Govt slashes petrol by Re0.50, diesel by Rs5.31 for next fortnight

Govt slashes petrol by Re0.50

ISLAMABAD, MAR 1: The federal government has reduced the price of petrol by Re0.50 per litre for the next fortnight “in view of recent fluctuations in the international oil market”.

According to a notification issued by the Finance Division, petrol will now be available for Rs255.63 per litre, down from Rs256.13.

The official notification said the new fuel prices will be effective from March 1.

Similarly, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) has been reduced from Rs263.95 to Rs258.64 after a reduction of Rs5.31 per litre.

“The Oil & Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has reviewed and adjusted consumer prices for petroleum products in view of recent fluctuations in the international oil market,” stated the notification.

Meanwhile, prices of other petroleum products have also been reduced.

The new price of kerosene oil will be Rs168.12, down by Rs3.53 from Rs171.65 per litre. Likewise, the price of light-diesel oil has been reduced by Rs2.47 from Rs155.81 to Rs153.34 per litre.

Petrol is mainly used in private transportation, small vehicles, rickshaws, and two-wheelers. Higher fuel prices significantly impact the budgets of the members of the middle and lower-middle classes, who primarily consume petrol for commuting.

On the other hand, a significant portion of the transport sector relies on high-speed diesel.

Its price is considered inflationary since it is predominantly used in heavy goods transport vehicles, trucks, buses, trains, and agricultural machinery such as tractors, tube wells, and threshers. The consumption of high-speed diesel particularly contributes to the increased prices of vegetables and other food items.

15 most naturally beautiful states in the U.S.

15 most naturally beautiful states in the U.S.

National parks, pristine coasts, and spectacular forests set these states apart from all the others.

There are always endless reasons to plan a trip abroad, but there are just as many to travel domestically within the U.S. At the top of that list is the diversity of our country’s natural landscapes. We have everything—from arid deserts and lush rainforests to heavily forested mountains and even majestic glaciers. Waterfalls, gorges, rolling hills, and coastal scenes are also prominent, depending on where you go.

When it comes to natural beauty, however, some states rank slightly higher than others. So with the help of a few U.S.-based travel experts, we rounded up the best of the best. Below, in no particular order, are the most naturally beautiful states in the U.S.

Hawaii

“From dramatic and lush mountaintops to red-hued canyons and thundering waterfalls, ringed by jaw-dropping coastlines, the Pacific Island paradise of Hawaii is hands-down the most naturally beautiful state in the U.S.,” says Janice Moskoff, founder and editor of Gather & Go Travel. Though there are many ways to immerse yourself in Hawaii’s splendor—including surfing, hiking, boat tours, and scenic drives—she recommends one in particular: “To experience it best, book a once-in-a-lifetime helicopter ride over islands like Kauai, where you can catch an unforgettable aerial view of Manawaiopuna Falls or the iconic Napali Coast.”

Arizona

“With red rock canyons, cacti as far as the eye can see, dark sky parks, and spectacular sunsets, Arizona is easily one of the most beautiful states,” says Kirsten Maxwell, the content creator behind Groups Are a Trip. To witness the sheer diversity in the landscapes, she suggests checking out the “unique formations of Antelope Canyon and the Grand Canyon, the sandstone rocks of Sedona, and the endless miles of cacti in Saguaro National Park.” Moskoff also recommends a similar itinerary, adding that travelers will “gain a life-changing perspective gazing over the breathtaking chasm of the Grand Canyon.”

Utah

Utah bats well above average when it comes to natural beauty—and it’s one state that continues to amaze and surprise me whenever I get a chance to visit. Not only does it lay claim to the “Mighty Five” national parks—Bryce Canyon, Zion, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, and Arches—but it also boasts gorgeous lakes (don’t miss Bear Lake, also known as the “Caribbean of the Rockies”), hot springs, and an abundance of mountains in all shapes and sizes. It’s no wonder millions of visitors, myself included, make their way to the Beehive State every year to hike, backpack, bike, and ski among the most pristine landscapes.

Alaska

You simply can’t talk about the natural beauty found in the United States without mentioning Alaska. With eight national parks within its boundaries—including Denali National Park and Preserve, Kenai Fjords National Park, and Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve—this is a state where travelers can experience true wilderness. Mountains, glaciers, and rivers all define the incredible landscape, but some of the most stunning scenes are found overhead. The aurora borealis is known to frequent Alaskan skies between late August and mid-April.

