NKOREA WARNS US OF ‘VERY GRAVE SITUATION’ OVER BIDEN SPEECH

North Korea on Sunday warned the United States will face “a very grave situation” because President Joe Biden “made a big blunder” in his recent speech by calling the North a security threat and revealing his intent to maintain a hostile policy against it.

Last week, Biden, in his first address to Congress, called North Korea and Iran’s nuclear programs “serious threats” to American and world security and said he’ll work with allies to address those problems through diplomacy and stern deterrence.

“His statement clearly reflects his intent to keep enforcing the hostile policy toward the DPRK as it had been done by the U.S. for over half a century,” Kwon Jong Gun, a senior North Korean Foreign Ministry official, said in a statement. DPRK stands for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the North’s official name.

“It is certain that the U.S. chief executive made a big blunder in the light of the present-day viewpoint,” Kwon said. “Now that the keynote of the U.S. new DPRK policy has become clear, we will be compelled to press for corresponding measures, and with time the U.S. will find itself in a very grave situation.”

Kwon still didn’t specify what steps North Korea would take, and his statement could be seen as an effort to apply pressure on the Biden administration as it’s shaping up its North Korea policy.

The White House said Friday administration officials had completed a review of U.S. policy toward North Korea, saying Biden plans to veer from the approaches of his two most recent predecessors as he tries to stop North Korea’s nuclear program. Press secretary Jen Psaki did not detail findings of the review, but suggested the administration would seek a middle ground between Donald Trump’s “grand bargain” and Barack Obama’s “strategic patience” approaches.

Kwon’s statement didn’t mention Psaki’s comments.

After a series of high-profile nuclear and missile tests in 2016-17, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un launched summit diplomacy with Trump on the future of his growing nuclear arsenal. But that diplomacy remains stalled for about two years over differences in how much sanctions relief North Korea could win in return for limited denuclearization steps.

In January, Kim threatened to enlarge his nuclear arsenal and build more high-tech weapons targeting the U.S. mainland, saying the fate of bilateral ties would depend on whether it abandons its hostile policy. In March, he conducted short-range ballistic missile tests for the first time in a year, though he still maintains a moratorium on bigger weapons launches.

“If Pyongyang agrees to working-level talks, the starting point of negotiations would be a freeze of North Korean testing and development of nuclear capabilities and delivery systems,” Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul, said. “If, on the other hand, Kim shuns diplomacy and opts for provocative tests, Washington will likely expand sanctions enforcement and military exercises with allies.”

Also Sunday, an unidentified North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman vowed a strong, separate response to a recent State Department statement that it would push to promote “accountability for the Kim regime” over its “egregious human rights situation.” He called the statement a preparation for “all-out showdown with us.”

Kim’s powerful sister, Kim Yo Jong, also slammed South Korea over anti-Pyongyang leaflets floated across the border by a group of North Korean defectors in the South. The group’s leader, Park Sang-hak, said Friday he sent 500,000 leaflets by balloon last week, in a defiance of a new, contentious South Korean law that criminalizes such action.

“We regard the maneuvers committed by the human waste in the South as a serious provocation against our state and will look into corresponding action,” Kim Yo Jong said in a statement.

She accused the South Korean government of “winking at” the leaflets. Seoul’s Unification Ministry responded later Sunday saying it opposes any act that creates tensions on the Korean Peninsula and it will strive to achieve better ties with North Korea.

Easley said the North Korean statements by Kwon and Kim Yo Jong show that “Pyongyang is trying to drive a wedge between South Korea and the United States” ahead of the May 21 summit between Biden and South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

Aguero puts Man City on brink of title

LONDON  , May 2  : Manchester City moved to the brink of a third Premier League title in four seasons as a piece of magic by Sergio Aguero set them on the way to a 2-0 victory at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola’s side were totally dominant but missing a cutting edge until Aguero’s stunning half-volley finish just before the hour mark broke Palace’s resolve at Selhurst Park.

A minute later Ferran Torres’s clinical low shot doubled City’s advantage and they could have racked up a bigger margin of victory as they turned on the style with Raheem Sterling denied by the woodwork and Joao Cancelo also going close.

With four games left City have 80 points, 13 ahead of Manchester United who host Liverpool on Sunday knowing that defeat would seal the title for their neighbours.

Should United draw on Sunday they could still mathematically catch City but their goal difference is far inferior. If United win, City can seal the title by beating Chelsea next weekend.

The wealth of options available to Guardiola was evident as he left the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden, Ruben Dias and Kyle Walker on the bench, with one eye on Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final against Paris St Germain.

Yet his starting line-up still oozed quality with an attacking quartet of Aguero, Sterling, Jesus and Torres.

Sterling, whose place in the starting line-up is no longer guaranteed, should have put City ahead after skipping into the box but he delayed his shot and his effort was blocked.

Jesus thought he had opened the scoring with a close-range volley but he had strayed offside and City, for all their possession, looked to be playing in third gear and failed to force a save from Vicente Guaita before the interval.

Palace’s only real chance fell for Christian Benteke but his close-range effort on the turn was saved by Ederson.

It was left to Aguero, veteran of four City title triumphs, to break the deadlock with a finish of stunning quality.

The 32-year-old Argentine, in the final weeks of his City career, was picked out by Benjamin Mendy’s pass. His first touch was superb and his second even better as he thrashed the ball past Guaita without breaking stride.

Torres threaded a shot past Guaita 83 seconds later and City looked as though they could run riot with Sterling thumping a shot against the post and whistling another effort just wide.

Cancelo also curled over the bar and Guaita denied Aguero a second goal late on.

