PM Shehbaz fails to deliver: Fazlur Rehman

ISLAMABAD, AUG 10: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) Chief, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, has voiced concerns over the current state of Pakistan’s political and economic situation.

During a recent address, he emphasized the need for maintaining stability in the country’s political system, warning against actions that could further harm it.

The JUI chief critiqued Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s efforts to revive the economy, stating that despite his promises, the desired economic uplift has not been achieved.

He noted that while Shehbaz Sharif attempted to secure support from China, the efforts were hindered by the lack of political stability and peace in Pakistan.

“China pointed out the instability and unrest in our country, which affected the success of these negotiations,” said Fazlur Rehman.

He urged the Prime Minister to acknowledge that the visit to China did not yield the expected results and stressed the importance of appearing strong and united during these challenging times to protect the nation.

In addition to economic concerns, Fazlur Rehman questioned the government’s decision to import large quantities of wheat despite having sufficient reserves in the country. He criticised the move, stating that it led to the unsold wheat of Pakistani farmers, causing unnecessary strain on the local agricultural sector.

PM Shehbaz denounces Israeli attack on Gaza school, urges global action

ISLAMABAD, AUG 10: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has strongly condemned the recent Israeli attack on a school in Gaza, describing it as a grave act of aggression and brutality.

In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office Media Wing, he denounced the assault on schoolchildren as an unprecedented act of violence, emphasizing that such barbarism is unparalleled in history.

The premier expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the elevation of the ranks of the martyrs. He also reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people, pledging to continue extending diplomatic and moral support to them at all international forums.

Highlighting the severity of the situation, Shehbaz Sharif called on the international community, including the United Nations, to take decisive and practical steps to end Israeli aggression.

He urged that the Israeli leadership and security forces be held accountable for the genocide and war crimes against Palestinians, calling for the enforcement of the International Court of Justice’s decisions against Israel.

The attack, which occurred during Fajr prayer, targeted a school in the eastern Gaza area where approximately 250 homeless Palestinians had taken refuge.

According to international media reports, Israel fired three missiles at the school, resulting in the martyrdom of over 100 Palestinians and leaving many others injured.

PM Sharif condemned Israel’s actions, stating, “Israel has crossed all boundaries of its brutal acts, and the recent attack on schoolchildren is further proof of its open aggression. The Palestinian genocide must be stopped, and those responsible must be brought to justice.”

Pakistan, he affirmed, will continue to stand in solidarity with its Palestinian brothers and sisters, supporting their cause on every front.

Pak-Afghan Relations: Need for inclusive framework to address trust deficit: Experts

Pak-Afghan Relations: Need for inclusive framework to address trust deficit: Experts

ISLAMABAD, AUG 10 /DNA/ – Upholding the rule of law through a balanced approach by both sides is crucial for restructuring Pak-Afghan relations in the post-August 2021 context, given the internal complexities and external influences shaping their bilateral relationship.

This principle must be bilaterally applied at the policy level, in border management, and throughout all interactions, coupled with mutual recognition of each other’s sovereignty and an understanding of diverse perspectives. Such mutual efforts are crucial for fostering regional stability and building trust.

The views were reflected during a discussion followed by the keynote speech of Ambassador Asif Durrani, Pakistan’s special representative on Afghanistan, in a session titled “Trajectory of Pakistan-Afghanistan Relations: Post-August 2021” organized by the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS), Islamabad, in collaboration with the Institute of Regional Studies (IRS), Peshawar.

The session, chaired by Ambassador (r) Mohammad Sadiq, Pakistan’s former special representative on Afghanistan, was addressed by Khalid Rahman, chairman IPS, Dr Muhammad Iqbal Khalil, chairman IRS, Farhatullah Babar, former senator, Dr. Khuram Iqbal, HoD International Relations, National Defence University, Ambassador (r) Ayaz Wazir, Brigadier (r) Said Nazir, defense analyst, Noorulain Naseem, policy advisor, GIZ Pakistan, and other panelists.

