Uzbekistan’s first green building forum sets stage for sustainable urban growth and environmental resilience

Uzbekistan

TASHKENT, NOV 8: Leaders, experts, and advocates convened in Tashkent on Wednesday for Uzbekistan’s first Green Building Forum, an important moment in the nation’s pursuit of sustainable urban growth and environmental resilience. The forum gathered key stakeholders from government, the private sector, academia, and civil society to discuss and shape the future of green building in Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan stands at a crossroads in its development, experiencing rapid urbanization and bearing the responsibility to build a future aligned with global environmental goals. By embracing green building practices, the country aims to reduce energy costs, improve air quality, and enhance the resilience of its infrastructure, crucial factors in a region where seasonal temperature extremes strain energy and water resources.

Green building offers not only environmental benefits but also new economic opportunities. By adopting sustainable construction practices, Uzbekistan can attract increased investment, particularly in sectors like manufacturing, construction, and real estate. Green buildings also unlock access to green finance, fostering innovation and driving growth across the economy.

“Our goal is clear: to support Uzbekistan in creating environmentally responsible green buildings that align with the vision of a modern, resilient, and thriving nation,” said Neil McKain, IFC Regional Manager for Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

The forum marks the beginning of what is anticipated to be an annual event focused on advancing green building and the decarbonization of Uzbekistan’s construction sector. Organized by the Uzbekistan’s Minister of Construction, Housing, and Communal Services and IFC’s Green Building Project, which is financed by the government of Hungary and Facility for Investment Climate Advisory Services (FIAS), the forum aims to help create an enabling environment for developing a green building ecosystem in Uzbekistan. In 2024 alone, IFC invested over $1 billion globally in green building projects, demonstrating its commitment to supporting the growth of certified green buildings.

Mushahid Hussain presents 5-point Action Plan for Palestine, Middle East Peace

Mushahid Hussain

ISLAMABAD, NOV 8 /DNA/ – In his Keynote Address at IPI Conference on Middle East here today, Senator Mushahid Hussain outlined a 5-point Action Plan for Palestine & Peace in Middle East.

He said the first step should be for Arab/OIC Emergency Summit on 11 November to take concrete steps to alleviate the sufferings of the Palestinian people and take the lead by forming an International Leaders Delegation, also comprising leaders from the Global South & Europe, including Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Turkiye, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, Algeria and Brazil, plus PMs of Norway & Ireland (as they have recognised State of Palestine) who should visit Washington immediately to meet President-elect Donald Trump, and urge the new US President to reverse the one-sided American policy of blatantly supporting Israel, have ceasefire immediately, provide humanitarian assistance & take steps for lasting peace through establishment of an independent Palestine State.

Second, given their strong Navies, Turkiye, Pakistan and Indonesia should form a Joint Naval Humanitarian Flotilla for Peace, to help break the Israeli blockade of Gaza after getting authorisation from the UN General Assembly. This will send a powerful and positive message to the oppressed Palestinian people that the Muslim Ummah is not an impotent entity, rather it has the vision and political will to undertake concrete initiatives. Third, recalling the joint initiative of President Erdogan and Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir in 2019 to launch a global Media initiative to promote the perspective of the Muslim Ummah in the ‘battle of ideas and narratives’, Mushahid said ‘now is the right time and opportunity for such an initiative as the Gaza Genocide has demonstrated how biased and one-sided the Western media has been in the current crisis’.

He said journalists, scholars, intellectuals, academics, and think tanks could be powerful instruments in the ‘Battle of Ideas’ crafting and presenting narratives based on truth and facts, while representing the popular aspirations of the Global South in general and Muslim World in particular on such issues as Palestine, Kashmir, Islamophobia, and Rohingya, helping to prepare the ground for an alternative emerging equitable global order. Fourth, OIC immediately establish a Palestine Reconstruction Fund for reconstruction of devastated areas of Gaza as well as Lebanon.

Fifth, establish a Nuremberg-style International War Crimes Tribunal for 2 purposes: a) establish War Reparations Fund for victims of Genocide in Palestine & Lebanon; b) form a global group of eminent jurists, lawyers & jurists to try Israeli political & military leaders for crimes against humanity & all other war crimes committed after 7 October, 2023, including acts of aggression against Palestine, Lebanon, Iran, Iraq & Syria.

Mushahid said ‘OIC has lost credibility with Muslim masses as an organization that is suffering from paralysis, unable to act during crises’, adding ‘Muslim states have affluence without influence’. Finally, Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed appealed to OIC Summit host, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince & Prime Minister Muhammad bin Salman, to take inspiration from his late uncle, King Faisal Shaheed, and follow in his footsteps, as King Faisal, during the October 1973 Arab-Israeli War imposed an oil embargo on the US and other supporters of Israel and then King Faisal also took the initiative alongside Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto to convene a special OIC Summit in Lahore in 1974, which for the first time recognised PLO under Yasser Arafat as the ‘sole legitimate representative of the people of Palestine’. Mushahid praised King Faisal Shaheed as a ‘great leader of the Muslim World, who was bold, courageous with vision & will to act for Palestine’.

