US RECOGNITION OF ARMENIANS KILLING BY OTTOMAN EMPIRE IN WW-I AS ‘GENOCIDE’ IS POLITICALLY MOTIVATED: EXPERTS

Devcom-Pakistan webinar urged the Muslim leadership and the independent media to stand united against the US decision, and the EU and UN statements against the Ismaophobia for a counter narrative, just and a rational campaign against the religious prejudices.

Islamabad, MAY 1 (DNA) – Speaking at a webinar on Saturday, the geopolitical experts termed the US President Joe Biden’s decision a politically motivated step whereby he has recognized Armenians killings by the Ottoman Empire in the World War-I as “genocide”. Taking up 106 years old matter with an unfair approach by the US shows the white Christian community’s influence in US politics. It is unjust and partial decision against a long time NATO partner while the historic events and statistics reveals the facts contrary to the quoted ones for the ‘engineered recognition of a so-called genocide’.

They urged the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) to stand strong against the mala fide decision of the US president against Turkey. They also suggested the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to mobilize like minded countries to write a strong protest against the politically motivated US decision that is being engineered to pressurize Turkey for vigorously taking up Islamic values and tradition not only in Turkey but across the globe.

Development Communications Network (Devcom-Pakistan) organized the first ever webinar on the topic “US-Turkey standoff on the killings of Armenians in World War-I: Putting up the right context” on Saturday. The panel of experts included Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs chairman Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Geopolitical analyst Lt. General (Retd) Talat Masood, Director ORSAM Centre for Middle Eastern Studies (Ankra) Professor Dr. Ahmet Uysal, senior journalist from Washington Anwar Iqbal, senior media professional from London Reham Khan, Devcom-Pakistan Executive Director Munir Ahmed, senior visual artist and art entrepreneur Mahreen Elahi (Karachi), development expert Naseer Gillani, senior journalist from Landon Hamza Azhar Salam.

Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed it is yet another moment in the history when we all Muslim countries and friends of Turkey shall unite together against an engineered and politically motivated decision by the US president. A political commitment with a white Christian Armenian community in the selected districts of the United States is being honoured. While taking up this decision, the US president shall have kept in mind that the opposition to the Armenian stance is a much bigger population in the US. Turkey is also a very strong economic partner of the EU and the US besides being a significant member of NATO. The media across the globe shall be mobilized as a counter narrative building against this illegal decision showing the US double standards. Their eyes are closed on Myanmar, Kashmir, Rwanda, Nagorno Karabakh and many others.

Lt. General (Retd) Talat Masood the US decision against Turkey and many other such decisions show extreme prejudice against Muslims while Islamophobia is being hyppened through different deliberate attempts by the US and some of the Europeans countries. The EU has recently condemned Pakistan for its very rational statement on Islamophobia. To get respect and hounour, the Muslims countries need to understand the strength of unity to become a politically and economically strong bloc. A unanimous and firm stance in favour of Turkey and Islamophobia could lead to some rational behaviour towards the Muslim world. Turkey is standing up against the West and the US, we all shall come together to support it.

Professor Dr. Ahmed Usysal negated all the statistics quoted against Turkey for the recognition of a war killings as baseless and contrary to the historic facts. “We are not accepting any pressure from the West and the US for our internal and external policy, and we would not even if they impose any more such decisions on Turkey. We have defeated the US and its supporters even in the undemocratic events that have happened in Turkey. We stand united against every malicious campaign against Turkey, and ready to have a forum of likeminded experts, think tanks and media to combat the challenges confronting Turkey and all the Muslim world and the friends.

Devcom-Pakistan Director Munir Ahmed said Turkey is the rising Muslim leadership that is being consider a threat to the US and EU vested interest in the region and in the Muslim world. The country is also a strong voice against Islamophobia, so the non-Muslim powers have to plant strategies against Turkey. The joint forums shall kick off counter narrative campaigns in different countries supported by respective Turkish embassies. This is unfortunate the Turkish embassy in Islamabad was absent from the webinar despite several requests. This is really shocking that many leading think tanks in the region and EU and the US refused to participate. This shows the height of fear that the US and the EU has created on the US-Turkey standoff on the killings of the Armenian in World War-I in 1915.