The session emphasized several key perspectives and offered recommendations for fostering a more stable and constructive bilateral relationship.

The gathering underscored the importance of managing bilateral relationships through a pragmatic and deferential approach by both countries, while remaining mindful of the challenges that persist on both sides of the border. This involves mutual recognition of each other’s sovereignty and an understanding of the diverse perspectives. Moving beyond stereotypical views in policymaking, coupled with effective media management, is crucial for reshaping perceptions and fostering a reimagined bilateral relationship at both governmental and public levels.

It was highlighted that Pak-Afghan bilateral policy approaches need to be shifted towards a more inclusive framework. This includes addressing the trust deficit, particularly in areas such as refugee policies, by developing a deeper understanding of the leadership mindsets in both countries and incorporating this understanding into policy formulations. A restructured approach that leverages institutional knowledge and normalizes discourse on bilateral issues is essential for long-term stability.

Additionally, the discussion emphasized the need for internal stability in both countries. Shifting from a military-centric to a human-centric development approach, particularly in border areas, was advocated as a means of enhancing inner strength and maintaining security more effectively, aligning with broader strategic objectives.

The discussion underscored that external factors also play a significant role in shaping the dynamics of Pak-Afghan relations. Therefore, a managed engagement is essential, taking into account the internal complexities within both nations as well as the external influences that impact the development of a stable and constructive bilateral relationship.

In conclusion, Khalid Rahman stressed the importance of self-assessment in the policy areas of both countries. He noted that while improvements are necessary, it is equally important to recognize the complexity introduced by geopolitical shifts in regional dynamics. Fostering effective dialogue and gaining a comprehensive understanding of these complexities are crucial for advancing Pak-Afghan relations in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape and in the post-truth era.

Bangladesh Chief Justice resigns after ultimatum from student protesters

Bangladesh Chief Justice resigns after ultimatum from student protesters

DHAKA, AUG 10: The Chief Justice of Bangladesh’s top court, Obaidul Hassan, agreed to resign “in principle” following intense pressure from protesters surrounding the Supreme Court, broadcaster Jamuna TV reported.
The 65-year-old judge will tender his resignation after consulting President Mohammed Shahabuddin in the evening, The Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported.

The protests started after Mr Hassan called for a full court meeting with all justices from both divisions of the Supreme Court. The protesting students viewed the convening of the full court meeting as a judiciary coup and announced a siege of the High Court premises. In the face of student protest, Chief Justice Hassan postponed the meeting and later said that he would step down.

Hassan, appointed last year and seen as a loyalist to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was given an one-hour ultimatum to resign.

Bangladesh Bank Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder has also resigned but his resignation has not been accepted given the importance of the position, finance ministry adviser Salehuddin Ahmed told reporters. Days earlier, four deputy governors were forced to resign by 300 to 400 bank officials accusing them of corruption.

The protests, part of the wider unrest that led to Hasina’s departure, have resulted in over 450 deaths, including dozens of police officers. Hasina faces allegations of murder, forced disappearance, money laundering and corruption, and must face the law, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, a senior member of Bangladesh Nationalist Party said. The police union has declared a strike, refusing to return to work until their safety is assured, further complicating the situation.

Hasina has been sheltering in New Delhi since Monday and plans to return to the country and take part in elections.

Many homes and businesses of the country’s minority Hindu community have also been vandalised this week, prompting hundreds of them in northwest Bangladesh to try and flee to neighbouring India. Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus appealed for religious unityas he embraced the weeping mother of a student shot dead by police, a flashpoint in mass protests that ended Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year rule.

A medal that save our country from Humiliation

Qamar Bashir

By Qamar Bashir

Being a nation of 250 million people and experiencing one failure after another of our sportspersons in the Paris Olympics was heartbreaking. These defeats were not due to the failure of the players to perform in the sports arena but rather a reflection of our collective failure in almost every discipline compared to developing or developed nations.

