China to share its rich experience with Pakistan producing organic food

BEIJING, March 11 : China is prepared to share its rich experience with Pakistan and other countries for producing organic  Food, Gwadar Pro reported on Thursday.

In Pakistan, organic farming is still in its infancy stage with a very limited number of established organic farms.

Statistics show that organic land only accounts for 0.2% of the total. Meanwhile, as a the second largest producer of organic products in Asia, China may offer some lessons to learn in this regard.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the general demand for nutritious products and healthy food including organic foods has increased significantly worldwide, presenting enormous opportunities for farmers and companies to tap into.

Ningxia Qinlaoren Agricultural Development Co., Ltd. is a Chinese wolfberry producer based in the northwestern province Ningxia.

According to the report, Chinese wolfberry is a kind of fruit and a major tonic herb with high nutritional and medical values, and it is also a key brand product in the region.

In the demonstration planting base for professional cultivation of green organic wolfberry, quality is strictly controlled from seedling to plant growth. Farm manure is used instead of fertilizer.

For pest control, physical methods are adopted instead of chemical ones. The company’s products have been widely applied in healthcare and food businesses.

The organic babies’ snack brand GOOD GOUT China follows the same philosophy throughout its production cycle.

“In our range of products for babies, for example, some fruit puree or yogurt, instead of adding preservatives, honey will be used as a raw material to give it the sweet taste. Raw materials with high fiber and protein will be used, and anthocyanins will be added to prevent oxidation”, said Offline Sales Manager Chen Qianying.

Amid the ubiquitous challenges posed by the pandemic, organic food sector in Pakistan is presented with rare opportunities. Data show that 70% of consumers choose to increase spending on nutrition products after the pandemic, and nearly 90% of consumers’ expenditure on nutrition products has increased by 10% – 20% compared with that in the past.

“Pakistan also has natural endowments and resources, so it is very compatible with the development of health industry”, said Sun Jiangwei, Executive General Manager of BioGrowing (Shanghai), a company dedicated to probiotic businesses with products exported to 53 countries including Pakistan.

Since 2013, the healthcare products of his company have entered Pakistani market. In addition, Healthcare products from Pakistan made their appearance at the China International Import Expo (CIIE) 2020.

“Pakistani enterprises can participate in more exhibitions to have more information exchange. “I believe healthcare products will have great market potential along the Belt and Road in the future”, he added.

Organic products are often regarded as a high-end nitch market. In Pakistan, only few are organic farmers. The main reason lies in their premium price driven up by small, scattered production, which is a major factor constraining the popularity of organic food products.

But Dr. Farooq Khan believes that “if we do it on modern basis, as done by China and other countries, we will get better yield from organic farming, in turn, benefiting our economy. So in my opinion, such training should be promoted.”

In particular, if small-scale farmers are equipped with sufficient expertise, the potential of the small plots of land will be further unleashed, overcoming the bottleneck of conventional dispersed farming and packing.

With the initiative of agricultural cooperation including the recently established China-Pakistan Agricultural and Industrial Cooperation Information Platform, Pak-China cooperation in agriculture is yet to make a big headway.

For more organic products to be recognized and welcomed in domestic, regional and international market, a home-grown certification organization that meets international standards should also be put in place to assess and label these natural products.

According to experts, it will not only augment producers’ credibility and consumers’ confidence, but also hold the entire community accountable for environmental implication and food security.

When BioGrowing (Shanghai) entered the Pakistani market in 2013, the development of e-commerce platforms has been a tremendous boon. In Pakistan, a growing number of sellers are turning to online stores for direct marketing.

The ongoing digital transformation accelerated by the pandemic will provide more solutions to organic practices and businesses, benefiting the entire agriculture sector.

Facebook halts project for undersea data cable to Hong Kong

Picture taken on May 12, 2012 in Paris shows an illustration made with figurines set up in front of Facebook's homepage. Facebook, already assured of becoming one of the most valuable US firms when it goes public later this month, now must convince investors in the next two weeks that it is worth all the hype. San Francisco, March 11 : Facebook has decided to halt its efforts to build a trans-Pacific undersea cable that would have connected California and Hong Kong, due to tensions between the United States and China.

“Due to ongoing concerns from the US government about direct communication links between the United States and Hong Kong, we have decided to withdraw our FCC application,” a Facebook spokesperson told on Wednesday, referring to the Federal Communications Commission.

“We look forward to working with all the parties to reconfigure the system to meet the concerns of the US government,” the spokesperson added.

The social networking giant and several telecom companies filed their first construction permit in 2018, to connect two sites in California to Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The project was supposed to facilitate communications through fiber optics capable of carrying large volumes of data with very low waiting times.

In June, the US Department of Justice recommended that a trans-Pacific undersea cable proposed by Google and Facebook bypass Hong Kong. The cable, named the Pacific Light Cable Network, was originally intended to link the United States, Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Philippines.

The Hong Kong landing station “would expose US communications traffic to collection” by Beijing, the department said.

