PIA engineering dept faces loss of over Rs22bn, audit reveals

PIA engineering dept faces loss of over Rs22bn

ISLAMABAD, SEPT 13: The Auditor General of Pakistan (AGP) has uncovered losses exceeding Rs22 billion in Pakistan International Airlines’ engineering division.

According to the audit report, over Rs14 billion of the loss has been linked to grounded aircraft. The financial shortfall resulted from delays in maintenance checks and failure to dispose of faulty engines in time. The fleet included six Boeing 777 aircraft and two ATR-72 aircraft acquired on lease.

The Boeing aircraft remained grounded from 11 March 2020 to 1 March 2021. The report also highlighted an additional Rs6 billion loss due to engines of 25 other permanently grounded aircraft.

An estimated Rs3 billion was separately lost in parking charges paid to the Civil Aviation Authority for these idle aircraft.

Although a Departmental Accounts Committee (DAC) meeting was scheduled for January 2025, it was not convened.

Mourning Nepalis hope protest deaths will bring change

Mourning Nepalis hope protest deaths will bring change

KATHMANDU, SEPT 13: Grieving families of those killed in Nepal’s anti-corruption demonstrations said they hope the deaths will not be in vain, as the protesters’ choice of interim prime minister took charge Saturday.

Among the dead was 30-year-old Santosh Bishwakarma, one of at least 51 people killed in two days of chaos this week— the worst unrest since the end of a decade-long civil war and the abolition of the monarchy in 2008.

His widow Amika, also 30, her eyes swollen with grief, recalled his “ultimate dream” to “die having contributed to the nation”.

Santosh was shot dead on Monday during the first wave of protests, led by the youth-driven “Gen Z” movement.

A temporary social media ban sparked the demonstrations, tipping longstanding frustration over entrenched corruption and economic malaise into wider anger.

“He used to say he wouldn’t die like a dog,” Amika told AFP in her modest Kathmandu home, clutching a framed photo of her late husband.

“His dream was to make Nepal known to the world — and he did.”

‘Just equality’
KP Sharma Oli, the 73-year-old leader of the Communist Party, quit as prime minister a day after Santosh’s death and as protesters torched parliament, ending his fourth term in the post.

On Friday, former chief justice Sushila Karki was sworn into office to lead a six-month transition to elections.

Thousands of young activists had used the app Discord to debate the next steps — and name Karki as their choice of next leader.

But Amika, now raising her 10-year-old son Ujwal and seven-year-old daughter Sonia alone, fears for the future.

“My husband would have done everything to fulfil their dreams, even at the cost of his life,” she said.

“But how am I supposed to manage everything on my own? He sacrificed his life for the country, and I hope the new government will help me.”

Family friend Solan Rai, 42, said he believed the protests marked a turning point.

“I hope we finally see real change this time,” he said, adding that the anger had been “more intense than anything we’ve seen before”.

The World Bank said a “staggering” 82% of Nepal’s workforce is in informal employment—among the highest rates in the world. Its GDP per capita stands at just $1,447.

At Kathmandu’s Pashupatinath temple on Friday, hundreds gathered for mass cremations.

Families wept over the bodies of loved ones, including young men shot dead in the clashes.

“I hope there is some justice— and our people finally get the change they so desperately seek,” said Ratna Maharjan, grieving for her son, breaking down into tears.

One mother refused to release her son’s body, wrapped in a shroud, clinging to him on the temple steps.

Nearby, police officers laid garlands of marigolds on their fallen colleague as a bugler played over the smoke-filled riverbank.

Amika’s plea was simple.

“What we seek isn’t too much to ask— just equality,” she said. “So the rich don’t thrive while the poor languish.”

FO confirms PM Shehbaz’s participation in Arab-Muslim moot on Israeli strikes in Qatar

PM Shehbaz’s participation in Arab-Muslim moot

ISLAMABAD, SEPT 13: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was confirmed on Saturday to attend a summit of Arab and Muslim leaders in Qatar to denounce Israel’s attack on Hamas officials in Doha and to show solidarity with the Gulf state.

Qatar said earlier today it would hold the emergency moot in light of the recent developments in the region. Foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said Monday’s meeting would consider “a draft resolution on the Israeli attack on the state of Qatar” to be drafted on Sunday at a ministerial meeting.

Israel targeted Hamas leaders on Tuesday in strikes on the Qatari capital, killing five Hamas members and a Qatari security officer. The attack drew widespread international condemnation, including from Gulf monarchies allied with the United States, Israel’s main backer.

