Belgian Photojournalist Cedric Gerbehaye’s Book on Kashmir Presented at France’s International Festival: Several Europeans Show Special Interest in the book

Brussels(dna)
Belgian renowned photojournalist Cedric Gerbehaye’s book on Kashmir, “Kashmir: Wait and See,” was presented at France’s “International Festival of Photography and Journalism” held in Perpignan, France.
Many Europeans paid specially attention and interest in the book on Kashmir during the festival which is also called “Visa pour l’Image”.
The book, which took eight years to produce, reveals the current realities, history, and culture of Indian-occupied Kashmir, Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan through photographs. Along with the images, detailed descriptions are provided to help people understand Jammu and Kashmir.
Photojournalist Cedric Gerbehaye also briefed the festival participants on the situation in Indian-occupied Kashmir through his photographs. Specifically, he shared images of people injured by pellet guns used by Indian troops in Indian-occupied Kashmir and those wounded by Indian military firing in villages of Azad Kashmir along the Line of Control.
During the book launch event at the festival, Chairman of the Kashmir Council EU, Ali Raza Syed, and Kashmiri leader Sardar Sadiq Khan participated while representing the Kashmiri people. Senior Hungarian journalist Andre Barcs also attended the event.
Ali Raza Syed stated on this occasion that such global festivals play a vital role in conveying the struggle of the Kashmiri people to the world. He emphasized that when words fall short, images speak volumes in their own language, conveying what speech or writing cannot. He said that displaying this pictorial book on Jammu and Kashmir at the global festival is an important means of stirring the conscience of the international community.
He added that the exhibition of this book is a significant part of public diplomacy and has achieved what politics and conventional diplomacy perhaps could not. A picture is a silent witness that transcends borders to convey the cries of the oppressed and leaves a profound impact on the world. The visual narrative of Indian-occupied Kashmir in this book reminds us that life there is not merely about passing time but a daily struggle—sometimes for survival, sometimes for preserving identity, and sometimes for freedom.
Ali Raza Syed mentioned that in the next phases, book launch events will be held in Paris, London, Geneva, Islamabad, Lahore, Muzaffarabad, and Mirpur. The book will also be sent to universities, research centers, policy-making institutions, and relevant authorities.
Senior Kashmiri leader Sardar Sadiq Khan, who resides in Belgium and participated in the festival in France, stated that the Kashmir Council EU, established under the patronage of its chairman Ali Raza Syed, provided full support to the Belgian photojournalist during the preparation of this book. He further added that the exhibition of this book at the international festival in France would have a deep impact.
It is worth noting that this year, photojournalists and artists from over 120 countries across all seven continents participated in the France’s international festival. Their cameras unveiled the realities of corners of the world that often remain hidden from mainstream news.

The project, approved by PTCL’s Board of Directors in November 2020 at a cost of $59.5 million, is expected to be ready for service by the first quarter of 2026.

Dabrowski takes ‘wild ride’ from cancer diagnosis to US Open doubles crown

New York, Gabriela Dabrowski won her second US Open women’s doubles title alongside Erin Routliffe on Friday, the culmination of a “wild ride” that began with a breast cancer diagnosis last year.

Dabrowski and Routliffe beat the top seeds Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova 6-4, 6-4 to add to their 2023 crown and avenge last year’s defeat in the Wimbledon final.

That loss came only weeks after Dabrowski returned to tennis following two surgeries and a three-month break after a biopsy revealed she had breast cancer.

The Canadian won Olympic bronze in the mixed doubles in Paris while receiving treatment and then teamed up with New Zealand’s Routliffe to win the season-ending WTA Tour Finals in Riyadh.

Routliffe had her health struggles too as she fractured a rib in the off-season as a result of excessive coughing from bronchitis. Dabrowski then suffered the same injury earlier this year and they missed a second successive French Open.

Such challenges made Friday’s crowning moment, which earned them a split of $1 million in prize money, all the more special.

“Yeah, wild ride. Cancer, broken ribs for both of us. It was crazy, honestly,” said Dabrowski. “I’m really proud of us. It was not easy.

“I think that’s a testament to our work ethic and everything that we put in on court, off the court, with each other as friends too to, you know, keep the chemistry going.

“I think it’s all culminated kind of into this moment. Yeah, I mean, I felt already really proud of us, I would say, at the end of last year in Riyadh, winning the WTA Finals. That kind of felt similar today, similar vibe.

“We have so many of our loved ones here today, and our coaching team has been phenomenal. To share it with everyone is just so special.”

American Townsend, who reached the last 16 in the singles, and Czech partner Siniakova were bidding for their third Grand Slam doubles title together, having also won this year’s Australian Open.

“Of course I wanted to win and have the trophy,” said Townsend, who plans to give her runners-up silverware an unusual purpose.

“I’m probably going to do charcuterie board on this trophy, but — that would be pretty cool, right, to be served charcuterie on a US Open platter?”
