DG ISPR Maj-Gen Ahmed Sharif addresses press conference

DG ISPR Maj-Gen Ahmed Sharif addresses press conference

RAWALPINDI, JUL 22: Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General (DG) Maj-Gen Ahmed Sharif is currently addressing a press conference in Rawalpindi.

“The purpose of this press conference is to clarify the army’s stance on some important topics,” he said, adding that there was some “increase in organised propaganda, false, wrong news and concocted news” against the armed forces in recent times.

“That is why it is important to talk on these matters.”

Providing updates on counter-terrorism operations so far in the year, he said 22,409 intelligence-based operations were conducted against terrorists and their facilitators.

He said over 112 operations were being conducted daily by the military and law enforcement agencies against terrorism.

Responding to a question regarding the potential of displacement in key areas as a result of the government’s new planned operation, Azm-i-Istehkam (Resolve for Stability), DG Ahmed said that it was a “comprehensive counter-terrorism campaign” through national consensus and “not a military operation per se as it is being presented”.

He further said: “I will start by saying that our problem is that we are sacrificing even very important issues on the altar of politics and Azm-i-Istehkam is one such example of this.”

DG Ahmed said that a narrative was built to give the impression that the operation was launched to displace people, clarifying that it was only for the purpose of “reinvigorating the already in-place National Action Plan”.

He said kinetic efforts already under way would be “augmented” by law enforcement agencies empowered by effective legislation, as per the original announcement of the operation.

Referring to the original announcement, the DG ISPR questioned where it pointed to previous military operations.

“Our issue is that we make every important issue … a joke because of our politics,” he reiterated.

The DG ISPR said that a “very strong lobby” did not want the objectives of the National Action Plan to be fulfilled “because the stakes are very high”.

“A massive illegal, political mafia rose to sabotage the operation and the first move of that mafia was to make the operations controversial.”

Pointing to the National Action Plan’s 14 points, he said kinetic operations were “under way in a splendid manner” with “four to five operations under way in every hour”.

He said the problem was present in the plan’s other points. DG Ahmed said it was decided in 2014 and 2021 that Counter-Terrorism Departments would be established at the provincial levels and they would be responsible for leading operations against terrorism.

The DG ISPR said the National Action Plan also talked about the regularisation and registration of religious seminaries but only a bit over 16,000 were and thus the status of 50 per cent was unknown.

“Does the army have to do this?” he questioned.

He said if Operation Azm-i-Istehkam was properly acted on, it would not only eliminate terrorism but also lead to societal and national uplift.

Questioned about the weekend’s violence during a peace rally in Bannu and the alleged firing by security forces, DG Ahmed mentioned last week’s terrorist attack on Bannu Cantonment that martyred eight military personnel.

He said the locals had demanded carrying out a peace march the next day and it was agreed that there would be no anti-state slogans carried out. “But when the peace march began, some specific negative elements joined with it,” he added.

He said the rally marched through the point of the terrorist attack and “chanted slogans against the army and the state and pelted stones”, adding that some armed individuals were already part of the march “who [opened] fire because of which there were injuries”.

DG Ahmed said a temporary wall erected was also torn down and the supply depot was looted.

“This is how it happened. The army’s response was as per SOP (standard operating procedure) and as per orders. When the May 9 incident happened, a specific political group, a chaotic crowd, began doing propaganda that why didn’t the army stop them.”

DG Ahmed said the army’s system was “very clear”, adding that if there was a military situation then there “are very clear [directions] and the officers conducted themselves according to it”.

He said if a “chaotic crowd” set upon a military installation then it was first “given a clear warning”, then aerial firing was carried out and “if it still does not stop then it is treated how it should be.”

DG Ahmed said security forces had thus conducted aerial firing as per the above code.“The issue is why this happened. This happened because your legal and judicial system, when it gives leeway to the perpetrators and facilitators of May 9 and doesn’t bring them to justice then discord, mob mentality and fascism will further increase in the country.”

