FRIA cautions against over-reliance on stock market, urges focus on industrial revival

FRIA cautions against over-reliance on stock market, urges focus on industrial revival

LAHORE, AUG 24 /DNA/ – The Ferozepur Industrial Association (FRIA) has welcomed signs of steady economic improvement but cautioned that over-reliance on stock market performance and remittances cannot substitute for genuine industrial revival.

FRIA Chairman Shahbaz Aslam, in a statement, said that Pakistan’s path to sustainable growth lies in strengthening its industrial base, boosting exports, and ensuring productive credit flows into manufacturing rather than speculative investments.

He acknowledged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s satisfaction over the stock market index crossing 148,000 points and noted that declining inflation and a surplus of USD 2.1 billion in the current account for July-June 2025 were encouraging. However, he pointed out that large-scale manufacturing remained in negative growth of 1.21 percent during 2024-25, while exports fell and the trade deficit widened to USD 26.785 billion compared to USD 22.177 billion the previous year.

“These figures clearly show that industry is under pressure. Rising credit to the private sector has unfortunately gone into the stock market rather than industrial production, which is why our exports are shrinking. Unless industry grows, no stock market surge can be called real progress,” Shahbaz Aslam remarked.

He stressed that poverty levels, at 44.7 percent as reported by the World Bank, highlight the disconnect between financial market gains and the ground realities of the economy. “The poor and vulnerable benefit only when factories expand, jobs are created, and exports rise. That requires long-term industrial policies and reduced cost of doing business,” he added.

While appreciating the rise in remittances — up from USD 2,994 million in July 2024 to USD 3,214.4 million last month — the FRIA chairman warned that dependence on overseas Pakistanis is not sustainable. He urged the government to use the IMF programme as an opportunity to reform taxation and cut wasteful expenditure, instead of squeezing industry further.

“Pakistan’s reserves have improved but remain fragile due to heavy reliance on rollovers. The only way out is industrial growth. The government must work with business associations like FRIA to chart a genuine roadmap for manufacturing-led development,” Shahbaz Aslam concluded.

The annual Pacu Jalur race on Sumatra island culminates on Sunday, with officials estimating as many as 100,000 more spectators this year because of 11-year-old Rayyan Arkan Dikha’s dance moves on the fast-moving boats.

A 20-second clip of Rayyan dancing on the boat has racked up millions of views on social media.

Sports stars including Formula One’s Alex Albon and MotoGP’s Marc Marquez imitated his moves in their own videos, swirling their hands then swinging their arms back and forth.

This year, 1.5 million spectators are expected, with a significant influx of foreigners, Riau tourism agency head Roni Rakhmat told AFP.

Officials believe revenue could jump to as much as $4.6 million on the back of increased per-person spending.

Addressing the presser, Hanif Abbasi said that both parties made the decision in the country’s best interest. “We are allies, and the leadership of both parties has shown maturity,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, PPP’s Raja Pervaiz Ashraf said that both parties had reached a seat-adjustment formula, under which the candidate from the party that finished runner-up in the previous general election would be fielded again from that particular constituency.

“We welcome the PML-N delegation and have finalised the electoral arrangements amicably,” he added.

Ashraf also thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for his role in finalising the agreement.

Several PTI lawmakers, including Omar Ayub, Shibli Faraz, Zartaj Gul and others, were convicted by an anti-terrorism courts in various May 9 cases.

Thousands of supporters of PTI founder Imran Khan stormed public property and military installations, including the Corps Commander House in Lahore, on May 9, 2023, in protest against the former premier’s arrest.

The riots — in which lives were lost — erupted after the PTI founder was taken into custody from the premises of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in a graft case.

Several PTI leaders and workers were released on bail after their arrests, while many remain behind bars.

Hashoo Group, CDA join forces for major tree planting in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD, AUG 23 /DNA/ – In alignment with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s nationwide annual monsoon Tree Plantation Campaign, themed for the first week as “One Daughter — One Tree,” PC Hospitality Division, Hashoo Group, one of Asia’s leading hospitality conglomerates, in collaboration with the Capital Development Authority (CDA), organized a large-scale tree plantation drive in the green belt of Main Constitution Avenue, Islamabad. Senior management of both organizations, along with employees, actively participated in planting a wide variety of trees, reinforcing their commitment to a greener, healthier future.

The initiative drew inspiration from the Prime Minister’s vision, particularly the themes of “One Daughter – One Tree,” “Green Canopy,” “One Tree in the Name of Every Martyr,” and “Islam and Tree Plantation.” Employees planted saplings alongside their daughters, symbolizing the nurturing bond between future generations and the environment.

A green canopy promises shade, clean air, and ecological balance, while trees planted in memory of the nation’s martyrs serve as living symbols of sacrifice.

The campaign also highlighted tree plantation as an integral part of Islamic values, where caring for nature is both an act of faith and a moral duty.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Bastien Blanc, CEO PC Hospitality – Hashoo Group, said: “Tree plantation is more than placing saplings in the soil – it is a symbol of nurturing life, growth, and future potential.

At Hashoo Group, we are deeply committed to sustainability and regenerative practices that preserve the natural beauty of Pakistan while supporting long-term tourism development. This year’s theme, One Daughter – One Tree, deeply resonates with our values.

It reminds us of the importance of nurturing both our environment and the incredible female talent across the country. Hashoo Group has long championed the empowerment of women, actively creating opportunities for them to grow, lead, and thrive within the hospitality industry.

