scores of one and 12 in their opening two games against New Zealand last week, coupled with his failure to fire in the recent Big Bash League, has sparked debate over whether he is the right man for the job.

But Bailey told the Melbourne Herald Sun there was no doubt in his mind the 34-year-old opener would be leading the side in India in October.

“He’s got a terrific average, he’s the captain of this side and he’ll be the captain of this side at the World Cup,” said Bailey, one of three selectors alongside Trevor Hohns and national coach Justin Langer.

“It’s just complete white noise for me,” he added of the criticism.

Doubts around Finch have been raging, led by former selector Mark Waugh.

“His job is to score runs… no batsman is immune from being dropped when you’re not scoring runs, doesn’t matter if you’re captain or not,” said Waugh, now a pundit.

Australian media have also weighed in with the Sydney Morning Herald saying Finch was “running out of chances to book his ticket to this year’s T20 World Cup”.

Bailey — the only selector on tour in New Zealand — attributed Finch’s poor form at the Big Bash, where he averaged just 13.8, to five months spent playing cricket in biosecurity bubbles.

“He was pretty zonked,” Bailey said. “But he tried to do the right thing and get back to help a young (Melbourne) Renegades side.

“His reflection on that was that he probably should’ve sat longer out and come back a bit fresher.”

He added that Finch was hitting well in the nets in New Zealand and pointed to his outstanding record as one of the premier limited overs batsman in the world.

“He’d be in the top five or 10 leading run-scorers, and if he doesn’t have the highest strike-rate amongst them he’d be absolutely close,” he said.

“And he’s done it very, very consistently for Australia over a long period of time, and will continue to do so into the future.”

Australia’s third T20 against New Zealand is in Wellington on Wednesday.

PSL 2021, Match Preview: Karachi Kings to clash with arch-rival Lahore Qalandars today

KARACHI: The most anticipated game of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) between arch-rivals Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings will be played at the National Stadium Karachi today.

It won’t be wrong to call this match the El Clasico of the PSL.

Both sides have similar positions coming into this match with having won two out of their first three encounters. Kings – the defending champions – are, however, have a slight edge over Qalandars due to better NRR.

They’ll also have the advantage of the outcome of their previous match, the final of PSL V in which they had defeated Qalandars. The overall record of 7 wins from 11 games is also in Karachi’s favour. Qalandars have won only 4 matches.

Kings must be with high confidence after their remarkable win over Multan Sultans when they chased 198 convincingly a day before the game against Lahore.

Qalandars, on the other hand, 24 hours before seeing Karachi crushing Sultans, went down against the same opposition as their batting couldn’t post enough runs on the board.

But the past track record seems irrelevant in this contest now as Qalandars have started tremendously in the tournament and have shown better results since last year, contrasting to their performance of the first four editions.

The current form of Mohammad Hafeez will be a major source of motivation for Lahore Qalandars. The opening batsman has amassed 166 runs in 3 innings. 10 runs behind his rival in Karachi’s camp – Babar Azam.

Both the batsmen are likely to be the key players for their respective sides.Qalandars will also be hoping for some runs from Fakhar Zaman, who starred for the side against Quetta Gladiators and its captain Sohail Akhtar who is known for his aggressive batting.

Sohail Akhtar will also hope for some fireworks from Ben Dunk who has yet to show his class in the PSL. The team would surely want him to repeat what he did with Karachi in Lahore last season.

Qalandars bowling, after the departure of Rashid Khan, is very much dependent on local talent but having Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf there, it still looks formidable. They’ve also included Nepal’s Sandeep Lamichhane as a replacement to Rashid but his availability for tonight’s game is unclear.

On the other hand, Kings batting will surely pose a serious challenge to Qalandars. They have posted two scores of 190+, though failed to defend one of them but that doesn’t take any credit away from their batsmen.

Babar Azam, Sharjeel Khan, Joe Clarke, Mohammad Nabi – they all look in great form and can be a daunting task for any bowling line.

Players to watch

LOC ceasefire shall follow improved situation in IIOJK: Experts shall follow improved situation in IIOJK: Experts

Islamabad, 28 Feb 2021 – The defense experts speaking at a webinar termed the Indian willingness to restore the ceasefire agreement on the Line of Control (LOC) with Pakistan is merely an eyewash. Though the experts welcomed the Indian aspiration for peace on the LOC, they termed the move ‘getting a breathing space for their strategic gain’ and to divert the world’s attention from the actual situation in the Illegally Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

They said the agreement was inked in 2003 that was revoked by the Indian government unilaterally in 2014 to intensify atrocities in IIOJK. Pakistan shall ask India to do more in real terms to improve the peace and human rights situation in the IIOJK, and to stop unwarranted propaganda against Pakistan on the global forums.