The DG ISPR said riot control and law and order were the province government’s responsibility and not the military’s. “Miscreants join a crowd and open fire and kill people, so this responsibility is of the provincial government and administration. So it does not make sense that what protest is one political party carrying out against its own provincial government?”

DG Ahmed said protests should definitely take place and the nation had a right to express its anger at terrorist incidents. Questioned about an alleged audio leak of Mufti Noor Wali Mehsud, chief of the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan group, the DG ISPR questioned what brand of Islam the militant was preaching that talking about blowing up schools, colleges, hospitals and homes.

“This will be taken to its logical end,” he said, adding that such things “only strengthen our resolve that Azm-i-Istehkam is highly necessary”. Questioned about the recent sit-in by the Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan, he said the issue at its core was about Palestine. “This is a very important and sensitive issue. It should be clear that the state and army have a clear stance on the issue of Palestine: it is genocide and unacceptable.”

He said Pakistan had sent over 1,100 tonnes of aid to Palestine.

Court approves Imran, Bushra’s 7-day physical remand in Toshakhana case

Court approves Imran, Bushra's 7-day physical remand in Toshakhana case

RAWALPINDI: An accountability court has approved a seven-day remand of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in the newly filed Toshakhana reference.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had sought a 14-day remand of the couple, but the court turned down the request and asked the anti-graft body to produce the suspects on July 29.

The anti-corruption body’s team had presented the couple before the court after the expiry of their previous eight-day remand and also submitted a progress report to the judge.

The 71-year-old cricketer-turned-politician has been in prison for almost a year now in three cases — the Toshakhana case, cipher case, and the un-Islamic marriage case. His wife, Bushra Bibi, has also been behind bars for months.

However, a court suspended his sentence in the Toshakhana case, while other courts overturned his convictions in the cipher and iddat cases, respectively.

While there were hopes for his and Bushra’s release in July, they were dashed when NAB arrested them on fresh charges related to the sale of state gifts.

PML-N has ‘non-serious and incompetent’ people, says Kirmani after quitting party

PML-N has 'non-serious and incompetent' people, says Kirmani after quitting party

LAHORE, JUL 21: Dr Syed Asif Kirmani, the former political secretary of ex-prime minister Nawaz Sharif, voicing strong opinion about the current state of the party, has said that members of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) have infiltrated the ranks of the N-League, adding that these individuals “do not represent the true face of the PML-N”.

Kirmani, in a surprise statement on Saturday, announced quitting the PML-N, criticising the top leadership of the ruling party. He said he had already distanced himself from the political affairs of the Nawaz-led party for a long time.

The former N-League veteran quit the party over differences with the top party leadership’s decision to form a government following the February 8 general election despite rigging allegations.

Sharing his insights in an interview with Geo News on Sunday, he expressed concerns about the calibre of current party members holding key positions, also describing them as “non-serious and incompetent”.

“It seems Nawaz Sharif has been rendered helpless,” the former politico claimed. “This is not the same Nawaz Sharif I once knew.”

Despite his departure, the PML-N’s deserter stressed he still maintains his respect for Nawaz, saying: “I respected Nawaz Sharif in the past, and I respect him now as well.”

The former PML-N leader said he gave almost 19 to 20 years to the party and remained a close associate of Nawaz, adding that they have left a “loyal companion behind”.

Reflecting on his decision to part ways with the party, he admitted: “It was painful leaving my home.” He also called on the PML-N supremo to engage with the general public to have an idea of what they are going through. “Mian Sahib, everything is not alright. Come out, [mingle with people] and see for yourself.”

Responding to a query about his future political plans, Dr Kirmani insisted that he was not joining any political party, adding he was a “born PML-N supporter” and wished to die as a member of the PML-N family”.

Kirmani was appointed by then-prime minister Nawaz as his political secretary during his rule in 2013. Being a close aide of the three-time PM, he played an active role during the PML-N’s election campaign before the party rose to power in 2013.

Moreover, Abbas Khan Afridi also called it quits last month, claiming that the party’s president Nawaz was “no longer relevant in the country’s politics”.

Similarly, senior PML-N leader and former Sindh governor Muhammad Zubair, ex-prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and former finance minister Miftah Ismail had left the ruling party in recent months.

