Phillips, Mitchell help New Zealand take 4-0 lead in T20I series against Pakistan

New Zealand

Christchurch: Glenn Phillips and Daryl Mitchell scored fifties as New Zealand beat Pakistan in the fourth T20I by seven wickets on Friday in Christchurch.

New Zealand had slipped to 20-3 in third over of the run-chase but Phillips and Mitchell stitched a match-winning partnership of 139 runs in 93 balls to get their side over the line with 11 balls to spare.

Mitchell scored 72 runs in 44 balls, meanwhile Phillips notched up 70 in 52.

All three wickets to fall in New Zealand’s inning were claimed by Pakistan captain Shaheen Afridi.

Earlier, Mohammad Rizwan scored unbeaten 90 runs as Pakistan set New Zealand a target of 159 runs in the fourth T20I of the series.

Rizwan scored 90 runs in 63 balls with the help of six fours and two sixes.

Mohammad Nawaz scored quick-fire 21 runs in nine balls, which included three consecutive sixes off pacer Adam Milne in the penultimate over of the innings.

“Conway has been in isolation at the team’s Christchurch hotel after testing positive yesterday,” New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said in a statement.

Muslim activism in US gaining strength in the wake of Gaza conflict

Muslim activism in US gaining strength in the wake of Gaza conflict

DNA
ISLAMABAD, 19 Jan: There has been a remarkable upsurge in activism among the Muslim population in the US following the Israeli aggression against Gaza, specifically in efforts to raise awareness and support for the Palestinian cause. The conflict has ignited a strong sense of urgency and unity among the Muslims, and, as a result, their voices are increasingly being heard, which has strengthened the community. This is also evident in the display of solidarity of the general American public towards Muslims in support of this cause.

This emerged during a discussion titled ‘Gaza, Emerging World Order, and American Politics’ by Dr Zahid Bukhari, Pakistani American political analyst and former director, American Muslim Studies Program at Georgetown University, Washington D.C. The session held was hosted by the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS), and also joined by Khalid Rahman, chairman IPS, Ambassador (r) Syed Abrar Hussain, vice chairman IPS, and Dr Fakhr-ul-Islam, Advisor, Research & Academic Outreach IPS.

Dr Bukhari observed that the rise in activism is a continuation of the American-Muslim community’s efforts to put across their point of view in the years following the 9/11 events. However, what is striking is that the current movement is not confined solely to the Muslim population; it has garnered widespread support from the American public, who are increasingly aligning themselves with the cause of Gaza.

He said that while the older generation, particularly those who affiliate with the Republican Party, may lean towards supporting Israel, there has been a noticeable shift in opinion among the younger generation, including some Democrats, whose perceptions about the Palestine issue have changed.

Moreover, the media is showing perceptible switches in its stance regarding Muslims and the Israel-Palestine issue. In this regard, Dr Bukhari elaborated on the shifting perspective of certain media organizations that have subtly altered their coverage to include the Palestinian narrative, something unthinkable sometime back.

Dr Bukhari said this change is not only occurring in the media landscape but also in the state of the world order, which is undergoing substantial transformations. He emphasized the prevalent belief that, despite America’s considerable soft power, there is a perceived decline in its influence through hard power. Although the US retains its status as a superpower, it is vital to acknowledge the emergence of other influential nations. Consequently, there is a growing debate about whether America’s dominant role will persist or be overtaken by another country. He pointed out that China and other nations are steadily gaining strength and influence and are emerging as potential competitors.

Dr Bukhari said these changing power dynamics, combined with the ongoing clash of opinions between the American general population and the government, have the significant potential to impact the US sociopolitical conditions. He added that this poses a daunting challenge for the US government to navigate the changing environment.

Supporting Dr Bukhari’s observations, Khalid Rahman emphasized that despite the perception of America’s diminishing influence, it still has a considerable role in shaping global public opinion. He noted that while there is a shift in power dynamics, the period of transition is gradual, which is a crucial factor to consider in understanding the complex interplay of forces impacting the world order.

Palestine, Chile, and Mexico Unite to Push for Justice at the ICC

Palestine

RAMALLAH, JAN 19 /DNA/ – The State of Palestine welcomes the referral to the International Criminal Court on the Situation in the State of Palestine by Chile and Mexico. The referral confirms the urgent need for the Court to fulfil its mandate, to deter, investigate, and prosecute the most serious crimes of concern for the international community.

The referral by Chile and Mexico comes two months after South Africa, Djibouti, Bangladesh, Cameron, and Bolivia referred the situation in the State of Palestine to the Court over genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity committed by Israeli officials. Since then, Israel has killed over 13,000 Palestinians, including over 5,000 children while consolidating its use of starvation as a method of war as its officials felt emboldened to publicly state their intent to destroy the Palestinian people.

Israeli officials are not deterred as they continue with their genocidal war. The State of Palestine joins Chile and Mexico in reminding the Prosecutor of his duties to establish the truth, ensure effective investigation, pursue criminal responsibility, and issue arrest warrants. The Court must fulfil its mandate towards Palestinian victims and ensure justice for crimes committed by Israeli officials, without fear or favor.

US closely watching Pakistan-Iran situation; in touch with Pakistani officials

Pakistan

WASHINGTON, Jan 19 (APP/DNA): The United States is monitoring the situation between Pakistan and Iran “very, very closely”, while urging the two countries to avoid escalating tensions, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said Thursday.

“These are two well-armed nations and again we don’t want to see an escalation,” Kirby told reporters traveling with President Joe Biden aboard Air Force One. he added, “We don’t want to see an escalation, clearly, in South and Central Asia. And we’re in touch with our Pakistani counterparts, as you might expect.”

Pakistan launched missile strikes into Iran on Wednesday, after Iran carried out strikes in Pakistan late on Tuesday. A foreign office spokesperson said Pakistani precision strikes had hit “terrorist hideouts” in Iran’s south-eastern Sistan-Baluchestan province.

Questioned about US concerns over the exchange of fire between Iran and Pakistan, Kirby said, “I want to let Pakistan speak to their military operations. I want to be careful about that. As you know, they were struck first by Iran, which was obviously — another reckless attack, another example of Iran’s destabilizing behavior in the region.”

Kirby said he was “not aware” whether Washington had any pre-notification about Pakistan’s retaliatory attack.

At the US State Department news briefing on Thursday, Spokesman Matthew Miller also said that tensions between Pakistan and Iran should not escalate in “any way, shape, or form.”

“Pakistan is a major non-NATO ally of the United States. That will remain the case, but we would urge restraint in this case,” Miller said in response to a question.

Miller said Iranian and Pakistani tensions are not connected to the conflict in Gaza, but given the tensions in the region there’s risk for increased conflict.

“We’ve been incredibly concerned about the potential for escalation since October 7th, and that’s why we have engaged in intense diplomatic efforts to try to prevent escalation,” Miller said.

” So, I will say we noted the comments from the Government of Pakistan about the importance of cooperative relations between Pakistan and its neighbours. We thought those were productive, useful statements. And certainly, there’s no need for escalation, and we would urge restraint on all sides in this case.”
