Literacy and its importance  in National Growth discussed

Islamabad: Rotary Club of Islamabad Metropolitan arranged a special talk on “Literacy and its role in National Growth” at a local hotel.  Guest Speaker was Admiral Mohammad Asif Sandila (Retd) NI(M) former Chief of Naval Staff and presently running  NPO “Moawin Foundation” promoting quality education in elementary and primary education. Dr Azra Yasmin, Secretary of the club introduced the guest speaker.

Admiral Asif Sandila emphasized on the importance of elementary and primary education. The change in society can only occur when a child has good and quality basic education taught in the national language. “There is a need to engage and collaborate with the private sector in bringing quality education within public sector schools specially in teachers training and monitoring their performance” said Admiral Asif Sandila.

Presently Moawin Foundation has collaborated with the public sector and runs more than 200 government schools across Pakistan which is an amazing success story.

Rotary District Governor Barrister Adnan SaboorRohaila also graced the occasion. In his address, the District Governor highlighted the importance of basic values, which can build a strong foundation for a child. Rohaila said that the character of a person in initial years of childhood, strong values system and social ethics are crucial for any resilient nation. We should make people literate with a focus on character building.

President Imran Ghaznavi in his welcome address pointed out that Rotary International has marked September as literacy month and indeed literacy can play a major role in national economic development.

At the end, certificates were distributed to senior educationists in recognition of their services in the education sector.

Dr. Shamim Zadhi, Dr. Ashraf Malik, Prof Ghulam Abbas Miana, DrAzra Yasmin, Dr Muhammad Ali Rana, Ambassador Fauzia Nasreen, Dr AmbreenSaba ,Safia Agha and Farkhanda Andrabi were among the award recipients.
