CPEC RENEWABLE ENERGY COOPERATION CITED AS A MODEL OF SINO-PAK PARTNERSHIP

BEIJING, Aug 3rd (DNA): CPEC renewable energy cooperation cited as a model of Sino-Pak cooperative partnership, according to a report published by Gwadar Pro.

“In 2020, the renewable energy projects under CPEC have not been slowed down by COVID-19 outbreak.

Each project group of China has worked closely with local employees to ensure the power supply of Pakistan. Pakistan has great potential in renewable energy, covering hydropower, wind energy and photovoltaic power.

China will continue to support Pakistan’s energiewende,” stated by 2020 International Cooperation Report on Renewable Energy of China, jointly published by China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute (CREEI) and International Energy Information Platform (IEIP) on 30th July.

538 people, including experts and scholars from the Chinese Society for Hydropower Engineering (CSHE), the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and the China Photovoltaic Industry Association (CPIA), attended the conference.

Zhou Shichun, spokesman of CREEI, said at the conference: “It has become the common consensus and concerted action of all countries to accelerate the global energiewende and promote green and low-carbon development. In 2020, COVID-19 pandemic has ravaged the world, causing the economy to fall into a deep recession globally.

However, in the past year, global renewable energy has been growing against the trend. Hence, accelerating development of renewable energy has become an important means for countries to respond to the COVID-19 crisis and achieve green recovery.”

Hydropower is still a major force in China-Pakistan renewable energy cooperation. CREEI is a key member of CPEC energy planning expert group and has carried out a joint study with The National Transmission and Distribution Corporation (NTDC).

According to the report, CREEI analyzed: “Pakistan is rich in hydropower resources and has about 40GW of exploitable technology.

Up to now, about 10GW of installed hydropower capacity in Pakistan has been developed and the utilization rate has reached 25%, so there is still a huge potential left.

With the deepening of energy cooperation under CPEC, the shortage of power supply in Pakistan has been alleviated year by year. With the continuous progress of energy transformation in Pakistan, hydropower, as the major force of renewable energy structure, China and Pakistan have broad space for cooperation in this field.”

In addition, Pakistan is also a key country for China’s international wind power cooperation. Liberty1&Liberty2 50MW Wind Power Project signed in 2020 and contracted by PowerChina, Gul Ahmed, Actll, Artictic wind power projects and ACT II project contracted by GoldWind group was cited as key case.

The report also mentions important activities and consensus between Pakistan and China in the renewable energy sector in 2020: On 25 March 2020, the CPEC Energy Cooperation Working Group held its eighth meeting via video and exchanged their views on related layout, situations and details of renewable energy cooperation under CPEC.

On 21 September 2020, the National Energy Administration of China and the Ministry of Energy of Pakistan signed the Agreement on the Adjustment of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Energy Project List (2020), in which the two sides reached consensus on adjustment principles and the list.

Zhou said at the conference: “Despite the severe test of the epidemic, the energy cooperation projects under CPEC have been still making steady progress, building a bridge for bilateral cooperation, and the cooperation in renewable energy has made remarkable achievements.

Regarding the deep friendship between Pakistan and China, China will firmly continue to support Pakistan’s energy transformation so as the iron-brothers can fulfil the sustainable development goal together.”

Pakistan termed a victim of proxy terrorism

ISLAMABAD: /DNA/ – “Pakistan is a victim of proxy terrorism, not extremist militancy,” said senior journalist and author Mr Imtiaz Gul. Therefore, he urged greater vigilance and surveillance of the border regions of Afghanistan with Pakistan, which had experienced their fair share of militant violence in the past. He was speaking at a webinar on the future of peace in Afghanistan organized by the Institute of Regional Studies (IRS) here on Tuesday.

Gul asserted that Pakistan had been playing a constructive role in bringing peace to Afghanistan through actions such as bringing the Taliban to the negotiating table, facilitating a breakthrough deal between the Taliban and the US for the withdrawal of Nato troops, and making all efforts to make the intra-Afghan dialogue a success.

