APHC condemns deteriorating human rights situation in IIOJK

ISLAMABAD, JUN 1 (DNA): The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) has strongly denounced the alarming deterioration of human rights in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) especially since Narendra Modi-led Indian government scrapped the territory’s special status in August 2019.

The APHC spokesman Advocate Abdul Rashid Minhas in a statement in Srinagar said that the occupation troops have martyred 875 Kashmiris, injured over 2,400, and arrested approximately 24,015 since August 5, 2019. In the just concluding month of May, eight Kashmiris, including three in fake encounters or custody, were martyred, 703 youth were arrested, and four were injured, he added.

He criticized the Indian government’s actions aimed at suppressing the freedom of expression and perpetuating a culture of fear through draconian measures in the occupied territory. With nearly one million troops deployed, IIOJK has become one of the most militarized zones globally, the spokesman said.=DNA

NEPRA approves major electricity price hike

NEPRA

ISLAMABAD, JUN 1 /DNA/ – Amid rising inflation, electricity consumers in Pakistan are facing another financial blow as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a significant increase in electricity prices.

The hike ranges from Rs1.90 to Rs3.28 per unit, adding to the financial burden of households and businesses alike.

NEPRA has forwarded its decision to the government, citing the need for a quarterly adjustment as the primary reason for the price hike. This increase is set to be effective for the months of June, July, and August, impacting electricity bills during the peak summer season when consumption is typically high.

This adjustment will affect not only the general electricity consumers, but also those served by distribution companies (DISCOs) across the country. The decision comes at a time when inflation is already straining the budgets of many Pakistani families, further exacerbating the cost of living.

Meanwhile, in a move that will bring relief to millions of Pakistanis, the government has announced a significant reduction in the prices of petroleum products.

The government of Pakistan has issued a notification announcing a significant reduction in the prices of petroleum products, effective immediately. According to the notification, the price of petrol has been reduced by Rs 4.74 per liter. Additionally, the price of high-speed diesel has been decreased by Rs 3.86 per liter.=DNA

Over 1200 youth opt smoking per day in Pakistan needs stakeholders attention: Experts

ISLAMABAD, May 31 (DNA): Anti tobacco experts said that over 1200 youth opt smoking per day in Pakistan which needs special attention of stakeholders.

The Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) on Friday organized a special stakeholder discussion on World Tobacco Day being observed under the theme Protecting Children from Tobacco Industry Interference.

Syed Ali Wasif Naqvi, Head of Policy, Advocacy and Outreach, SDPI in his presentation said as per the 2022 data, over 37 million adolescents aged 13-15 globally use tobacco. “In the WHO European Region, 11.5 percent of boys and 10.1 percent of girls in this age group are tobacco users. Notably, electronic cigarettes and nicotine pouches are increasingly popular among youth, with 12.5 percent of adolescents in the European Region using e-cigarettes in 2022 compared to 2 per cent of adults,” he said.

Naqvi mentioned that with over 1200 children initiating tobacco use daily in Pakistan, and permeation of electronic tobacco and nicotine products in schools, colleges, and universities, the statistics from Pakistan are even more alarming.
The tobacco industry, he said, targets youth to replace millions of customers lost annually to death or cessation. The industry employs appealing products and advertising tactics aimed at children and adolescents, using social media and streaming platforms, he added.

Dr Amina Khan, Executive Director, The Initiative, said, “Generally 1 out of 3 people die of tobacco who do not quit tobacco use or smoking, whereas 1200 children between the age of 6-15 start smoking every day in Pakistan. Two out of five adult smokers start smoking at the age of 10 which rings alarm bells for all to start focusing on the toddlers.”

She noted that the policy and implementation of Pakistan was ranked very well globally whereas it should be kept abreast with the emerging trends of the tobacco industry as modern products like vapes, velo, and smokeless tobacco products are introduced that don’t fall under the legislation.

To protect youth, she said the availability of single cigarettes, advertisement, and prevention needs to be given a high priority in the enforcement, policy, and awareness endeavours.

“Youth engagement in policy-making is important to devise policy actions that are well guided and properly conceived in line with the ground realities to bear optimum results,” she added.
Dr Minhaj us Siraj, CEO Health Syndicate, said the tobacco industry was engaging with children through labour in the tobacco fields, whereas those kids were not able to enter schools to acquire education for life. He also mentioned “green leaf disease”. He added that without the civil society’s support no achievement in this cause was possible.