PM REITERATES RESOLVE TO BRING ELECTORAL REFORMS; ASKS OPPOSITION TO COOPERATE

ISLAMABAD, MAY 1 (DNA) – Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday once again reiterated that the government was determined to introduce reforms in the electoral system with the use of latest technology to bring transparency and credibility.

In a series of connected tweets, the prime minister invited the opposition to sit with them and select from the available electronic voting machine (EVM) models to restore elections credibility.

He referred to recent NA: 249 election result disputed by different political parties, and said that use of technology would strengthen the democratic system in the country.

He also mentioned that for a year now, they had been asking the opposition parties to cooperate and help them reform the present electoral system.

“Unfortunately, no substantive reforms were put in place. Technology & use of Electronic Voting Machines are the only answer to reclaim credibility of elections. I invite the Opposition to sit with us & select from EVM models we have available to restore our elections credibility,” the prime minister posted.

“Our govt is determined & we will put in place reforms in our electoral system through the use of technology to bring transparency & credibility to our elections & strengthen our democracy,” he posted.

The prime minister further observed that apart from 1970 elections, doubts over the credibility of results had been raised in every election.

“In NA 249 bye election, despite a low turnout, all parties are crying foul & claiming rigging. Same happened in Daska recently & in Senate elections. In fact, apart from 1970 election, in every election claims of rigging have raised doubts over credibility of election results,” he said in a related tweet.

The prime minister further said that former United States president Trump’s team did everything to dispute the presidential election, but due to use of technology no irregularity was detected.

“Trump’s team did everything to dispute 2020 presidential election result; but bec (because) technology used in electoral process not one irregularity was found. For a year now we have been asking the Opposition to cooperate with us & help reform our present electoral system,” he posted in another tweet.

The prime minister recalled his party’s 126 days sit-in, demanding a probe into four constituencies.

“In 2013 there were 133 NA constituencies’ disputes before elec (election) tribunals. We asked for examination of just 4 constituencies’ votes & in all 4 rigging was established. But it took us a yr (year) & a 126-days dharna to get a Judicial Comm (commission) which found over 40 faults in conduct of elections,” he tweeted.=DNA

RUSSIA BARS EIGHT EU OFFICIALS IN RETALIATION FOR SANCTIONS

MOSCOW – Russia on Friday barred eight officials from European Union countries from entering the country in retaliation for sanctions imposed on Russian citizens by the EU.

Russia’s foreign ministry said those banned included Vera Jourova, vice president for values and transparency at the executive European Commission, David Sassoli, the president of the European parliament, and Jacques Maire, a member of the French delegation at the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly.

“The European Union continues to pursue its policy of illegitimate, unilateral restrictive measures against Russian citizens and organisations,” the ministry said in a statement.

It accused the EU of “openly and deliberately” undermining the independence of Russia’s domestic and foreign policy.

Russia banned three officials from the Baltic states: Ivars Abolins, chairman of Latvia’s National Electronic Media Council, Maris Baltins, director of the Latvian State Language Center, and Ilmar Tomusk, head of Estonia’s Language Inspectorate.

It also banned Jorg Raupach, Berlin’s public prosecutor, and Asa Scott of the Swedish Defence Research Agency.

Scott was among officials who said Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny had been poisoned in Russia with a Soviet-era nerve agent.

Navalny recovered from the poisoning in Germany and was detained upon his return to Russia in January, and sentenced in February to 2-1/2 years in prison for parole violations on an earlier embezzlement conviction that he says was politically motivated.

The EU imposed sanctions in March on two Russians accused of persecuting gay and lesbian people in the southern Russian region of Chechnya. The EU also imposed sanctions on four senior Russian officials close to President Vladimir Putin in March.

FORMAL START OF FINAL PHASE OF AFGHAN PULLOUT BY US, NATO

The final phase of ending America’s “forever war” in Afghanistan after 20 years formally began Saturday, with the withdrawal of the last U.S. and NATO troops by the end of summer.

President Joe Biden had set May 1 as the official start of the withdrawal of the remaining forces — about 2,500-3,500 U.S. troops and about 7,000 NATO soldiers.

Even before Saturday, the herculean task of packing up had begun.

The military has been taking inventory, deciding what is shipped back to the U.S., what is handed to the Afghan security forces and what is sold as junk in Afghanistan‘s markets. In recent weeks, the military has been flying out equipment on massive C-17 cargo planes.