Gul stressed that internal Afghan conflicts had the potential to impact the entire region. He was of the opinion that Afghan stakeholders could not defeat each other militarily in the short run and, thus, needed to sit across the table to sort out their differences. This, he argued, would save the people of Afghanistan from unnecessary bloodshed and misery. He further stated that the US military involvement in Afghanistan had come to an end and that there was no possibility of further military intervention by the US or NATO forces in the country.

Emphasizing the socio-political changes in Afghanistan, Gul pointed out that the Taliban had claimed that they would safeguard human rights, including women rights and would avoid upsetting their regional supporters. He cautioned, however, that the Taliban were a conservative tribal force and expecting a sudden change in their behaviour and world view wouldn’t be correct. He was of the view that the international community could also play its role in making sure that the Taliban came with a reformed governance approach.

Furthermore, he highlighted that Pakistan needed to go on an information offensive to offset the Afghan narrative regarding the Durand Line. He was of the opinion that the existing Afghan refugees in Pakistan were no longer an economic burden because they had integrated into the economy.  However, he expressed his concern that further influx could be damaging to Pakistan’s economy. “The need of the hour is smart diplomacy, vision, and farsightedness,” he said.

Dr Naheed Goraya, Associate Professor at Centre for South Asian Studies (CSAS), underlined that peace could only be achieved through understanding and not war. She added that any forced settlement could lead to a protracted situation of conflict in Afghanistan. She also mentioned that Afghan society had changed in the past two decades since the Taliban held sway, which could affect the outcome of the peace talks as well as the future of Afghanistan. Further elaborating, Goraya said that attainment of peace would be a long process and would require political will of all stakeholders. “Pakistan can help as a facilitator but cannot impose anything on the Afghans,” she said.

Goraya also stressed on the importance of reconciliation along with the peace process and withdrawal of troops as vital elements for peace. “The next 5-10 years would be very difficult for Afghanistan, even with an optimistic outlook,” she said. She also mentioned the importance of neighbours of Afghanistan refraining from engaging in proxy wars. She further underscored the important role that Pakistan needed to play in being a partner in socio-economic development of Afghanistan.

President IRS, Ambassador Nadeem Riyaz, stated that the situation in Afghanistan impacted the entire region, especially Pakistan The Ambassador further stated that even though it was a complicated situation which one found hard to predict, Afghans needed to be in the driving seat in determining their own future. He added that political stability Afghanistan and the region would lead to economic prosperity, which was imperative for the future of South Asia.

PROCEDURES TO FOLLOW DURING THE PANDEMIC

By Muhammad Omar Iftikhar

It seems the pandemic is here to stay. One after the other a new wave and variant of the virus are reported to be affecting the population. During such times of distress, the best strategy is to keep ourselves safe and protected. We must, under all circumstances, follow standard operating procedures and social distancing measures. Masks must be worn at all times whenever we are outside and sanitizers must be used after every half an hour or forty-five minutes. We must avoid touching others and must use our stationery, items, etc. We should not eat outside or order food. Reliance must be to cook food at home. Those going to the office must take food from home as well. Parents must monitor their children and keep them safe and indoors as much as possible. When going out in public we must avoid touching anything. The recent variant, Delta, and the newest one, Epsilon, have been termed as more lethal than the previous variants. We must take care of our diet and consume fruits, vegetables, soups, and juices to keep ourselves healthy.  Our immunity increases by taking proper food, drinking water, sleeping for eight hours, avoiding junk food and cold drinks, and having a positive outlook.  The government has ordered us to pursue SOPs for our safety. Moreover, getting vaccinated must be a top priority for all. There have been cases reported where elders (over 70 years) did not opt to be vaccinated thinking they are safe at home but they contract the virus and end up facing health issues that prove to be lethal. It must be our responsibility to keep ourselves safe and to protect others too. We should be aware that this virus has affected us collectively. We need to fight against it at a collective level. Following SOPs and all measures must be our priority.

CRYPTOCURRENCY – DIGITAL CURRENCY OF 21ST CENTURY

By Huma Arshad

cryptocurrency is a virtual or digital currency in the form of coins or tokens. Cryptocurrency is comprised of two words –‘crypto’ means data encryption and ‘currency’ means a medium of exchange. This digital form of currency is a medium of exchange used in the digital world, uses encryption that ensures the security of transactions. Cryptocurrency’s transactions are different than the traditional banking system. In traditional banking, money is regulated by regulatory agencies like state banks and other banks owned by the government. While in the case of cryptocurrencies, no state can control them.

