These 10 villages were just named among Italy’s most beautiful

Here at Wanderlust, we’re always encouraging you to take the road less travelled, particularly at a time when the topic on everyone’s lips is overtourism.

With its Roman historical sites, fabulous weather and delicious food (and cocktails…), Italy has long been among the top destinations for tourists when the summer holidays roll around. But with locals in cities like Rome, Milan and Florence telling visitors to stay away as they struggle under the strain of mass tourism, it’s time to restrict your visits to off-peak season – or go elsewhere.

And if you’re all in favour of exploring little-known destinations, we have some fresh ideas for you courtesy of the association I Borghi più belli d’Italia (The most beautiful villages in Italy).

Established in 2001, the organisation highlights beautiful ‘Borghi’ (villages) across the country, which specifically refers to small Italian towns dating back to the period from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. Generally, they are also fortified and rise around a castle or palace.

So far, 371 villages have been included on the list, each of which has under 2,000 inhabitants (and less than 15,000 in the entire municipal territory) – so there’ll be no chance of your holiday snaps ruined by crowds should you visit.

The latest 10 entries, added in late 2024, range from Piedmont and Lombardy in the north down to Sicily in the south.

Ready to get exploring? Here’s where you need to be headed:

Rassa, Piedmont
Bagolino, Lombardy
Bertinoro, Emilia-Romagna
Mulazzo, Tuscany
Ripatransone, Marche
Scheggino, Umbria
Capranica Prenestina, Lazio
Introdacqua, Abruzzo
Forza D’Agrò, Sicily
Gravina in Puglia, Puglia

Gravina in Puglia is considered a guest village on the list – it’s definitely beautiful enough, but surpasses the maximum inhabitant requirement.

If a list of ten isn’t enough to satisfy you, you can also discover the wider list in the I Borghi più belli d’Italia’s website. The association has published a guide in English, which highlights why the village was included, as well as what food to try while in town, and any events or festivals to keep an eye out for.

Champions Trophy: Australia dominate as England lose two early wickets, Salt falls cheaply

LAHORE: England’s Phil Salt made an aggressive start in the opening over, striking a boundary and a towering six. However, his stay at the crease was cut short in the following over after a stunning one-handed catch by Australia’s Alex Carey in the fourth group-stage clash of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday.

At the 10-over mark, Jos Buttler’s men stood at 72-2, with Steve Smith’s Australian side keeping the pressure on early in the innings.

Earlier, Australia won the toss and opted to field first against their long-time rivals, England, in this high-stakes encounter.

Notably, the Kangaroos have had major injury concerns and top retirements ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025, and have gone with both wicket-keeper batters in their playing XI. As a result, onus will be on Steve Smith to guide the team to glory.

Champions Trophy: Rahmat’s grit in vain as South Africa down Afghanistan by 107 runs

Champions Trophy: Rahmat's grit in vain as South Africa down Afghanistan by 107 runs

KARACHI: Rahmat Shah’s belligerent 90 runs were in vain as Afghanistan suffered a 107-run defeat against South Africa in the third match of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 at the National Bank Stadium on Friday.

Chasing a daunting 316-run target, Afghanistan’s batting unit unfolded on a meagre 208 in 43.3 overs despite a valiant innings from Rahmat Shah.

The middle-order batter waged a lone battle for Afghanistan, top-scoring with a gritty 90 off 91 deliveries, laced with nine fours and a six.

Besides him, no Afghanistan batter could pose a significant threat to the Proteas bowlers, with 18 each from Rashid Khan and Azmatullah Omarzai being the notable contributions.

Kagiso Rabada led the bowling charge for South Africa with three wickets, followed by Wiaan Mulder and Lungi Ngidi, who bagged two each, while Keshav Maharaj and Marco Jansen shared two between them.

Earlier, opening batter Ryan Rickelton’s brisk century and Aiden Markram’s blistering half-century powered South Africa to a mammoth total of 315 against Afghanistan.

Proteas notched up 315/6 in the allotted overs, thanks to Rickelton’s maiden ODI century and half-centuries of three South African batters — captain Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen and Markram.

South Africa had an unwanted start to innings as Mohammad Nabi dismissed Tony de Zorzi (11) on the first delivery of the sixth over with just 28 runs on the board.

Following the early hiccup, Bavuma joined Rickelton in the middle and launched an astounding recovery.

The duo batted sensibly to add 129 runs for the second wicket until Nabi struck again to get rid of the South Africa captain, who scored 58 off 76 deliveries with the help of five boundaries.

Rickelton was then involved in a 44-run partnership with Rassie van der Dussen and brought up his maiden ODI century before getting run out by Rashid Khan.

He remained the top-scorer for South Africa with 103 off 106 balls, laced with seven fours and a six.