Meanwhile, third-placed Leicester City suffered a frustrating Friday night on the south coast as they were held to a 1-1 draw by a Southampton side who played almost the entire match with 10 men.

In the end Leicester needed a 68th-minute Jonny Evans header to salvage a point after a gritty Southampton side had taken a surprise lead via a James Ward-Prowse penalty.

Southampton had begun the game in lively fashion but they suffered a blow after 10 minutes when Jannik Vestergaard was harshly shown a red card for a last-ditch tackle on Jamie Vardy.

The draw left Leicester with 63 points from 34 games, eight points above fifth-placed West Ham United who play on Monday.

Southampton moved up a place to 14th and with a 10-point gap between themselves and third-from-bottom Fulham they look to be safe from the prospect of relegation.

PML- N’s escape from talks on electoral reforms unfortunate: Fawad

ISLAMABAD , May 2 :   Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain has said that Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) escape from negotiations on electoral reforms in the country was very unfortunate.

The Information Minister took to the twitter and said that PML-N’s claim that the reform process has to be done by the Election Commission instead of the Parliament showed that they have no understanding of the system and no interest in reforms.

Why a party always coming to power through conspiracies would will go for electoral reforms, he remarked.

Earlier, PML-N president and opposition leader in National Assembly (NA) rejected the suggestion of using electronic voting machine.

In a statement, the PML-N leader said that the whole world has already turned down the application of electronic voting system. Such kind of important national decisions cannot be implemented on the orders or will of a specific person, he added.

Shehbaz Sharif further said that electoral reforms can only be finalized after mutual consultation.

The reaction came after Prime Minister Imran Khan had invited the opposition to sit with the government for consultation on holding transparent elections in order to strengthen the country’s democracy.

In a series of tweets, the PM said that despite a low turnout, all parties are crying foul and claiming rigging in the NA-249 by-election. The same happened in Daska as well as the recent Senate election. He added that in fact, apart from the 1970 election, claims of rigging in every election have raised doubts over the credibility of their results.

He said that in 2013, there were 133 NA constituencies’ disputes before the election tribunals. PTI asked for examination of just four constituencies’ votes and rigging was established in all four of them. However, it took PTI one year and a 126-day sit-in to get a Judicial Commission which found over 40 faults in the conduct of elections. Yet, no substantive reforms were put in place, he added.

The PM said that technology and use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) is the only answer to reclaiming the credibility of elections. He invited the opposition to sit with the government and select from the various EVM models available to restore election credibility.

He further said that former US President Donald Trump’s team did everything to dispute the result of 2020 presidential election; but not one irregularity was found due to the use of technology in the electoral process.

He said that his government was determined to bring about reforms in the electoral system through the use of technology in order to bring transparency and credibility to the elections and strengthen Pakistan’s democracy.

PML-N lost NA-249 by-election due to mismanagement, overconfidence: Saeed Ghani

KARACHI  ,  May 2  : The PPP has fired shots at the PML-N, after the latter accused the former of winning the NA-249 by-election through unfair means.

“The PML-N lost the NA-249 by-election owing to its own mismanagement and overconfidence,” said the minister, addressing a news conference.

The minister’s press conference came a few days after the NA-240 by-election was held in Karachi, where PPP’s Qadir Mandokhail emerged victorious, triggering allegations the party had resorted to unfair means from rival parties.

The PML-N had also lashed out at the PPP, accusing it of rigging the by-poll.

Ghani said there were videos doing the rounds on the internet in which a PPP polling agent can be seen being stopped by a Rangers official, who finds out the agent is carrying some money.

The minister said PML-N leaders were promoting the video and were claiming it was proof that the PPP had bought the NA-249 victory through its polling agents.

“Anyone who has ever contested an election knows that whenever a polling agent contests a vote, there is a fee for that [which must be paid],” he said. “I don’t know the amount of the fee, but it must be a few hundred rupees. That is what our polling agents had,” he said, rejecting claims the PPP’s polling agents had handed out bribes.

On allegations that he somehow got ahold of the election results before they came out, Ghani said he had tweeted the numbers that were available to him from the form 45 issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan.

He said the PML-N had no right to raise a hue and cry about the election results, adding that it was strange that no one bothered to raise their voices when the PPP candidate was trailing behind Miftah Ismail.

“This is very strange. Not a word of protest was said when the PML-N candidate was in the lead and when the voting process was underway,” he said. “It was after the election concluded and the results were announced that everyone started complaining.”

Ghani rejects allegations of PPP striking a ‘deal’

Ghani said the PPP also wanted answers as to why the PML-N had started celebrating a victory in NA-249, in advance of the announcement of the results.

The minister advised the PML-N against taunting the PPP of “making a deal” to win the polls, adding that it was the PML-N itself that had benefitted from such deals in the past.

He recounted how former prime ministers Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto had lost their lives in Pakistan and former president Asif Ali Zardari had been jailed for several years without ever being convicted.

The minister challenged the PML-N to “pull up a chart” and see which of the two parties, the PML-N and the PPP, had benefitted the most after the ’80s.

“If the elections can’t be won without striking a deal with the establishment, then the PML-N should tell us how it managed to win three elections?” he asked.

NA-249 by-poll: Election stolen from PML-N, alleges Maryam Nawaz

After the PPP candidate emerged victorious in the NA-249 by-poll, PML-N vice president Maryam Nawaz said the election had been “stolen” from the PML-N.

In a statement on Twitter, Maryam had said the election was stolen from PML-N by only a few hundred votes.

“ECP must withhold the results of one of the most disputed & controversial elections. Even if it doesn’t, this victory will be temporary and will Insha’Allah come back to PML-N soon.”

She added that the “vote is getting respect and will continue to receive it”.
