T20 World Cup 2024: West Indies claim huge 104-run win over Afghanistan

West Indies claimed a major victory over Afghanistan

Saint Lucia, JUN 18: West Indies claimed a major victory over Afghanistan as they beat their opponents by 104 runs in the final group stage clash of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia on Tuesday.

Afghanistan were handed a massive target of 219 runs, however, they bowled out for 114 in 16.2 overs.

Obed McCoy was the pick of bowlers with figures of 3-14 as the Windies dominated proceedings. Gudakesh Motie and Akeal Hosein clinched two wickets each.

Ibrahim Zadran was the top-scorer for Afghanistan with 38 runs in 28 balls at the top of the order. However, overall, it was a lacklustre batting display by the Rashid Khan-led unit which led to defeat by a huge margin.

Earlier, Afghanistan won the toss and decided to bowl first against the West Indies.

Nicholas Pooran played a sensational knock of 98 runs in 53 balls to help the Windies post a daunting total of 218-5 in 20 overs.

Pooran was unlucky to miss out on a well-deserved ton after he was run out while completing the second run in the final over. He smashed six fours and eight maximums.

Johnson Charles contributed 43 runs in 27 balls with the help of eight fours.

Gulbadin Naib bagged figures of 2-14, while Azmatullah Omarzai and Naveen-ul-Haq claimed one wicket each.

Both teams had already qualified for the Super 8 after winning their first three matches in Group C.

Pacer Romario Shepherd had left the West Indies camp to be present for the birth of his second child ahead of today’s match. He will return to the squad tomorrow. He was replaced by Obed McCoy. Meanwhile, Afghanistan were unchanged.

Teams:

West Indies (Playing XI): Brandon King, Johnson Charles, Nicholas Pooran(w), Shai Hope, Rovman Powell(c), Sherfane Rutherford, Andre Russell, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Gudakesh Motie and Obed McCoy.

Pakistan marks Eid ul Adha under shadow of Gaza war

Pakistan marks Eid ul Adha under shadow of Gaza war

ISLAMABAD, JUN 17: Pakistanis marked the holy festival of Eid ul Adha on Monday under the shadow of the months-long Gaza war, which has claimed the lives of thousands of innocent Palestinians.

At least 37,337 Palestinians have been killed and 85,299 injured in Israel’s military offensive on Gaza since October 7, the Gaza health ministry said, with thousands more dead feared unrecovered under the rubble.

Despite growing international pressure for a ceasefire, an agreement to halt the fighting still appears distant, more than eight months since the war began.

In their Eid messages, Pakistan’s top leadership expressed solidarity with the war-torn nation as well as people in Indian Illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir and sought redressal to their worries.

While Muslims prayed for their brothers and sisters in the Gulf nation, they also sacrificed animals — goats, cows, camels, etc — to commemorate the sacrifice by Prophet Ibrahim (AS).

To ensure that the religious festival witnesses no untoward situation, security has also been tightened across the country, with thousands of police personnel deployed across the country.

‘Look after less fortunate’

In his message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended warm greetings to the Pakistani nation and Muslims around the world on the auspicious occasion of Eid ul Adha.

In a message, he said the festival commemorates the unwavering commitment and readiness of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his beloved son Prophet Ismail (AS) without hesitation, as commanded by Allah.

“The day reminds us of the importance of sacrificing what is most dear to us in the way of Allah. It teaches us the value of selflessness and devotion to Allah.”

The prime minister said the day also serves as an occasion to unite the people and foster the bonds of brotherhood and fraternity as well as to look after the less fortunate amongst us and make them part of our collective celebration.

“Whilst our wish is for peace, prosperity and love to prevail all over the world during Eid ul-Adha, we are also watching with sadness and concern [about] other ongoing conflicts and violence in many countries worldwide. We should not forget the sacrifices and sufferings of the people of Palestine and Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir,” he added.

On this Eid day, he said, “we pray for our Palestinian and Kashmiri brothers and sisters who are bravely facing brutal foreign occupation but remain steadfast in their struggle to achieve their right of self-determination”.

“May the spirit of Eid ul Adha, with its message of solidarity and unity, bring prosperity, success and happiness to the entire Muslim ummah,” he prayed.

‘Key to success’

For his part, President Asif Ali Zardari also extended his warm felicitations to the nation and the Muslim Ummah on the blessed occasion.

In a message, he prayed to Allah to grant His blessings and happiness to the Muslim world and Pakistan on this auspicious day.

When Allah put Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Ismail (AS) through trials, both of them bowed their heads to obtain the pleasure of Allah, he said.

“It is a lesson for us that the key to success is to remain firm in the situation of trials and tests and to obey Allah Almighty.”

President Zardari urged the nation to reaffirm their commitment to the values of brotherhood, sacrifice, and selflessness on this occasion.

He encouraged everyone to share the joy of Eid with those around them, especially those who are unable to celebrate due to financial constraints.

“I prayed to Allah Almighty to shower His blessings and mercy upon the entire Muslim ummah, particularly Pakistan”, he added.

In a separate statement, the Armed Forces of Pakistan, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), and services chiefs extended their warm felicitations to all Pakistanis on the occasion of Eid.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR): “This sacred event embodies the spirit of sacrifice for the greater good. On this auspicious day, we are indebted to our martyrs and ghazis for the independence and peace which prevail in the country, and pay tribute to their ultimate sacrifices.”

It further said: “May Allah Almighty continue to bestow His blessings upon Pakistan and protect it from the nefarious designs of its adversaries, Ameen.”

Islamic Emirate PM urges public support for Islamic system in Eid message

Islamic Emirate PM urges public support for Islamic system in Eid message

KABUL, JUN 16: Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund, the prime minister of the Islamic Emirate, said that the people must firmly support the Islamic system.