The U.S. is estimated to have spent more than $2 trillion in Afghanistan in the past two decades, according to the Costs of War project at Brown University, which documents the hidden costs of the U.S. military engagement.

Defense department officials and diplomats told The Associated Press the withdrawal has involved closing smaller bases over the last year. They said that since Biden announced the end-of-summer withdrawal date in mid-April, only roughly 60 military personnel had left the country.

The U.S. and its NATO allies went into Afghanistan together on Oct. 7, 2001 to hunt the al-Qaida perpetrators of the 9/11 terrorist attacks who lived under the protection of the country’s Taliban rulers. Two months later, the Taliban had been defeated and al-Qaida fighters and their leader, Osama bin Laden, were on the run.

In his withdrawal announcement last month, Biden said the initial mission was accomplished a decade ago when U.S. Navy SEALS killed bin Laden in his hideout in neighboring Pakistan. Since then, al-Qaida has been degraded, while the terrorist threat has “metastasized” into a global phenomenon that is not contained by keeping thousands of troops in one country, he said.

Until now the U.S. and NATO have received no promises from the Taliban that they won’t attack troops during the pullout. In a response to AP questions, Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen said the Taliban leadership was still mulling over its strategy.

The insurgent group continues to accuse Washington of breaching the deal it signed with Biden’s predecessor more than a year ago. In that deal, the U.S. said it would have all troops out by May 1.

Violence has spiked in Afghanistan since the February 2020 deal was signed. Peace talks between the Taliban and Afghan government, which were part of the deal, quickly bogged down. On Friday, a truck bomb in eastern Logar province killed 21 people, many of them police and students.

Afghans have paid the highest price since 2001, with 47,245 civilians killed, according to the Costs of War project. Millions more have been displaced inside Afghanistan or have fled to Pakistan, Iran and Europe.

Afghanistan’s security forces are expected to come under increasing pressure from the Taliban after the withdrawal if no peace agreement is reached in the interim, according to Afghan watchers.

Since the start of the war they have taken heavy losses, with estimates ranging from 66,000 to 69,000 Afghan troops killed. The Afghan military has been battered by corruption. The U.S. and NATO pay $4 billion a year to sustain the force.

Some 300,000 Afghan troops are on the books, although the actual number is believed to be lower. Commanders have been found to inflate the numbers to collect paychecks of so-called “ghost soldiers,” according to the U.S. watchdog monitoring Washington’s spending in Afghanistan.

Last year was the only year U.S. and NATO troops did not suffer a loss. The Defense Department says 2,442 U.S. troops have been killed and 20,666 wounded since 2001. It is estimated that over 3,800 U.S. private security contractors have been killed. The Pentagon does not track their deaths.

The conflict also has killed 1,144 personnel from NATO countries.

The Taliban, meanwhile, are at their strongest since being ousted in 2001. While mapping their gains and territorial holds is difficult, they are believed to hold sway or outright control over nearly half of Afghanistan.

“We are telling the departing Americans … you fought a meaningless war and paid a cost for that and we also offered huge sacrifices for our liberation,” Shaheen told the AP on Friday.

Striking a more conciliatory tone, he added: “If you … open a new chapter of helping Afghans in reconstruction and rehabilitation of the country, the Afghans will appreciate that.”

In announcing the departure, Biden said waiting for ideal conditions to leave would consign America to an indefinite stay.

In the Afghan capital and throughout the country, there is a growing fear that chaos will follow the departure of the last foreign troops. After billions of dollars and decades of war, many Afghans wonder at whether it was worth it.

Speaking at the occasion, Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan said he was happy to note that most of the traders and customers were following SOPs and the overall situation was much improved in the city. He hoped that with such strict implementation of SOPs in markets, the cases of Covid-19 pandemic would come down in the coming days.

He said the purpose of this joint visit was to fully endorse and support the efforts of ICT Administration for compliance of SOPs in markets. He said that ICCI has set a good example of close cooperation with local administration to control the coronavirus and urged that trade bodies and business communities in other major cities should emulate them and cooperate with administrations to control the spread of this deadly virus.

He said it was a moral obligation of the trading community to make sure that people were wearing masks in markets in order to make the commercial centres and cities safe places from Covid-19. He said that such joint visits would also be made to other markets in the entire capital to make sure that SOPs were followed in markets.

