Sarfaraz confident Gladiators will make strong comeback in PSL 6

Karachi : Quetta Gladiators’ skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed believes that his side is just one win away to make a strong comeback in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season six.

2019 PSL winners have lost the first four games of the PSL 6 on a trot. Sarfaraz thinks that the side now has nothing to lose going forward in the tournament.

“I still have expectations from my side and we are just one victory away. When things are not going well, luck also doesn’t favor you. I am confident that we will make a strong comeback in this tournament,” Sarfaraz said.

The 33-year-old Sarfaraz stated that in order to claim a win, Gladiators have to step up in all departments of the game.

“Gladiators have nothing to lose now. As a team, we have to do better in all three departments. Fielding has been the main factor for our loses in previous matches,” he added.

Meanwhile, Sarfaraz has been in top form in this year’s PSL. He has registered scores of 40,81 and 54 in last three outings.

Egypt and Sudan back DR Congo to mediate dam dispute

Egypt and Sudan have backed the Democratic Republic of Congo to lead negotiations on their row with Ethiopia over the mega dam on the Nile River.

A statement by foreign ministers Sameh Shoukry of Egypt and Sudan’s Mariam Al-Sadiq affirmed their support for an “enhanced structure” of negotiation sponsored by the African Union that include the US, the European Union and the UN.

The ministers also noted that a unilateral filling of the dam for the second phase would be a direct threat to their countries’ water security.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah-Al Sisi, who met the Sudanese minister, said the dam was a vital issue for both countries.

The plan for enhanced talks comes after DR Congo President Felix Tshisekedi took over as AU chairman last month.

Years of negotiations over the dam have been fruitless, including recent ones hosted by the US and the AU.

Ethiopia sees the $4.8bn (£3.2bn) Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (Gerd) as crucial to producing electricity to power its economic growth.

But it has led to bitter disputes with Egypt and Sudan, both of which are downstream and fear the large dam will greatly reduce their access to water.

Biden calls on states to prioritize vaccinations for teachers

WASHINGTON : President Joe Biden on Tuesday called on U.S. states to prioritize COVID-19 vaccinations for teachers to ensure children could return to school quickly and safely, and said every educator should receive at least one shot by the end of March.

Biden also announced that Merck & Co Inc would help make rival Johnson & Johnson’s single-shot COVID-19 vaccine, a partnership similar to those seen during World War Two.With three vaccines now available, Biden said he was confident there would be enough vaccines available for each adult in the United States by the end of May.

The Democratic president said he was upbeat about reaching his goal of delivering 100 million COVID-19 vaccine doses in his first 100 days in office, but urged Americans to remain vigilant in wearing masks and observing social distancing.

“Today’s announcements are a huge step in our effort to beat this pandemic,” Biden said in a televised statement from the White House. “But I have to be honest with you. This fight is far from over.”

Biden’s drive to get educators vaccinated more quickly comes amid a political controversy that has pitted parents pushing for schools to reopen against the teachers unions that helped put him in the White House and say the risks are still too great.

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, said Biden’s announcement was “great news for everyone who wants in-school learning.”

Biden, whose new education secretary took office on Tuesday, said increased production of the three vaccines would boost what he called a “national imperative” to reopen U.S. schools given growing mental health concerns and widening disparities caused by the challenges of remote learning.

Biden said over 30 states had already taken steps to ensure educators were vaccinated and that he was using the full authority of the federal government to direct the remaining states to follow suit.

“My challenge is this: We want every educator, school staff member, childcare worker to receive at least one shot by the end of the month of March,” he said, noting that parents were exiting the labor market in “astonishing numbers” to help their children learn remotely.

To meet that goal, Biden said the federal pharmacy program would prioritize the vaccination of pre-kindergarten through Grade 12 educators and staff, as well as childcare workers.

He said he was still pushing to have most schools open by the end of his first 100 days in office, but added that it required passage of the $1.9 trillion rescue plan working its way through Congress. The plan includes some $130 billion for the nation’s schools.

“Let’s treat in-person learning like an essential service that it is, and that means getting essential workers (who) provide that service – educators, school staff, childcare workers …. vaccinated immediately,” he said.

Vice President Kamala Harris swore in Education Secretary Miguel Cardona at the White House on Tuesday.

Cardona, the former head of Connecticut’s education department, pledged in an op-ed published by USA Today on Tuesday to convene a national summit on safe school reopening this month.

He said the department would also act as a clearing house for best practices and lessons learned during the pandemic, while updating a handbook of strategies for meeting students’ needs and addressing the loss of instructional time.

He did not endorse calls for a national summer school plan, but said academic enrichment activities, including in-person accelerated learning, tutoring, and mental health services, could start to level the playing field for the next school year.

Senate election 2021: Polling underway for 37 seats in NA, provincial assemblies

ISLAMABAD : Pakistan is all set for the high-stakes Senate polls today  with polling scheduled from 9am to 5pm.

Lawmakers are casting votes in one of the country’s most hotly contested Senate elections where the transparency of the electoral process has become a key issue.

