PTI alleges CJP Faez Isa of bias against the party: Barrister Gohar

PTI alleges CJP Faez Isa of bias against the party: Barrister Gohar

ISLAMABAD, AUG 12 /DNA/ – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has raised concerns over the impartiality of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa.

In a statement, Barrister Gohar, alleged that CJP Isa is biased against the party and is pursuing actions with the intent of securing an extension in his tenure.

PTI calls for transparency and impartiality in the judiciary to ensure justice for all parties involved. The Imran Khan founding Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has called for the issuance of a notification regarding the next chief justice of Pakistan (CJP).

“The PTI demands notification regarding the next CJP be issued,” Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said while talking to the media along with other party leaders on Monday.

“We want to make it abundantly clear that the extension [in the term of the incumbent CJP] is entirely inadmissible.”

The PTI’s demand came as Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar clarified last month that Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa was not interested in his extension.

Speaking to Geo News programme Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath on July 13, the law minister had said that CJP Isa had told him [Tarar] in the presence of the attorney general that rumours had been circulating about his [Isa’s] extension, and that even if the rumours were true, he was not interested. The former ruling party’s demand regarding the notification of the next top judge is not absolutely unwarranted as the incumbent CJP’s name came to the fore on June 21 last year almost over two months before he took oath of his office on September 17, 2023.

The incumbent chief justice, Pakistan’s 29th CJP, is slated to retire from the top judicial post on October 25, 2024.

In today’s media interaction, Gohar also expressed reservation over the Supreme Court’s ruling that upheld the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) verdict regarding the recount in the National Assembly seats — NA-154, 81 and 79, giving the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) much-needed relief.

The country’s apex court earlier today overturned the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) verdict declaring a recount of votes in the three NA constituencies null where the PML-N’s candidates were declared victorious.

“The members of the National Assembly (MNAs) have taken oath and reversing them stands in contradiction to justice,” he said, adding that the Supreme Court’s verdict on the three seats is against what justice requires.

The PTI chief announced that the party would file a review petition against the ruling as the party has reservations over the verdict.

He dubbed the Supreme Court’s ruling as a conspiracy against the party, saying that previously, the party faced a conspiracy that took away its election symbol that would result in the PTI losing seats.

However, the people foiled this conspiracy on February 8, he added.

“Next, an attempt was made to deprive the party of reserved seats, however, the party became successful in this matter as well,” he added.

“Now, another attempt is being made in the form of a “recount” to take back the PTI’s won seats,.”

Abhishek Bachchan finally addresses Aishwarya Rai divorce rumours

New Delhi, AUG 12: Abhishek Bachchan has reportedly addressed ongoing rumours about his marriage to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Recent speculation arose after Abhishek ‘liked’ a post related to divorce and Aishwarya attended a wedding alone last month. Although the couple has not officially commented on these rumours, multiple publications suggest that Abhishek spoke to an international media outlet about the rumours.

According to The Times of India, Abhishek responded to the speculation in a conversation with Bollywood UK Media by displaying his wedding ring and stating “still married”. He is alleged to have further added: “I don’t have anything to say to you all about that (the rumours). You all have blown the entire thing out of proportion, sadly. I understand why you do it. You have to file some stories. It’s okay, we’re celebrities, we have to take it.”

Abhishek and Aishwarya, who have been married for 17 years and share a daughter named Aaradhya Bachchan, have largely kept their marriage private in recent years. Their social media interactions have been limited to occasional posts on special occasions, like wishing each other on special days such as birthdays and anniversary.

Chairman of the ASEAN Islamabad Committee (ASI) and High Commissioner of Brunei Haji Kamal Bashah says this year’s theme, “ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience,” was particularly timely and significant as we try to navigate ourselves within the complexities of this modern world

Ansar M Bhatti

ISLAMABAD: Chairman of the ASEAN Islamabad Committee (ASI) and High Commissioner of Brunei Haji Kamal Bashah has said since its establishment on 8 August 1967, ASEAN has been a cornerstone of regional stability and growth.

With a combined population of over 690 million people and a combined GDP surpassing 3.6 trillion USD, ASEAN has emerged as one of the significant political and economic player in the global stage.

‘Today, we have undoubtedly been facing numerous global challenges, including the aftermath of the pandemic, regional conflicts, economic uncertainties, and the urgent need of combating the climate change phenomena. In these challenging times, regional organization like ASEAN will continue to play a crucial role in fostering multilateral cooperation in the effort of effectively addressing these issues’.