The FCC gave Google permission in April 2020 to operate the link between North America and Taiwan.

Generation threatened as pandemic sets back childhood development: UNICEF

New York, March 11  : Closed schools, surging poverty, forced marriages and depression, after a year of the pandemic, indicators measuring child and adolescent development have all regressed, a setback that heralds lasting stigma for an entire generation, UNICEF warned Thursday.

“The number of children who are hungry, isolated, abused, anxious, living in poverty and forced into marriage has increased,” Henrietta Fore, executive director of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, said in a statement released exactly one year since the World Health Organization classified Covid-19 as a pandemic.

“Their access to education, socialization and essential services including health, nutrition and protection has decreased. The signs that children will bear the scars of the pandemic for years to come are unmistakable,” Fore said in the statement.

Faced with such “devastating” effects, Fore urged for children to be placed “at the heart of recovery efforts,” particularly by “prioritizing schools in reopening plans.”

UNICEF cited a series of worrying figures in support of Fore’s words.

While the pandemic has taken a heavy toll on the elderly, children and adolescents under 20 make up 13 percent of the 71 million coronavirus cases reported in the 107 countries that provided age-specific data.

In developing countries, projections show a 15 percent increase in child poverty.

Six to seven million more children could suffer from malnourishment in 2020, an increase of 14 percent that could translate to more than 10,000 additional deaths per month, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

For 168 million students around the world, schools have been closed for nearly a year. A third of those students do not have access to online education.

As a result of the shuttered schools and worsening economic situation, the pandemic could also lead to the marriage of 10 million children by 2030, adding to the 100 million girls already considered at risk of marriage by then.

At least one in seven children or adolescents has spent the majority of the past year under lockdown orders, increasing anxiety, depression and isolation.

The coronavirus has also led to the suspension of vaccination campaigns against other diseases — starting with measles — in 26 countries, increasing threats to the health of non-immunized people.

Hope century leads Windies to victory as Gunathilaka out obstructing field

Antigua and Barbuda: Shai Hope marked his return to West Indies duty with an assured hundred in guiding his team to a comfortable eight-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the first One-Day International of a three-match series at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Wednesday.

On a day when Sri Lankan opening batsman Danushka Gunathilaka became just the eighth player in more than 50 years of ODI cricket to be dismissed obstructing the field, Hope returned to his best form with an innings of 110.

It was his tenth century in this format of the game, to ensure that the tourists’ total of 232 all out was overhauled comfortably.

Dropped from the West Indies team following a wretched tour of England last July, Hope’s only real discomfort across 133 deliveries in which he stroked 12 fours and one six was the pace of Dushmantha Chameera, who struck the elegant batsman on the helmet when 20 runs short of three figures.

“I just had patience and trusted my ability,” said Hope after receiving the Man of the Match award.
“I made sure I negated the threat they threw at us. (Wanindu) Hasaranga was the main threat and I thought we played him well.”

Chameera was Sri Lanka’s lone wicket-taker, eventually breaching the defence of Hope after earlier ending an opening stand of 143 when he yorked Evin Lewis, whose innings of 65 occupied 90 deliveries and was decorated with four fours and two sixes.

Hasaranga bowled a miserly ten-over spell but could not get the wickets needed to keep his team in the hunt.

Earlier, Sri Lanka subsided from a promising start with Gunathilaka’s demise making the headlines.

– Kicked ball –

Seeking to regain his ground at the non-striker’s end in turning down an opportunity for a single in the 22nd over off the bowling of home captain Kieron Pollard, Gunathilaka, who was moving backwards, kicked the ball out of the path of Pollard who was attempting to effect a run out.

With the West Indies appealing for the dismissal, on-field umpires Joel Wilson and Gregory Brathwaite turned to television official Nigel Duguid for clarification and the interpretation came back that it was determined to be a deliberate effort by the left-handed opener to impede the bowler.

Clearly not pleased with the verdict, Sri Lanka’s South African coach Mickey Arthur appeared to be seeking clarification on the ruling from Match Referee Richie Richardson shortly after.

Gunathilaka’s dismissal for a top score of 55 came two overs after Pollard had effected the breakthrough to end an opening stand of 105 with Dimuth Karunaratne, the Sri Lankan skipper justifying the decision to bat first on winning the toss with a fluent innings of 52.

Fresh from leading the home side to a 2-1 triumph in the preceding T20 International series, Pollard brought himself into the bowling attack in the 20th over and enjoyed immediate success, displaying remarkable athleticism after parrying a caught-and-bowled effort to dive full-length to his right and come up with a stunning catch.

Sri Lanka’s innings stuttered thereafter and it was only an even 50 from Ashen Bandara, one of two debutants in the tourists’ line-up, which lifted them to a respectable total.

Part-time off-spinner Jason Mohammed led the West Indies bowling effort with two for 12 while former captain Jason Holder snared two for 39 off ten overs with his seamers.