Cryptocurrency is on the brink to launch a revolution, one that could reinvent traditional financial and social structure while bringing the world’s billions of unbanked individuals into a new global economy.       ( The age of cryptocurrency;2015 by Paul Vigna and Michael,  )

Use of blockchain technology in crypto transactions

Cryptocurrency works by using blockchain technology. Due to using blockchain technology, the transaction data is on all computers not only on a single server but on all computers connected to one network. Blockchain technology is a decentralized technology that spreads across different computers and that manages and records transactions. Through blockchain technology whenever a new transaction appears, it is replicated on all computers, which ensures that it can not be changed without the approval of all network partakers. Blockchain technology is widely used in keeping records and is prominently used in research, education, management, and medicines. There is a false misconception that blockchain is not open to the general public. The truth is many companies create their private blockchain to be used among their employees, while the majority of the blockchain behind famous cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin is approachable and accessible by the public.

Different types of cryptocurrencies

The encrypted coins and tokens come under cryptocurrency. Nowadays there are different cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin but those have very little value and very little potential in the market. The most popular in the list are Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Cardano, Stellar, USD Coin, Chainlink, Uniswap, Polkadot, Bitcoin Cash, etc. If we talk about Binance we came to know that it is a cryptocurrency exchange that gives a medium or platform for the trading purpose of different cryptocurrencies.

Among all of the Bitcoin is the most valued one. It was created to be used as a digital payment method. Successful currencies have six attributes including scarcity, divisibility, utility, transportability, durability, and counterfeit ability. When it comes to Bitcoin, it holds all these characteristics. After Bitcoin, the most famous is Ethereum, which is the cryptocurrency of the Ethereum network, which is an open-source blockchain on which developers can build dapps ( Dapps are a growing movement of applications that use Ethereum to disrupt business models or invent new models.)

Benefits of cryptocurrency

“Bitcoin is exciting me because it shows how cheap transaction can be.”- Bill Gates. Dealing in cryptocurrency is one to one affair based on peer to peer networking structure which does not require a middle man. This leads to less confusion over who should pay what to whom, and greater accountability, in that both the parties know each other directly. One of the main advantages of cryptocurrency is, this type of transaction guards the privacy of your financial history and safe you from the identity theft that is greater in the conventional system where your details can be revealed at any point in the transaction chain.

We all know that in traditional banking system transaction fee takes a chuck of our assets. In crypto transactions, you do not have to face any problem like that. There may be some external fee involved if you engage the services of third-party management services to maintain your cryptocurrency wallet. Unlike a normal wallet, crypto wallets technically do not store your cryptocurrency. Your holding is live on the blockchain but you can access it by using the private key. This private key proves your ownership of your digital money and allows you to make your transactions.

Although still not recognized as legal tender by different governments, cryptocurrencies due to their digital and virtual nature are not subject to the exchange rates, interest rates, transaction charges, or other embargoes imposed by any specific country. So it is an easier medium of international trade from one country to another country. We should not forget that still there are millions of people who have no access or limited access to payment systems like banks. Cryptocurrency is here to facilitate maximum people by spreading digital commerce in the world so that people with only their mobile phones in their hands can do the payment as it is a fact that more people have access to mobile phones than banks.

