Over 230 Palestinians martyred as Israel launches retaliatory strikes in Gaza

Jerusalem, OCT 8: The death toll from Saturday’s massive attack by Hamas on Israel has risen to 300 while over 1,000 have been injured with Palestinian gunmen escaping with dozens of hostages including military personnel, Israeli media reported on Sunday.

More than 230 Gazans were also martyred when Israel responded with one of its most devastating days of retaliatory strikes. Fighting continued into the night.

Hamas said its unprecedented offensive by land, air and sea was in response to the desecration of the Al Aqsa Mosque as well as Israeli atrocities against Palestinians over the decades. These include the 16-year blockade of Gaza, Israeli raids inside West Bank cities over the past year, increasing attacks by settlers on Palestinians as well as the growth of illegal settlements, according to Al Jazeera.

Mohammed Deif, a Hamas military commander, said the time has come “for the enemy to understand… they cannot keep going without consequences”.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to turn the besieged Palestinian enclave into a “deserted island”.

“We will take mighty vengeance for this wicked day,” PM Netanyahu said.

“Hamas launched a cruel and wicked war. We will win this war but the price is too heavy to bear,” he said. “Hamas wants to murder us all. This is an enemy that murders mothers and children in their homes, in their beds. An enemy that abducts elderly, children, teenage girls.”

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said the assault that had begun in Gaza, a narrow strip that is home to 2.3 million Palestinians, would spread to the West Bank and Jerusalem. Gazans have lived under an Israeli blockade for 16 years.

Bodies of Israeli civilians were strewn across the streets of Sderot in southern Israel, near Gaza, surrounded by broken glass. The bodies of a man and woman were sprawled across the front seats of a car.

Senior military officers were among those killed in fighting near Gaza, the Israeli military said.

Israeli troops clashed with Hamas fighters throughout the night in some parts of southern Israel. In a briefing on social media, an Israeli army spokesperson said the situation was not fully under control.

The Israeli prime minister’s office said the security cabinet had approved steps to destroy the military and governmental capabilities of Hamas and Islamic Jihad “for many years”, including cutting electricity and fuel supplies and the entry of goods into Gaza.

In Gaza, black smoke, orange flashes and sparks lit the sky from explosions. Israeli drones could be heard overhead. Earlier, crowds of mourners had carried the bodies of martyrs through the streets, wrapped in green Hamas flags.

Gaza’s martyrs and wounded were carried into crumbling and overcrowded hospitals with severe shortages of medical supplies and equipment. The health ministry said 232 people had been killed and at least 1,700 wounded.

Streets were deserted apart from ambulances racing to the scenes of air strikes. Israel cut the power, plunging the city into darkness.

‘Gates of hell’

Israeli army Major General Ghasan Alyan warned Hamas had “opened the gates of hell”.

An AFP journalist in Gaza saw clouds of dust from the remains of bombed residential towers which Gaza’s interior ministry said contained 100 apartments.

Israel’s military said it had warned residents to evacuate before targeting the multi-storey buildings used by Hamas.

Israel’s state-run electricity company cut the power supply to Gaza as army flares lit up the night sky.

The escalation follows months of rising violence, mostly in the occupied West Bank, and tensions around Gaza’s border and at contested holy sites in Jerusalem.

Before Saturday, at least 247 Palestinians were marytred, 32 Israelis and two foreigners had been killed this year, including combatants and civilians, according to Israeli and Palestinian officials.

Hamas labelled its attack “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood” and called on “resistance fighters in the West Bank” as well as in “Arab and Islamic nations” to join the battle.

Its armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, claimed to have fired more than 5,000 rockets, while Hecht said Israel had counted more than 3,000 incoming rockets.

Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh said the group was on the “verge of a great victory”.

“The cycle of intifadas (uprisings) and revolutions in the battle to liberate our land and our prisoners languishing in occupation prisons must be completed,” he said.

‘Dangerous precipice’

Air raid sirens wailed across southern and central Israel, as well as in Jerusalem. In Tel Aviv, a gaping hole was ripped into a building, with residents boarding a bus to flee to safety.

The conflict sparked major disruption at Tel Aviv airport, where many carriers cancelled flights. Schools will remain closed on Sunday, the start of the week in Israel.

Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007, leading to Israel’s crippling blockade of the impoverished enclave of 2.3 million people.

Israel and Hamas have since fought several wars. The last major military exchange, in May, killed 34 Palestinians and one Israeli.

In northern Gaza on Saturday, hundreds of people fled their homes, carrying food and blankets, an AFP correspondent said.

Violence also erupted across the West Bank, including annexed east Jerusalem, with five Palestinians martyred and 120 wounded in clashes with Israeli forces and settlers, Palestinian medical services said.