In his Eid message, he emphasized the importance of citizens’ cooperation in protecting and strengthening the system.

The Prime Minister also called on interim government officials to spare no effort in assisting the citizens of the country.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, said about Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund’s Eid message: “Public cooperation in support of the system should increase. Whether in the security sector, the economic sector, or in the reconstruction of the country, there should be more coordination.”

A number of political analysts said public support for the current system is crucial, and they believe that the government should also accept the legitimate demands of the people.

“It is possible to gain the support of the people if the mujahideen of the Soviet and American jihad periods are brought into the government. Even those who were at home but are good and righteous people should be brought into the government,” said Sayed Akbar Agha, a political analyst.

“If regimes treat people well, naturally the people will support them, and this is very beneficial for the strengthening of a system,” said Aziz Stanekzai, another political analyst.

Meanwhile, Hamid Karzai, former president, and Abdullah Abdullah, the former chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation, in their separate Eid messages called for the reopening of schools and universities for girls above the sixth grade and added that the development and progress of Afghanistan lies in unity and cooperation.

PAK vs IRE: Pakistan end T20 World Cup campaign with victory against Ireland

PAK vs IRE: Pakistan opt to bowl first in dead-rubber T20 World Cup match

LAUDERHILL, JUN 17: Pakistan ended their T20 World Cup campaign with victory against Ireland in their last match of T20 World Cup 2024, played Sunday at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida.

The Irish struggled during Green Shirts’ run-chase but made inroads by picking up quick wickets later in the innings.

However, Babar Azam and Co chased down the small 107-run target against the opponents, who remained winless at the mega-tournament.

The low-scoring encounter was decided in the second last over with Shaheen Afridi taking Pakistan over the line and helping them end their disappointing T20 World Cup campaign with a six.

Chasing the target, Pakistan, despite a decent start, made things difficult for them as they kept on losing wickets. Saim Ayub (17 off 17), and Mohammad Rizwan (17 off 16) lost their wickets inside the first six overs.

Pakistan’s middle-order failed once again as Fakhar Zaman (5), Usman Khan (2), Shadab Khan (0) and Imad Wasim (4) all failed to score in double digits.

Abbas Afridi gave Pakistan a breakthrough as he hit a six and a four during his 17-run innings which helped Babar Azam’s side come close to the target.

Skipper Babar Azam top-scored for the winning side with 32 runs.

Earlier in the first innings, a dominating display by the Pakistani bowlers ran over the Irish side as Shaheen, Mohammad Amir, and Wasim all starred with the ball.

Shaheen started the innings for Pakistan brilliantly as he removed Andrew Balbirnie and Lorcan Tucker in the first over, leaving Ireland 2-2.

Amir continued what Shaheen started and sent Irish skipper Paul Stirling back to the pavilion for just one run.

Pakistani bowlers continued their dominance and kept sending the opponents’ batters back to the pavilion. It looked like Ireland would be all out before even scoring 60 runs as a team but George Dockrell and Gareth Delany’s 44-run partnership helped them reach a decent total.

Delany top-scored for the struggling Irish side with his quick 19-ball 31 which included four boundaries. Joshua Little’s contributed 22 runs on 18 balls with three boundaries.

Ireland concluded their innings at 106/9 in 20 overs. For Pakistan, Shaheen and Imad bagged three wickets each, Amir got two while Haris Rauf managed to remove one Irish batter.

However, the victory made no difference as it was a dead-rubber match after elimination of both sides.

China views Taiwan’s ‘elimination’ as national cause, President Lai Ching-te says

China views Taiwan’s ‘elimination’ as national cause

Taipei City, JUN 16: China views the annexation and “elimination” of Taiwan as its great national cause, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said on Sunday, telling cadets at the military’s premier academy they must know their enemy and not give in to defeatism.

Lai has faced sustained personal attacks from China, which views Taiwan as its own territory, since assuming office last month, with Beijing calling him a “separatist”. China staged war games around Taiwan shortly after Lai’s inauguration.

Lai says only Taiwan’s people can decide their future and has repeatedly offered talks with Beijing but has been rebuffed.

Speaking in Kaohsiung in the south of the island on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Whampoa Military Academy, Lai said today’s cadets must recognise the challenges of the “new era”.

“The biggest challenge is to face the powerful rise of China, [which is] destroying the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and regards Taiwan’s annexation and the elimination of the Republic of China as the great rejuvenating cause of its people,” he said, using Taiwan’s formal name.

China’s Taiwan Affairs Office did not answer calls on Sunday seeking comments about Lai’s remarks.

Wang Huning, the fourth-ranked leader in China’s ruling Communist Party, told a Saturday forum in China about relations with Taiwan that “reunification is a historical necessity for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation”, vowing to “smash any separatist plots”.

Lai, at the event attended by senior military officials and also the top US diplomat in Kaohsiung Neil Gibson, said the cadets must defend Taiwan against being annexed by China and that the island’s future can only be decided by its people.

“We really must be able to distinguish between ourselves and our enemies and between friend and foe, and absolutely cannot accept the defeatism of ‘the first battle is the last battle’,” Lai said, referring to a theory that Taiwan could collapse as soon as China launched any attack.

The academy was founded in China’s Guangzhou — then known in English as Canton — in 1924, more than a decade after the establishment of the Republic of China, which overthrew the last emperor.

Set up with the help of the Soviet Union to give China a professional military loyal to the nascent state, it moved to Nanjing, Chengdu and finally, Kaohsiung, after the defeated Republican government fled to the island in 1949 at the end of a civil war won by Mao Zedong and his communist forces.

China says any move by Taiwan to declare formal independence would be grounds to attack the island. The government in Taipei says Taiwan is already an independent country, the Republic of China, and that it does not plan to change that.
