Planning minister calls for AI integration across sectors

Planning minister calls for AI integration across sectors

ISLAMABAD, JUL 4: Federal Planning and Development Minister Ahsan Iqbal on Thursday called for the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the national development strategy, announcing new measures, including the establishment of a national AI fund to provide financial support for innovative ideas and pilot projects.

The announcements were made as Iqbal chaired a meeting of the National Task Force on Artificial Intelligence. Formed in April 2023, the body is working to develop a 10-year roadmap for accelerated adoption of AI in different sectors.

According to a statement from the Press Information Department, during the meeting, Iqbal emphasised that it was time for Pakistan to move with clarity and purpose.

“He stated that AI adoption cannot be advanced in isolation and must instead be guided by cross-sectoral collaboration, alignment with national priorities, and effective coordination across all relevant institutions,” the statement read.

It added that the taskforce was assigned a clear mandate to identify twelve key sectors, including education, health, agriculture, climate, business, and governance, where AI applications can generate measurable national benefits.

“Each sector will establish a multi-stakeholder working group, comprising experts from government, academia, and the private sector. These groups will develop sector-specific AI roadmaps, with defined objectives, timelines, and resource requirements,” the statement said. “The purpose is to ensure that Pakistan not only aligns with global technological trends but also maximises the utility of AI in solving domestic challenges.”

The minister also directed the establishment of a national AI fund to provide financial support for innovative ideas and pilot projects. To utilise these resources effectively, he called for the mapping of AI experts, research centres, and resources across the country.

Iqbal, according to the statement, instructed the task force to organise a national AI workshop in collaboration with the Pakistan IT Industry Association (P@SHA) and other relevant industry bodies to provide a platform for dialogue between government, academia, and industry.

“It will focus on designing practical AI solutions tailored to Pakistan’s development context,” the statement read.

Last year, Iqbal inaugurated a three-day international conference on 3D printing and vacuum technology at the National Centre for Physics (NCP) at Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, calling on scientists, researchers and innovators to work tirelessly to position Pakistan at the forefront of technological advancements.

Karachi Tragedy—a reflection of national apathy

What is the likely future of Isarel-Iran war

By Ansar Mahmood Bhatti

Another tragedy has struck Karachi—a city that never sleeps, yet never seems to awaken from the nightmare of misgovernance and human suffering. A five-storey residential building collapsed like a house of cards, reducing concrete and steel to dust, and with it, burying precious human lives under the rubble. Mothers, children, elderly residents—people with dreams, memories, and hopes—were mercilessly crushed. And once again, all we are left with are rescue sirens, news flashes, hollow statements of sorrow, and the same old promise of “strict action” against those responsible.

This isn’t just the story of a building collapse; it’s the story of a system collapse. A collapse of values, governance, justice, and above all—humanity. This heart-wrenching incident speaks volumes of the sheer apathy of the concerned quarters. It screams of the poverty that shackles millions of Pakistanis, forcing them to live in crumbling, unlivable structures because they simply do not have a choice.

The truth is bitter and painful: People don’t live in such dangerous buildings by choice—they do so because poverty has left them with no options. They cannot afford repairs, renovations, or even relocation. Their rooms, their so-called homes, are more like ticking time bombs. And yet, nobody cares. There are no jobs. No opportunities. The wealth of this country remains concentrated in the hands of a select few, while the rest are left to struggle, to suffer, and to perish.

The Sindh government, as usual, remains absent when needed most. Corruption continues to rot the roots of every institution in the province. Reports abound of public funds being misused, siphoned off into the pockets of the powerful, leaving behind a trail of broken roads, overflowing gutters, and unsafe buildings. Accountability is a joke. Inspections are either never done, or signed off without a second glance. Everything is available for a price—even human life, it seems.

But let us not limit this tragedy to Sindh alone. This is the state of governance across the country. Pakistan as a whole is grappling with a systemic collapse. There is no mechanism in place to protect the common citizen. No one to listen to the cries of the poor. No government department that takes its duty as sacred. The entire structure of the state has been hijacked by individuals who are more interested in filling their own coffers than serving the people who elected them.

This country was meant to be a welfare state. An Islamic Republic, where the principles of justice, equality, and compassion were supposed to guide every policy and law. But look around—where is that vision? Where is the care for the weak, the protection for the vulnerable, the support for the broken?

In Pakistan today, the poor have no right to live, let alone dream. Their lives are expendable, their deaths mere statistics. If you are not part of the elite, the powerful, or the connected, then this country is not meant for you. It suits only the bigwigs—the untouchables who roam freely in their bulletproof vehicles, while the common man lies buried under concrete slabs.

We hear stories every day—of parents committing suicide after killing their own children because they can no longer feed them. Is this the land our founding fathers envisioned? Is this the state that was supposed to uphold the values of Islam, where helping the oppressed is a divine duty, and serving the people is an act of worship?

And yet, nobody fears God anymore. Nobody fears accountability—not in this life, nor the hereafter. Especially those in power. They act with impunity, as if they will live forever, as if there is no Day of Judgment. But there will be a day. A Day of Reckoning where each misdeed, each stolen rupee, each ignored cry for help will be brought to account. But for now, they continue to live in denial, mocking not just the people, but the very God they claim to serve.

For how long will this continue? For how long will the poor continue to suffer in silence? For how long will the corrupt thrive, while the helpless are buried under the weight of injustice? For how long will injustice be the rule and not the exception?