The MPs are voting on 37 vacant seats of the Senate with 11 senators elected unopposed from Punjab. Now the polling is being held for 12 seats each of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 11 of Sindh and two of the federal capital.

MPAs from the three provincial assemblies are casting their vote for the candidates fielded from Balochistan, KP and Sindh, while MNAs will choose the representative from the federal capital.

The results are expected to be announced at 6pm for Islamabad seats while in other assemblies the winning candidates would be announced around 7pm.

Controversies around the Senate polls

The government has been accusing the Opposition of being involved in illegal activity by using money to gain votes, while the Opposition is blaming the ruling PTI for raising the open ballot issue because it is not sure of its lawmakers’ loyalties.

The blame-game became intense Tuesday when a video of Ali Haider Gilani, son of Pakistan Democratic Movement’s Senate candidate Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, emerged in which he was allegedly telling the PTI MPAs how to discard votes.

The PPP leader, however, has admitted that he was in contact with the PTI members who had approached him to seek help.

Another audio of Sindh Minister Nasir Hussain Shah was widely shared on social media in which he was allegedly talking to PTI MPAs regarding the Senate election. The minister, however, has denied he ever talked to them and referred the matter to Ali Gilani.

Gilani vs Shaikh

An epic encounter is expected in the National Assembly for the Islamabad seat where the PPP stalwart and PDM candidate Yusuf Raza Gilani are contesting against ruling party candidate Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh.

The current strength of the National Assembly is 341 (one seat – NA-75 is vacant) and the ruling party candidate apparently enjoys the support of 180 MNAs.

Shaikh’s contender Gilani enjoys the support of 161 MNAs, including 83 of the PML-N, 55 of the PPP and 15 of MMA and the rest of like-minded parties like the ANP, BNP and three out of total four independents.

Gilani has run a robust campaign. Since the balloting is secret, Gilani enjoys the advantage of hidden support from MNAs, who have been his former colleagues, friends or those who are annoyed with the government.

As for the experience of connectivity with the parliamentarians and as a politician, Gilani visibly stands head and shoulders above Shaikh. When contacted, Gilani said, “Democratic forces” were with him.

On the other hand, Shaikh, who could rightly be called the opening batsman of PM Imran Khan, is a sitting federal minister and his strength mainly lies in the personal numbers of the PTI and allies in the House.

The PDM also fears that the prime minister’s promise of development funds for MNAs could impact on the Senate elections.

Will PTI members vote for Vawda and Abro?

Another close contest is expected in Sindh where Faisal Vawda, another sitting federal minister, is contesting against the might of the PPP, which has fielded candidates from all 11 seats including seven general, two technocrat and two reserved seats for women.

The PTI has a strength of 30 MPAs in the House whereas 14 are from the Grand Democratic Alliance and 21 from the MQM.

The local chapters of the PTI have revolted against the selection of candidates with several party members openly saying they would not vote for them.

The PTI is likely to win a major chunk of seats from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa whereas the Balochistan Awam Party and allies look dominant in Balochistan.

Rind’s son withdraws in favour of BAP

PTI Balochistan Chapter chief Sardar Yar Muhammad Rind’s son Tuesday withdrew his candidature from the Senate elections in favour of the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP).

Announcing the decision, Yar Muhammad Rind said his son, Sardar Khan Rind had withdrawn his candidature after an impression that it could benefit the opposition parties during the polls, reports a local news channel.

Sardar Khan Rind had filed his papers as an independent candidate from Balochistan. Lauding his decision, Chief Minister Balochistan Jam Kamal said the step would help strengthen the coalition government in the province.

“This is a good decision for the coalition government and will help us in contesting the Senate polls in a better way,” he said, adding that Sardar Yar Muhammad Rind had never worked for his personal interest. He further thanked the PTI lawmakers for supporting the BAP candidates.

PTI’s Hafeez to get over 180 votes in hotly-contested Senate poll: Fawad

ISLAMABAD : Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry said on Wednesday Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, PTI candidate on a hotly contested Senate seat from Islamabad, will bag over 180 votes out of a total of 341.

Speaking to the media after casting his ballot, he said the opposition’s joint candidate would secure 155 votes.Fawad said that the PPP tried to buy votes but doesn’t regret resorting to such tactics.

He expressed the hope that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will take action over a leaked video involving the opposition’s candidate from Islamabad, former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s son purportedly buying votes.

A video clip surfaced the other day showing the PPP leader purportedly asking the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNAs to “sell their vote”. Ali Haider Gillani was also telling the PTI lawmakers how to waste their Senate votes.

While addressing a press conference along with PPP MNA Shazia Marri, the PPP leader Haider Gillani accepted that he had met with PTI lawmakers last week to discuss things related to Senate polls.

“I met with PTI MNAs and told them how to waste their votes. The MNAs from PTI are also my friends and I did nothing wrong,” he told the media, adding that he will meet them again on their wish.

