ISLAMABAD, Mar 27: Executive Director of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) in Karachi, Professor Dr. Tahir Saghir Friday stressed the urgent need for early checkups and healthy lifestyle habits to protect children’s hearts, highlighting that NICVD provides advanced paediatric cardiac care, including critical surgeries and interventional procedures to ensure even the youngest hearts grow strong and healthy.
While speaking to a local media channel, Dr Tahir Saghir explained we also offer advanced pediatric cardiac surgery services at National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, providing specialized care even for newborns with congenital heart conditions.
As one of the leading and only public-sector hospitals dedicated to comprehensive cardiac care for children, NICVD uses minimally invasive techniques that often eliminate the need for traditional open-heart surgery, he said, adding, this approach ensures less pain, faster recovery, and improved outcomes for our youngest patients.
In addition, NICVD proudly runs the First Pediatric Cardiac Electrophysiology Program, supported by modern MRI facilities for precise diagnosis and treatment, adding, this program focuses on detecting and managing heart rhythm disorders in children, enabling early intervention and better long-term health.
Our expert teams work collaboratively to provide complete, advanced cardiac care under one roof, making NICVD a center of excellence for pediatric heart treatment, he mentioned.
We are deeply grateful to the Government of Sindh for their continued financial support, which allows us to provide free or highly subsidized treatment to children in need, he said, adding, many young patients present with silent symptoms such as slow breathing, fainting, or unexplained weakness, which can indicate serious heart conditions.
Our Pediatric Emergency Department ensures timely evaluation and care so that no child is left untreated, giving families hope and a healthier future.
He stressed that excessive mobile phone usage has become one of the main contributing factors to children’s declining health, particularly due to reduced physical activity.
A sedentary lifestyle, combined with unhealthy habits, is increasing the risk of cardiac and other health issues among children, he said, adding, encouraging outdoor activities and limiting screen time is essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
He further highlighted that a lack of awareness among parents often leads to delayed recognition of early warning signs. Many symptoms, though subtle, can indicate serious underlying conditions if ignored. Therefore, educating parents about healthy routines, balanced nutrition, and timely medical consultation is crucial.
He concluded by urging families to adopt healthier lifestyles and remain vigilant about their children’s well-being. Greater parental awareness, regular physical activity and reduced dependence on mobile devices can play a significant role in preventing health complications and ensuring a healthier future for the younger generation.