Suffering in Gaza ‘almost unparalleled’

Gaza

LONDON: Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are experiencing “almost unparalleled” suffering, one of the world’s foremost humanitarian officials has warned following a visit to the enclave.

Jan Egeland, secretary-general of the Norwegian Refugee Council, traveled to Gaza this week, reporting that families, widows and children have been pushed “beyond breaking point” by Israel’s year-long war.

He witnessed “scene after scene of absolute despair” as Palestinian families had been torn apart by attacks, with survivors unable to bury their dead relatives.

Gaza has been rendered “uninhabitable” as a result of Israel’s policies, supported by Western-supplied weaponry, Egeland said.

“This is in no way a lawful response, a targeted operation of ‘self-defence’ to dismantle armed groups, or warfare consistent with humanitarian law,” he added.

“The families, widows and children I have spoken to are enduring suffering almost unparalleled to anywhere in recent history. There is no possible justification for continued war and destruction.”

Since last year, families across the enclave have been repeatedly forced to move from one area to another as a result of Israeli evacuation orders, which now cover 80 percent of Gaza.

The situation is even more dire in northern Gaza, where a month-long Israeli offensive and siege have cut off an estimated 100,000 people from humanitarian aid.

An Israeli brigadier general said this week that there is no intention of allowing the return of Palestinians to their homes in northern Gaza.

Such a policy of forcible transfer would amount to war crimes, humanitarian law experts have said.

As aid continues to be cut off from the Palestinian population, the UN has condemned “unlawful interference with humanitarian assistance and orders that are leading to forced displacement.”

Egeland warned of the “catastrophic impact of strangled aid flows” on the Palestinian population, with people left unable to access food or water for days at a time.

The former Norwegian foreign minister and diplomat said: “There has not been a single week since the start of this war when sufficient aid was delivered in Gaza.”

Despite the acute shortage of humanitarian aid, Israel’s parliament this week passed bills banning the UN Relief & Works Agency from operating in the Occupied Territories, designating it as a terrorist organization.

Egeland called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to prevent the “deadly” situation from worsening, adding: “Those in power on all sides act with impunity, while millions across Gaza and the region pay a terrible price.

“Humanitarians can speak out on what we are seeing, but only those in power can end this nightmare.”

Fourth Anniversary of the Great Victory

Azerbaijan

November 8 – Victory Day of Azerbaijan holds exceptional importance for the honor and future development of the nation of Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan, since the first years of independence, while being subjected to the policy of military aggression, occupation, ethnic cleansing, and genocide by the neighboring country Armenia, and encountering the challenge of almost one million Azerbaijani refugees and internally displaced persons, has always stated that it would never tolerate the fact of occupation despite the commitment to the peace process.

On 27 September 2020, Armenia’s military fired on the civilian population of Azerbaijan and positions of Azerbaijan’s Armed Forces from several directions using various types of weaponry, including heavy artillery. In response to yet another military provocation by Armenia, Azerbaijan launched a counter-offensive on 27 September 2020 to punish the aggressor and put an end to the occupation. That was the Patriotic War for the nation of Azerbaijan.

As a result of President Ilham Aliyev’s visionary and resolute policy, Azerbaijan achieved to ensure the norms and principles of international law, including its territorial integrity, sovereignty, and inviolability of borders, thus implementing 4 resolutions of the UN Security Council that had remained unimplemented for decades, and return its IDPs to their native lands and restore justice.

On September 19-20, 2023, in order to put an end to the existence of illegal Armenian forces, as well as to restore full sovereignty over all its territories, Azerbaijan carried out counter-terrorism measures within 24 hours in the Garabagh region. Currently, after the existence of the remained Armenian armed forces and the puppet regime created by Armenia in Azerbaijan`s territories were brought to an end, there are ample opportunities for peace and stability in the region. Azerbaijan calls on Armenia to demonstrate a constructive and just position in the peace process and to understand the realities in the region properly.

It must be noted that Pakistan was one of several countries, which always stood side by side with us. During the Second Karabakh War, the Patriotic War, political support, and straightforward statements from high-ranking officials of Pakistan supporting Azerbaijan’s just position gave us additional power and strength. Pakistan is the country, which did not establish diplomatic relations with Armenia because of occupation. Azerbaijan`s straightforward support on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir is Azerbaijan`s commitment to our brotherhood and also Azerbaijan`s respect to international law. United Nations Security Council resolutions clearly indicate how this issue must be resolved.

Being committed to its obligations, Azerbaijan, launching the peace initiative immediately after the end of the war and conflict, began to actively promote the idea of normalization of relations between the two countries and the peace process, taking measures to carry out large-scale restoration and construction work in the liberated territories. The Azerbaijani government approved the Great Return Program, built villages based on the “smart village” and green energy concept to facilitate the relocation of internally displaced persons to their native lands.

Azerbaijan places special emphasis on environmental protection and the mitigation of climate change, undertaking significant efforts to deliver on these goals. A clear example of this is the unanimous decision to have our country host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), considered one of the world’s largest and most prestigious events. As noted by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, this is a testament to the international community’s profound respect and trust in Azerbaijan.

Once again, we honor the dearest memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for Azerbaijan`s independence, territorial integrity, and sovereignty with the deepest respect and gratitude!