The Proteas then suffered another major blow to their batting expedition as van der Dussen fell victim to Noor Ahmad after a 46-ball 52, comprised of three fours and two sixes.

Aiden Markram then bolstered South Africa’s total past the 300-run mark with a blistering half-century.

The right-handed batter scored an unbeaten 52 on just 36 balls with the help of six boundaries and a six.

He was also involved in an important 50-run partnership for the fifth wicket with David Miller, who scored 14 off 18.

Mohammad Nabi was the standout bowler for Afghanistan, picking up two wickets for 51 runs in his 10 overs, while Azmatullah Omarzai, Noor and Fazalhaq Farooqi chipped in with one scalp apiece.

Earlier, after winning the toss, South Africa captain Bavuma expressed confidence and said that his team “will try to score well”. Meanwhile, Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi said that had they gone the other way, his team would have opted to bat.

“We will be happy if we start well,” he said, adding, “We have played good cricket against South Africa before.”

Earlier, during a pre-match press conference, Bavuma highlighted the challenges posed by Afghanistan’s spin-heavy attack and emphasised the importance of adapting to the conditions in Karachi.

Bavuma had noted that the surfaces in Karachi have been batter-friendly, with teams consistently posting scores around 300 in recent matches. However, he emphasised the need for his bowling unit to remain disciplined and precise to counter the high-scoring trend.

“Our challenge as a bowling unit is to be one of the more disciplined and precise bowling units,” he said.

“From a batting point of view, scoreboard pressure is a big thing. Guys getting in, making sure they go big so we can challenge for those 330–350 type of scores.”

On the other hand, Shahidi highlighted his team’s success over the years and claimed they are ready for the eight-team tournament, dismissing the notion of being under pressure while facing South Africa, who boast a slight edge in the head-to-head record.

“A lot has changed since 2019 and recently, we beat them 2-1 in Sharjah. So, we have that confidence with us and we are not under any pressure because right now, we are focusing on what we can do in this tournament,” said Shahidi.

“I believe our team is ready for this tournament and we are only focusing on our team so there is no pressure on us,” he added.

CPSC hosts Dr. Thitinan Pongsudhirak on U.S.-China Dynamics and ASEAN’s Future

CPSC hosts Dr. Thitinan Pongsudhirak on U.S.-China Dynamics and ASEAN's Future

ISLAMABAD, 21 FEB /DNA/ – The China Pakistan Study Centre (CPSC) at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) hosted Dr. Thitinan Pongsudhirak, Director Institute of Security and International Studies, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, as part of its Distinguished Lecture Series. Dr. Pongsudhirak deliberated on the topic of “Southeast Asia/ASEAN between the U.S. and China: Dynamics and Prospects.” The event was attended by former federal ministers, senior diplomats, practitioners, academicians and members of civil society.

In his welcome remarks, DG ISSI Ambassador Sohail Mahmood highlighted Dr. Thitinan’s intellectual and academic contributions to strategic thought in Thailand and ASEAN region and his role in influencing the research and policy discourse. On Pakistan-Thailand relations, he noted that these have evolved over decades and embraced myriad sectors such as trade, investment, education, science and technology, culture, and tourism. Both countries are also bound together by civilizational linkage tracing back to the ancient Buddhist Gandhara heritage of Pakistan. In the past, Pakistan and Thailand worked together in SEATO. Today, Pakistan counts Thailand among steadfast supporters of Pakistan’s elevated partnership with ASEAN. Ambassador Sohail Mahmood said it is important to understand perspective on contemporary Southeast Asia and ASEAN from Thailand. He noted that while in previous decades ASEAN’s growth trajectory had benefited from stable major-power relations, the region was now facing strong headwinds owing to sharpening contestation between the U.S. and China. It remained to be seen how ASEAN would navigate this complex and treacherous geopolitical landscape. He said that there was no better qualified scholar than Dr. Thitinan to speak on the subject with real knowledge and insight.

Dr. Thitinan Pongsudhirak, during his lecture, emphasized that the world is in transition. This has been even more pronounced since the inauguration of the second term of President Donald Trump in the United States. He noted that Donald Trump’s policy features two prominent themes: nativism and economic nationalism. This means that the United States shall not be interventionist any more, however, the country shall be increasingly protectionist and adopt policies that put greater onus on U.S. allies. Regarding China, Dr. Pongsudhirak noted that the country is on a trajectory of “manifest resurgence” due to its historical role in the world and its ongoing geostrategic projects like the Belt and Road Initiative. The so-called “new Cold War” is merely a continuity of the Cold War with the difference being economic altercation, he noted. The pressing question is how long a geoeconomic conflict can last until it transforms into confrontation and hostility. Regarding ASEAN, he noted that the accentuating major-power competition had led to the organization losing its centrality. The group has been divided on a number of issues including democratization in Myanmar, conflict in Ukraine, and situation in Gaza. These developments shall lead to resurgence of Southeast Asia as a region that is not denoted merely by cooperation among ASEAN members. For Southeast Asia and ASEAN the US-China relationship has been most consequential in the recent years.

