President Zardari strongly condemns cross-border attacks from Afghan territory

ISLAMABAD, OCT 15: /DNA/ – President Asif Ali Zardari has strongly condemned the unprovoked cross-border attacks launched from Afghan territory on Pakistani border posts in the Spin Boldak area of Balochistan and the Kurram sector of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The President termed the attacks a blatant violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and an unacceptable act of aggression. He commended the professionalism and valour of Pakistan’s Armed Forces for effectively repulsing the assaults and defending the country’s borders.

President Zardari observed that the Afghan Taliban regime remains in constant violation of the Doha Accord by providing safe sanctuaries to terrorist groups that continue to attack regional countries, thereby destabilising the entire region including Pakistan. He further noted that the regime has failed to establish a broad-based and representative government in Afghanistan and continues to monopolise power to the exclusion of other political and ethnic groups.

The President called upon the authorities in Kabul to ensure that Afghan soil is not used for acts of terrorism or hostility against Pakistan. He emphasised that such provocations undermine regional peace and the long-standing bonds of brotherhood between the peoples of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The President reaffirmed that Pakistan desires peaceful, cooperative relations with all its neighbours, but any act of aggression will be met with a firm and resolute response.

RAWALPINDI, OCT 15: Former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has directed newly elected Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi to collaborate with all relevant stakeholders in developing an effective and comprehensive strategy to combat terrorism in the province.

“I once again direct the new Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to engage with all stakeholders to formulate an effective and comprehensive strategy against terrorism so that lasting and effective peace can be established in the province, and as a result, the economy can be revived,” Imran said in his facilitating message to CM-elect Afridi on X.

The jailed PTI founder said that the people of KP have given his party a mandate, adding that they will never go against the interests of the people of Pakistan and the province.

The former prime minister added that they are answerable to the people of KP, not to someone else.

Calling Afridi his “opening batsman”, the PTI founder directed the CM-elect to “play with confidence”.

“I want to send a special message to Sohail Afridi that he is my opening batsman, and therefore, he should play with confidence.”

He congratulated all members of the KP assembly on the “successful and smooth completion” of the change in the government.

“The way the members of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa stood firm on their ideology and voted for my nominated Chief Minister [Sohail Afridi] without any hesitation is commendable,” Imran added.

The former premier also paid tribute to outgoing CM Ali Amin Gandapur for smoothly stepping down from his position on his directives.

“I also pay tribute to Ali Amin Gandapur, who, without any reluctance, resigned not once but three times. This smooth transition is proof that the ideology of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf reigns supreme in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.”

PTI-nominated Afridi was elected as CM on Monday as he is set to replace Gandapur as KP CM after the party-backed lawmakers voted in his favour amid the opposition’s boycott.

Afridi secured 90 votes, whereas Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl’s (JUI-F) Maulana Lutfur Rehman, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Sardar Shahjehan Yousaf, and Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) Arbab Zarak Khan got no votes at all as their members staged a walkout from the session.

Speaking on the assembly floor, Afridi touched upon the pressing issue of terrorism as the KP has faced the brunt of incidents along with Balochistan, and said that where there is terrorism, the solution is to take the elders of that area into confidence.

He said that where there is terrorism, the solution is to take the elders of that area into confidence.

“Where you are saying there is terrorism, take the local representatives, parliamentarians, people, and elders into confidence,” he said while calling for Pakistan’s Afghan policy to be reviewed.

Petroluem prices expected to drop by up to Rs6.10 per litre from tomorrow

Petroluem prices expected to drop by up to Rs6.10 per litre from tomorrow

ISLAMABAD, OCT 15: Petroleum prices are likely to decrease from October 16, with petrol expected to become cheaper by up to Rs6.10 per litre, The News reported on Wednesday citing sources in the petroleum sector.

According to the industry’s price calculations submitted to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) is likely to be reduced by 97 paisa per litre, while kerosene may see a cut of Rs2.75 per litre.

Light diesel oil (LDO) is also expected to drop by Rs1.64 per litre, sources said.

They said that OGRA has finalised its summary for the revision of petroleum product prices and forwarded it to the Petroleum Division.

On October 1, the federal government hiked the price of petrol by Rs4.07 per litre. Petrol is currently being sold at Rs268.68 per litre.

Similarly, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) was also raised by Rs4.04, bringing it to Rs276. 18.

Petrol powers small vehicles, rickshaws, and bikes, making price hikes especially hard on middle- and lower-income households who depend on it for daily commuting.

In contrast, a substantial portion of the transport sector depends on high-speed diesel. Its price is considered inflationary due to its widespread use in trucks, buses, trains, and farm machinery, such as tractors and tube wells.

Pakistan Army 'responds fiercely' to unprovoked Afghan aggression in Kurram

KURRAM, OCT 14: Afghan Taliban and Fitna al-Khawarij opened unprovoked fire on Pakistani positions along the border in Kurram district, security sources said on Tuesday.

According to the sources, Pakistani troops gave a strong and immediate response, targeting the firing positions of the Afghan Taliban and Fitna-e-Khawarij with intense retaliatory fire.

The exchange inflicted severe damage on multiple Taliban posts, while flames were seen rising from their positions, the sources added.

The sources further confirmed that a Taliban tank was destroyed in the counter-fire, forcing the attackers to abandon their posts and flee from the area.

Security sources reaffirmed that Pakistan’s forces remain on high alert and are fully capable of defending every inch of the country’s borders against any aggression.

Meanwhile, sources further said that the Pakistan armed forces destroyed another Afghan Taliban post and tank position in Kurram sector, adding that Taliban forces fled, leaving several bodies at post.