This tragedy in Karachi is not an isolated incident—it is a symptom of a much deeper disease. It reflects the moral decay of a nation that has forgotten its soul. A nation where human life has no value, and where suffering is just another news headline.

What we need is not just mourning and condemnation. We need a revolution of conscience. We need the rulers to remember their purpose—not to rule, but to serve. We need institutions that value human life. We need a media that doesn’t move on to the next story, but keeps asking the hard questions. And above all, we need citizens who hold the powerful accountable, who remember that silence in the face of injustice is complicity.

To the families who lost their loved ones in this tragedy, no words can ease your pain. But let this not be just another forgotten incident. Let this be a wake-up call. Let this be the moment where we as a nation say: Enough is enough.

Because if we continue to let the poor die like this—unnoticed, unprotected, uncared for—then we are all complicit in the crime. And we too, will have to answer one day—not just to history, but to God.

May God have mercy on the souls we lost. And may He awaken the dead conscience of those who still rule over the living.

No lawful way to oust PTI’s KP govt, says CM Gandapur

Gandapur

PESHAWAR, JUL 2: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur on Tuesday reiterated the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) unity and warned that any move to topple the provincial government through constitutional means would not succeed.

“No matter how hard they try, our government cannot be brought down through constitutional means,” Gandapur said. “If anyone thinks they can topple our government, I challenge them — I will quit politics.”

“Anyone who thinks they can create divisions within PTI is mistaken,” CM Gandapur told a press conference as he was flanked by the central leadership of the PTI, following a party meeting in Islamabad.

The KP chief minister claimed that the day’s meeting conveyed a clear message of unity within the party.

“Our authority and this government belong entirely to the PTI founder. Whenever he gives the order, the government can be dissolved,” he said, adding: “You cannot achieve anything constitutionally.”

‘Attack on the judiciary’

Moving forward, he said that the Constitution had been violated and PTI’s mandate had been stolen. Gandapur condemned the 26th Constitutional Amendment, calling it an “attack on the judiciary” and a “blot on Pakistan’s judicial and democratic systems.”

“May 9 was just a pretext — the real target was our party’s founder,” he added, alleging lobbying efforts against PTI and that he was pressured to make statements against the PTI founder while in custody.

Gandapur alleged that he was taken across Pakistan and asked repeatedly to quit PTI. “Our mandate was first stolen, and then our reserved seats were snatched,” he said.

Regarding the Kurram issue, he said it was an inherited problem and the road had remained open for the last four months. “Talk to your neighbours, change your policy. A neighbouring country has defeated global powers, this border is not safe,” he cautioned.

He claimed there was a plan to impose an emergency in KP. “When the PTI founder was out of jail, he spoke about negotiations.”

‘Seats snatched’

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said that PTI founder Imran Khan has always called for dialogue.

“We reviewed the letter concerning negotiations with detained leaders. He has always emphasised meaningful dialogue. Anyone eager to bring a no-confidence motion is welcome to try. Every plan will be executed only on the PTI founder’s instructions.”

He said PTI leaders were elected with the founder’s votes and that the goal of today’s meeting was to demonstrate unity. “After these developments, our seats were snatched. References were sent against our MNAs and punishments were imposed. When we requested meetings on KP’s budget, they were denied.”

Barrister Gohar asserted: “We will defend the KP government at all costs. Those wanting to bring a no-confidence motion lack the numbers. PTI’s government stands and will continue. If there are to be negotiations, concrete steps must be taken.”

For his part, PTI Secretary-General Salman Akram Raja said that February 8 was historic — people came out in huge numbers.

“This is not a political war but a fight for rights. We will fight the PTI founder’s war and victory will be ours.”

PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram demanded a judicial commission from the Chief Justice to probe the deaths of imprisoned PTI workers. “Many were released after 10 or 11 months in jail — and most came out sick.”

PTI KP President Junaid Akbar said all party leaders from the National Assembly and KP Assembly were present at the meeting. “Despite internal differences, we will act on every order of the PTI founder.”

PTI never backed of negotiations

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Core Committee hammered out a multi-pronged strategy to deal with the judges’ letter issue

Shamim Shahid

PESHAWAR: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) core committee meeting concluded with a firm decision to resist the government’s actions, vowing to give a “tough time” to the ruling coalition. Addressing a press conference after the meeting, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur challenged the federal government to attempt overthrowing his administration, asserting that his government could not be removed through legal means.

Gandapur expressed confidence in the stability of the KP government, stating that any unconstitutional move against it would be met with strong resistance. He accused the federal government of attempting to destabilize PTI-led governments but insisted that such efforts would fail.

The PTI core committee also discussed strategies to counter what it called “political victimization” and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting democratic norms. Gandapur warned that any undemocratic action against the KP government would provoke a strong public reaction.

The meeting comes amid escalating tensions between PTI and the federal government, with the opposition party accusing authorities of targeting its leaders and workers. Gandapur’s defiant stance signals PTI’s readiness for a prolonged political struggle.

Analysts suggest that PTI’s aggressive posture could lead to further political instability if the standoff continues. The party has been mobilizing its supporters nationwide, preparing for what it describes as a decisive movement against the current setup.

As the political temperature rises, all eyes remain on whether the federal government will take any action against the KP administration and how PTI’s resistance will unfold in the coming days.
