Argentina’s World Cup winners reach home to hero’s welcome

Buenos Aires: Thousands of ecstatic fans gave Argentina’s football squad a hero’s welcome in Buenos Aires in the early hours before dawn on Tuesday after the plane carrying Lionel Messi and his World Cup-winning team mates touched down at Ezeiza airport.

The Argentine capital has been in party mode since their dramatic victory over France in Sunday’s final in Qatar, which gave the country its first World Cup win since Diego Maradona hoisted the trophy 36 years ago.

The players, wearing their gold winners’ medals around their necks and taking turns to hold the World Cup trophy aloft, waved at fans from an open-top bus as the lights from thousands of mobile phones sparkled and flags fluttered in the crowd.

Joyous fans sang to the beat of a drum and fireworks lit up the sky as the bus slowly wound its way through the crowd.

Thousands had tracked the plane, the state airline Aerolineas Argentinas AR1915, all the way from Doha and a stop-off in Rome.

The players are expected to spend a few hours at the Argentine Football Association (AFA) facilities near the airport before heading at noon to the huge Obeliso monument in the centre of town, where hundreds of thousands are likely to gather.

Argentina beat France 4-2 on penalties after a scintilaing 3-3 draw, with Messi scoring twice France’s Kylian Mbappe netting three times.

Messi, 35, announced that the final would be his last match in the World Cup though he intends to play a few more games for the national side.

Messi’s jersey ready

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni said that he will keep Messi’s jersey ready in case the talismanic captain wishes to play at the next World Cup after he ended the country’s 36-year wait to hoist the golden trophy again.

On a night of high drama, Messi scored two goals and again in the shootout as he led Argentina to an emotional 4-2 win on penalties over France on Sunday, with the match ending in a 3-3 draw following 120 minutes of breathtaking action.

After finally fulfilling a lifelong dream by lifting the ultimate prize in world soccer, many thought the 35-year-old Messi may never again come out wearing the famed blue and white stripes of Argentina. But within a few moments, Messi declared that he does not plan to retire from international duty in near future.

It was a decision welcomed by his coach.

“I think we should keep the number 10 jersey prepared for the next World Cup if he (Messi) feels like playing,” Scaloni told a news conference.

“He earned the right to do whatever he wants with his career. What he transmits to his team mates is incredible. I have never seen such an influential person in the changing room.

Scaloni said following last year’s Copa America triumph, when they beat Brazil in the final, they started to feel unbeatable.

“After (we beat) Brazil, I had a conversation with Messi… (and explained) we had a big task in-front of us, people from our country were starting to believe (in our World Cup chances), to hope, and pressure was rising,” said Scaloni.

“He told me that ‘We have to keep going, nothing else matters’ and that gave me a tremendous emotional boost.

“I realised that we were on the verge of (achieving) something (big).”

Opposition submits no-confidence motion against CM Elahi in Punjab Assembly

LAHORE: A delegation of PPP and PML-N lawmakers submitted on Monday night a no-confidence motion against Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi in the Punjab Assembly, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said.

The confirmation from Sanaullah came during an interview after opposition lawmakers, including PPP Parliamentary Leader Hassan Murtaza, PML-N’s Khawaja Imran Nazir, Chief Whip of PML-N Tahir Khalil Sindhu and others reached the Punjab Assembly Secretariat and submitted the no-trust motion.

It was formally received by Punjab Assembly Secretary Inayat Hussain Lak.

The document submitted by the opposition, a copy of which is available, stated that members of the PPP and the PML-N of the provincial assembly had lost confidence in CM Elahi’s ability to lead the house as per the Constitution.

It added that Elahi had “massacred democratic traditions” and thus he had lost the confidence of the majority of members of the house.

The no-trust move was moved under “Article 136 of the Constitution read with Rule 23 of the Rules of Procedure Provincial Assembly of Punjab (PAP), 1997”.

According to Article 136, a resolution for a vote of no-confidence moved by not less than twenty per cent of the total membership of the provincial assembly may be passed against the chief minister by the provincial assembly.

A resolution referred to in clause (1) shall not be voted upon before the expiration of three days, or later than seven days, from the day on which such resolution is moved in the Provincial Assembly.

If the resolution referred to in clause (1) is passed by a majority of the total membership of the Provincial Assembly, the Chief Minister shall cease to hold office.

Separately, a no-trust motion has also been submitted against PA Speaker Sibtain Khan under Article 53 of the Constitution.