This marks the second incident in recent days involving cross-border aggression by the Afghan Taliban and Fitna al-Khawarij. On the night of October 11, Afghan forces had opened unprovoked fire at multiple border points, including Angoor Adda, Bajaur, and Kurram, with similar attacks also reported in Dir, Chitral, Baramcha, and other areas along the Durand Line.

Pakistani forces retaliated swiftly, striking Afghanistan’s border posts and terrorist hideouts across multiple border points overnight, destroying several Afghan posts, and killing more than 200 Afghan Taliban and affiliated terrorists, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

In a statement, the military’s media wing said that Pakistani forces carried out “precision fires and strikes, as well as physical raids, directed against Taliban camps and posts, terrorist training facilities and support networks operating from Afghan territory”.

“Multiple Taliban locations were destroyed all along the border; 21 hostile positions on the Afghan side of the border were also briefly physically captured and multiple terrorist training camps, used to plan and facilitate attacks against Pakistan, were rendered inoperative,” it said, adding that 23 soldiers embraced martyrdom while defending the motherland.

Heightened tensions
Islamabad and Kabul are witnessing heightened tensions amid the interim Afghan government’s reluctance to act against terrorist groups, operating from Afghan soil, in the backdrop of rising terror attacks in Pakistan.

The country has witnessed a surge in cross-border terror incidents since Taliban rulers returned to Afghanistan in 2021, particularly in the bordering provinces of KP and Balochistan.

The two nations share a porous border spanning around 2,500 kilometres with several crossing points which hold significance as a key element of regional trade and relations between the people across both sides of the fence.

However, the issue of terrorism remains a key issue for Pakistan, which has urged Afghanistan to prevent its soil from being used by groups such as the TTP to carry out attacks inside the former’s territory.

Islamabad’s reservations have also been confirmed by a report submitted to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) by the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, which has revealed a nexus between Kabul and the TTP, with the former providing logistical, operational, and financial support to the latter.

Pakistan has hosted Afghans for more than four decades, from the Soviet invasion through the Taliban takeover in 2021. Some refugees were born and raised in Pakistan; others are still waiting for third-country relocation.

According to media reports, following a 2023 crackdown on undocumented Afghans and those exceeding legal status, more than 554,000 Afghans have been returned since April 2025 under Pakistan’s Illegal Foreigners Repatriation Plan — including around 145,000 in August.

According to security sources, masterminds and facilitators of terrorism are based in Afghanistan and are being supported by India.

Moscow calls for Kabul, Islamabad to show restraint

MOSCOW, OCT 14 /DNA/  – Russia’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s comment regarding the escalation on the Afghan-Pakistani border

We have been following with concern the reports of a new escalation along the Afghan-Pakistani border on October 10–11. Kabul and Islamabad have provided differing interpretations of the nature of the clashes and the reasons behind the escalation.

Exchanges of airstrikes and gunfire have effectively spread across the entire border area, including the Pashtun tribal belt. There have been casualties among military personnel on both sides.

According to the latest information, the situation is now stabilising. We welcome this development.

We call on Kabul and Islamabad to exercise restraint and forbearance, and to address any disagreements through political and diplomatic means.

We look forward to the resumption of constructive dialogue between Afghanistan and Pakistan – two countries friendly to Russia – including on counterterrorism and regional security issues.

Pakistan finance minister sees staff deal on $1.2 billion IMF payout this week

Pakistan finance minister sees staff deal on $1.2 billion IMF payout this week

By Karin Strohecker and Andrea Shalal

WASHINGTON, OCT 14: Pakistan is poised to sign a preliminary deal on a review of its loan programme with the International Monetary Fund this week, the country’s finance minister said, a key step required to pave the way for another $1.24 billion payout from the lender.

An IMF mission left Pakistan last week without signing a so-called staff level agreement on the second review of the Washington-based lender’s $7 billion Extended Fund Facility and the first one on its $1.4 billion Resilience and Sustainability Facility agreed in 2024 to shore up the economy after a severe financial crisis.

“The mission was on the ground for a couple of weeks, we had very constructive dialogue with them around the quantitative benchmarks, the structural benchmarks, and we’ve been having some follow-up discussions,” Muhammad Aurangzeb told Reuters during an interview on the sidelines of the IMF World Bank annual meeting.

“During the course of this week, we’re hoping that we can get the SLA done.”

Countries under IMF lending programmes need to pass regular reviews, which – once signed off by the Fund’s executive board, trigger a payment of the next tranche of IMF funding.

The IMF programme agreed in September 2024 helped shore up then-cash-strapped Pakistan’s $370 billion economy that was engulfed in an economic crisis with inflation spiralling to record highs, a rapidly depreciating currency and a bulging external deficit.

Aurangzeb expected the government would launch a green Panda bond – the first one denominated in Chinese yuan for Pakistan – before year-end and return to international markets next year with a bond sale of at least $1 billion, though details were still to be decided.

“Euro, dollar, Sukuk, Islam Sukuk – we’re keeping our options open,” he said.

Meanwhile the privatisation push – part of a long-delayed sale of state assets under an economic reform and fiscal stabilisation agenda – was expected to gain traction in the fiscal year to end-June after disappointing results last year.

“This is something which is very important as part of our economic roadmap,” he said.

Pakistan was also making progress on the sale of three power distribution companies and national carrier Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

“We are quite hopeful,” Aurangzeb said, citing prospects for qualified bidders for PIA after lucrative routes to Europe and Britain were opened, which made it “a very good proposition for the investors.”

The transaction would mark the country’s first major privatization in about two decades. A previous attempt collapsed last year after a single lowball offer was received, but the government has since drawn interest from five domestic business groups including Airblue, Lucky Cement, investment firm Arif Habib and military-backed Fauji Fertilizer.
Final bids are expected later this year.