By standing with CDA and embracing the Prime Minister’s vision, we proudly demonstrate our responsibility towards climate action and national pride. Together, we are building a greener tomorrow”

Mr. Awais Manzoor Tarar, DG Environment CDA, added: “This drive reflects the spirit of the Prime Minister’s campaign, which combines environmental responsibility with social and religious values. Every tree planted today is a step towards combating climate change and strengthening national resilience. CDA is proud to collaborate with Hashoo Group in making Islamabad greener and healthier for its citizens.”

This partnership between PC Hospitality Division, Hashoo Group, and CDA underscores the importance of unity in addressing climate change, expanding forest cover, and promoting sustainable practices.

By envisioning Pakistan’s green flag mirrored in its landscapes, the plantation drive sends a powerful message that building a resilient and eco-friendly future is a shared responsibility.=DNA

NBP blocks Pakistan Weightlifting Federation’s bank account on PSB request

NBP blocks Pakistan Weightlifting Federation’s bank account on PSB request

ISLAMABAD, AUG 23 /DNA/ – The National Bank of Pakistan (NBP), on the request of the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB), has blocked the bank account of the suspended Pakistan Weightlifting Federation (PWLF), marking the beginning of a decisive crackdown against violations in sports governance.

The PSB made it clear that this action sends a strong message: there will be zero tolerance for irregularities, corruption or misuse of Pakistan’s name in sports.

The PSB spokesperson said that the action is in line with the agenda of Director General PSB Muhammad Yasir Pirzada to ensure transparency, accountability and good governance in all sports organizations across Pakistan.

He stressed that the government’s sports policy is based on zero tolerance against malpractice, corruption and violations of law, and similar action will follow wherever irregularities are found.

The DG PSB emphasized that no body failing to meet constitutional and legal requirements will be allowed to operate under the country’s banner.

The step was taken after PSB informed NBP that the PWLF, which stands suspended by PSB, is not incorporated under Section 42 of the Companies Act 2017 and is operating in violation of national laws and regulations. Moreover, the federation has failed to comply with the Constitution of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), which requires a national body to be a separate and legally incorporated entity.

As of today, the official IWF website lists PWLF’s status as Temporarily Suspended (TS), which indicates that a member federation has provisionally lost its membership rights due to failure to fulfil obligations defined in Rule 8 of the IWF Constitution (Schedule 2 – Member in Good Standing Criteria).

The PSB further stated that PWLF was suspended during the 25th PSB Board Meeting held on July 6, 2022, based on the report of a delegate appointed pursuant to a judgment of the Lahore High Court.

The suspension was imposed due to alleged irregularities in its functioning, corrupt practices and violations of the anti-doping code. A detailed inquiry regarding the suspended office-bearers of PWLF is still ongoing.

Furthermore, according to an International Testing Agency (ITA) report, dated March 10, 2025, it was confirmed that the federation’s top officials committed Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs).

The PSB pointed out that only the sports organizations recognized or affiliated with PSB and incorporated under Section 42 of the Companies Act 2017 are entitled to regulate a sport in Pakistan, use the country’s name, or represent Pakistan internationally.

Since the PWLF did not fulfill these legal and regulatory requirements, PSB formally requested NBP to suspend its bank account (Account No. 2200026441 at Samanabad Branch, Lahore, now shifted to Allama Iqbal Town, Lahore). Following the PSB’s request, an email from NBP’s Operations Manager confirmed that the account has been debit blocked with immediate effect.

World Cup buzz: Trump reveals FIFA 2026 draw location, date

World Cup buzz: Trump reveals FIFA 2026 draw location-date

WASHINGTON, AUG 23: US President Donald Trump confirmed that the draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place in Washington, D.C., on December 5, at the Kennedy Center.

Standing alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the White House, Trump hailed the upcoming tournament as “the biggest event in sports”, while holding the iconic FIFA World Cup trophy.

The 2026 edition will be the first to feature 48 teams and will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Trump, Infantino and the trophy moment

Infantino, who has developed close ties with Trump, brought the trophy to the Oval Office for the announcement.

“Only the FIFA president, presidents of countries, and then those who win can touch it, because it’s for winners only. And since you are a winner, of course, you can as well touch it,” Infantino told Trump.

“Can I keep it? That’s a beautiful piece of gold,” Trump replied, lifting it with both hands. At one point, he appeared to fumble it before carefully setting it down on his desk.

Infantino also presented Trump with a symbolic giant ticket — Row 1, Seat 1 — for the World Cup Final, scheduled for July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Politics and football

The venue shift from Las Vegas to Washington carries political undertones. Trump has recently taken control of the Kennedy Center, calling it part of his push against “woke” culture. “Some people refer to it as the Trump-Kennedy Center, but we’re not prepared to do that quite yet, maybe in a week or so,” he remarked.

Trump also linked the announcement to his broader domestic policies, boasting of a new federal crime crackdown and deployment of National Guard troops in Washington to ensure the city is “safe for football fans.”

Putin and visas

Trump further hinted that Russian President Vladimir Putin might attend the World Cup. Holding up a photo he said was sent after their recent Alaska summit, Trump commented: “He wants to be there very badly, but he may be coming and he may not, depending on the outcome of Ukraine peace efforts.”

On visas, Trump assured most fans would face little difficulty but admitted that visitors from some countries, including Afghanistan, Haiti, and Iran, would encounter restrictions due to his administration’s travel bans.

Road to 2026

The US was named a joint host of the 2026 World Cup in 2018 during Trump’s first term. Since regaining office, Trump has spotlighted the tournament as a symbol of America’s global stature.

With the draw now confirmed in Washington, anticipation builds for the world’s biggest football event to return to North America for the first time since 1994.