Western capitals condemned the wave of attacks by Hamas, which Israel, the United States and European Union label as a terrorist group.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the attack “terrorism in its most despicable form”.

But Hamas drew support from other foes of Israel, with Iran’s supreme leader declaring he was “proud” and Lebanese group Hezbollah praising the “heroic operation”.

UN Middle East peace envoy Tor Wennesland warned of “a dangerous precipice” and called on all sides to “pull back from the brink”.

ICC World Cup 2023: High-flying South Africa beat Sri Lanka

ICC World Cup 2023: High-flying South Africa beat Sri Lanka

Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi, OCT 7: South Africa began their ICC World Cup 2023 campaign with a massive 102-run win against Sri Lanka at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi, India on Saturday.

It was raining fours and sixes in Delhi today and the Lankan bowlers became the victim of it as they were hit all over the ground by the Proteas’ destructive batting lineup who created multiple records in the process.

Batting first, South Africa set a gargantuan 429-run target for Sri Lanka courtesy of Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram’s blistering knocks.

All three batters completed their centuries with Markram scoring the fastest ever in the history of the World Cup as the 29-year-old completed his hundred in just 49 balls — breaking Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien record who scored a memorable hundred against England on just 50 balls in the 2011 World Cup, which too was played in India.

This was the highest-ever total in the history of the World Cup and also the first time three different batters scored a century in a single innings.

In reply to the Proteas’ colossal total, Sri Lanka were all out for 326 runs in 44.5 overs.

The Islanders started badly as the opener Pathum Nissanka was clean-bowled by Marco Jansen’s in-swinging beauty in the first over.

However, after Nissanka walked back to the pavilion, Kusal Mendis took charge of the Lankan batting lineup and, scored a quick 76 off 42 which included eight sixes and four fours.

For once, it seemed like Mendis would do the impossible tonight by chasing the colossal target but he fell prey to Kagiso Rabada.

Sri Lanka kept on losing wickets but after Mendis, Charith Asalanka played an excellent innings, scoring 79 off 65 with 12 boundaries.

Skipper Dasun Shanaka contributed 68 runs as well but nothing was enough in front of the tremendous target.

Sri Lanka will now look forward to recovering from this loss as they play their second World Cup match against Pakistan in Hyderabad on October 10.

Meanwhile, South Africa will take on Australia in Lucknow on October 12.

Taliban pledge closer ties with China, protection for Chinese citizens in Afghanistan

Taliban pledge closer ties with China

KABUL – The Taliban have issued a robust commitment to safeguard Chinese citizens in Afghanistan against terrorist threats, marking a deepening bond between the two nations that has raised concerns among global observers.

China, notably the first major world power to reestablish its embassy in Kabul following the Taliban’s takeover in 2021, has been intensifying its economic and infrastructural engagements with the Taliban-led government. Recent attacks targeting Chinese workers in Afghanistan prompted a firm response from the Taliban’s de facto foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi.

“We have undertaken substantial efforts to combat terrorism, and we view security threats against China as a challenge to our own security,” stated Minister Muttaqi during talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Tibet’s Niyingchi.

He further asserted, “We will not tolerate any activities that endanger China’s security and stability within Afghanistan.” While offering assurances of the safety of Chinese nationals in Afghanistan, specific details were not disclosed.

This meeting in Tibet signifies a new level of diplomatic engagement for the Taliban, with the use of anti-terrorism language in discussions with Chinese officials being notably unprecedented. China expressed hope that Afghanistan would continue its fight against terrorism and eliminate the East Turkestan Islamic Movement from its soil in its readout of the meeting.

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s top envoy, Wang Yi, expressed China’s desire to assist Afghanistan in enhancing its relations with neighboring countries and integrating more closely into regional economic cooperation.

Last month, Beijing appointed one of the first major nation ambassadors to present credentials to the Taliban leadership in Kabul. The reception of this envoy was marked by a high level of ceremony, signaling China’s eagerness to strengthen ties with the Taliban.

Experts are concerned that China’s alignment with the Taliban could diminish Western diplomatic pressure to address the Taliban’s controversial domestic policies, particularly those concerning the rights of women, girls, and religious minorities. The Taliban has recently banned girls from secondary and higher education and restricted women’s participation in the workforce.

