ICC World Cup 2023 Final: Australia Outplays India in Stunning Win

ICC World Cup 2023 Final: Australia Outplays India in Stunning Win

Ahmedabad, NOV 19: Australia won the ICC World Cup 2023 after beating India by six wickets in a one-sided manner at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on Sunday.

The mighty Aussies clinched their record-extending sixth World Cup, at-least four more than West Indies and India who have two titles each in their trophy cabinet.

Travis Head starred for the winning side by scoring a remarkable century as the left-handed batter stood tall despite his side losing three early wickets.

Head trashed Indian bowlers on all parts of the ground and scored 137 runs on 120 balls with 15 fours and four sixes, showing no mercy on their opposition.

Head was greatly supported by a calm and composed Marnus Labuschagne as the right-hander started his innings slowly and played while rotating the strike, providing Head the room to find the moments and hit boundaries.

The two batters built a formidable 192-run partnership which guided Australia to yet another title triumph.

Batting first, India didn’t get an ideal start as Mitchell Starc gave them a big blow in the fifth over by removing star opener Shubman Gill for just four runs. The right-handed batter was caught at mid-on by Adam Zampa.

However, that blow couldn’t stop Rohit from playing his natural game in the powerplay as the 36-year-old continued with his berserk display and scored crucial runs.

However, in the 10th over, Sharma, once again, missed out on his well-deserved half-century by becoming the victim of Glenn Maxwell as Travis Head took an absolute blinder to make sure that The Hitman no longer stays on the pitch.

Shreyas Iyer followed Sharma soon after losing his wicket to Pat Cummins for just four runs leaving India 81-3 in just 10.2 overs.

However, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli built a 67-run partnership and looked all set to score big. But the latter became Cummins’ victim just after completing his half-centuries as he misjudged a short ball.

Rahul continued to play but he didn’t have much support from the other hand as all the other Indian batters kept on losing wickets at intervals and the team was soon all-out for just 240 runs in 50 overs.

Six Indian players failed to score in double digits, which probably became the reason of their first and the most-costly defeat in the World Cup.

Govt praised for establishing the Industrial Advisory Council

Govt praised for establishing the Industrial Advisory Council

ISLAMABAD, NOV 19 (DNA) – FPCCI’s presidential candidate, Atif Ikram Sheikh, lauded the government for setting up the Industrial Advisory Council and assured the full cooperation of the business community.

Headed by the Federal Minister of Industry and Production, Gohar Ejaz, the council comprises reputable personalities who will advise the government to boost industrial production in the country and tackle issues confronting industrialisation proactively, he said.

Atif Ikram Sheikh, who has also served as VP FPCCI, Chairman PVMA and President ICCI said in a statement issued here today that Muhammad Ali Tibba, Fawad Ahmed Mukhtar, Raza Mansha, Aamir Fayyaz Sheikh, Waqar Ahmed Malik, Abdul Samad Dawood, Shehbaz Yasin Malik, Shahzad Asghar Ali, Syed Haider Ali, Farooq Naseem, Ahsan Bashir and Sameer Chinoy have been included in the council.

Moreover, the council members include all the provincial chief secretaries, including the chief secretaries of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, the finance secretary, the commerce secretary, the industry and production secretary and the chairman of FBR.

He said the council would meet every week and submit a report in 10 weeks, adding that the business community is pinning high hopes on them.

The business leader said that the industry is a struggling sector in Pakistan that needs the attention of policymakers as it can resolve the issue of employment, borrowing and forex earnings.

He informed that Pakistan’s exports were $25 billion in 2013. These are around $30 billion in 2023. Imports were $ 43 billion in 2013 against $ 70 billion in 2023.

If the exports and imports had kept the same pace, the trade deficit would have been around $13 to $15 billion annually.

Due to almost stagnant exports, they ranged between $ 18 and $ 25 billion. Thus, if the exports had kept pace with the import increase, the foreign loans of Pakistan would have been $80 billion to $100 billion less with a foreign exchange rate of around Rs 100 to 120 per dollar.

In comparison, Bangladesh exported $45 billion worth of clothing in 2022. This South Asian country’s was around $25 billion in 2013. India’s annual textile exports stood at $44.4 billion in FY2022. In 2013, they were around USD 24 billion.

If we had followed in the footsteps of our South Asian neighbours, our exports would have been around $45 billion.

Australia win toss, choose to bowl in World Cup final against India

Australia win toss

Australia’s captain Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to bowl in the final clash of the ICC World Cup 2023 against India at Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.

Both teams remain unchanged for the clash at the world’s biggest cricket stadium where Australia, playing in an eighth final, look for a sixth title.

India won the World Cup in 1983 and then again on home soil in 2011.

Rohit Sharma’s India have won all their 10 matches at the tournament and retain the winning XI from their 70-run semi-final win over New Zealand in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Rohit said he would have opted to bat first had he won the toss.

“I’d have batted first, it looks a good pitch, it’s a big game, let’s put runs on the board,” said Rohit as the crowd roared.

“It’s going to be amazing. The biggest occasion in terms of cricket events. We have to stay calm and get the job done.”

The hosts are looking to end a global title drought since their Champions Trophy win in 2013.

Red-hot Virat Kohli leads the tournament batting chart with 711 runs after he smashed a record 50th ODI century in the semis to surpass compatriot Sachin Tendulkar’s 49 tons.

Fast bowler Mohammed Shami tops the bowling list with 23 wickets in six matches.