Dr Waseem Janjua, Research Fellow, SDPI, said the tobacco industry uses misleading tactics through advertisements promoting tobacco products that were trapping the innocent youth of the country.

He said according to a study in the US, the tobacco industry was pumping in $7.62 billion in lieu of tobacco promoting advertisements that indicated the massive magnitude of capital investment to mislead masses on smoking.

Imran Khan: ‘I am denied even basic rights as a prisoner’

Imran Khan: 'I am denied even basic rights as a prisoner'

ISLAMABAD, MAY 31: The former Prime Minister of Pakistan, currently imprisoned, says he is deprived of basic prisoner rights.

Imran Khan stated that the current authorities are using psychological tactics to break his spirit.

“I find myself confined in what is referred to as a death cell – a small, isolated space typically reserved for terrorists. The authorities are determined to cast me in this light. In solitary confinement, I am denied even the basic rights of a prisoner. They employ psychological tactics to break my spirit, but my heart, fortified by faith in Allah, remains strong. I keep myself occupied and mentally sharp through exercise and reading,” Khan added.

In an online interview from prison with a British journalist, Imran Khan named the former Chief of Army Staff, Qamar Javed Bajwa, as responsible for his current situation, claiming that Bajwa had orchestrated his imprisonment.

This interview is considered the first of Imran Khan’s interviews from prison.

He continued: “General Bajwa single-handedly spread stories to countries like the US, painting me as anti-American or uninterested in good relations with them. The narrative that our trip to Russia was made unilaterally without consultation is completely false. The trip was a collective decision made after extensive deliberations. Yet, he portrayed it as an anti-American initiative by Imran Khan alone. His insatiable thirst for power rendered him unpredictable. God knows what other lies he disseminated to various countries.”

According to Khan, General Bajwa’s harmful actions might have short-term effects, but they will not last.

In response to a question regarding the latest elections in Pakistan, Imran Khan considered the current government of Pakistan illegitimate, stating that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) led by Nawaz Sharif won only 17 seats in the election.

“This is not just my perspective; ask any Pakistani, and they will tell you this government is not legitimate. My party’s victory was clear, despite their efforts to undermine our identity and leadership,” Imran Khan said.

The former Prime Minister of Pakistan said the world should raise its voice for the future of Pakistan’s 250 million people and democracy.

Khan said: “This is not just about Imran Khan. This is an attack on democracy and the right to self-determination of 250 million people. Silence has prevailed while men, women, and children have been killed, abducted, and tortured. Only one political party has been victimized in every conceivable way. Recently, my information secretary was attacked on the road with blades. Platforms like X have been blocked in Pakistan for months. Mentioning my name on TV is prohibited. My main leaders are still not allowed to appear on national television. Every party in the country describes this election as the worst in our history. Elections are supposed to bring political stability by earning the people’s trust and mandate.”

The former prime minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, and his wife, Bushra Bibi, have been sentenced to 14 years in prison for selling gifts received from the leaders of foreign governments, including the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia.

Both Imran Khan and Shah Mehmood Qureshi, the former Foreign Minister of Pakistan, have been sentenced to ten years in jail in connection with the case of leaking confidential government documents.

Last Ditch Battle

The dynamics of the political landscape in Pakistan are shifting rapidly. PTI has introduced new strategies and pieces, while the other party is making desperate moves to stay in the game, fearing the loss of its most effective and lethal piece, the judiciary that has previously demonstrated the ability to eliminate even the most powerful opponents. However, it still retains two powerful pieces: the parliament and the executive. Despite their inherent strength, these have been significantly weakened due to alleged credibility, legitimacy, and legality issues.

Earlier, the secured resourceful, all powerful and fortified king, the supra executive having three  most powerful pieces; the parliament, the judiciary and the executive on its side, successfully cornered and imprisoned the PTI’s king and was sure of its success until the judiciary decided to part ways and reclaimed its independence.