Imran Khan Remains in Good Spirits Despite Challenging Conditions
Imran Khan Remains in Good Spirits Despite Challenging Conditions

Requests top court to take immediate notice of worst HR abuses
Hopes cycle of oppression, brutality would surely fail, truth would prevail

ISLAMABAD, OCT 6: /DNA/ – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Core Committee requested the Supreme Court (SC) to take immediate notice of attempts to deprive PTI Chairman Imran Khan of his fundamental right to a fair trial through false cases and flawed trials.
PTI Core committee discussed various important issues pertaining to the ongoing courts’ hearing against PTI Chairman Imran Khan in numerous fake, concocted and fabricated cases including the cipher
The participants of the meeting said that PTI Chairman was being targeted purely on political grounds and attempts were being made to push him out of the electoral race through illegal and undemocratic methods owing to his unprecedented popularity.
They revealed that Imran Khan was being targeted in a very hasty and fake cases in sheer violation of laws without waiting for the courts’ decisions. However, PTI Core Committee made it clear that the nation would not accept the murder of justice in any other case after Toshakhana case.
About the forthcoming general elections, the participants of the meeting urged the top court to immediately hear and decide the petitions to ensure holding elections within the constitutionally mandated time period of 90 days.
They recalled that the Election Commission of Pakistan had committed a criminal deviance from the Constitution by not adhering to the court’s orders to conduct elections of Punjab and Pakhtunkhwa assemblies.
PTI core committee stated that owing to the rising popularity of Imran Khan and PTI, preparations were being made once again to violate the constitution once again by not holding the elections within the constitutional period of ninety days.
They demanded that the SC should intervene by fulfilling the constitutional requirement to protect and safeguard the Constitution and made the electoral watchdog and the caretaker government bound to conduct the elections within the stipulated timeframe.
PTI Core Committee said that the apex court should stop the caretaker government for taking actions beyond its constitutional jurisdiction, including privatization, adding that the caretaker government should hold free, fair and on time polls.
They made it clear that Pakistan’s economic development could not possible without political stability, which could only be achieved through the elected government with mandate.
The forum warned that postponing the elections and insisting on national decision-making through an unelected government would lead to economic and political instability and chaos in the country.
PTI Core Committee also reviewed the contents and background of the interview of PTI central leader Usman Dar, its contents and background in detail, adding that there was no such precedent in our history of abducting political leaders through brutal use of state force and forcing them to give statements of the choice of the state kidnappers.

Illegal Afghans begin journey back home

Illegal Afghans begin journey back home

To accommodate the returnees, authorities have assigned a parking area at the Torkham border, ensuring staff deployment for attending to them

Shamim Shahid

Peshawar: Aghan immigrants residing illegally in Pakistan have started leaving the country after Islamabad issued a November 1 ultimatum to them a private newspaper reported.

The border officials, on Thursday, said more than 30 families comprising approximately 1,000 members have begun their journey back to war-torn Afghanistan following Caretaker Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti’s announcement that action will be taken against those staying illegally in Pakistan.

To accommodate the returnees, authorities have assigned a parking area at the Torkham border, ensuring staff deployment for attending to them and registration completion.

According to the officials, Afghan families in cities across the country have begun their departure to avoid being arrested and other consequences that could follow due to their illegal residence.

He said although they possessed Afghan Citizen cards issued by the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra), they were voluntarily returning to Afghanistan, as the economic and security situation in their country was better compared to Pakistan.

Hasrat urged fellow Afghans to leave Pakistan, citing difficulties in paying utility bills and the lack of stable job opportunities and businesses.

The Afghan citizens also requested financial assistance for those returning to Afghanistan, to enable them to rebuild their houses and start their livelihoods there.

Previously, Pakistan had requested all illegal immigrants to leave the country voluntarily by October 30 and warned of arrests and deportations after the deadline’s expiration.

On the other hand, a significant number of Afghan citizens residing in various Pakistani cities appealed for flexibility in the conditions as they said that their children were receiving education in Pakistan.

They expressed concerns that the abrupt departure would disrupt their children’s education. They were particularly worried about girls’ education in Afghanistan, as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan had banned girls’ from going to school.

Meanwhile, speaking for the first time on the recently announced policy of regulating all illegal aliens residing in Pakistan irrespective of their nationality, the Foreign Office clarified that Pakistan’s national policy on Afghan refugees remains unchanged.

“We continue to host 1.4 million Afghan refugees with exemplary generosity and empathy despite resource constraints, and economic challenges. As the situation in Afghanistan stabilises, we believe that it is the right time to upscale international efforts to create conditions conducive to the voluntary repatriation of Afghan refugees with honour and dignity,” said the spokesperson at the Foreign Office during the weekly media briefing.

She emphasised that Pakistan’s recent decision is not targeted against Afghan refugees.

“The decision of the Government of Pakistan is aimed at regulating illegal aliens residing in Pakistan, irrespective of their nationality. And Pakistan is well within the parameters of our sovereign domestic laws to act in this context,” she added.