However, it was perhaps divine intervention that nurtured an honest, pure, dedicated, and talented soul for years, saving us from a total whitewash at the Olympic Games and giving the entire nation priceless moments to relish, celebrate, and cherish.

This moment, like for me and my wife, who did not even blink, fearing to miss the golden moments of glory yesterday, came when our only “HERO” Arshad Nadeem made history. He set a record in javelin throw that no one had ever achieved in the past and which will be difficult to break in the near future. His victory was a beacon of hope and pride, reminding us of the potential we hold as a nation when our talents are nurtured and supported.

Today, all our family members stood with pride once again before the TV screen, watching as the gold medal was garlanded around our hero’s neck while our national anthem played in the background. This filled our hearts with overwhelming emotions and brought tears to our eyes. We were at a loss for words to thank Almighty Allah and Arshad Nadeem for giving us such an exalted moment of glory. His achievement saved us from feeling dejected, humiliated, gloomy, and sad.

The Chinese Embassy’s message which Congratulated its Pakistani brothers and sisters on Arshad Nadeem’s historic win of first Olympic gold medal in 40 years and breaking the Olympic record of men’s javelin in Paris was heart-warming.

Now that the entire nation is fully geared to celebrate Jashan-e-Azadi and is preparing to receive our sole hero of the Olympics, we need to conduct a retrospective inspection. This reflection will help us understand the underlying issues that led to our collective failures in the sports arena and pave the way for future improvements.

While being in the power corridors for most of my professional life, I can confidently say that we have many talented, educated, and expert professionals in every field. However, we all know that our potential cannot be fully realized until we establish the rule of law, have clarity in our national objectives, and consistently respect our constitution and the people’s mandate. This includes eliminating the existence of multiple centers of power within the country. Most importantly, it requires investing in our human capital.

Pakistan’s investment in education, health, vocational training, sports, professional training, and research and development significantly lags behind both developed and many developing countries. Pakistan allocates approximately 1.7% of its GDP ($4 billion) to education, in stark contrast to the 6.2% and 5.5% ($800 billion) spent by developed countries and around 9.6% and 9.1% of their GDP spent by some developing countries. In terms of healthcare, Pakistan’s expenditure is also minimal, around 2.8% ($6billion) of GDP, whereas developed nations often spend between 10-12% ($4trillion) of their GDP on health. In research and development (R&D), Pakistan spends less than 0.3% ($ 700 million) of its GDP, which pales in comparison to countries like South Korea and Israel, which invest over 4% ($90Billion) of their GDP in R&D. Similarly, vocational training and sports in Pakistan receive minimal financial support.

Pakistan’s neglect in the sports arena is even more pronounced. The sports budget does not exceed $40 million annually, which includes funding for the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB), various sports federations, and infrastructure projects. There is a lack of a robust network of sports academies and educational institutions dedicated to nurturing young talent. Talent identification programs are sporadic and limited in scope. The economic model for sports in Pakistan is underdeveloped, making the sports economy unlucrative and disorganized compared to successful sports nations.

Enhanced training facilities and access to world-class coaching are virtually non-existent. Comprehensive athlete support programs, including nutrition, sports science, psychology, and medical care, which ensure athletes remain in peak physical and mental condition, are unknown in Pakistan. The integration of sports science and medicine to produce consistently high-performing and medal-winning athletes is absent. This systemic neglect hampers the potential of Pakistani athletes and prevents the country from achieving significant success in international sports competitions.

We know that investment in grassroots programs ensures a steady pipeline of talent by nurturing young athletes from an early age, and long-term investment in these programs will make our sportspersons a dominant force in their respective sports, enabling them to regularly win medals at the Olympics. Structured competitive platforms, such as the college sports system, provide athletes with the necessary experience and exposure, which is crucial for producing numerous Olympic medalists.