The incarcerated king, like a punching bag of steel, refused to bend, break, intimidate, or harass. He knew very well that he had been captured and delinked from its pawns and power pieces, but not yet defeated. He made clever defensive moves and allowed the other party to attack him relentlessly, using him like a punching bag. As a sportsman of the highest caliber, he perhaps knew that his rival would soon punch itself out, expending so much energy in its attacks that it would be exhausted, potentially leading to its own downfall or giving the opponent a chance to recover and counterattack.

The PTI was strengthened by the judiciary’s increasing independence from the executive, raising the stakes higher. The judiciary began exercising its independence which was reflected in its decision notably on April 1, when the Islamabad High Court suspended jail sentences of Imran Khan and Bibi in the state gifts case. The Lahore High Court restored Imran Khan’s interim bail in seven cases related to the May 9 riots and suspended his 14-year jail sentence. In May 2024, the Islamabad High Court granted bail to Imran Khan in the 190 million pounds corruption case, in which he and his wife were accused of receiving land worth billions of rupees as a bribe from a real estate tycoon. The real estate tycoon, who was in the past an ardent supporter of the supra executive, refused to testify against the PTI chairman, showing defiance.

The PTI, which had lost all hope in the lower or superior judiciary, suddenly found itself on another pedestal, reinvigorating its hopes and inspiration for securing the release of its supreme leader and reactivating the PTI as a party, further strengthening its position on the political chessboard.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s interim bail was extended in the May 9 vandalism case, Asad Umar received an extension on his interim bail in connection with the same incident, and Fawad Chaudhry was released. Hamad Azher, a young intelligent and fiery leader came out of hiding on the instruction of former Chairman PTI to lead the political side of the party, Shibli Faraz, a close associate and trusted friend of Chairman  PTI was reactivated. After going through the worst form of persecution; physical, psychological, emotional, financial and economic, most of the leadership and their supporters have become resilient and are no more afraid of use of kinetic means to harass or intimidate them.

PTI’s active engagement to craft a unified forum to confront the parliament and the executive on the results of the 2024 Election and to reclaim their lost mandate has added another significant dimension to the existing complexity of the political scenario.

With the government in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, the PTI has access to the province’s resources. The leadership, which has been persecuted, will find safe haven in KP province. They will have official resources to amplify their message and to execute political rallies, public meetings, and other agitational maneuvers without the fear of arrest and persecution. Moreover, they can frustrate the federation’s attempts to muzzle the PTI, at least in KP Province.

The defiant, ardent and courageous moves by the PTI is gaining a lot of traction in the traditional and social media both domestic and international. Social media has become a powerful tool for PTI to amplify its narrative and challenge the narrative of its rival. PTI leadership have learned the art and craft to connect with the public, bypassing traditional media filters and presenting their unfiltered narrative.

PTI has been using Social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram are also used from inside and outside the country despite its internet slow down and banning X to mobilize supporters, organize rallies, and create a sense of community among PTI followers, maintaining high levels of enthusiasm and participation.  PTI leverages social media to counter the narratives presented by the army and other political opponents by quickly responding to allegations, sharing alternative viewpoints, and highlighting inconsistencies. Additionally, viral campaigns, including memes, videos, and hashtags, are used to spread the party’s message and dominate online discussions.

The odds are even more complicated on the supra-executive side. In Balochistan and KP, insurgent and anti-federation elements harbor grudges against the army. Many political parties, skeptical of the 2024 election results, are now openly criticizing the supra-executive. The inter-institutional sentiment, particularly after the Bahawalnagar incident, has created tension between the police and the army. Additionally, the repatriation of illegal Afghans and the enforcement of strict border control have led to unusual border tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Social media is filled with criticism of the army, which, despite the inherent strengths of the supra-executive, has posed significant challenges to it.

As the game approaches its final stages, where a winner may emerge or there might be a draw, every move becomes crucial. A draw could benefit both parties but would result in handing over the parliament and the executive to PTI as part of an agreed deal. Those who were in the parliament and executive on the basis of flawed and rigged Form 47, now assume the status of the opposition will play a new round of chess game. featuring PTI and a supra executive on one side, and PML(N), PPP, and MQM on the other. Although this scenario has a slim chance of materializing, in the realms of chess and politics, anything can happen.

Another scenario is more scary where one party wins, and the other refuses to accept defeat. This would lead the country into another prolonged chess game, potentially adding many layers of complexity on political, financial and economic challenges faced by the nation, and yet another round of miseres inflicted on the people of the country.
