South Africa beat England by 14 runs in rain-marred 1st T20

Cardiff, United Kingdom, Sept 11 Marco Jansen and Corbin Bosch took two wickets apiece as South Africa beat England by 14 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method in a rain-marred first T20 in Cardiff on Wednesday.
Bad weather reduced what should have been a 40-over contest at Sophia Gardens to just 12.5 in total.
England chasing a revised 69 in five overs for victory, finished on 54-5 as they failed to keep pace with a daunting run rate of nearly 14 an over against a quality attack.
Jansen (2-18) and Bosch (2-20) did the bulk of the damage in an England innings where only Jos Buttler (25) passed 20.
Earlier, several South Africa batsmen made quickfire 20s in a total of 97-5 in 7.5 overs after Brook won the toss.
South Africa captain Aiden Markram struck 28 off 14 balls, with two fours and two sixes, although he was dropped in the deep by Phil Salt.
Donovan Ferreira, the player of the match, hit three sixes in his 25 not out and Dewald Brevis made 23.
Fast bowler Luke Wood was only playing after the hosts decided against risking Jofra Archer in the wet conditions following the express quick’s four-wicket haul in England’s record 342-run win over South Africa in the third ODI at Southampton.
But Wood had opener Ryan Rickelton caught behind for a golden duck in a haul of 2-22.
“It feels like madness, but you can think about things. It was swinging about with the new ball, but you need one or two guys to make a cameo and you can reach a good score,” said Markram who led the Proteas to a 2-1 ODI series win, at the presentation ceremony.
England captain Harry Brook added: “We can’t read into that too much. We didn’t execute as well as we could have done.”
Both Salt, who holed out off the very first ball of the chase to the returning Kagiso Rabada, and Brook were out for ducks.
In between Jacob Bethell, fresh from his maiden professional century at Southampton, made seven before he skyed Jansen to cover.
Buttler kept England in the hunt before he was caught behind, off Jansen’s last ball of the fourth over.
England now needed 26 off six balls and Bosch, who dismissed Tom Banton with the opening delivery of the last over, ensured they never really got close, with South Africa going 1-0 up in this three-match series ahead of Friday’s second T20 at Old Trafford.

New French PM vows ‘profound break’ with past as protests flare

Paris, Sept 11 France’s new Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu promised a “profound break” with the past on Wednesday as he faced trying to build a government with enough parliamentary support to pull the country out of a political crisis.
Lecornu’s first day on the job coincided with street protests across France in a show of grassroots opposition to President Emmanuel Macron, which resulted in clashes with police, with one protester hospitalised after being tear-gassed.
But the protests, which gathered steam on social media under the “block everything” slogan, had an uneven impact across the country, despite turnout surpassing that of the traditional Labour Day rallies on May 1.
Altogether some 197,000 demonstrators took to the streets, while the some 80,000 officers sent to control them made around 540 arrests with 415 people taken into police custody, according to interior ministry figures,
“We want public services that work, more taxes on the rich, less for the poor, and a just distribution of wealth,” 30-year-old protester and social worker Jean-Baptiste told AFP in Paris, who like other protesters did not want to give his family name.
The president appointed Lecornu — a close Macron ally and defence minister for the past three years — late on Tuesday, only 24 hours after his predecessor Francois Bayrou lost a confidence vote in parliament over an attempt to implement austerity measures to reduce France’s debt.
Taking over from 74-year-old Bayrou, Lecornu, 39, promised to find “more creative” ways to work with opposition parties.
“We will get there,” he said during a handover ceremony.

NBA probes Beasley gambling allegations: Silver

Los Angeles, United States, Sept 11 The NBA is conducting its own probe into gambling allegations involving Malik Beasley, the free-agent guard investigated by federal officials earlier this year, league commissioner Adam Silver confirmed on Wednesday.
“I’ll only say the investigation is ongoing,” Silver said after the NBA’s board of governors meeting in New York.
“As I understand it, there’s still a federal investigation that’s ongoing of Malik Beasley as well,” Silver said. “We will address whatever is presented to us in his case.”
ESPN, citing Beasley’s attorney Steve Haney, had reported earlier Wednesday that the player was “fully cooperating” with the National Basketball Association’s investigation.
ESPN reported the probe stemmed from allegations of improper gambling on NBA games and prop bets from the 2023-24 season, when Beasley was with the Milwaukee Bucks.
ESPN reported in June that the 28-year-old was under federal investigation by the US District Attorney’s office in the Eastern District of New York.
In August, Haney told ESPN that Beasley was “no longer a target” of that federal probe which resulted in four guilty pleas related to a gambling conspiracy that involved former NBA player Jontay Porter.
However, it remained unclear whether Beasley could still face charges, with Haney telling the Detroit News last month that he has “no idea” if Beasley might still be charged with a crime.
Beasley, who signed as a free agent with Detroit in July 2024, averaged 16.3 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists over a career-high 82 games with the Pistons last season.
Other NBA stops for Beasley, the 19th pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, include Denver, Minnesota, Utah and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Gohar a key figure to seek relief for PTI, Khan but…

ISLAMABAD: Cool-headed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan is perhaps the only leader in the party who, if given the authority, could secure much-needed political space for the party and its jailed leader.

Party sources, who are aware of the Barrister’s background interactions, said that Gohar — known for his decency and softness — enjoys a rare level of respect across political and institutional circles, which positions him as a potential bridge-builder at a time when the PTI faces mounting challenges. His clean image, professional background, and non-confrontational approach make him acceptable to stakeholders who remain reluctant to engage directly with the PTI.

“Although he remains a target of the party’s social media and has even been declared a ‘Ghaddar’ (traitor), his loyalty to Khan is unquestionable,” said a source.

However, it is pointed out that only Barrister Gohar can play a decisive role if he is given clear authority and political space by Imran Khan himself.

Until now, the former prime minister has kept tight control over party affairs from behind the bars, leaving little room for independent decision-making by other PTI leaders.

“Barrister Gohar could become the channel of communication with both the government and the establishment, but his role depends entirely on whether Imran empowers him to act on his behalf,” a senior party source noted.

Imran chose Gohar for the trusted position of acting Chairman of the PTI in 2023. Unlike other PTI leaders known for their fiery rhetoric, Gohar has maintained a measured approach in his public statements, carefully balancing party demands with a tone of decency. This demeanor has made his image good even for institutions that have often been at odds with the PTI’s leadership style.

What sets Gohar apart in the current political landscape is his unusual acceptability to both government and military establishments — a rarity among PTI leadership. This standing was evident when none other than Imran confirmed Gohar’s meeting with the army chief.

He is known within the party and beyond for his non-confrontational politics and has been an advocate of dialogue. Gohar is also opposed to the anti-army campaigns run by PTI’s social media and the party’s foreign chapters.

However, despite his position as chairman, Gohar’s ability to make decisive moves remains constrained by his dependence on Imran Khan for authority. The jailed leader continues to exercise complete influence over party affairs, with Gohar frequently visiting Adiala Jail to seek guidance on strategic decisions.

Even otherwise, the party’s top committees — the core committee and the political committee — also have no authority to make decisions.

This limitation of the chairman and the committees has been demonstrated repeatedly on issues ranging from dialogue to internal party politics.

The clip was later edited to include a speech by Imran.

Additionally, the words “Imran Khan” were digitally added to Sharma’s monologue.

The episodes can be viewed in full here, where Sharma’s clip has been taken from the time-stamp 1:57.