Al-Ansari was quoted as saying by the official QNA news agency that the summit reflected “broad Arab and Islamic solidarity with the State of Qatar in the face of Israel’s cowardly aggression … and the categorical rejection of Israel’s state terrorism”.

Confirming PM Shehbaz’s participation, the Foreign Office (FO) said in a statement posted on X that Pakistan was a co-sponsor of the summit. It added that the Israeli attempts to occupy Gaza, expand settlement activities in the occupied West Bank and forcibly displace Palestinians were also part of the decision to hold the summit.

“Heads of states and governments and senior officials from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation member countries are expected to participate in the summit. The summit will be preceded by the preparatory meeting of the foreign ministers on September 14, 2025. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar will participate in the preparatory session,” the FO said.

The FO reiterated that Pakistan accorded high importance to its relations with Qatar and strongly condemned Israeli aggression against the country and other regional states.

Among the leaders attending will be Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will also be in Doha, but his presence at the meeting is yet to be confirmed.

Analysts say the summit is meant to send Israel a clear signal.

Qatar, which hosts the largest US base in the region, plays a mediation role in the Gaza war alongside the United States and Egypt.

The Israeli strikes were “seen across the Gulf as an unprecedented violation of sovereignty and an attack on diplomacy itself”, Andreas Krieg of King’s College London said, adding the summit signalled that “such aggression can’t be normalised”.

“The goal is to draw clear red lines and end the sense in Israel that it can act with impunity,” he said. “Expect a sharper stance on Palestine and a harder edge on Israeli actions.”

Trump hosts Qatar’s PM
Earlier, US President Donald Trump held dinner with the Qatari prime minister in New York on Friday.

Separately, Trump expressed annoyance about the strike in a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and sought to assure the Qataris that such attacks would not happen again.

Trump and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani were joined by a top Trump adviser, US special envoy Steve Witkoff.

“Great dinner with POTUS. Just ended,” Qatar’s deputy chief of mission, Hamah Al-Muftah, said on X.

The White House confirmed the dinner had taken place but offered no details. The session followed an hour-long meeting that al-Thani had at the White House on Friday with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

A source briefed on the meeting said they discussed Qatar’s future as a mediator in the region and defence cooperation in the wake of the Israeli strikes against Hamas in Doha.

Trump said he was unhappy with Israel’s strike, which he described as a unilateral action that did not advance US or Israeli interests.

On Bannu visit with COAS, PM says Afghanistan must choose between terrorists or Pakistan

PM says Afghanistan must choose between terrorists or Pakistan

BANNU: Reiterating his resolve to eliminate terrorism from the country, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday said that Afghanistan must choose between siding with terrorists or standing with Pakistan, warning there would be zero tolerance for ambiguity on the issue.

Addressing an important high-level meeting on terrorism during his visit to Bannu in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) along with Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, the premier said Pakistan would continue to deliver a firm response to terrorism and those facilitating Indian proxies.

PM Shehbaz made it clear that anyone speaking in favour of foreign elements or acting as their facilitator would be treated as their “instrument and would be answered in the same language they understood”.

Afghan nationals are involved in terrorist incidents in Pakistan, he said, adding that illegal Afghan residents would soon be expelled.

Pakistan has hosted Afghans for more than four decades, from the Soviet invasion to the 2021 Taliban takeover. Some refugees were born and raised there, while others have been awaiting relocation to third countries.

However, the government, citing a rise in militant attacks and insurgent campaigns, launched a crackdown in 2023 to evict Afghans. More than 1.2 million Afghans have since been forced to return, including over 443,000 this year alone, according to the United Nations.

The premier went on to say that the people, the state, and the armed forces of Pakistan stood united like a fortified wall against Indian proxies, rejecting politics and misleading narratives on the matter.

During his visit, PM Shehbaz also inquired after injured security personnel at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) Bannu. Meanwhile, the Peshawar Corps Commander gave a detailed briefing on the regional security situation.

According to security sources, masterminds and facilitators of terrorism are based in Afghanistan and are being supported by India.

BYC’s Mahrang Baloch granted bail by Karachi ATC in ‘terrorism and sedition’ case

BYC’s Mahrang Baloch granted bail

KARACHI, SEPT 13: Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) chief Dr Mahrang Baloch on Saturday was granted bail by an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Karachi in a case pertaining to terrorism and sedition charges from October last year.