PM Shehbaz for ‘no additional burden’ on gas, power consumers

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Monday directed relevant officials not to impose any additional burden on gas and electricity consumers.

He asked the distribution companies of Sui gas to improve the system of recovery of bills. He also ordered the bill payment system for gas and electricity to be made effective.

The premier’s directives came in a high-level cabinet meeting to devise a strategy for the reduction of circular debt in the energy sector held at the PM House in Islamabad to which provincial chief ministers were also invited.

Highlighting the importance of an increase in revenue generation within the energy sector, PM Shehbaz instructed officials to ensure all possible steps. He further directed them to improve the energy transmission system and stop losses and theft of electricity and gas.

Addressing officials concerned, the prime minister ordered to reduce the circular debt in the energy sector. Participants, in the meeting, considered the adoption of a comprehensive strategy to control the present circular debt in the oil and gas sectors.

PM Shehbaz said the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz’s (PML-N) government, its tenure from 2013 to 2018, had practically eradicated circular debt.

He resolved to bring debt under control with continuous efforts and effective planning and directed for reforms in the energy sector to be undertaken in a way that eliminates circular debt.

Indus Motor temporarily shuts down production plant in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s leading car assembler, Indus Motor Company (IMC), Monday announced a 10-day plant shutdown — the third time in the outgoing calendar year — due to “hurdles in import and clearance of consignments”.

The company, in a notice sent to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), revealed that the production plant will be completely shut down from December 20 to December 30 (both days inclusive).

The IMC management mentioned that the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) introduced in May a mechanism, via a circular, for obtaining prior approval for the rt of completely knocked down (CKD) kits and components of Passenger cars (HS Code 8703 category) for the auto sector.

“[However,] the delay in aforesaid approvals for the company and its vendors has created hurdles in import and clearance of consignments for raw materials and components of the company,” the IMC said in the notice.

“This has resulted in insufficient inventory levels and consequently created an adverse impact on the supply chain and production activities,” the company said, adding that it is unable to continue its production activities.

The coalition government, since reigning into power, has been trying to curb imports in the face of fast-depleting foreign reserves, a declining currency and a widening current account deficit, because of which the rupee has lost over 26% of its value this year.

The move has had a cascading effect on industries that rely on imports to complete finished goods as they say the central bank has delayed the clearance of letters of credit with banks facing a shortage of dollars, affecting their ability to import materials.

It should be noted that the IMC had announced a temporary shutdown of its production plant from September 1 to September 15 on insufficient inventory levels to maintain its production, as well as on account of a delay in approvals from the SBP for the import of CKD kits and components of passenger vehicles.

The company had also shut down its plant earlier in the current month from August 1 to August 13, 2022.

‘Imported’ govt failed to deal with attacks from Afghanistan: Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD: Blaming the coalition government for the terrorist attack in Bannu, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan Monday said the “imported government” has failed to deal with cross-border attacks by “security forces of a ‘friendly’ Afghan government”.

Taking to his official Twitter handle, Khan said: “Apart from running our economy to the ground, this imported government has failed to deal with the 50% increase in terrorism in Pakistan with incidents from Chaman to Swat to Lakki Marwat to Bannu.”

A day earlier, terrorists attacked the Counter-Terrorism Department’s (CTD) compound in Bannu following which internet services were suspended and the roads leading to and from the Bannu Cantonment were blocked.

“While our soldiers, police [and] local [people] are giving daily sacrifices with their lives, the worst part is that this increasing terrorist threat [and] attacks from across our Western border are finding no space in the discourse of this government of a cabal of crooks,” the former prime minister wrote referring to the unfortunate incident.

He went on to say that the Pakistan Democratic Movement-led government is only interested in their NRO II and its preservation.

“Therefore, despite the economy tanking they are petrified of holding elections which is the only way to stabilise the economy through political stabilisation,” he said renewing his demand for fresh elections.

It should be noted that talks between Pakistani officials and the leadership of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) are underway in Afghanistan, confirmed Mohammad Ali Saif, spokesperson of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government.

According to a foreign news agency, Pakistani authorities opened talks to try to resolve a stand-off with the TTP who were holding several security personnel hostages after seizing control of a counter-terrorism facility in the country’s northwest a day earlier.

“We are in negotiations with the central leaders of the Pakistani Taliban in Afghanistan,” said Saif.

The spokesperson warned of strict action if the armed men do not surrender.