North Carolina

North Carolina is another state where natural beauty is found in various forms. The dozens of waterfalls in Highlands, for instance, are photogenic in every way. There’s no question that Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the state’s highlights, too; after all, it’s regularly one of the most-visited parks in the U.S. I’m also fond of the North Carolina coast. The Outer Banks and the beaches on the Brunswick Islands offer some of the best sunsets you’ll ever see—not to mention, the wide, flat, relatively uncrowded beaches are unbeatable for a relaxing getaway.

Texas

Texas is proof that there’s no one definition of beauty. Some travelers may immediately fall for the ruggedness of Big Bend National Park, while others may prefer the rolling landscape of Texas Hill Country. There are also the state’s waterfront areas; Padre Island National Seashore, Caddo Lake, and the Medina River are all worthy of a visit. And if you go beneath the surface, you’ll discover even more natural beauty. Natural Bridge Caverns and the Caverns of Sonora are undeniably some of the most incredible sites in the Lone Star State.

Washington

Washington is one of those states where natural beauty reigns supreme. It’s famously home to three national parks—Mount Rainier National Park, Olympic National Park, and North Cascades National Park—and it attracts visitors from around the world who want to see its beaches, rainforests, waterfalls, glaciers, mountains, and active volcanoes for themselves. If you’ve already explored the major parks but can’t get enough of the state, add Snoqualmie Falls, Steptoe Butte State Park, and the Coulee Corridor National Scenic Byway to your upcoming travel plans.

Wyoming

Jackson Hole may have been my initial introduction to the Cowboy State, but I’ve since discovered Wyoming’s beauty extends far beyond the jagged Tetons. Once you’ve checked Grand Teton National Park off your list, start to look elsewhere—maybe north to Yellowstone National Park, southeast to Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest and Curt Gowdy State Park, and over to Devils Tower National Monument in the northeast corner of the state, possibly driving the Bighorn Scenic Byway along the way.

Rhode Island

“As a frequent traveler, I feel that Rhode Island is a hidden gem among the most naturally beautiful states,” says Dominic Brown, owner of TallTravelEats. The state may not be big—in fact, it’s the smallest of the 50 states—but it has a multitude of places to find unparalleled beauty. Visit Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge to see the 242-acre wintering area for migratory birds in Middletown, or stop in Beavertail State Park for an amazing coastline view. Block Island is another seaside spot that grants visitors access to some of the most stunning beaches in the Northeast.

Tennessee

If your only idea of Tennessee is the buzzing nightlife and various human-made attractions in Nashville, it’s time to expand your understanding of the Volunteer State. “Everyone knows about Great Smoky Mountains National Park, but the state is also home to countless underground attractions due to the area’s karst formations including the largest underground lake in the country, The Lost Sea, and the tallest underground waterfall in the U.S., Ruby Falls,” explains Maxwell. You don’t necessarily have to go underground to find exceptional beauty, though. She also suggests checking out the Twin Arches natural rock formation and the Tennessee River Gorge.

Virginia

“There are many amazing places to take in Virginia’s stunning diverse landscapes,” says Brown, noting that the Belle Isle Suspension Bridge in Richmond is one of his favorites. “The bridge is an excellent place to capture Richmond’s natural beauty, hike, bike, or just relax.” As a fellow Virginian, I’d also recommend a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway (especially during the fall), a trip up to the wild beaches of Assateague and Chincoteague, a long hike in Great Falls Park, and a stop to see the 215-foot-tall limestone arch found in Natural Bridge State Park.

California

“It is nearly impossible to choose which feature of this almost 800-mile-long state is most beautiful,” says Moskoff. “Could it be the sweeping coastlines of the Pacific Coast Highway or the awe-inspiring redwoods towering over its natural spaces? Perhaps instead, it is the romantically beautiful rolling hills of its wine countries or its starker desert landscapes that give rise to the singularly distinctive Joshua Trees and riots of wildflowers if you are fortunate to visit during a super bloom.” Brown also calls out the “stunning scenery and tall trees at Yosemite National Park,” a destination he says “all nature lovers should have on their U.S. bucket list.”

Colorado

“Colorado is a state full of natural beauty and treasures,” says Brown, who specifically recommends stopping in Glenwood Springs to relax in the natural hot springs. “Iron Mountain Hot Springs is nestled between the mountains, giving visitors a picturesque view of the beautiful surrounding area.” Colorado is also the home of Rocky Mountain National Park, where summer wildflowers and fall foliage create miles and miles of picture-perfect views; the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, which contains the tallest dunes in North America; and the Garden of the Gods, a geological formation of red rocks dating back more than 300 million years.