High Commissioner Kamal said, their commitment to dialogue, consultation, and cooperation based on the ASEAN Way principle, had been instrumental in maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity in the region. This was particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic when ASEAN’s coordinated efforts were vital in mitigating the virus’s socio-economic impacts.

This vision underscored our cooperation in critical areas such as defense, counterterrorism, peacekeeping, economic integration, climate action, and disaster risk reduction.

Dilating upon relations between ASEAN and Pakistan the High Commissioner said, the partnership between ASEAN and Pakistan was rich in history and continues to flourish, grounded in mutual respect and shared goals. Since Pakistan was accorded sectoral dialogue status with ASEAN in 1993, our cooperation has expanded across numerous sectors, including trade, investment, science and technology, environment, tourism, and human resources development.

‘This relationship can be seen in many different forms over the years, including Pakistan’s accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) in 2004 and the establishment of the ASEAN-Pakistan Joint Sectoral Cooperation Committee (AP-JSCC) which has been instrumental in enhancing our collaboration’.

‘Adding to this, just earlier this year, we also welcomed the adoption of the Practical Cooperation Areas between ASEAN and Pakistan for the period of 2024 – 2028, which we are confident will be an instrumental overall framework to advance ASEAN-Pakistan cooperation over the next four years’.

Unfurling details of the trade and investment cooperation he said, the preliminary data indicated that the total two-way trade between ASEAN and Pakistan was growing admirably, rising from USD 10.22 billion in 2021 to USD 10.62 billion in 2022, amounting to about 3.84% increase for that period. These numbers are expected to continue of increasing, particularly as ASEAN is also projecting an economic growth of 4.6% in 2024 and 4.7% in 2025 respectively.

‘The ASEAN tourism industry is a vital economic sector for many nations in the region, is anticipated to continue for its recovery in 2024 as international tourism flows normalize towards pre-pandemic levels across Southeast Asia. This positive trend has been reflected in the number of Pakistani tourists visiting ASEAN countries, which had surged to approximately 131,000 in 2022, marking a more than 50% increase from the 2021 figure of around 5,100’.

‘As we celebrate ASEAN’s 57th anniversary, allow us this opportunity to reaffirm our dedication toward peace, stability, and prosperity in the region. I also wish to thank my fellow ASEAN Heads of Missions, ACI Committee members, Serena Hotel, participants, and all those who have contributed to making this event into a reality, he concluded.

Sheikh Hasina's son denies she blamed US for govt downfall

NEW DELHI, AUG 12: A day after some media outlets reported that former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina blamed the United States for the crisis that led to her government’s downfall, her son, Sajeeb Wazed, clarified that his mother had made no such statement.

“The recent resignation statement attributed to my mother published in a newspaper is completely false and fabricated. I have just confirmed with her that she did not make any statement either before or since leaving Dhaka,” Wazed posted on X.

Media reports had claimed that Hasina’s alleged resignation letter mentioned that she could have saved her government if she had agreed to hand over St Martin Island — a strategically located area 9km south of Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf peninsula — to the United States.

Meanwhile, violence continues to engulf Bangladesh as unrest escalates, even after Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus was appointed to lead the interim government. Yunus faces the immense challenge of restoring order amidst ongoing bloodshed and widespread chaos.

The situation has worsened as the country’s police force, after being brutally attacked — even during attempts to surrender — has refused to work. Officers, fearing further violence, are taking a cautious approach, exacerbating the disorder.

“The police are sitting in plain clothes at their respective stations but remain passive. They have a list of demands, including the creation of a separate ministry for them, and until then, they will go slow,” Professor Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, a well-known political commentator in Dhaka, told TNIE.

Additionally, the Border Security Force (BSF) reported apprehending 11 Bangladeshi nationals attempting to infiltrate into India.

Paris Olympics: USA edge past China with gold in final event to top medal table

PARIS, AUG 12: The United States of America pipped China for top spot in the battle of medals on Sunday as Paris prepared to bring the curtain down on one of the most successful Olympic Games in history.

In a thrilling finale that capped 17 days of spellbinding action, the United States women’s basketball team squeezed past France 67-66 to clinch the last gold of the Games.

The win — the eighth consecutive Olympic women’s basketball won by the USA — ensured the Americans finished level with China on 40 golds each as the games drew to a close.

The USA however finished on top of the overall medal table with a total of 126 medals, with China in second place on 91.