Therefore, he urged that as the business community was extending full cooperation to the Administrations in enforcement of SOPs, the government should enhance the business hours, especially during the last week of Ramadan for Eid shopping as the businesses have already suffered great losses due to lockdowns and restrictions of timings and ample time for business activities would enable them to recover some losses.

Hamza Shafqaat, Deputy Commissioner Islamabad said that today a new precedent was set in the federal capital in cooperation with President ICCI for the enforcement of SOPs. He thanked Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan and the trading community for joining hands with the ICT Administration in efforts to control the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said that the ICT Administration was already overloaded with many responsibilities due to which spending more resources on the enforcement of coronavirus was difficult for it.

Therefore, the cooperation of ICCI and the trading community was very helpful in enforcement efforts. He said that during joint visits, more awareness about SOPs was created in the general public, warnings were issued, some shopkeepers were fined while few arrests were also made for violations.

He said that a new model was presented in the federal capital for the rest of the country that the business community and administration in every city should jointly work for enforcement of SOPs. He said that the purpose of such visits was to control the spread of virus and not to create any kind of harassment or close businesses.

He said that the ICT Administration in cooperation with ICCI and market associations would conduct such visits on a daily basis to minimize the Covid-19 cases in the federal capital and make it a safe city.=DNA

Romanian envoy thanks Pakistan

Pakistan allowed Romanian plane to overfly and reach India

ISLAMABAD: Ambassador of Romania to Pakistan Nicolae Goia has thanked the Pakistani authorities for allowing a Romanian plane permission to overfly to India. The plane carried relief goods for India.

The Ambassador told that a Romanian plane took off from Bucharest carrying humanitarian aid to India. It was remarkable how Pakistani authorities mobilized and gave the clearance for overflying Pakistan in just a few hours.

‘I express my gratitude for Pakistani prompt positive reaction to our Embassy and EU Delegation request for overflying approval. The plane was loaded with Romanian, European Union and other countries’ emergency supplies’, the ambassador added. It may also be mentioned here that the Ambassador of European Union Androulla Kaminara in her Tweet on Thursday had also thanked the Pakistani authorities.

Elections in Palestine postponed due to Israeli aggression

We have decided to postpone the parliamentary elections until we ensure the participation of the people of Jerusalem, says President Abbas

RAMALLAH: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has announced that the Palestinian elections have been postponed because Israel has a decision to prohibit the Palestinian citizens of occupied Jerusalem to participate.

President Abbas made the announcement after a meeting of leaders of Palestinian factions in Ramallah.

“We have decided to postpone the parliamentary elections until we ensure the participation of the people of Jerusalem,” President Abbas said in a statement. “The elections must be held in all the Palestinian territories, including Jerusalem.”

He said that he will work toward forming a Palestinian national unity government that would “abide by international resolutions and reinforce the PLO.”

Earlier in the night, President Abbas announced that Israel has informed the Palestinian Authority that it will not allow the Palestinians to hold elections in Jerusalem.

“There will be no elections without Jerusalem,” President Abbas said in opening remarks during a meeting of leaders of several Palestinian factions in Ramallah.

He said that the US, European Union and some Arab countries also informed the Palestinians of Israel’s refusal to allow the elections to take place in Jerusalem.

Today, we received a message from Israel, the US and some Arab countries about Israel’s opposition to holding the elections in Jerusalem,” he said. “The message we received said that Israel can’t make a decision because there is no government in Israel.”

Scoffing at the purported Israeli response, President Abbas said: “But there is a government in Israel that is making decisions to build thousands of settlements. Who issued the order to the [Israel] police to stand with the settlers in killing the people of Jerusalem? Where did these decisions came from? Africa? We won’t allow anyone to fool us. This is nonsense. Where is [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu? Netanyahu, may God prolong his life, is still the prime minister.”

President Abbas said that the Palestinians are ready to hold the elections once Israel agrees to allow the vote to take place in Jerusalem.

“We want the elections to take place in Jerusalem, and not in Abu Dis,” he said, referring to a West Bank village south of Jerusalem. “For us, the elections are not a tactic or a game.”

President Abbas said that the EU made a big effort to exert pressure on Israel to allow the elections to take place in Jerusalem, but to no avail.