Abbasi and Ismail had launched a new political party, Awaam Pakistan, earlier this month which was joined by several former PML-N leaders including Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan Abbasi, Javed Abbasi, Syed Zaeem Hussain Qadri, Rana Zahid Tauseef, Zahid Binnouri, and Sardar Anwar Soomro.

Mohammed Shami breaks silence on rumours about marriage with Sania Mirza

Mohammed Shami breaks silence on rumours about marriage with Sania Mirza

New Delhi, JUL 21: Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has finally opened up about the news reports pertaining to his marriage with tennis star Sania Mirza.

Soon after some media outlets reported about their marriage, different posts with doctored images of the sports personalities’ marriage popped up on social media last month.

The reports have already altogether been ruled out by Sania’s father, saying they never even came across once, let alone married. “This is all rubbish. She has not even met him,” Imran Mirza had told media on June 21.

Various Indian websites including Masala, Times Now, and Zoom had reported that Sania and Shami were set to get married on August 20, 2024.

After remaining mum over the rumour for about a month, Shami said it was strange to open the phone and see his own picture with someone.

“I believe that memes are meant for fun, but if it is related to someone’s life, then one should make memes with a lot of consideration. People share such news from unverified pages and get away,” he said in response to a query about rumours regarding the two athletes tying the knot.

In an interview with a YouTuber, the pacer said it was weird and done advertently for some lame fun.

The Indian cricketer warned those spreading fake news, saying: “If you have the guts, then speak from the verified pages, then I will tell you.”

He said it was very easy to pull someone’s leg. “You first work hard, achieve success, raise your level and help someone only then I will believe you are a good person,” he remarked.

Shami urged people to be responsible on social media and refrain from disseminating such unwarranted news.

Competition tribunal affirms penalty

ISLAMABAD, JUL 21 (DNA) —Competition Appellate Tribunal has upheld the decision of the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) against M/s Reliance Paints Pakistan for fixing the retail prices of its products, in violation of Section 4 of the Competition Act, 2010.

The CCP initiated an inquiry after receiving a formal complaint from Akzo Nobel Pakistan Ltd, which alleged that Reliance Paint was fixing the minimum resale price for its products and also monitoring and penalizing the dealers/distributors/retailers for non-compliance with its price directives, said a press release issued here on Sunday.

CCP’s enquiry report concluded that these practices were restricting competition not only between the dealers and retailers but also between Reliance and its competitors as the retail price became inflexible and no discounts could be offered by dealers to consumers for Reliance’s products.

Commission observed that the agreements/arrangements enforced by Reliance Paints restricted intra-brand competition amongst its dealers or distributors/retailers as the same impairs their ability to compete on prices in the sale and distribution of Reliance Paint’s products. Consequently, the CCP imposed a penalty of PKR 5 million on Reliance Paints.

Reliance Paints filed an appeal against the CCP’s order with the Competition Appellate Tribunal. The Tribunal upheld findings of the Commission regarding Reliance Paint’s violations of Section 4 of the Act. However, it reduced the penalty to PKR 2.5 million. — DNA

All three of them are considered important pillars of the Pakistan cricket team and the PCB made the decision to give them rest as the Green Shirts have to play a lot of cricket before the commencement of Champions Trophy 2025, which will be hosted in the country.

Pakistan’s schedule till May 2025 is jam-packed due to which the PCB denied the NOCs to players. The main priority for the Mohsin Naqvi-led board is the players’ fitness and making sure they remain injury-free and are well-rested.

The cricket body added that the three all-format players and their services are expected to be required in the upcoming eight months during which Pakistan will play nine Tests, 14 ODIs, and nine T20Is

“In line with the PCB’s workload management policy, it is in the best interest of Pakistan cricket and the players that they skip the upcoming event in Canada so that they are in their best mental and physical shape for the season, which commences with the two-Test series against Bangladesh,” the statement added.

It is worth mentioning that the PCB’s policy is to allow players to play two franchise cricket leagues alongside the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
