Shehbaz Sharif

RIAYDH, Apr 28 (APP/DNA): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday while terming the global inequity in health sector as ‘the first and foremost problem’ called upon bridging the widening gap between the Global South and the Global North.

Expressing his views in a session of the World Economic Forum (WEF) regarding global health, the prime minister said that the Covid-19 pandemic had exposed the existing gaps largely between the Global North and Global South in terms of provision of health facilities and distribution of vaccines.

He said that the climate change issue had also completely changed the landscape.

Pakistan was not responsible for any emissions in the world, he said, adding but in the year 2022, it witnessed the worst climate triggered floods which hugely devastated the infrastructure and buildings and as consequently, they had to spend billion of rupees to rehabilitate the affected people.

Prime Minister Shehbaz said that for the rehabilitation efforts, they sought costly loans. “Can a developing country like Pakistan afford it?” he questioned and observed that for provision of health facilities, a developing country like Pakistan required resources.

“The yawning gap between the Global South and Global North should be bridged,” he emphasised.

Sharing his personal experiences, the prime minister said that treatment for the fatal disease like cancer was too costly for the poor population of Pakistan.

He said that as a chief minister of Punjab, he had provided about 130 million inhabitants of the province with best medical treatment initiatives like screening and treatment facility for Hepatitis in the remotest and backward areas of the province where the poor people had been in dire need of basic facilities like education and health.

The prime minister further informed that as the former chief minister, he also established the first kidney and liver hospital in Punjab which was probably one of the best in Asia where the poor patients were provided with free of cost treatment.

About Dengue outbreak in 2011 in the province, he shared that the phenomenon in the health sector was one of the biggest in the world.

But they got experts and equipment and with the cooperation of entire government machinery, civil society and common man launched a massive drive against the dengue larvae, he added.

“They were able to control the outbreak with collective efforts and meager resources,” he said, adding that it was a test case for the global study in health sector.

The prime minister appreciated the initiatives launched by Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the health sector and said that they had been serving the ailing humanity with their kind gestures.

The prime minister, in his remarks, appreciated Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for their support and provision of vaccines for polio eradication drives in Pakistan.

He also acknowledged Bill Gates’ generosity during the 2022 floods to support the affected people of Pakistan.

He expressed that with their cooperation, they would be able to get rid from the polio.

Expressing his views, World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stressed upon collective efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He shared his concerns over the mortality rates of mothers and children, adding that about 54 countries were still far behind in achieving the SDGs targets. Another 4.9 billion people across the globe had no access to basic services, he added.

The DG said that the world was vulnerable to any pandemic but they had learnt from the past experiences and building on it.

Other participants opined that the conflicts in the world were increasing and impacting the health sector requirements and stressed that resource-rich countries should assist the communities in need.

They underlined the need of investing more in the health sector.

Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie named head coaches for white, red-ball cricket

Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie named head coaches for white

Lahore, APR 28: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi on Sunday announced that former South Africa top-order batter Gary Kirsten and ex-Australia fast bowler Jason Gillespie had been appointed head coaches for the men’s national team for white and red-ball, respectively.

He made the announcement while addressing a press conference in Lahore alongside PCB Chief Operating Officer (COO) Salman Naseer and Azhar Mahmood — who was announced as the assistant coach in all formats.

A separate press release issued by the PCB said the three appointments had been made for a two-year period following a recruitment process.

“Kirsten will take charge of the side immediately after completing his assignment in the Indian Premier League,” the PCB said.

During his tenure, besides the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 and other bilateral white-ball series, Kirsten will also be in charge of the side for next year’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan, ACC T20 Asia Cup 2025 and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka, it said.

It further said that Gillespie would assume responsibilities for the ICC World Test Championship fixtures against Bangladesh (at home in August), which would be followed by Tests against England (at home in October) and South Africa (away in December) in the 2024-25 season.

In the press release, Naqvi congratulated the two foreign coaches on their appointments, saying their “stellar track records precede them”.

“I have every confidence that their expertise will guide our players to reach new heights, aligning with their inherent talent and the expectations of our passionate fans. These high-quality appointments also present a remarkable opportunity for our players to glean insights from these seasoned professionals, refining their skills and fortifying their cricketing acumen,” he said.

“The PCB is unwavering in its commitment to furnish the national team with top-tier resources and facilities, fostering an environment conducive to unlocking their full potential and consistently delivering stellar performances,” he added.

The press release also had quotes from the two new head coaches. Gillespie said he was grateful to the PCB for “giving me the honour of coaching one of the most highly-regarded and talented cricket teams in the traditional format of the sport”.

“Within Pakistan we have a number of high-quality fast bowlers and being able to utilise them will be a key part of any success we enjoy. But we have quality in all departments — pace, spin, batting and keeping. We have all bases covered. It is exciting to know we have that talent and I am looking forward to working with such talented players,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kirsten said his goal was to “unite the Pakistan men’s white-ball team, harnessing their considerable talents towards a common objective, and achieving success together on the field”.

