Champions Trophy: New Zealand take shaky start as Young, Williamson fall

Champions Trophy: New Zealand take shaky start as Young

RAWALPINDI, FEB 24: Bangladesh bowlers landed early blows to New Zealand as the Blackcaps lose wickets of Will Young (0) and Kane Williamson (5) at the beginning of their innings to chase a modest 237-run target in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 group match being played at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Monday.

Earlier, skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto’s 77 and Jaker Ali’s resistance in death overs helped Bangladesh to set a modest target of 237 runs against New Zealand following Michael Bracewell’s four-fer.

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner’s decision to bowl first paid dividends as an all-round bowling effort gave them a modest total to chase.

Bangladesh got off to a relatively decent start to their innings as openers Najmul Hossain Shanto and Tanzid Hasan laid a solid foundation with a 45-run stand, culminating with the latter’s dismissal in the ninth over.

Bangladesh then began to lose wickets at regular intervals and were eventually reduced to 118/5 in 26.1 overs with Shanto still hanging on.

The skipper finally received ample support from the other end in the form of middle-order batter Jaker Ali, who scored a valiant century in Bangladesh’s campaign opener against India in Dubai.

The duo added an important 45 runs for the sixth wicket until Shanto fell victim to Will O’Rourke in the 38th over.

The Bangladesh remained the top-scorer for his side with a gutsy 77 off 110 deliveries, laced with nine fours.

Jaker oversaw Bangladesh’s batting expedition until the penultimate over and walked back after scoring an important 45 off 55 balls with the help of three fours and a six.

He was also involved in a handy 33-run partnership with Rishad Hossain, who made a 25-ball 26.

Bangladesh’s number nine Taskin Ahmed added further valuable runs at the backend with a 10-run cameo, coming off 20 deliveries.

Bracewell was the standout bowler for New Zealand, taking four wickets for just 26 runs in his 10 overs, followed by O’Rourke with two, while Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson made one scalp apiece.

PAJCCI urges Pakistan, Afghanistan to resolve Torkham border closure

PAJCCI urges Pakistan, Afghanistan to resolve Torkham border closure

From Our Correspondent

PESHAWAR, FEB 24 : Senior Vice President Pak-Afghan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PAJCCI), Zia-ul-Haq Sarhadi, has urged the governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan to address the challenges faced by traders and the public due to the ongoing closure of the Pak-Afghan border at Torkham.

In a press statement issued on Monday, Zia-ul-Haq Sarhadi, who is also an Executive Member of the Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), highlighted the severe impact of the border closure, which has persisted for the last three consecutive days.

He stated that the shutdown has not only halted trade between the two neighbouring countries but has also left thousands of people in distress on both sides of the border.

He pointed out that approximately 2,500 goods-laden trucks are stranded on the Pakistani side, waiting for clearance, with a similar number of vehicles stuck across the border.

Many of these trucks carry perishable goods, including meat, poultry, vegetables, fruits, and juices, which risk spoilage if not transported promptly.

Furthermore, Zia noted that hundreds of people, including patients, women, children, and elderly passengers, are stranded at the border, anxiously waiting for it to reopen. Many have been forced to wait at immigration centers for the past three days without any clear updates on the situation.

The PAJCCI official also expressed concerns over the financial strain on the business community, which was already grappling with the imposition of a two percent Infrastructure Development Cess on export consignments in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Although the provincial government later reduced the cess to one percent, businesses continue to shift to other provinces, particularly Balochistan, due to the added costs.

Zia emphasized that sudden and prolonged closures of the Torkham border severely disrupt bilateral trade, causing significant economic losses for businesses on both sides.

He urged authorities in Pakistan and Afghanistan to resolve the issue immediately and ensure the uninterrupted movement of trade and passengers for the benefit of both nations.

KBM Care – serving the underserved

KBM Care - serving the underserved

By Khalid Bin Majeed

“Mighty oaks from little acorns grow”. This proverb encapsulates the KBM Care Foundation’s rapid rise as a trusted humanitarian force since its inception in 2022.

Despite minimal initial publicity, the Foundation has transformed lives in Pakistan’s underserved regions, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, through collaborative efforts with volunteers, donors, and partners.

Headquartered in Islamabad, the Foundation operates through its strong volunteer’s base across the county including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. This decentralized model enables tailored responses to the local needs, such as earthquake relief in Muzaffarabad and drought mitigation in Balochistan.

We believe that dealing with healthcare in hospitals and man-made disasters is not enough until we deal with some major causes of these problems.

Tobacco products, sugary drinks, substandard ghee and oils, low quality food items etc. account for much of the most of diseases we come across in hospitals. Similarly, ignoring safety protocols and violating environment protection guidelines lead not only to natural disasters but also squandering of resources like water. A team of self-motivated students of different universities working on these themes under the guideline of Dr. Hassan Shehzad, a known media professional and teacher, whose reports have been referred to by as prestigious institutions as IMF, is dedicated to address the causes of diseases and natural disasters.

Below is a streamlined overview of its impact, challenges, and vision is as und.

Equitable aid for marginalized communities:  Over the past three years, our trained volunteers have provided food and nonfood items and financial assistance to over 17,300 low-income and marginalized families in the underserved areas. Fifty sessions were conducted to train the volunteers in effectively responding to the emergency situations.

Health and care service: Providing comprehensive health services — including primary health care, communicable diseases, maternal health, psychological support services, nutrition and capacity-building of health facilities — is a fundamental segment of our programe, prioritizing women, children and vulnerable people. During the period in question, 15,430 patients were served by arranging 12 medical camps and 10 eye camps.

