LCCI President Kashif Anwar, Senior Vice President Zafar Mahmood Chaudhry also spoke on the occasion. Executive Committee Members Raja Hassan Akhter, Mian Attiq ur Rehman, Ahmed Elahi and Mohammad Tauqeer Malik were also present.

The Ambassador said that the bilateral figures of trade between Pakistan and Bulgaria need to be improved. She said that new trends are also being observed in trade between both countries as Bulgaria is exporting wheat and importing mainly textile items from Pakistan as this is the case of whole of the European Union.

She also gave in depth information about Bulgaria which has been an EU member since 2007. She said that Bulgaria offers a favorable taxation system for the investors and with strong traditions, it provides access to all EU markets with 1.3 billion customers.

She said that as a member of the EU, Bulgaria is also part of GSP Plus arrangements. She said that she will also share the information with the Lahore Chamber regarding international exhibitions in Bulgaria during this year.

LCCI President Kashif Anwar said that Pakistan and Bulgaria enjoy cordial diplomatic, political and economic relations. Bulgaria has been giving continued support to Pakistan for the GSP Plus status which played a very important role in enhancing Pakistan’s exports to the European Union (EU).

He said that Bulgaria is an important economy. Its strategic location serves as a gateway for Pakistani products to enter the European Union (EU) market. He said that strengthening trade ties with Bulgaria opens up avenues for Pakistani exporters to expand their reach into the EU market.

The LCCI President said it is important to recognize the immense opportunities that lie ahead in enhancing trade and economic relations between our two countries. We need to make some concerted efforts to boost the bilateral trade to at least One billion dollars in the near future.

Kashif Anwar said that the volume of Bulgaria’s total global trade is around 108 billion dollars whereas Pakistan’s share in it is merely 80 million dollars. He hoped that the Ambassador would apprise the investors from Bulgaria about these investment opportunities in Pakistan under SIFC. The government of Punjab is making an all-out effort to improve business climate in the province by facilitating international and national investors through one window operations in the Business Facilitation Centres.

Kashif Anwar said that there is a great need to connect the private sectors of both countries for exploiting the potential opportunities. It can be done through exchange of export-oriented delegations and participation in trade fairs and exhibitions.

PSL 9: Can Lahore Qalandars still qualify for playoffs?

PSL 9: Can Lahore Qalandars still qualify for playoffs?

Lahore: Defending champions Lahore Qalandars have had a torrid run during the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season nine after losing all of their five matches so far.

The two-time champions are currently at the bottom of the points table with their next match set to take place tomorrow in Lahore against league leaders Multan Sultans.

In order to stay in the hunt for the playoffs, Lahore need to win all of their remaining five matches and reach 10 points.

Over the recent years in PSL, 10 has generally been the minimum number of points needed to qualify for the playoffs.

Peshawar Zalmi in 2023, Karachi Kings in 2021 and 2019 and Quetta Gladiators in 2018 all qualified for the playoffs with 10 points — which was the least among the four teams which made it through to the next round.

Islamabad United qualified for the playoffs in 2022 with eight points and Peshawar Zalmi in 2020 with nine points.

So, all hope is not lost, yet, for Lahore Qalandars if we look at the PSL results from the previous years.

High FED on cigarettes demonstrates positive impact

High FED rates on cigarettes: a win-win for revenue and public health

ISLAMABAD, FEB 25 (DNA): The government’s decision to raise the Federal Excise Duty (FED) on cigarettes has yielded a notable increase in revenue while simultaneously contributing to a reduction in cigarette consumption.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Yearbook 2022-23 substantiated the noteworthy development, according to which the share of cigarettes in the overall Federal Excise Duty (FED) collection has escalated to 40 percent.

The report said that the share of the top ten sectors is about 94 percent and cigarette stood at top of the list followed by cement with 18.7 percent and concentrates 9.6 percent share.

This upswing is chiefly attributed to the imposition of higher FED rates on cigarettes. The fiscal year 2022-23 saw three significant upward revisions, ending a three-year stagnation period.

“One of the major sectors which contributed to FED revenues included cigarettes due to both inflation and increase in excise duty rates,” the FBR Yearbook said.

As cigarette consumption diminishes, the consequential reduction in health-related issues could result in a positive impact on healthcare expenditures, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable society.

The decrease in tobacco usage also aligns with the broader public health objective.

A study by the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) brings attention to the significant economic impact of the use of tobacco, according to which costs linked to diseases and deaths resulting from smoking in 2019 reached a staggering Rs 615.07 billion ($3.85 billion), equivalent to 1.6 percent of the GDP.

Commenting on the development, Malik Imran Ahmed, Country Director, Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids (CTFK) said that the tobacco industry had expressed discontent over the increase of FED claiming it would result in the shutdown.

However, the FBR’s data has challenged the industry’s assertion showing a significant 40 percent share of the FED.

Independent experts have emphatically called upon the FBR to implement World Bank’s recommendation advising increase in FED on cigarettes, in a recent report Pakistan Development Update (PDU).

“A substantial revenue gain of 0.4 percent of GDP could be achieved if the current rate on premium cigarettes (PKR 16.50 per cigarette) was also applied to standard cigarettes,” the report said.

The guidelines of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) also emphasize the pivotal role of taxation as a primary tool in mitigating tobacco consumption.