Reacting to criticism about Afghan and other citizens being forcibly returned, the spokesperson said, “I would also like to state that the government’s policy envisages a phased and time-bound repatriation of all illegal foreigners residing in Pakistan. These include cases of individuals who are overstaying their visas and do not possess valid documentation. And I reiterate this is not directed against any specific nationality.”

With regards to the question about engagement with the Afghan authorities, she pointed out that Pakistan remains in contact with Afghan authorities and will continue to engage with them on all matters of bilateral interest, including the safe return of the refugees.

“However, as I said the latest decision pertains to illegal migrants and it does not pertain to refugees; these are two separate cases,” she said. On threats from across the Western borders, Pakistan says it has very clearly articulated its concerns about the threat of terrorism that it faces emanating from Afghanistan.

“This statement has been made by Pakistan on several occasions, including at international conferences and forums. At the same time, we believe in diplomacy and dialogue, and we will continue to engage with Afghan authorities to fight this threat and to ensure that Afghan soil is not used to foment terrorism against Pakistan,” said the FO spokesperson.

Regarding the repatriation of any foreigners who may be living here illegally, she said that the laws of Pakistan will take their course.

The Government of Pakistan will undertake this exercise in a phased, deliberate and orderly manner.

“The process will proceed depending on the number of illegal immigrants in Pakistan and the arrangements for their return to their respective countries,” she added.

“For individuals who violate Pakistani immigration laws, there are punishments in place and there are ways to deal with such cases, including repatriation to their home countries. With regards to the details on the procedures and the financial aspects of it, I would advise you to contact the relevant ministry, the Ministry of Interior which is in charge of law and order and in implementing this policy,” she advised.

Meanwhile, Pakistan and Afghanistan on Thursday met at a high-level meeting in Tibet where Islamabad reaffirmed its commitment to further strengthen bilateral ties with Kabul.

Pakistan begin WC with 81-run victory

Pakistan begin WC with 82-run victory

Quick dismissals by the Green Shirts left the batters stumbling after a steady start.

Hyderabad: Pakistan began their campaign at the World Cup 2023 with a bang as they claimed a 81-run victory over Netherlands at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, India on Friday.

Pakistan were completely back in the game as the bowlers put on a stranglehold on the Dutch, claiming back-to-back wickets.

Quick dismissals by the Green Shirts left the batters stumbling after a steady start.

Going deeper in the game, the Men in Green snapped a 50-run partnership between Bas de Leede and opener Vikramjit Singh, who played steadily since the start of his side’s run chase, before being bowled and caught for 52 off 67 balls.

Pakistan bowlers took charge, sending opener Max O’Dowd and Colin Ackermann to dugout.

Babar Azam’s dream to post a 300-run total was shattered as the opponents restricted Pakistan to 286 by taking quick wickets.

The national side’s batting line-up continued to falter as the Dutch bowlers dominated the innings despite Pakistan’s all out efforts to post a maximum target.

Haris Rauf smacked two boundaries and one sixer in his short stay before being stumped.

Earlier, back-to-back dismissals of Hassan Ali and Shadab Khan, who tried to keep up the momentum for the Men in Green after the fall of sixth wicket, put the side in a precarious position.

Iftikhar Ahmed was sent to the dugout for mere 9 runs after over a 100-run partnership between Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan was broken by the Dutch, denting Pakistan’s effort to rebuild the innings following the quick dismissals of the top order.

Top Pakistani batters Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq fell inside 10 overs with Pakistan at 38/3.

Zaman was first to get out while the Pakistani skipper also scooped one on leg side and fell cheaply at 5.

Later, Saud’s and Rizwan’s 120-run partnership took Pakistan to 162 before Netherlands Aryan Dutt dismissed Saud.

At the toss, Netherlands after winning asked Pakistan to bat first.

Earlier, Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards said he opted to bowl first as he believes it would be easier to bat under lights here at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.

Edwards, while talking at the toss, said that he was hopeful of a good performance against the Green Shirts because they’ve played Pakistan a lot in recent years.

On the other hand, Pakistani skipper Babar Azam said that they will be looking to set a target between 290-300.

This is the seventh time Pakistan and the Netherlands are facing off each other in an ODI. The two sides have faced off six times in the format, their first meeting in the 1996 iteration of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, and Pakistan have come out victorious on each occasion.

Pakistan toured the Netherlands last year for what was the first bilateral series between the two sides, and recorded a clean-sweep.

Pakistan have entered the 50-over World Cup as one of the favourites after an impressive run in the just-concluded World Cup cycle as they had the best win-loss ratio of 2.400 with 24 wins in 36 matches.

That the team has performed so consistently has also been because of their mainstays emerging as solid performers over the years.