Beware of Crypto risks

The risks involved in dealing with cryptocurrency are diverse but limited to those only who participate in this business. Like any new step you take in life, there is always a risk involved. Cryptocurrency also has its pros and cons. So, like any other business before dealing in crypto either investing in it or simply holding it, you must gauge and understand the risk. The major risk involved in cryptocurrency is its volatility, instability, or unpredictability. For example, in 2017, the price of Bitcoin skyrocketed above 1,000% and then came crashing down. Afterward, the cryptocurrency hype has calm down, the price fluctuation has become more predictable. The risks in crypto dealing can be categorized into four major areas: technical risk to the one who is participating, the economic risk to the person who is involved in the transaction, systematic risks to the cryptocurrency ecosystem, and societal risks of acceptance and societal trend. For example, many financial experts are worried that Bitcoin is a bubble that could pop. If the high-value cryptocurrencies did crash, it would have devastating and long-term effects on all other cryptocurrencies which are of low value. Regulatory intervention is another obstacle as some governments have embraced digital currencies, while others are still rigid and have pushed regulations. Apart from all these risk factors in the end we have to remember this quote by  Marko Halilovic,” Take the risk or lose the chance “

UK court orders NAB to pay around £920,000 to Broadsheet

Master Davison, who granted the Interim Order to Broadsheet’s lawyers, ordered that these funds are to be paid to NAB’s lawyers Allen & Overy’s account by August 10 and then released to the Broadsheet’s account by August 13

DNA

LONDON: The London High Court has ordered the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to pay three separate amounts to the Broadsheet LLC by 13 August or else the United National Bank’s London branch will be forced to make payments to the Broadsheet LLC.

After hearing an application brought by the Broadsheet LLC against the Government of Pakistan/NAB, Master Davison issued an order asking the NAB to pay three amounts of £892,521.50 ($1.222,037.90), £110, and additional costs of £26,296.80 to the Broadsheet LLC.

Master Davison, who granted the Interim Order to Broadsheet’s lawyers, ordered that these funds are to be paid to NAB’s lawyers Allen & Overy’s account by August 10 and then released to the Broadsheet’s account by August 13. Davison said in his order that if either of these payments is not made within the prescribed period (i.e. August 13) the Interim Order will become final and United National Bank will then be compelled to transfer the secured sum to Broadsheet’s lawyers by August 17.

The Broadsheet’s lawyers had approached the court seeking £33,646.84 in interest but the court didn’t grant this sum to the Broadsheet. The court, however, awarded additional costs of £26,296.80 inclusive of Value Added Tax (VAT) to the Broadsheet.

During the hearing, NAB’s lawyers attempted to argue that the application had been brought prematurely but the Master dismissed that argument and was critical of both the NAB and its lawyers’ failure to properly engage with the proceedings.

The Broadsheet and the NAB went back to the London High Court after failing to agree on the issue of costs and interests related to the payment of the remaining US$ 1,222,037.90 (£892,521.50), the interest of £33,646.84, and costs of £35,000. The Broadsheet controversy raged for several months after Pakistan lost the case and then several scandalous stories involving Kaveh Moussavi, Germany based Anjum Dar, Shahzad Akbar, The Daily Mail reporter David Rose, Dr Pucks and Zafar Ali QC made rounds.

Kaveh Moussavi had alleged that Anjum Dar wanted a cut if he could get the payment made from Pakistan. Evidence showed that Anjum Dar held two meetings with Kaveh Moussavi in Germany and UK and sought commission on the promise that he will use his contacts in the PML government to get the monies of Broadsheet cleared.

Two Georgian judo athletes ejected from Olympics after going on Tokyo sightseeing trip

TOKYO — An unauthorized sightseeing trip has cost two Georgian judo athletes their credentials, according to a Kyodo News report.

Tokyo 2020 spokesman Masa Takaya had announced at the daily briefing Saturday that a resident of the Olympic Village had been stripped of their credential for violating COVID-19 protocols by going sightseeing. He would not provide more details, including whether it was an athlete, what country he or she was from or when the incident occurred.

He also refused to say whether the “accreditation deprivation,” which occurred Friday, was temporary or permanent.

Tokyo 2020 CEO Toshiro Muto will have more information at Sunday’s daily briefing, Takaya said.

“All I can say is (the person) left the Olympic Village for sightseeing and accreditation was deprived. I can’t give you any more than that,” he said.

But Kyodo, citing a spokesperson for the Georgian Olympic committee, reported Saturday night that it was two judo athletes, and that they had been ejected from the Games. Kyodo did not provide any further details, and the Georgian Olympic committee did not immediately return an email from USA TODAY Sports.

Earlier, Takaya would only say that if someone’s credential is revoked “they are not allowed to access Tokyo 2020 venues.”

