This brought a new impetus to the developing countries in the South to increase the depth and breadth of their cooperation to address common socio economic and development challenges, such as Global health, climate change, food security, good governance etc.

Over the past three decades, the importance of South-South and triangular cooperation has been particularly highlighted by the Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS). As stated in the Foundation document establishing the Commission in 1994, its basic purpose is to “provide leadership and support for major South-South and North-South cooperative schemes in education, training and research” to its member states.Utilizing South-South cooperation as mechanism to improve member countries’ capacities to better deal with the global challenges and to join the knowledge and resources in the South in a more collective and effective manner, COMSATS encourages the Governments, development agencies, research institutions, private sector, and civil society in developing countries to collaborate, combine their efforts and expertise and to form necessary partnerships to promote science-based solutions for common development.

Within these few years, ANSO has made important strides in facilitating collaborative priority-setting for innovation and research cooperation in cross-cutting fields, policy and strategic advice, capacity building and development, and conducting solution-oriented projects among several countries.

COMSATS membership to ANSO enabled COMSATS Member States and Centres of Excellence to participate in ANSO’s activities including fellowship and scholarships; prize and awards; training program; collaborative research; and professional associations. COMSATS and ANSO endorsed South-South cooperation as a more relevant and responsive strategy for the implementation of its Programme of Action and are actively pursuing close cooperation in S&T  to help member countries achieve their development goals. COMSATS-ANSO cooperation involved institutional support, scientific training, joint research programmes, and technology transfer, to equip the South with stronger and effective mechanisms for South-South cooperation. COMSATS and ANSO jointly supporting the building of research capacity in developing countries in the South through PhD-level training and short courses on research training organized by ANSO in China.

Firdous confident for Hafeez Sheikh’s win in Senate polls

ISLAMABAD, Mar 3  : Special Assistant to Punjab Chief Minister on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan Wednesday said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s candidate Hafeez Sheikh, who has the support of majority lawmakers, seemed set to win the Senate polls.

Talking to a private news channel, she claimed that the ruling party would emerge as the largest party in the upper house of the Parliament after the Senate election.

She said that a senator that was elected through money would never serve the people, rather, he would “suck the nation’s blood”.

She also lashed out at the opposition for opposing open ballot in the Senate elections due to fear of defeat.

She said corrupt Pakistan Democratic Movement alliance would face defeat in Senate polls, adding that the transparency in elections would strengthen the democracy.

She said that instead of supporting the government’s move for electoral reforms, the opposition was creating hurdles for an open ballot in the Senate elections.

Firdous said that the government in the leadership of Imran Khan was striving to bring genuine representatives of the people into the parliament, adding that this was not possible without abrogating the role of money in the sale and purchase of votes.

Replying to a question, she said PTI was united and working as a family to defend the country from looters and corrupt politicians.

She said resistance to the open balloting had exposed the dual standards of the opposition parties.

PM’s struggle for transparency in elections to bury politics of corruption: Murad Saeed

ISLAMABAD, Mar 03  : Federal Minister for Communications and Postal Services Murad Saeed on Wednesday said that Prime Minister Imran Khan had made historic struggle for transparency in elections which will bury the politics of corruption and dishonesty.

In a reaction to PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s statement, he said there were many reasons for a “Parchi chairman” to feel shame, but it was not possible for shameless people.

He said an attempts to become a democrat by sitting on the legacy of corruption, fraud, dishonesty and looting has failed miserably.

“Protection of corruption was the talent of Yousuf Raza Gilani that is why he was nominated for the Senate,” he added.

He said that Gilani was rewarded for saving Asif Zardari’s corruption and preventing the recovery of the nation’s looted wealth.

He said that instead of the constitution and the court, Gilani preferred the protection of Zardari and his loot and plunder.

“Yousuf Raza Gilani also stole the necklace of the Turkish president’s wife given to the flood victims”, he said.

He said that Gilani’s son was caught doing what is his ancestral profession, adding that Gilani’s children have also been involved in big scandals.

Microsoft sets stage for mixed-reality future

San Francisco, March 3  : Microsoft on Tuesday set the stage for a future in which long-distance coworkers can collaborate as though in the same room, using augmented reality glasses and cloud computing power.