“My perspective on Pakistan cricket has remained consistent over time. There’s always an inherent expectation for the team to perform at a high level consistently. However, in team sports, maintaining peak performance is not always guaranteed. As a coach, it’s immensely gratifying to assist players in unlocking their full potential. I eagerly anticipate collaborating with the individual players and the team, facilitating their growth and development,” he said.

“My primary objective is to ensure the team operates at its optimal level. Success on the field is contingent upon the team performing at its best. Consistency and continuity are values I hold dear. While player form fluctuations are inevitable, maintaining a stable environment is crucial. I am committed to supporting players through their ups and downs, prioritising continuity in selections whenever possible,” he said.

‘New coaches for giving team best of the best’
During the press conference, Naqvi said that Kirsten and Gillespie were world-famous coaches and their arrival gave “100 per cent confirmation” of the trust they had in the team.

Talking about Azhar, Naqvi said that his family was settled in the United Kingdom yet he left them and a “very good offer” behind to serve Pakistan.

“The Pakistani nation should know that Azhar came here purely for Pakistan and the Pakistan team and I am hopeful that he will play his role. He will be a [bond] between Test cricket and white-ball cricket,” he said.

He said that the purpose of bringing in the coaches was to give the Green Shirts the “best of the best”. Giving an example, he said there was a small device, which was expensive, that was required by physiotherapists.

“This was pending for so long. Yesterday, when I was standing with the physiotherapists […] they were so happy that we had gotten the device for them […] the cricket board’s job is not to accumulate money in the bank, its job is to spend the money on cricket and the team […].”

USA vs. China: The World Stands to Lose

Qamar Bashir

By: Qamar Bashir

It appears that the USA is feeling nervous, unsettled, and jittery due to China’s mature response to US accusations, charges, and intimidation, and is puzzled by China’s refusal to be drawn into a Cold War with the US and its allies. This unease was evident in an interview with CNN at the end of his visit to China (23-26 April) where US Secretary of State Antony Blinken leveled multiple accusations against China.

Blinken accused China of interfering in the 2024 US presidential elections, claiming that the USA has evidence of attempts to influence and interfere, which he deemed totally unacceptable. He reiterated his warning to China to cease playing on existing social divisions in the US in influence campaigns.

On the diplomatic front, Blinken warned China to halt its support for Russia’s efforts to ramp up production of tanks, munitions, and armored vehicles and to upgrade Russia’s defense industrial base. He threatened to sanction more than 100 Chinese entities and individuals if such support continues. He further threatened that if China did not comply, the US and its allies would increase pressure on Chinese companies.

Recently, the US Congress and Senate approved $8 billion in military aid to Taiwan to enhance its defensive and offensive capabilities. This move is seen as an unnecessary provocation aimed at escalating tensions in the region, endangering peace both regionally and globally. Additionally, the US Congress passed a bill to ban the popular app TikTok in the US and imposed aggressive restrictions and embargoes on semiconductor exports to China.

The US is concerned about China’s advancements in semiconductor technology, fourth-generation New Electric Vehicles (NEVs), solar panels, and lithium batteries, which surpass those of the US and Europe. It is also impressed by China’s achievements in agriculture, green technologies, its advanced space program, and its development of strong defense systems. The US accuses China of engaging in unfair trade practices that threaten American jobs and businesses, particularly in the lead-up to the November US presidential election. The US argues that China’s large capacity makes it difficult for the global market to absorb its products, leading to challenges for American and other foreign firms.

Despite the US’s aggressive stance, China has demonstrated patience, restraint, and maturity. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has responded to US accusations with composed and logical arguments, rejecting unfounded claims without provoking or antagonizing the US or its allies.

Regarding allegations of election manipulation, China has firmly denied any intention to interfere in the US election. China maintains that it upholds friendly relations with the American people based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation. China asserts that meddling in another country’s internal affairs is not its approach to bilateral or multilateral relations.

China has taken a principled stand on the Russia-Ukraine war, advocating for addressing the root causes of the conflict and considering the concerns of both Russia and Ukraine. China has proposed an international peace conference to resolve the crisis through diplomatic means. China has warned against exploiting the situation for selfish gains and emphasized the need to avoid factionalism or bloc confrontation.

Regarding Taiwan, China maintains that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China, a position reaffirmed by the Cairo Declaration in 1943, the Potsdam Declaration of 1945, and UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, which recognize the one-China principle. China opposes the supply of arms to Taiwan, seeing it as increasing the risk of conflict and undermining regional peace and stability. China considers the Taiwan issue an internal matter, with reunification being a decision for the Chinese people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. China has stated its unwavering commitment to preventing Taiwan’s separation from China, warning the US against interfering in the region and underestimating China’s resolve and defense capabilities.

