India’s religious & economic transformation challenging Pakistan

India’s religious & economic transformation

Mamoon Azeem

India finds itself at a pivotal juncture with the recent passage of a bill in Uttarakhand, a northern state governed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP, proposing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC). This code aims to replace religion-specific civil laws with a standardized set applicable to all, challenging the current diverse legal frameworks that vary across religions.

The Uniform Civil Code has been a longstanding constitutional recommendation with the idea of a unified set of rules for all citizens. The recent provisions under the new law include the banning of polygamy, setting minimum marriage ages, prohibiting marriage among close relatives, and ensuring equal inheritance rights for sons and daughters. It also attempts to regulate live-in relationships, sparking debates on personal freedom versus government intervention.

However, the move has faced opposition, primarily from the Muslim community, the largest minority in India, constituting over 14% of the population. Critics argue that the UCC infringes upon religious practices, particularly polygamy, deeply rooted in Islamic law. Additionally, tribal groups have voiced their dissent, emphasizing the need to respect the diverse cultural fabric of the country.

The introduction of the UCC aligns with the broader transformation underway in India. The BJP, under Modi’s leadership, is steering the country towards a Hindu Rashtra, as evident in the implementation of Hindutva-driven policies. The construction of the Ram temple and the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s autonomy were other significant promises fulfilled by the BJP, underscoring the party’s Hindu-centric agenda.

The political landscape is shifting as India experiences rapid economic growth, becoming the world’s fifth-largest economy. The growing influence of Hindutva not only impacts the social and religious freedoms of minorities but also signals a more assertive approach to regional geopolitics. The annexation of Kashmir and India’s assertive stance on the world stage reflect this shift.

In light of these developments, Pakistan must adopt a nuanced and strategic approach to safeguard its interests. India’s economic prowess and military capabilities pose significant challenges, requiring a balanced strategy that avoids both appeasement and high-risk confrontations.

India’s trajectory, marked by the intersection of religious transformation, economic growth, and geopolitical assertiveness, demands careful consideration and proactive measures from Pakistan. The evolving dynamics in the region necessitate a careful and critical evaluation of Pakistan’s policies, militarily, economically and politically. Pakistan shot itself in the foot by segregating the militaristic dimension from the economy and internal politics from day one. If our policymakers are serious about countering India, they must start by decreasing the political temperature and work on resolving the political polarization in society.

Pakistan’s forest crisis demands action

Pakistan's forest crisis

Mamoon Azeem

In the last 24 years, Pakistan has witnessed a disheartening loss of almost 20% of its forest cover, a research study by the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) revealed. This concerning decline in greenery is exacerbated by factors such as rapid population growth, rising urbanization, high poverty rates, and a scarcity of energy, particularly in the form of gas.

Cities like Lahore and Islamabad are witnessing the detrimental impact of infrastructure development, with large road structures taking a toll on forestation. Consequently, Pakistan now ranks among the countries with the lowest number of trees globally, possessing less than one billion trees. Furthermore, the total forest area in Pakistan has decreased by a significant 20% since 2000.

The causes are multifaceted, ranging from timber mafias exploiting forests to individuals resorting to wood fires due to erratic access to electricity. This grim scenario demands immediate attention and collaborative efforts to reverse the trend. To address this crisis, a comprehensive strategy is imperative. Enforcing and strengthening laws to protect forests, promoting reforestation efforts, and encouraging sustainable land-use practices are key components.

Moreover, increasing public awareness about the environmental significance of forests and the consequences of deforestation is essential. Alternative livelihoods for communities dependent on forest resources should be explored to reduce reliance on unsustainable practices. Collaboration with international organizations and neighboring countries is vital to address transboundary issues related to deforestation.

In the face of climate change and the vital role of forests in regulating weather patterns and carbon storage, Pakistan must act swiftly and decisively. The nation’s future sustainability hinges on a concerted effort to protect and replenish its dwindling forests. The time for action is now.

West’s media war

West’s media war

Mamoon Azeem

The shameful coverage of Israel’s war in Gaza is unprecedented and unparalleled in history. The one-sided portrayal of the conflict, often omitting crucial facts, serves to justify Israel’s actions and shield it from international scrutiny. This biased reporting is not merely a result of unprofessionalism; it reflects a deeper issue of the colonial mindset ingrained in Western journalism.

The media’s failure to provide accurate, balanced coverage stems from a history of imperial conquests and an inflated sense of self-importance. A prime example is The New York Times’ coverage, which downplayed the deaths of six Palestinian children, later revealed to be caused by Israeli strikes.

The recent visit of the US Secretary of State is portrayed as a cure to the decades long problem by the Western media, presenting the backers of the Jewish state as peace seekers with altruistic objectives in the region.

This form of journalism dehumanizes the colonized, echoing historical patterns observed by philosopher Frantz Fanon in the dehumanizing language used during colonialism.

In the context of Gaza, deaths are reported with a stark contrast – Israelis are active victims, while Palestinians are portrayed as aggressors, reinforcing a distorted narrative. As war rages on and international criticism mounts, it becomes evident that Western journalism is not merely reporting but actively taking part in the conflict, advancing a narrative that favors an occupying force over defenseless people.