We are also well aware that financial support and scholarships allow athletes to focus on training without financial burdens, resulting in sports dominance. International exposure and exchange programs help athletes gain experience and improve performance, leading to consistent success in events like the Olympics and World Championships. These strategies, if implemented effectively, can transform Pakistan’s sports landscape and elevate our athletes to international acclaim.

Ironically, despite knowing what needs to be done to create a sustainable sports ecosystem, our politicians, bureaucrats, both military and civilian, and businessmen have failed to take the necessary actions to lift our country from its abysmal despair. Instead, they have created a haven for themselves and their families in Pakistan and abroad. Their children receive quality education, healthcare, training, and capacity building comparable to the privileged in any developed country. Meanwhile, the masses are left to rely on divine mercy and special prayers, with little support or opportunity for improvement. This stark contrast highlights the deep inequalities and neglect that have hindered the nation’s progress in every sector, including sports. This time around, divine intervention did the magic; next time, it may not.

Three soldiers martyred, four terrorists killed in separate incidents in KP's Tirah

RAWALPINDI, AUG 10: Three Pakistan Army soldiers embraced martyrdom during shootouts with terrorists at three different locations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Tirah Valley, the military’s media affairs wing said on Friday.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), fire exchange took place between security forces and the “Khwarij” at three different locations in Tirah Valley of Khyber District.

“Resultantly, four khwarij were sent to hell due to effective engagement by own troops.”

However, during the intense fire exchange, three brave soldiers — Havildar Inam Gul, 37, resident of District Mianwali; Sepoy Muhammad Imran, 29, resident of District Tank and Sepoy Iltaf Khan, 22, resident of District Mardan, — having fought gallantly embraced Shahadat.

It added that a sanitization operation is being conducted to eliminate any other “Kharji” found in the area as security forces are determined to wipe out the menace of terrorism and such sacrifices of our brave soldiers further strengthen our resolve.

Since the Taliban came into power in Afghanistan in 2021, Pakistan has witnessed a significant surge in terrorist attacks on security forces, especially in provinces bordering the neighbouring country in recent months with the militants using advanced weaponry and equipment.

With the security forces hitting hard on terrorism, the frequency of such incidents of violence went down in recent months. The Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) Annual Security report stated that during the second quarter of the current year, Pakistan witnessed 380 violence-linked fatalities and 220 injuries among civilians, security personnel, and outlaws, resulting from as many as 240 incidents of terror attacks and counter-terror operations.

In the backdrop of this, the federal cabinet had approved the launching of the counter-terrorism operation — Operation Azm-e-Istehkam — following the National Action Plan’s Central Apex Committee’s recommendations to root out terrorism from the country.

US envoy  extension of Afghan refugees

Donald Blome

675,190 Afghans have returned to their country as of August 4

Adil Shaheen

ISLAMABAD: United States Ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome has appreciated Pakistan’s decision to extend the stay of registered Afghan refugees by a year, a statement from the US embassy in Pakistan said on Friday.

A large number of Afghan immigrants, with an estimated 1.7m undocumented as of October 2023, reside in Pakistan. Last October, the caretaker government had announced the repatriation of all illegal foreigners citing security concerns. The decision was alleged to be meant for Afghan refugees, a charge that was denied by officials.

Pakistan launched the first round of deportation in November last year, and according to state-run Radio Pakistan, 675,190 Afghans have returned to their country as of August 4 under the drive.

While the government had decided to begin the second round of repatriation of holders of Afghan Citizenship Cards (ACC), it last month granted 1.45 million Afghan refugees another year, extending their permitted stay in Pakistan till June 30, 2025.

According to the US Mission Spokesperson Jonathan Lalley, Blome expressed the sentiments in a meeting today with Minister of States and Frontier Regions Amir Muqam in Islamabad.

While thanking Muqam for Pakistan’s “long history of hosting Afghan refugees”, Blome also reaffirmed the US’s commitment to working with Pakistan to “assist Afghan refugees and Pakistani community members in areas hosting refugees”.