China has denounced the US containment policy as ineffective and counterproductive, emphasizing the importance of friendly relations between the two countries for the well-being of their peoples and the world. China believes that US efforts to contain its development, impose sanctions, and hinder its science and technology advancements will harm both nations.

Despite China’s friendly approach and restraint, the US is applying its typical carrot and stick strategy, which has worked with other nations, though it may need to reconsider this approach with China.

The US strategy to manipulate China is indeed intriguing. Initially, it encouraged reliance and dependence of Chinese companies on the US market, using this as leverage to influence China’s economy and its affairs. This includes imposing embargoes, hefty taxes, and duties on Chinese exports, sanctioning Chinese companies, and banning Chinese social media apps. The US is also pressuring its allies to impose sanctions and fines on Chinese companies, encircling China to intimidate and contain it.

The US is using rating, ranking, and indexing organizations to manipulate Chinese financial, economic, and sovereign ratings in order to damage China’s image and that of its companies. It is leveraging existing alliances and forming new ones to counter China. The US has also implemented a de-risking strategy to reduce overreliance on China. Additionally, it has established the “Five Eyes,” a spying organization involving five countries focused on China. Finally, if peaceful measures fail to achieve its objectives, the US may resort to kinetic means.

China, in contrast, has responded to US pressures with pragmatism, taking numerous steps at its own expense to allay American concerns. However, despite these efforts, US pressure on China continues to mount. The global community is anxiously hoping that China’s patience will not falter, and that tensions between the two nations will ease. The alternative—a prolonged escalation of hostilities—is deeply concerning and scary, given that the combined military capabilities of both countries could devastate our planet multiple times over.

German envoy called out for ‘lecture’ on civil rights by pro-Palestinian protesters

German envoy called out for 'lecture' on civil rights by pro-Palestinian protesters

Lahore, APR 27 /DNA/ – Pro-Palestinian activists disrupted the speech of German Ambassador to Pakistan Alfred Grannas when he took the podium to speak at the Asma Jahangir Conference 2024 in Lahore on Saturday.

The German envoy was called out by the representatives of the Progressive Students’ Collective when he began his speech during the annual conference, the theme of which this year is ‘The People’s Mandate: Safeguarding Civil Rights in South Asia’.

As Grannas started speaking, one of the guests at the event, an activist, who was standing in the middle of the conference hall, said: “Excuse me Mr ambassador. Excuse me. I’m shocked by your audacity that you are here to talk about civil rights.”

The activist also questioned the envoy about his government’s complicity in the ongoing genocide, as his speech was largely aimed at exploring the state of human and civil rights in South Asia, including Pakistan.

“Why your country is brutally abusing the people speaking for the rights of Palestinians,” the activist said, addressing the German envoy.

Ambassador Grannas, who was visibly taken aback, began shouting while asking the protesters not to shout. He also gestured at the students while waving his left hand in the air, asking them to “go out”.

“If you want to shout, go out, and there you can shout because shouting is not a discussion. That it is [sic]… if you want to discuss…,” the envoy said, soon after which the conference went off-air for a while on a digital media platform’s YouTube channel.

However, the speech by Ambassador Grannas resumed in a matter of few minutes.

The protest by the activist came days after the conference organisers shared that the envoy would participate in the event.
However, the curtain raiser about his participation in the event garnered immense criticism from users on X, formerly Twitter, who questioned his presence owing to Germany’s support for Israeli offensive in Gaza.

When reached out for a comment by Geo.tv regarding the envoy’s mic being muted, Munizae Jahangir — journalist and board member of the Asma Jahangir Foundation, clarified: “German ambassador mic was not muted at all, we don’t have that technology or above all, the intention.”

She also maintained that the conference had arranged a “full panel on Palestine” and with great difficulty got a noted human rights activists recognised as a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International.

“We have over 22 sessions, 140 female lawyers from across Pakistan (including far flung areas like Turbat, Gilgit and newly-merged districts) 140 prosecutors, ambassador from more than 12 countries, and 80 speakers,” she said.

She added that the holding conference every year was only made possible due to the “hundreds of hours of voluntary work go into it by lawyers and journalists who are committed to human rights values”.

Jahangir further said that this was “our commitment to Asma’s principles of democracy and free speech”.

The German government has been explicitly backing Israel in its war on Gazans following the October 7 surprise attack by Hamas, providing both diplomatic support and significant transfer of arms, while it has also meted out harsh treatment to protestors demonstrating against the genocide of Palestinians in Germany.

Over 34,000 Palestinians, including more than 25,000 children and women, in Gaza have been killed following Israel’s brutal offensive in the wake of October 7 attack.

Almost all countries in the Western and European world have extended their support to Israel despite unabated deadly attacks on innocent civilians.