Montana

Maxwell calls Montana “one of the most perfect places on Earth,” and if you’ve ever explored the Treasure State, you’ll likely agree. Of course, a significant amount of its natural beauty is found in Glacier National Park. “Blanketed in coniferous forest, dotted with alpine lakes and turquoise waterfalls and the glaciers that feed them, Glacier is inarguably gorgeous. Set against the white-capped mountains of three mountain ranges that crisscross the park, a visit here will plunge you into the pristine wilderness of the Western U.S. as few other places or experiences can,” says Moskoff.

Maine

“If you love dramatic fogs along rocky and forest-covered coastlines followed by sunshine that reflects technicolor against the ever-present water, then you might find the natural beauty of Maine breathtaking, too,” says Moskoff. Whether you venture up to Maine for fresh lobster rolls and pleasant beach weather in the summer, or wait until the fall, when the foliage starts to change, you’re guaranteed to see some of the most wondrous sights.

One of the best ways to take in the beauty is getting out on the water, and Moskoff recommends kayaking or taking a boat tour on the Gulf of Maine. “You can also immerse yourself in the dense trees and lakes of the state by hiking iconic trails like the Appalachian Trail or the favorites in Acadia National Park, like the Beehive Loop,” she says.

Australia book semi-final spot after rain washes out Afghanistan clash

Australia book semi-final spot after rain washes out Afghanistan clash

LAHORE, FEB 28: Australia secured their place in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semi-finals after their crucial clash against Afghanistan was washed out due to rain at the Gaddafi Stadium on Friday.

Australia, who started their campaign with a stunning victory over arch-rivals England, finished with four points as their remaining two matches ended in no results.

The two-time champions, as a result, became the first team to qualify for the Final Four from Group B, while Afghanistan are not all but out of the tournament even if England beat South Africa on Saturday as the Asian side are well behind the Proteas in terms of net run rate.

Chasing Afghanistan’s 273-run target, Australia started aggressively, with Head smashing a blistering fifty to give his side early momentum.

However, Azmatullah Omarzai broke the opening stand by removing Matthew Short, who scored 20 off 15 balls with the help of three boundaries and one six.

With Australia at 109/1 at 12.5 overs, play was halted due to heavy showers, leaving both teams waiting for the weather to clear.

Earlier, Omarzai’s explosive innings propelled Afghanistan to a competitive total of 273 runs despite a spirited fightback from the Aussie bowlers.

The right-handed batter scored a crucial 67 off 63 runs with the help of one boundary and five sixes after Sediqullah Atal’s 85 had laid the foundation, helping Afghanistan recover from mid-innings setbacks.

Batting first, Afghanistan accumulated 273/10 in their allotted 50 overs.

Afghanistan got off to a shaky start to their innings as Spencer Johnson cleaned up Rahmanullah Gurbaz on the fifth delivery of the match.

Following the early hiccup, Atal joined in-form Ibrahim Zadran in the middle and launched recovery.

The duo shared an important 67-run until Adam Zampa provided a much-needed breakthrough to Australia in the 14th over by getting Zadran caught at backward point.

The right-handed opener scored 22 off 28 deliveries with the help of two boundaries.

Afghanistan then suffered another blow as Rahmat Shah (12) fell victim to Glenn Maxwell in the 19th over, bringing the total down to 91/3.

Atal then put together a one-sided 68-run partnership for the fourth wicket with skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi before finally walking back in the 32nd over.

He remained the top-scorer for Afghanistan with a 95-ball 85, comprised of six fours and three sixes.

His dismissal sparked a brief middle-order collapse which saw Afghanistan losing three wickets in quick succession and as a result, had slipped to 199/7 in 40 overs.

But a timely half-century from in-form all-rounder Omarzai bolstered Afghanistan to a formidable total.

He also shared a handy 36-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Rashid Khan, who made a 17-ball 19.

For Australia, Ben Dwarshuis took three scalps while Johnson and Zampa picked up two wickets each. Glenn Maxwell and Nathan Ellis made one scalp apiece.

The match was a critical one for both sides as a victory would steer the winning side into the semi-finals.

On Wednesday, the Afghans kept their dream alive in a nerve-wracking encounter against England, beating them by eight runs. Aussies, on the other hand battered England to chase the mammoth 351-run target, the highest ever score in Champions Trophy’s history.

Afghanistan and Australia have faced each other in ODI cricket four times, with the Kangaroos emerging victorious on all four occasions. The Afghan team is yet to claim a victory against them.