The US technology colossus launched Microsoft Mesh platform at its annual Ignite developers conference, which was a streamed event this year due to the pandemic.

“One of the easiest ways to think about it is Microsoft Mesh connects the physical and digital worlds, allowing us to transcend the traditional boundaries of space and time,” co-creator Simon Skaria said in a video presentation.

Microsoft technical fellow Alex Kipman, whose team created HoloLens augmented reality eyewear that has caught on with businesses, appeared as a hologram to unveil Mesh on a virtual stage.

Mesh is powered by Azure cloud computing systems that combine data center processing power with artificial intelligence.

Holohedrons headgear with a $3,500 price tag is used to overlay digital imagery on real world settings, but the Mesh platform has the potential to be synced to virtual reality gear such as Facebook-owned Oculus as well as smartphones, according to Kipman.

Apple, Google, and Facebook are among the tech titans investing in mixed reality.

Mesh is designed to let people collaborate and share holographic experiences in real time no matter how far apart them may be, presentations showed.

“You can actually feel like you’re in the same place with someone sharing content or you can teleport from different mixed reality devices and be present with people even when you’re not physically together,” Kipman said.

People will initially be able to appear in Mesh experiences as avatars, but in the future will be able to project lifelike holograms of themselves, according to Microsoft.

The pandemic caused a dramatic shift to working and learning remotely, with reliance on cloud computing instead of offices or classrooms expected to remain part of people’s lives.

The Redmond, Washington-based company expects outside developers and partners to build applications on Mesh, and is working to integrate it in products such as Teams virtual collaboration service.

Niantic chief John Hanke took part in the Ignite presentation with a concept version of its popular Pokémon Go mobile game running on HoloLens.

“This notion of bringing my virtual friends along with me as I go out and walk and explore the world — I just love that concept and I’m really interested to see what we can do with that,” Hanke said.

Warner admits rushing back from injury to face India was a mistake

Wed, Mar 3, 2021,  Warner suffered a groin injury in the ODI series against India and has been struggling since.Warner suffered a groin injury in the ODI series against India and has been struggling since.

David Warner has admitted that he should not have rushed himself back from injury to play in the Border-Gavaskar Test series against India, conceding that he took the call to help his teammates out in a tough series. The dynamic opener suffered a tear in his groin while diving to field a ball in an ODI against India, an injury that ruled him out of the T20I series as well the first two Tests that were split.

He returned to action in the New Year but scores of 5, 13, 1 and 48 in the four-Test innings meant his return didn’t have the intented impact on his side, who went on to concede the series on a dramatic final day in Brisbane. The speedy return didn’t help with his recuperation either with only a cancelled tour of South Africa giving him the time off before this week’s return to domestic cricket.

“It put me back a little bit,” Warner said on the eve of New South Wales’ Marsh Cup clash against South Australia. “Looking back in hindsight, I probably wouldn’t have done that. I made the call to play those Test matches, felt like I needed to be out there and help the guys.

“If I’m thinking about myself and the injury, I probably would have said no but I did what I felt was best for the team and me being out there opening the batting was I felt the best thing for the team. I’ve had this time to heal and obviously with South Africa being called off, it gave me a bit more time to get that strength work done,” he added.

After his domestic cricket commitments, the 34-year-old Warner will next be in action with Sunrisers Hyderabad at IPL 2021 followed by a stint at The Hundred in July. His next Test assignment might well be in the second half of the year unless England beat India in the fourth Test at Ahmedabad to help Australia progress to the World Test Championship final. There is another ICC trophy to fight for later in the year at the T20 World Cup although Warner has set his sights until the 2023 50-over World Cup.

“I’m not thinking about the end date at all, for me it’s about the 2023 World Cup,” he said. “We’ve got a good foundation with the white-ball team, we’ve got a good opportunity to play that and win in India. The core of the team with the age group it will probably be the last for a few of us. Then obviously it’s a given that you have to call it time unless you are going to play to 41 – it’s time for the new guys to come through.

“From a Test cricket point of view, I’d love to play as long as I can. We’ve got a lot of cricket coming up in that context after this year so for me it’s about staying fit and healthy and trying to manage my family time with cricket.”