“When we announced the elections, the Europeans told us that they support us and are ready to help us achieve our goal,” he noted. “I told the Europeans that that Israel will not agree to hold the elections in Jerusalem. They told me that they will talk to the Israelis about this. We also asked the Americans where are they, but we didn’t hear from them. We waited and didn’t receive a response. We also sent our foreign minister to Europe to tell them we are running out of time.”

President Abbas added, the heads of the EU told him that they were “frustrated” by Israel’s refusal to respond to the request to hold the elections in Jerusalem. President Abbas criticized Israel for “beating” Palestinian candidates in Jerusalem and preventing election gatherings.

Hungary to provide $84m credit line to Pakistan

PM Imran Khan for strong economic ties with Hungary

ISLAMABAD, APR 30 (DNA) – As Pakistan and Hungary Friday desired to develop economic partnership, the latter agreed to establish a credit line of $84 million for business-to-business cooperation and provide another $50 million for tied aid program.

“We have established a credit line at Hungarian EXIM bank to the extent of $84 million which is exclusively to serve the enhancement of business to business cooperation between Pakistani and Hungarian companies… We are ready to provide $50 million for a tied aid credit program to be launched in Pakistan in fields of agriculture, water, industry and food processing,” Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary Péter Szijjártó said in a joint press stakeout with Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi here.

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó arrived here on maiden official visit on the invitation of his Pakistani counterpart. Besides one-on-one meeting, both the foreign ministers also held delegation level talks in addition to attending a business conference to discuss ways of enhancing bilateral economic cooperation.

“This rolls the ball for economic partnership we want to build,” Foreign Minister Qureshi said apprising the media of the decisions reached between the two sides.

Qureshi said Péter Szijjártó was accompanied by representatives from 17 top Hungarian companies which interacted with Pakistani companies in a matchmaking B2B event held under the Economic Diplomacy Initiative.

Both the sides also signed a number of MoUs in fields of diary production, cyber security and others, Qureshi added. The foreign minister told media that Hungary had also expressed interest in starting direct flights between Pakistan to enhance people to people contact and promote business activity.

Foreign Minister Qureshi thanked for the Hungarian support to help Pakistan get GSP Plus status in European Union which doubled the Pakistan’s export to Europe. He said both the sides also exchanged views on FATF as how the forum was used and how ought to be used.

Both the sides agreed that the FATF should not be used as political tool rather only for checking money laundering and terror financing. The two countries agreed to hold their next round of political consultation in Budapest. Qureshi said it was after 15 years that Hungarian foreign minister was visiting Pakistan.

Péter Szijjártó told media that by visiting Pakistan after hiatus of 15 years, he had broken the unpleasant situation. He said the Hungarian government had understood the security and economic significance of the region.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Imran Khan has underlined the importance of developing a strong economic relationship commensurate with friendly bilateral ties and the potential of Pakistan and Hungary.

He was talking to Hungary’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Mr. Péter Szijjártó, who called on him in Islamabad on Friday.

The Prime Minister stressed the need for expanding beneficial cooperation in trade, energy, water resource management, food and agriculture, science and technology, and higher education.

Imran Khan also impressed upon the Hungarian business community to take advantage of the business friendly climate of Pakistan and bring further investment into the country.

Views were exchanged on the adverse economic impact of Covid-19 pandemic.

The Prime Minister appreciated Hungary’s efforts in vaccinating its population. He underlined that Pakistan’s efforts have been aimed at ensuring saving people from dying of the virus, and at the same time preventing them from dying of hunger, by stimulating the economy.

On Afghanistan, the Prime Minister reiterated his conviction that there is no military solution to the conflict and that a negotiated political settlement is the only way forward.  He underscored the importance of responsible withdrawal and steady progress by the Afghan parties towards a political solution. He said peace and stability in Afghanistan would yield other significant dividends including enhanced trade and regional connectivity.

Foreign Minister Szijjártó thanked the Prime Minister for receiving him and conveyed greetings from the Hungarian Prime Minister. Imran Khan renewed his invitation to Hungarian Prime Minister Mr. Viktor Orban to undertake a visit to Pakistan, while Foreign Minister Szijjártó extended an invitation to the Prime Minister to visit Hungary.