Trump demands return of US military equipment

Trump demands return of US military equipment

Trump’s proposal to retrieve military equipment could lead to re-invading Afghanistan, experts say.

Agencies

Washington: US President Donald Trump has called for the recovery of billions of dollars’ worth of US military equipment left behind in Afghanistan after the US withdrawal in 2021.

During his first Cabinet meeting, Trump criticised the handling of the withdrawal, referring to it as a “disastrous exit.” He specifically mentioned the abandonment of “billions, tens of billions of dollars’ worth of equipment,” including brand new trucks.

Trump argued that the US should make efforts to retrieve the equipment, which he described as “top-of-the-line stuff” displayed by the Taliban on their roadways.

Trump also called for the removal of military leaders involved in the withdrawal process.

President Donald Trump has suggested that the United States should consider re-invading Afghanistan to reclaim military equipment left behind after the chaotic troop withdrawal in 2021.

In remarks made during the first cabinet meeting of his second administration, Trump criticised the withdrawal and discussed the billions of dollars worth of equipment left behind by the US military.

Trump, who negotiated the initial withdrawal terms with the Taliban during his presidency, was asked about holding military officers accountable for the flawed execution of the withdrawal under President Joe Biden.

The withdrawal led to the collapse of the Afghan government and the rapid takeover of the country by the Taliban.

Seizing on the conversation, Trump shifted focus to the equipment left behind, including vehicles, weapons, and military hardware.

“We left billions, tens of billions of dollars worth of equipment behind, brand new trucks. You see them display it every year, or their little roadway, someplace where they have a road and they drive the, you know, waving the flag and talking about America,” Trump said.

Ethnic and religious diversity are symbols of national unity, says Baradar

Ethnic and religious diversity are symbols of national unity, says Baradar

KABUL: Afghanistan’s Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar says the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) believes in ethnic and religious diversity and considers it a symbol of national unity in the country.

Addressing Shia Muslims at a large gathering aimed at strengthening national unity and supporting the Islamic Emirate system at the Loya Jirga Hall in Kabul, Baradar said: “The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan respects ethnic diversity and regards it as a symbol of national unity.”

Baradar also urged citizens not to believe the rumors and propaganda spread by enemies and to remain united in preserving peace and stability in the country.

“Do not believe the propaganda and misinformation spread by the enemies of the system. They seek to create division among ethnic groups and religions and misuse such situations. We must maintain our unity and solidarity in the right manner,” said Baradar.

Meanwhile, several other officials of the IEA dismissed rumors suggesting that a major upheaval is imminent in the country this year and that the IEA may collapse. They emphasized that on the contrary, this year will be a year of unity among the people, and the Islamic system will remain intact.

Shahabuddin Delawar, the acting head of the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) said: “We declare that this year is the year of unity for Afghans, this year is the year of reconstruction for Afghans, this year is the year of progress for Afghans.”

Some participants at the gathering, while emphasizing their support for the ruling system, added that the people are tired of war and do not want the security and stability achieved so far to be disrupted again.

Some participants also stated that recent meetings held outside Afghanistan are not in the interest of the people or the country, emphasizing that the people will not support plans devised abroad.

It must be noted that hundreds of Shia scholars, elders, and youth from the capital and various provinces of the country participated in this gathering.

Saudi Arabia, UAE to observe first fast tomorrow as Ramadan moon sighted

Saudi Arabia, UAE to observe first fast tomorrow as Ramadan moon sighted

RIYADH: The authorities in Saudi Arabia and the UAE on Friday announced sighting the crescent of the new lunar month marking the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.

Following the sighting of the crescent moon on Friday evening, the holy month of Ramadan, will begin on March 1 (Saturday), the Saudi Supreme Court announced.

Saudi Arabia is usually the first country to see the moon for Islamic months, which is followed by other Arab, Middle Eastern and Western countries and some parts of India.

The Muslim world welcomes Ramadan with religious zeal and fervour. Over a billion believers will fast during the month to practice patience and self-control while also promoting charity and welfare.

The Islamic months last 29 or 30 days and the beginning or end of a month depends on the appearance of crescent, so Ramadan is not set on any specific day annually.

The month of Ramadan is the ninth of the 12 months of the Islamic calendar. Despite having as many months as the Gregorian calendar, the Islamic calendar is nearly 10 days shorter due to being based on the lunar orbit.

This is why Ramadan falls at a different time every year according to the Gregorian calendar.
