FIA registers case against PTI chief Imran Khan for ‘prohibited funding’

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Tuesday booked PTI Chairman Imran Khan in the prohibited funding case as the agency ramps up the investigation into the matter.

The first information report (FIR) registered against the former prime minister has been lodged at the FIA’s banking circle police station.

In the FIR, the federal agency alleged that the Abraaj Group transferred $2100,000 to the PTI account in the branch of a bank situated at Jinnah Avenue in Islamabad.

Abraaj Group was a private equity firm, operating on six continents, which is currently in liquidation due to accusations of fraud.

In addition, the party received more financing from two bank accounts of Wotan Cricket Club, read the FIR.

The FIA said the manager of the private bank helped the agency in its probe into the questionable transactions.

Besides Khan, Sardar Azhar Tariq, Tariq Shafi, and Younis Aamir Kiani have also been nominated in the FIR. The FIA said the affidavit submitted to the ECP by businessman Arif Naqvi was also false.

The FIR also mentioned the manager of the same bank branch had also been nominated in the case. It added that there were 12 currency transaction reports and suspicious transaction reports that had to be reported by the bank officials to the concerned authorities, but they failed to do so.

The FIR alleged the branch’s operations manager had also failed to report these illegal transactions to the concerned authorities.

The FIR came just a day after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) issued a notice to the FIA in the prohibited funding case after PTI asked the court to stop the agency from probing the case.

The FIA has time and again summoned PTI leaders for questioning, however, not all of them have shown up.

On October 10, a district court in Lahore sent PTI leader Hamid Zaman on a 14-day judicial remand in the prohibited funding case.

The FIA had registered a case against Zaman, a trustee of the Insaf Trust, over prohibited party funding.

ECP finds prohibited funds

On August 22, 2022, the ECP, in a unanimous verdict, announced that the PTI received prohibited funding. The case was earlier referred to as the “foreign funding” case, but later the election commission accepted the PTI’s plea to refer to it as the “prohibited funding” case.

The commission found that donations were taken from America, Australia, Canada and the UAE.

PTI received funds from 34 individuals and 351 businesses including companies, the ECP verdict stated.

Thirteen unknown accounts also came to light, said the commission in the verdict, adding that hiding accounts are a “violation” of Article 17 of the Constitution.

The funds were also in violation of Article 6 of the Political Parties Act.

Moreover, the ECP found that Khan submitted a false Nomination Form I and that the affidavit provided regarding party accounts was also not authentic.

Following ECP’s declaration, the FIA launched a formal countrywide investigation into the utilisation of funds from “prohibited” sources by the PTI.

A five-member monitoring team was constituted in this regard to supervise inquiries across Islamabad, Karachi, Peshawar, Lahore and Quetta. The team was headed by Muhammad Athar Waheed.

RCCI urges for reduction in SBP Policy rate

Rawalpindi: /DNA/ – The Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) has expressed regret over the State Bank’s maintaining the monetary policy rate at 15%. In a statement, RCCI President Saqib Rafiq, said that the business community was expecting a reduction in interest rates so that the wheel of the economy can run. “Bringing the policy rate down to single digit can be very helpful in reviving business activities and turning around the downward slide of the economy amid the prevalent challenging times, “he added. The policy interest rate in neighboring countries is under single digit, India 5.90pc, Bangladesh 5.75 pc, he said.

Saqib Rafiq said that the cost of production has increased many times due to inflation. The high interest rate would increase the credit cost of commercial banks, ultimately having a bad effect on the growth of industrial activities and create more difficulties for the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) in its effort to revive the economy, he further added.

Due to economic challenges, the savings of businessmen and industrialists have decreased.

He said that it is difficult to get loans due to high interest rates. As the business of small industries and SMEs depended on credit, he demanded that the decision to maintain interest rates should be reconsidered. He said Pakistan needed quick revival of business and industrial activities to improve the ailing economy.

RCCI chief lauded the Finance Minister’s announcement of releasing Letters of Credit payments upto fifty thousand dollars. However, he demanded that due to the delay in opening of LC, traders have suffered a lot, and demurrage charges should be abolished at the port.

Twisting President’s statement: Fawad dares imported govt to probe cypher rather lying

DNA

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Central Senior President Fawad Chaudhary lashed out at the imported government for lying blatantly on cypher instead of conducting a probe into the matter.

In a statement on Tuesday, Fawad Chaudhry said the incumbent government has no problem in lying blatantly about the cypher.

He criticized journalists for promoting the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz’s (PML-N) narrative pertaining to the cypher by twisting the statements of President Arif Alvi on the matter during an exclusive interview with a private TV channel.

“This is an example to judge these people who have no problem in lying blatantly,” he said. “If Imran Khan’s government was not sent packing through a conspiracy then why is the government shying away from conducting an investigation into the matter,” he questioned.

Expressing disappointment on State Bank of Pakistan’s (SBP) report, Fawad Chaudhary stated that the economy was in shambles, as the 2% growth rate showed how unemployment was on the rise.

He said that the unemployment was dangerous which would rapidly impact poverty.

Business Community calls for avoiding any measures to seal the Capital

Islamabad, OCT 11: /DNA/ – Ahsan Zafar Bakhtawari, President, Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) said that the placement of containers at the entry points of Islamabad has created lot of concerns in the business community and stressed that the government should avoid taking any measures to seal the Capital due to any situation as it would destroy businesses and further weaken the economy.

He said that the business community has already spent the last two years in problems because the Covid-19 pandemic had destroyed business activities due to which it was difficult for them to meet their daily expenses. Now the high inflation has created new difficulties for people including the business community as businesses are shrinking due to reduced purchasing power of consumers. He said that in these difficult conditions, placement of containers at the entry points of the city is spreading panic among the business community and the citizens.

Ahsan Zafar Bakhtawari said that the containers have also reduced the attendance of workers in the industrial areas. He was afraid that sealing of the city due to any political march or sit-in will not only make the citizens prisoners at home, it will also disrupt the supply system, bring production activities to a standstill, create shortage of daily food items for people and lead to economic killing of the business community.

ICCI President said that the closure of the city will also create problems for the patients as it will be difficult to get them to the hospital in case of emergency and there will also be shortage of medicines. He said that in such a situation, it will not be possible for students to reach the educational institutions due to which their education will suffer. He demanded that the government should avoid taking any steps to seal the city and allow business activities to run smoothly. He also appealed to the Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Shahbaz Sharif and Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah to take notice of this situation and sealing of the Capital should be avoided at all costs.