The BYC chief is currently in police custody on physical remand, which was extended for 15 more days by an ATC in Quetta on Thursday. Mahrang was arrested on March 22 on allegations of “attacking” the Quetta Civil Hospital and “inciting people to violence” and has been remanded several times.

According to a copy of today’s court order available with Dawn.com, the state prosecutor “vehemently” opposed the court granting bail to the BYC chief because the allegations against Mahrang are of a serious nature and the investigating officer collected sufficient evidence which could be presented in court.

Last October, Mahrang was booked in a terrorism case as a first information report (FIR) was registered by Malir district’s Quaidabad police on the complaint of a local resident who claimed that the BYC leader was inciting violence in his area.

“She (prosecutor) further argued that the accused has incited hatred against state institutions, and spread seditious material with [the] intent to cause public unrest. Therefore, [the] accused is not entitled for the concession of bail,” the order read.

The order added that the complainant in the October FIR did not produce any independent witnesses to corroborate the allegations, nor did he appear in court despite the investigating officer (IO) being instructed to produce him.

“Moreover, during [the] investigation at the time of visiting place of incident, neither [the] IO called any private/independent witness from [the] locality nor made [any] query from area people regarding alleged incident,” the order read.

The order added that the IO submitted a report to declare Mahrang an absconder in the case, but the defence counsel submitted the Quetta ATC’s remand order, which showed that she is in police custody.

“Moreover, FIR regarding alleged incident was registered against the applicant/accused on October 11, 2024, while [the IO] submitted [a report] before [the] … Anti-Terrorism Courts Karachi Division on August 16, after the delay of 10 months and in this regard IO has not furnished reason why he submitted [a report] against the accused after delay of 10 months,” the order read.

“In view of the above, I have come to the conclusion that [the] applicant/accused has made out her case for further enquiry,” it added, quoting the ATC judge. “Therefore, I hereby admit the applicant/accused on bail subject to furnishing solvent surety in the sum of Rs100,000 in the like amount to the satisfaction of this court.”

Mahrang was taken into custody under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) — a law that empowers authorities to arrest and detain individuals suspected of posing a threat to public order — and remains in custody.

Following her detention under the MPO, cases were also registered against her and other BYC leaders under different sections of the Anti-Terrorism Act and the Pakistan Penal Code.

The BYC is a Baloch advocacy group working against enforced disappearances since 2018.

35 Indian-sponsored terrorists killed, 12 soldiers martyred in KP operations: ISPR

35 Indian-sponsored terrorists killed

ISLAMABAD: At least 12 soldiers were martyred and 35 terrorists belonging to the Indian proxy Fitna al-Khawarij were killed in two separate operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) from September 10-13, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement on Saturday.

According to the military’s media wing, the engagements took place between September 10 and 13.

In Bajaur, security forces launched an intelligence-based operation (IBO) after reports of militant presence. “Our troops effectively engaged the location, and after an intense fire exchange, 22 terrorists were killed,” the communique read.

“In a separate operation in South Waziristan, 13 more militants were killed,” the military’s media wing said, adding that at least 12 soldiers also embraced martyrdom during an intense fire exchange.

“Weapons and ammunition were also recovered from Indian-sponsored terrorists, who remained actively involved in numerous terrorist activities in these areas,” it added.

The statement further said intelligence reports confirmed the involvement of Afghan nationals in the attacks.

“Intelligence reports have unequivocally confirmed the physical involvement of Afghan nationals in these heinous acts. Besides, use of Afghan soil against Pakistan by Fitna al Khawarij terrorists continues to remain a grave point of concern,” it added.

“Pakistan expects the Afghan government to uphold its responsibilities and deny use of its soil for terrorist activities against Pakistan,” the ISPR statement further read.

The military said sanitisation operations are continuing in the affected areas to eliminate remaining threats, stressing that sacrifices of soldiers further strengthen our resolve to eradicate terrorism.

“Sanitisation operations are being conducted to eliminate any other Indian sponsored Kharji found in the area, as the security forces of Pakistan are determined to wipe out the menace of Indian-sponsored terrorism from the country, and such sacrifices of our brave men further strengthen our resolve,” the statement concluded.

Pakistan has witnessed a surge in cross-border terror incidents since Taliban rulers returned to Afghanistan in 2021, particularly in the bordering provinces of KP and Balochistan.

The country witnessed a sharp escalation in militant attacks in August, with incidents surging by 74% compared to July, according to a report by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS).

The Islamabad-based think tank recorded 194 fatalities from militant attacks during the month.