The webinar was organized by the Development Communications Network (Devcom-Pakistan) on Saturday. The panel of experts included Chairman Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Lt. General (Retd) Talat Masood, and Lt. General (Retd) Muhammad Asad Durrani, Washington-based senior journalist Anwar Iqbal ad Devcom-Pakistan Executive Director Munir Ahmed. Among others who spoke on the occasion included Dr, Khushboo Ejaz (Lahore), Azhar Aslam (London), Muhammad Waqar Anwar (New Zealand), Sarwat Kazmi, Muhammad Siddique (Karachi), and Ramzan Kakar (Quetta).

It may be mentioned here that Pakistan and India on Thursday said that they had recommitted themselves to the 2003 ceasefire arrangement at the Line of Control and agreed to address the ‘core issues’ that could undermine peace and stability. The surprise announcement was made in a joint statement by the militaries of the two countries on a ‘hotline contact’ between their director general military operations (DGMOs), which had apparently taken place a day earlier. The conversation between Pakistani DGMO Maj Gen Nauman Zakaria and his Indian counterpart Lt Gen Paramjit Sangha was described as “free” and “frank” and held in a “cordial atmosphere”.

Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed said the ceasefire is the first step while appreciating it Pakistan shall ask the Indian government to show their seriousness by restoring the IIOJK position as it was on August 4, 2019. All the Kashmiri leaders shall be released from the illegal detention and the occupation of their lands shall be reversed.

He asked India to realize that its Pakistan bashing strategy has failed miserably. All the nations globally have seen the real Indian face after all the fake makeup initiatives have surfaced recently. For India’s face saving, the Prime Minister Modi shall come forward to convene SAARC summit to engage all the countries in peace building efforts, and to launch joint efforts against the challenges of poverty, economic recession, trade and climate change.

Lt. General (Retd) Talaat Masood prayed that the ceasefire shall last for long though he pointed out that India could not stop itself for long violating the LOC. Pakistan needs to be vigilant about the post-ceasefire movement on the LOC as it could be a strategic move to camouflage. He said the ceasefire means nothing if the situation in the IIOJK doesn’t improve, and bilateral relations do not come to a normal.

Former ISI chief Lt. General (Retd) Muhammad Asad Durrani we shall not expect any paradigm shift in the Indian mindset. The hinditua policy would continue and there will be no improvement in the IIOJK region. Terming it a respite for India, the former ISI chief said, It would turn to be a temporary ceasefire for some strategic gains that we have no idea about.

He said we shall keep on highlighting the atrocities in Kashmir and keep on asking India to do more the needful in IIOJK.

Devcom-Pakistan Executive Director Munir Ahmed said both countries are multi-ethnic nations and need to work out a way for the harmony and peaceful neighbourhood through tolerance for each other. The regional peace and prosperity depend on the peaceful living of both countries India and Pakistan. The Civil Society on both sides shall keep on raising their voices against the aggressive designs of the Indian and Pakistan governments against each other.

Pakistan only country with distinction of prevailing against terrorism:Raza Bashir Tarar

OTTAWA/DNA

Pakistan High Commissioner in Canada Raza Bashir Tarar has said that Pakistan is the only country which has the distinction of prevailing against terrorism, especially urban guerrilla warfare, and it knows the value of peace and is committed to promoting it at all levels.
“Pakistan is a responsible international player as it has already served seven times in the UN Security Council and contributed practically to the flagship activities of the UN for global and regional peace,” he said while attending an interview with Canadian radio Connect 91.5 FM today.

Speaking about Pakistan’s efforts for promotion of peace in South Asia, Raza Bashir Tarar said that incidents such as Pulwama and the subsequent capture and release of Indian pilot by Pakistan as well as the construction of Kartarpur Corridor on the one hand and inhuman treatment of Kashmiris and other minorities, including its farmers in recent days, by the Indian state on the other, were apparent to the outside world which could clearly see the Indian hypocrisy in glossing over and sidelining the Kashmir issue behind the veil of democracy and economic diplomacy.

He said the core issue between Pakistan and India was Kashmir and the South Asian diaspora in Canada, particularly the Indian community and the local Canadians could play an important role in promoting peace in South Asia by impressing upon the Indian government that its efforts to pursue a primitive ideology of Hindu supremacy were bound to fail in today’s world which firmly sees peace and tranquillity as the only way forward to further human progress and development in any society and region.

Talking about the low number of Pakistani students getting enrolled in the Canadian colleges and universities despite Pakistan’s inclusion in the Student Direct Stream, Raza Bashir Tarar said that it was unjust to suggest that there was any systemic bias against Pakistani students as the statistics shared by the Canadian authorities with Pakistan in recent days had shown a significant increase in the grant of study permits to Pakistani students despite the fact that grant of visa was a sovereign right of any country.

He said that after the inclusion of Pakistan in the Student Direct Stream launched by Canada to fast-track visa processing for international students, Pakistan had become the third largest source country in South Asia for the Canadian colleges and universities. He advised the Pakistani students desirous of placement in the Canadian educational institutions to carefully fill out their admission and visa forms, fulfil all requirement and provide requisite details and information as desired by the Canadian authorities to ensure success of their visa processing.