Cummins announced the same team which won a nervy semi-final against South Africa by three wickets in Kolkata on Thursday.

In the group stage, they lost to India in their opener by six wickets and to South Africa by 134 runs before putting together an eight-game winning streak.

“Looks like a bit of a dry wicket and we wanted to bowl first. Dew is one factor and it’s quite dewy in the night at this venue,” said Cummins.

“Been really proud of the group. Tough start to the tournament but they haven’t put a foot wrong since.”

Australia hammered India in the 2003 World Cup final in Johannesburg.

Teams

India: Rohit Sharma (capt), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wkt), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj

Rational, Humanitarian approach and global responsibility needed to resolve middle east conflict

Humanitarian approach

ISLAMABAD, /DNA/ – The conflict in the Middle East has exposed the hypocrisy and moral corrosion of countries fuelled by transactional and self-serving interests – this notion was echoed at the roundtable on Middle East Conflict – Evolving Geopolitical Dynamics, organized by the Center for Research and Security Studies (CRSS). Participating diplomats, scholars, and policy and civil-military expertscritically evaluated the response of the Arab and Muslim world, economic and regional security implications of the conflict, the role of the United States and China, and prospects for conflict-resolution.

Former Ambassador Tasneem Aslamunderscored that the current turmoil in Gaza is not something that occurred overnight, but, in fact, the consequence of “persistent humiliation, dehumanization, and marginalization of the Palestinians”. This war – aimed at the systematic elimination of Palestinians from their homeland – will only lead to greater instability in the Middle East, while severely impacting countries like Egypt, and others too.

Highlighting a turning point in the history of global politics, the seasoned envoy added, “This conflict has shaken the conscience of people around the world. Now it is not just Arabs and Muslims vs Israelis and Jews. This war resonates with the African Americans, Latinos, the enlightened generation of Jewsliving abroad, and all those groups who have faced decades-long persecution and injustice.”

Recognizing the broader geopolitical dynamics at play, former ambassador Riffat Masood added, “The world must look at and understand this conflict in the context of Iran-US rivalry. Their historical role necessitates their inclusion and active role in the discourse for the peaceful resolution of this conflict.

Masood noted that a gradual shift in Arab nations’ ties toward Israel, and the involvement of Russia and China in the Middle East– subsequently threatening the US’ sway in the region – has played a key role in exacerbating the conflict.

Modern democracies around the world, particularly in the West, should not associate themselves with expansionist and colonizing powers. “This is a decisive moment for them – history will remember if they align with the might or logic and humanitarianism”, she concluded.

Former ambassador Shahzad Choudhry emphasized the need for a two-state solution to prevent the deterioration of the humanitarian crisis and ensure long-lasting peace. He said, “Key figures, including Biden, Netanyahu, and the Palestinian leadership could pave the way for peace through such an agreement. In that manner, we will have peace handed over to the world by a small but group of powerful and rational leaders”. “To materialize such a solution, world leaders must believe in peace and play a much-needed role in putting an end to this conflict rather than justifying the loss of innocent lives.”, he proposed.

Dr. Zafar Nawaz Jaspal, Professor at the School of Politics and International Relations, Quaid-i-Azam University said that the massive public support for Palestinians witnessed in the West following the latest conflict in the Middle East, indicates how public opinion – believed to be one of the core determinants of foreign policy decisions – has failed to influence the Western, democratically-electedgovernments.

He applauded China’s role as a global harbinger of peace given how it envisions a two-state solution as the only viable option to resolve the Palestine-Israel issue.

Haroon Sharif, former minister of state and chairman of Pakistan’s Board of Investment, opined that the self-serving economic and political interests have blinded the conscience of the countries including the ones most proximate to the conflict. These short-term transactional commercial interests have triumphed over the morality and rationality of the leadership of most of them to adopt a unified stance.

Lt. Gen (R) Asif Yaseen Malikcriticized the role of peace bodies in resolving the conflict for their casual approach and lack of strategic foresight and that Palestine holds minimal significance on their agenda. He also underscored the detrimental impact of internal divisions among Muslim and Arab nations, questioning the immediate stakeholders’ demonstration of minimal concern on the issue.

Dr. Muhammad Ali Ehsan, a postdoctoral scholar at the International Affairs Department of Kazan Federal University, Russia, highlighted that Pakistan’s unclear stance on the current turmoil stems back to a broader flaw: lack of expertise on the Middle East. He urged the concerned actors to invest in scholars, teachers, and experts at the formal education as well as foreign policy levels. Only through on-ground and critical academic intervention, we can organically understand and help address the complexities of such crises”, he concluded.

Former ambassador Qazi Humayun moderated the discussion and emphasized how the Middle East Crisis has sent shockwaves all over the world. Whether this was created by Israel to wipe off Hamas or it was something intrinsic, innocent Palestinians are paying a very big price. The response from the Arab League and OICshould have been more proactive and resolute in the interest of conflict-resolution.

The forum collectively underpinned that countries like the United States and China have a key role to play in addressing this conflict and they must encourage both parties to extend an olive branch.  Shedding light on the current stance of the Biden administration and inclination towards Israel, they echoed that this has only harmed the US and EU’s global stature due to exclusionary foreign policy decisions. Such strong opposition to the US policyis being witnessed after a very long time. The same is the case with the EU. There is a lot of public pressure. Besides, the parliaments, congress, and senates are divided on the issue, calling for an immediate ceasefire.