Final Paris 2024 medal table
USA – 40 golds (126 total medals)

China – 40 golds (91 total medals)

Japan – 20 golds

Australia – 18 golds

France – 16 golds

Netherlands – 15 golds

Great Britian – 14 golds

With the last of the medals handed out, attention turned to Sunday’s closing ceremony spectacular at the Stade de France, where Hollywood star Tom Cruise is widely rumoured to feature as the countdown to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics gets under way.

Sunday’s final day began with a gripping women’s marathon victory by the Netherlands’ long-distance running star Sifan Hassan.

Hassan had taken on what many considered to be a crazy gamble in Paris, competing in the 5,000m, the 10,000m and the marathon — the last two events just two days apart.

But in a jaw-dropping sprint finish, Hassan overhauled Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa to take gold by three seconds in an Olympic record of 2hr 22min 55sec.

On Friday she had taken bronze in the 10,000m after coming away with a bronze in the 5,000m.

She fell to the ground on the blue carpet in front of the golden dome of the Invalides memorial complex in the heart of Paris before grabbing a Dutch flag to celebrate an extraordinary achievement.

Wrestling, weightlifting, water polo, volleyball, modern pentathlon, handball, and track cycling were the other sports to crown Olympic champions on the last day.

Hungary’s Michelle Gulyas ran and shot to Olympic gold in the modern pentathlon, with home favourite Elodie Clouvel roared on to clinch silver.

In weightlifting, China’s jubilant Li Wenwen lifted her coach into the air instead of the bar, having already secured gold.

At the velodrome, Dutch star Harrie Lavreysen surged to the men’s keirin for his third gold of the Games, ending British dominance of the event they had won at every Olympics since 2008.

New Zealand’s Ellesse Andrews blasted to the women’s sprint title to add to her keirin gold, while American cyclist Jennifer Valente won the women’s omnium.

In men’s water polo, Serbia won their third straight Olympic gold with a 13-11 victory over Croatia at La Defense Arena and pulled their coach into the pool in the celebrations.

As the sport ends, attention turns to the closing ceremony and the next Olympics in Los Angeles in four years.

Sheikh Hasina alleges US sought regime change in Bangladesh

Sheikh Hasina accuses US of ousting her for refusing to surrender Saint Martin Island

News Desk

NEW DELHI, AUG 11: Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, now residing in India, has accused the United States of playing a role in her removal from power.

In a statement quoted by the Indian newspaper, Hasina claimed she could have remained in office had she been willing to compromise Bangladesh’s sovereignty, particularly by surrendering Saint Martin Island and allowing US influence over the Bay of Bengal.

“I resigned so that I did not have to see the procession of dead bodies. They wanted to come to power over the dead bodies of students, but I did not allow it”, the ousted Bangladeshi PM said.

“I could have remained in power if I had surrendered the sovereignty of Saint Martin Island and allowed America to hold sway over the Bay of Bengal,” Hasina stated, urging her countrymen not to be manipulated by radical elements.

Saint Martin Island, a small 3-square-kilometer landmass in the Bay of Bengal, is situated near the southern tip of Bangladesh.

Hasina expressed deep sorrow over the violence and unrest that followed her resignation on August 5, amid growing student protests against the controversial quota system for government jobs.

The unrest, which included killings, harassment, and vandalism, led to concerns for Hasina’s safety, prompting her to leave Dhaka on a military aircraft. She is currently under protection at an undisclosed location in India.

“My heart cries upon receiving news that many leaders have been killed, workers are being harassed, and their homes are subjected to vandalism and arson. With the grace of almighty Allah, I will return soon”.

“Awami League has stood up again and again. I shall forever pray for the future of Bangladesh, the nation which my great father strived for,” she said.

Hasina also addressed the ongoing student protests, clarifying that her previous comments were distorted to incite unrest.

“I have never called you Razakars. My words were distorted to incite you. Conspirators have taken advantage of your innocence and used you to destabilize the nation,” she said, urging students to view the full context of her statements.

Previously, during a parliamentary session, Hasina accused the US of attempting to orchestrate a regime change in Bangladesh.

Her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, echoed these concerns, suggesting that the recent protests were likely instigated by a foreign intelligence agency, though he refrained from explicitly naming the US

The United States has been consistently critical of Bangladesh’s human rights record and electoral processes.

Iranian president names moderate and female ministers

Iranian president names moderate and female ministers

Agencies

TEHRAN, AUG 11: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has nominated a moderate diplomat as foreign minister and a female official as urban development minister as he presented his new cabinet.

Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf announced on Sunday the names of the 19-member cabinet presented by the president during an assembly session broadcast live on state television.

The nominations appear in line with the hopes that the election of Pezeshkian last month, to replace the hardline Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash in May, could lead to a thaw in Iran’s relations with the West.

However, the parliament, which is dominated by hardliners, will begin a review of the nominees starting on Monday, and then vote whether or not to confirm the lineup.

For foreign minister, Pezeshkian picked Abbas Araghchi, a 61-year-old career diplomat. Araghchi, who has extolled open, yet critical, talks with the West, served as the chief negotiator in nuclear talks between Tehran and world powers from 2013 to 2021.

He also served as Iran’s ambassador to Japan and Finland, and as a deputy of then-Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who was instrumental in reaching the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

Farzaneh Sadegh was nominated as roads and urban development minister. If confirmed, the 48-year-old would become only the second Iranian woman to hold a ministerial post since the Islamic Republic was established in 1979, after Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi became health minister in 2009.

However, many lawmakers voiced their opposition when her name was read out by the speaker during Sunday’s session.

The appointment of the new cabinet comes as the world awaits Iran’s next move in response to the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

Iran has angrily blamed Israel for the killing and vowed harsh retaliation. Western leaders have pleaded for restraint, saying that military action by Iran would threaten to tip the war in Gaza into a full-blown regional conflict.

Pezeshkian came to power with promises to improve ties with the world and ease social restrictions at home. It is thought that he worries that a major military confrontation with Israel would jeopardise his priorities.

General Aziz Nasirzadeh, a former commander of the Iranian Air Force, has been put forward to take the helm at the defence ministry.

The president named General Eskandar Momeni, a 60-year-old police commander and relatively-moderate former member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as interior minister.

Mohsen Paknezhad, a 58-year-old executive director with a long career in the country’s energy industry has been tapped as oil minister.

In late July, Pezeshkian had announced that he would “consult and coordinate” with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say in all matters of state, to present the final list of ministers.

Sheikh Hasina blames US of plotting her ouster

Sheikh Hasina blames US of plotting her ouster

DHAKA, AUG 11: Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid has levelled serious allegations against the United States, claiming that her removal from office was part of a scheme related to Saint Martin Island.

In a statement conveyed through close associates, Hasina alleged that the US sought to influence Bangladesh’s political landscape by pressuring her to cede control over the strategically significant island.

Saint Martin Island, located in the northeastern part of the Bay of Bengal, is Bangladesh’s sole coral reef island and holds considerable importance both economically and strategically. Known locally as “Narikel Jinjira” or Coconut Island, it is approximately 9 kilometers south of the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf peninsula and 8 kilometers west of Myanmar’s northwest coast.

The island supports a local population of about 5,500 people, whose livelihoods depend on fishing, rice and coconut cultivation, and tourism.

Hasina’s claims are rooted in the island’s geopolitical significance. She asserted that the US aimed to establish an airbase on Saint Martin Island, which would have allowed it to exert greater influence over the Bay of Bengal. According to Hasina, her refusal to surrender the island’s sovereignty contributed to her political downfall.

The sovereignty of Saint Martin Island has been a contentious issue between Bangladesh and Myanmar. The dispute was partially resolved in 2012 by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), which confirmed the island’s status within Bangladesh’s territorial sea and exclusive economic zone.

However, tensions resurfaced in 2018 when Myanmar’s updated map incorrectly depicted the island as its own territory. Myanmar later corrected this error, reaffirming the island’s position as part of Bangladesh.

In her address, which was intended to be delivered to the nation before her resignation, Hasina expressed her belief that the US’s failure to secure an airbase on the island played a crucial role in her administration’s collapse.

She asserted that had she remained in power, the situation would have led to significant bloodshed, as the US allegedly sought to leverage the crisis for political gain.

Hasina further alleged that the US aimed to influence the student-led protests that eventually led to her resignation, claiming that the protests were part of a broader strategy to destabilize the region and create a new “Christian state” by merging parts of Bangladesh and Myanmar.

The former Prime Minister has also addressed criticisms regarding her comments about the student protesters during the demonstrations.

She clarified that her remarks, which were construed as disparaging, were misinterpreted and that her intention was not to undermine the students but rather to address the broader political context of the unrest.

Hasina concluded her statement by urging the people of Bangladesh to remain hopeful and resilient, asserting that her resignation was a temporary setback and that the Awami League would emerge stronger from the crisis.