KP province, next potential spot in China’s global poverty alleviation move

Islamabad, 03 Mar. 2021 : Thousands of Chinese political and social leaders will be gathering in Beijing for routine annual meetings of two Parliamentary bodies on March 4.

However, the “Two Sessions” this year, have significant importance both from Chinese and Pakistani perspectives.

According to a report published by Gwadar Pro on Wednesday, the meetings are being held in the backdrop of an announcement by Chinese President Xi Jinping to have eradicated absolute poverty from the country 9 years ahead of the actual schedule.

Also, the meetings are going to approve the new 5-year and 15-year plans, focusing technology as the main enhancer of the Chinese economy at home and its influence worldwide.

From Pakistan’s perspective, these meetings are crucial as Islamabad sees itself as the next battleground for the China’swar on poverty.

Pakistan is already betting heavily on CPEC as a cure for its ailing economy and outdated infrastructure. Yet it needs a systematic and well-structured programme to do away with extreme poverty, especially in rural areas.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, looks more active than others in capitalising on opportunities brought by CPEC, to alleviate poverty from its central and peripheral areas.

The KP is emerging as a strong base for a potential Chinese poverty alleviation programme, as hinted by the International Poverty Reduction Centre in China (IPRCC) and Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Nong Rong.

The KP government is not only developing two major Special Economic Zones (SEZs) under CPEC framework, but also taking measures to rehabilitate the existing industrial estates devastated due to decades of neglect.

The Swat expressway has the potential to become the most-preferred route for China-bound traffic and has presently stirred an economic revolution in northern parts of the province.

KP Economic Zones Development and Management Company (KPEZDMC) is developing,or rehabilitating a total of 17 industrial estates in the province and looks to inauguratea few more, in tribal districts bordering Afghanistan

On health front, the government filled vacant positions in health facilities and tripled the strength of health staff. It also rolled out a universal healthcare system which now covers the entire population of the province.

Such measures of the KP government have provided for much-needed groundwork in the fight against poverty.

ASEAN, Pakistan have great potential

Indonesia highly values Pakistan’s ‘Vision East Asia’ policy. The implementation of this policy, we believe will contribute to further strengthen political, economic and cultural ties with ASEAN and its member states

Exclusive

Ansar M Bhatti

ISLAMABAD: Ambassador of Indonesia Adam Tugio has said ASEAN is a dynamic organization of 10 members, spanning an area of 4.4 million square kilometers, a population of over 649 million, and a GDP exceeding US$2.9 trillion or the fifth largest economy in the world.

ASEAN and Pakistan have great potential for cooperation in various sectors. Pakistan’s total bilateral trade with ASEAN is over $7 billion while the trade between Indonesia-Pakistan reached up to $ 2.3 billion in 2020.  It suggests that there is huge scope for Pakistan to scale up its economic engagement with ASEAN through its member-states.

He expressed these views in an exclusive interview with Daily Islamabad POST.

Ambassador Tugio further said, Indonesia along with other ASEAN members continues to support close friendly ties with Pakistan as a Sectoral Dialogue Partner and an active member of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF). Indonesia supports Pakistan when it was accorded the sectoral dialogue status of ASEAN at the 26th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on 23 July 1993. Indonesia also supports Pakistan to be full dialogue partner of ASEAN. Due to moratorium the process of Full Dialogue Partner is still pending.

Despite this, Indonesia encourages Pakistan’s collaboration with ASEAN region particularly in the areas of trade & investment, education, human resources development and tourism which could bring huge economic benefits to Pakistan.

He added, ASEAN and Pakistan have many similarities including strong cultural and religious affinity. There are approximately 242 million Muslims which are about 42% of the entire population, with majorities in Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia as well Southern Thailand and parts of Mindanao in the Philippines respectively.

Those similarities serve as a reservoir of goodwill in relation between ASEAN and Pakistan. However, there are potentials still untapped and many ways to enhance the relation and the cooperation between ASEAN and Pakistan including the dialogues with the think tanks of both countries.

Talking about Pakistan’s Vision East Policy, the ambassador said, Indonesia highly values Pakistan’s ‘Vision East Asia’ policy. The implementation of this policy, we believe will contribute to further strengthen political, economic and cultural ties with ASEAN and its member states. To this end, Pakistan’s outreach to ASEAN needs to be deepened at political level among other through exchange of high-level visits and those of business community to make their presence felt.

He said, bilateral relations between the two countries are already quite excellent nowadays. So far there has been a mechanism at the technical level, bilateral consultation forums and policy dialogue, defense cooperation dialogue and Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA).  As an effort to strengthen bilateral relations we need to encourage a more structured dialogue at ministerial level to provide future directive to attain mutually beneficial objectives.

In addition, high intensity of interaction between high-ranking officials and parliamentary cooperation are necessary to further develop ties. Of equal importance is cementing of cultural bridge through two-way technical and socio-cultural cooperation, which will certainly encourage people to people contact among others. Particular reference should be made to the participation of millennial, whom we invest our efforts to build more prosperous Indonesia and Pakistan.