Earlier during his welcome remarks, Dr. Talat Shabbir, Director CPSC, highlighted that ASEAN and the Southeast Asian region is navigating a complex yet promising era in the international order. ASEAN nations seek to maintain strategic autonomy while fostering constructive engagement with all major powers including the United States and China. In this backdrop, understanding implications of relations between these two countries for the rest of the world is crucial.

Ambassador Khalid Mahmood, Chairman BOG ISSI, during his closing remarks noted that the older world order is coming to an end while a new order is not yet born. The present world is in a period of transition facing great disruption. He noted that there is an increasing need to enhance the role of middle powers and reform the UN-led system of international laws and practices for a more stable international order.

The event concluded with a question-and-answer session.

Chairman PPP announces Oxford University’s Scholarships for Sindh and Balochistan

Chairman Bilawal strongly condemns terror attack in Khuzdar, Balochistan

ISLAMABAD, 21 FEB /DNA/ – The Government of Sindh, in collaboration with the Oxford Pakistan Programme (OPP), has announced two prestigious scholarships named after Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. These scholarships will be part of OPP’s annual graduate scholarship program and will support highly talented students from Sindh in pursuing graduate studies at the University of Oxford.

Historically, access to institutions like Oxford has been largely limited to privileged students, leaving behind talented individuals from underprivileged areas. OPP is committed to breaking this barrier to ensure that world-class educational opportunities are not restricted to a specific class. Last year, OPP awarded scholarships to two students from Sindh and one from Balochistan, taking a step towards bridging this educational gap. To further this objective, OPP is working with various government institutions to establish sustainable educational pathways for students from underprivileged areas, ensuring that educational opportunities are determined by merit rather than background.

Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, announced these two prestigious scholarships during their official visit to the University of Oxford. Chairman Bilawal was invited to a luncheon by the Principal of Lady Margaret Hall (LMH), Professor Stephen Blyth. During this event, he was briefed on the vision and initiatives of the Oxford Pakistan Programme (OPP) and discussed the fundamental support provided by Lady Margaret Hall to OPP. The luncheon was also attended by Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s sister, Mohtarma Sanam Bhutto, renowned author, historian, and LMH alumna, Victoria Schofield, along with senior delegations from the Governments of Sindh and Balochistan.

Both Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto studied at the University of Oxford. These scholarships pay tribute to their legacy and offer young individuals from Sindh the opportunity to pursue world-class education and bring positive change to their communities.

Speaking on this occasion, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari stated:

“OPP is creating opportunities for Pakistanis, especially talented students from underprivileged backgrounds. I want to thank the Governments of Sindh and Balochistan for launching scholarship programs in collaboration with OPP for students from their provinces.”

The Oxford Pakistan Programme is led by a team of Oxford University academics and alumni, including Professor Adeel Malik (University of Oxford), Dr. Talha J. Pirzada (Lecturer in Material Science), Haris Zaman (corporate lawyer in London), and former Oxford student Manahil Saqib. OPP supports students and researchers of Pakistani origin through scholarships, hardship funds, the annual Iqbal Lecture, and the Graduate Access Programme.

On this occasion, Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, said:

“These scholarships will provide students from Sindh the opportunity to study at one of the world’s best universities. Not only will these students benefit from this opportunity, but Sindh as a whole will also gain when these scholars return to their communities with knowledge and skills to drive progress.”

This initiative reflects the commitment of the Government of Sindh and OPP to invest in education and nurture future leaders. Under this fund, each year, six outstanding students from Sindh will receive financial support for graduate degrees at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. Three of these scholarships will be awarded to women under the “Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Scholarship” and three under the “Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Scholarship.” Pakistani scholar and former Oxford Union President, Israr Khan, has also played a key role in facilitating these scholarships.

Secretary of Finance for the Government of Balochistan, Imran Zarkoon Khan, stated:

“We take pride in the fact that Balochistan was the first province to launch these scholarships. We hope this initiative will create new opportunities and enable talented students from Balochistan to succeed at Oxford and contribute to the development of the province.”

The Oxford Pakistan Programme is playing a transformative role in supporting Pakistani students at Oxford through various initiatives. So far, OPP has provided financial assistance of over £600,000, enabling 48 Pakistani graduate scholars to pursue their studies at Oxford. The partnership between OPP and the Government of Sindh is part of this larger mission to ensure that talented students from Sindh, Balochistan, and other underprivileged areas have access to world-class education.