Water, sanitation and hygiene services: Our carefully crafted and meticulously executed WASH programs have benefitted around 25,000 people by enhancing their access to hygiene and clean water. The communities were engaged through the media campaigns in national newspapers and area elders. Five filtrations plants have been installed at different places to cater to the deserving people.

Displacement and migration assistance: This segment focuses on enhancing the wellbeing and resilience of displaced people by ensuring their access to health, education, and social services. So far, a total of 713 displaced individuals have been supported. Ten education support programs have been launched for their welfare.

Community development programs: By leveraging indigenous wisdom and fostering shared vision, our community development initiatives have driven regional awareness and contributed to SDG health outcomes and climate action. Twenty events have been held so far for community engagement, while 15 partnerships have been established with the academia, media, and art councils.

Cash assistance and livelihood support: Our cash assistance program aims to provide livelihood and food security to the vulnerable and disaster-hit individuals through dignified and transparent assistance. Cash has been provided to 60 individuals while 30 training sessions have been conducted for imparting vocational training.

Youth engagement and development: Our youth programs remained focused on leadership development, volunteerism and skill training, preparing the next generation go contribute in a big way to the society. Twenty-five leadership workshops have been conducted so far, training 5,000 volunteers.

Legal support program: This program aims to provide free technical and legal support to the juveniles and prisoners who can’t afford legal representation. Under the program, the Foundation has provided 50 individuals with legal assistance by holding five legal aid clinics.

Challenges & Resilience: Resource constraints: Limited funding delayed the expansion of a Gilgit-Baltistan maternal health project.

Political instability: Operational pauses in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to 2023 election-related disruptions.

Logistical hurdles: The Foundation leveraged partnerships with local NGOs to reach the isolated communities during natural or manmade disasters. Despite these challenges, partnerships with international organizations and local governments ensured continuity.

A beacon of hope: The Foundation remains committed to dignity, equity, and resilience. By refining strategies based on past lessons — such as integrating community feedback into program design — it aims to empower marginalized populations, ensuring sustainable growth and hope for generations.

Champions Trophy: Kohli’s masterclass powers India to 6-wicket win over Pakistan

Champions Trophy: Kohli's masterclass powers India to 6-wicket win over Pakistan

DUBAI: Virat Kohli smashed his 51st ODI century to power India to a resounding six-wicket victory over Pakistan in the high-octane ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 clash here at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

Chasing a modest 242-run target, India comfortably knocked the winning runs for the loss of four wickets and 45 balls to spare, thanks to a match-defining 114-run partnership between Kohli and Shreyas Iyer.

The former champions got off to a brief flamboyant start to the pursuit as their openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill added 31 runs in 29 deliveries until Shaheen Shah Afridi gave Pakistan their first success by bowling the Indian captain on 20.

India’s star batter Kohli then joined Gill in the middle and kept India in control with a 69-run partnership which culminated with the opener’s dismissal in the 18th over.

Gill scored 46 off 52 deliveries with the help of six boundaries.

Kohli then joined forces with Iyer and put India in touching distance to the victory by stitching a 114-run partnership, amid which, both batters scored their respective half-centuries.

The duo appeared in complete control to steer India over the line but Khushdil Shah caused a minor stir by dismissing Iyer, who struck five fours and a six on his way to a 67-ball 56.

India then suffered another blow to their run chase in the next over when Shaheen got Hardik Pandya (eight) caught behind.

The back-to-back blows, however, did not bother India much as Kohli ensured that there were no further hiccups in the run chase.

Virat Kohli remained the top-scorer for India with an unbeaten 100 off 111 balls, laced with seven boundaries.

For Pakistan, Shaheen picked up two wickets, while Abrar and Khushdil made one scalp apiece.

Opting to bat first, the hosts could accumulate 241 runs before getting bowled out in the final over despite an anchoring half-century by Saud Shakeel.

Pakistan’s new opening pair of Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq looked in fine touch as they added 41 runs before Hardik Pandya provided a much-needed breakthrough to India by getting the former caught behind.

Babar scored 23 off 26 deliveries, smashing five boundaries in the process.

Making his return to the national team, Imam could not convert a cautious start into a big knock as he was run out by Axar Patel in the next over, resulting in Pakistan slipping to 47/2 in 9.2 overs.

Following the back-to-back blows, skipper Mohammad Rizwan and Saud partnered to force recovery.

The pair batted sensibly to add an important 104 runs for the third wicket until Rizwan was cleaned up by Axar Patel in the 34th over.

The Pakistan captain mustered 46 runs from 77 balls with the help of three fours.

Pakistan’s batting mainstay Saud followed suit just eight deliveries later, walking back after top-scoring with a 76-ball 62, comprised of five fours.

Experienced Ravindra Jadeja then strengthened India’s command by cleaning up Tayyab Tahir (four) and reduced Pakistan to 165/5 in 36.1 overs.

Pakistan vice-captain Salman Ali Agha and Khushdil Shah then forged a 35-run partnership to take their team’s total to the 200-run mark but Kuldeep Yadav denied them a comeback by striking twice on consecutive deliveries.

Khushdil then took the reins of Pakistan’s batting expedition and scored 38 off 39 deliveries with the help of two fours.

He was also involved in brief partnerships with Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf, who made 14 and eight respectively.

Kuldeep Yadav was the standout bowler for India, taking three wickets, followed by Pandya with two, while Harshit Rana, Jadeja and Patel made one scalp apiece.