Judo’s last event, the mixed team, was Saturday, and Georgia did not qualify. Georgia had nine judo athletes in Tokyo, seven of them men. Four won medals, including Lasha Bekauri’s gold in the 90 kg category.

Everyone – athletes, coaches, media members, volunteers – at the Tokyo Olympics must follow a series of strict protocols to keep the Games from becoming a COVID-19 super-spreader event. That includes not venturing outside of Tokyo 2020 venues or using public transportation for the first 14 days they’re in the country.

This is the first breach of the whereabouts protocol since the Olympics began. A Ugandan weightlifter went missing from a training camp July 16, a week before the Opening Ceremony, but was found five days later.

“Leaving the Village for the purpose of sightseeing, that is something not to be tolerated,” Masa said. “Therefore, we went through the appropriate process for deprivation.”

Ghani blames ‘abrupt’ US exit for instability

In response, the Taliban group released a statement to the media, calling Ghani’s statements “nonsense” and saying “his time is over”

Foreign Desk

KABUL: Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani has blamed the country’s deteriorating security on the United States deciding “abruptly” to withdraw its troops.

Presenting his security plan before Parliament on Monday, Ghani said the situation in the war-torn nation will be “under control within six months”, adding that the US has pledged its full support. “The reason for our current situation is that the decision was taken abruptly,” he told Parliament, adding he had warned Washington the withdrawal would have “consequences”.

The president added that “protection of the people” is a duty he will maintin.

After his address, both houses of parliament released a joint statement, expressing their full support for Ghani’s security plan.

In their statement, the legislators declared their “firm” support to human and women’s rights and freedom of speech and said they stand with the Afghan National Army, “who sacrifice their lives for the nation”.

In response, the Taliban group released a statement to the media, calling Ghani’s statements “nonsense” and saying “his time is over”. “He was trying to control his own bad [mental] state and mistakes,” said the statement. “The nation has decided to prosecute the national traitors and bring them to justice. Declarations of war, making accusations and providing false information cannot prolong Ghani’s life,” it said.

“His time is over, God willing.”For months, the Taliban’s rapid territorial gains during the final stages of the US military withdrawal have largely been in sparsely populated rural areas. But in recent weeks, it has brought increasing pressure on provincial capitals and seized key border crossings. The capture of any major urban centre would take their current offensive to another level and fuel concerns that the army is incapable of resisting the Taliban’s advances.

The government has repeatedly dismissed the group’s steady gains over the summer as lacking strategic value but has largely failed to reverse their momentum on the battlefield. The Taliban has seized Afghan cities in the past but has managed to retain them only briefly.

Zero tolerance for corrupt practices

Imran Khan says that government is fully committed to encourage and facilitate different sectors of economy

Shujaat Hamza

ISLAMABAD: Expressing resolve to take Pakistan to its real destination, Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan said that the current government wanted to change corrupt system in Pakistan.

Addressing a ceremony in Islamabad, Imran Khan said that government was fully committed to encourage and facilitate different sectors of economy for the purpose of wealth creation to permanently overcome the financial challenges.

The prime minister said that government was vigorously implementing its plans to promote construction industry and incentivized the export sector because when economy moved on, the revenues were generated leading to jobs creation and revenue generation.

Sharing his vision for Naya Pakistan, the prime minister said their first priority was to pull the people from poverty as 25 per cent of the total population of the country was living under the poverty line whereas another chunk of 25 per cent was living on the margins of this line.

PM Khan regretted that there was a time when the Asian tigers looked towards Pakistan in terms of progress and development as it was considered ‘as model for development’. “A country like Malaysia followed the model of Pakistan. But then the country went hurtling down from the path of unprecedented development,” he said.

Underling the need to become self reliant, the premier noted that Pakistan was blessed with huge potential and its various entities performed outstandingly in the past. He also said when a system became corrupt, it ultimately putrefy the society. “It is called a system of corruption,” he observed. The prime minister said those countries had become bankrupt where ruling and elite classes reveled in corruption without having rule of law.  “In those societies a small fragment of society became richer, pushing the poor segments into further poverty,” he said.
