Trump Xi meeting: What was actually discussed between world’s major economies

Trump and Xi reach agreement on rare earths, soybeans, tariffs

DNA

U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held their first in-person meeting in six years on Thursday, October 30, in the South Korean port city of Busan.

This marks a significant moment in efforts to ease the escalating tensions between the two major powers of the world.

The 100-minute summit, held on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, where extensive issues like trade tariffs, rare earth minerals, fentanyl precursor chemicals, semiconductors, and stances on Ukraine have been discussed.

Both sides confirmed progressive talks and promised to continue talks on these matters.

Following the meeting, Trump called these discussions “amazing,” responding to the reporters aboard Air Force One and claimed that the leaders “agreed to almost everything.”

Key Takeaways

Major takeaways of the meeting of the two significant economies are:

Tariff reduction and rare earth breakthrough

The most tangible outcome is the mutual agreement on the reduction of tariffs and rare earth elements. Trump announced a reduction of tariffs on Chinese goods from 57% to 47%. In exchange, China pledged to lift restrictions on exports of rare earth elements. These rare Earths are highly significant for advanced technologies including electric vehicles (EVs), smartphones, and most importantly defense equipment.

While discussing this, Trump mentioned, “All of the rare earth has been settled.”

“That roadblock is gone now,” he added.

Previously, China put strict restrictions on the export of rare earth minerals as Beijing controls 80% of global earth mining and 90% of processing in response to US new tariffs.

China to resume U.S. soybean purchases

During the meeting, China also announced resuming large-scale purchases of U.S. soybeans. Trump stated, “This has been one of the most contentious issues of the trade war.”

“We’re bringing back business to our farmers,” he added.

This announcement is welcomed by American farmers who have been hit hard by years of retaliatory tariffs.

Fentanyl and chip exports

The U.S. president stated Xi had agreed to “work very hard” to cease the flow of chemicals used in manufacturing fentanyl. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid fueling a deadly crisis across U.S. cities.

In response to that, Trump as a goodwill gesture reduced the tariff on Chinese products related to fentanyl from 20% to 10%.

Another positive outcome is the semiconductor exports and Nvidia’s sales to China. Trump asserted that the U.S. would continue to limit China’s access to the company’s most advanced “Blackwell” AI chips but signified openness to enabling the sale of less-sensitive components.

No discussion on Taiwan, cooperative stance on Ukraine

Despite growing tension, both political leaders didn’t discuss Taiwan during the meeting. However, both agreed to “worth together to see if we can get anything” related to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Xi maintained a warmer tone during his opening remarks and described Trump as “a friend of the Chinese people,” and further maintained a conciliatory tone by stating that two nations are “partners, not rivals.”

Chinese state media also reassured the President’s statement, saying the talks “opened a new chapter of mutual respect and cooperation.”

Trump shared that he is scheduled to visit China in April 2026, with Xi also lined up a reciprocal visit to the U.S. later in the year.

“We have a deal,” Trump said, adding that “every year we’ll negotiate a deal.”

Strategic importance of Azerbaijan in transport connectivity

By Ansar Mahmood Bhatti

Today, Azerbaijan is an attractive country in the world. The creation of political and economic stability, favorable business and investment environment ensure the realization of any project in the country. The current investment policy and successful business environment do not only attract local investors but also, attract foreign investors.

The dynamic development gained in all spheres of public life in the country in recent years has significantly increased the geopolitical significance of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Along with all of these, important tasks such as active participation in socio-economic processes in the global economic space, effective access to foreign markets, and the formation of a competitive national industry have become a necessity. The issues such as globalization, rapid integration, and sustainable development, etc., which are typical for the modern era, have also specific importance for the country.

Azerbaijan is one of the main initiators of the billion invested in projects, and the projects have been successfully completed. These projects include East-West”, “North-South” transport corridors, Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil, Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipeline, one of the priority energy projects for the European Union (Shah Deniz-2, the expansion of the South Caucasus pipeline), Southern Gas Corridor.

Besides the infrastructures of state economy, such as energy, communication, education, and health care, the transport also plays an important role for achieving social, economic, foreign policy and other public priorities by ensuring initial demands of community life.

The country is one of the transport and logistical hubs within Eurasia. Efforts are underway to develop international transportation corridors and establish modern infrastructure. The opening of the East-West and North-South corridors has created new economic and transportation opportunities.

Azerbaijan closely cooperates with countries located along the corridor in an effort to promote the Middle Corridor. The mentioned Corridor offers a reliable and secure route linking China and Central Asia with Europe through Azerbaijan. Since 2022, cargo traffic along the Middle Corridor through Azerbaijan has increased by nearly 90 percent, with transit times considerably reduced.

Among the new projects, the importance of the Zangezur corridor should also be highlighted. This project was initiated by Azerbaijan and gained prominence after its victory in the Second Karabakh War. Thus, recent agreements connecting mainland Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic are expected to expand transit capabilities for international transportation further.

In this context, the Zangezur Corridor will soon become an essential segment of the Middle Corridor, along with the North-South Corridor, thereby fostering peace, multilateral cooperation, and benefiting Azerbaijan’s neighboring countries to the east, west, north, and south.

As part of Azerbaijan’s focused policy objectives, concerted efforts are underway to bolster both the development of domestic transport infrastructure and the transformation of the nation into a Eurasian transport hub. Highways situated along international transport corridors within Azerbaijan are undergoing reconstruction to meet the highest available standards. Moreover, significant initiatives such as transitioning from direct to alternating current, conducting comprehensive infrastructure overhauls, modernizing the railway traffic structure, and enhancing control systems are currently in progress within the railway sector.

Petroleum prices expected to rise by up to Rs2.34 per litre from Nov 1

Petrol may reach Rs264.50; diesel Rs276.80 as per preliminary calculations

ISLAMABAD: Petroleum prices are expected to rise by up to Rs2.34 per litre from November 1 for the next fortnight, driven by swings in global oil markets and the impact of recent US sanctions on major Russian producers.

Preliminary calculations for the first 12 days of the pricing cycle suggest petrol may increase by Rs1.48 per litre and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs1.38. Kerosene could see a larger jump of Rs2.34 per litre, while light diesel oil (LDO) may edge up by Re0.49.

If current trends hold, consumer prices from November 1 would be around Rs264.50 per litre for petrol, Rs276.80 for HSD, Rs184.05 for kerosene and Rs163.25 for LDO. Final figures will be set on the evening of October 31 after a review of full-fortnight import and exchange-rate data.

In line with fluctuations in the international fuel market, the federal government earlier this month reduced the price of petrol by Rs5.66 per litre for the fortnight.

According to a notification issued by the Finance Division, petrol was priced at Rs263.02 per litre. The price of high-speed diesel (HSD) was also reduced by Rs1.39 to Rs275.41 per litre.

Similarly, the price of kerosene oil was cut by Rs3.26 to Rs181.71 per litre. The government had set the price of light diesel oil at Rs162.76 per litre for the fortnight.

Petrol is mainly used in private transportation, small vehicles, rickshaws, and two-wheelers. Higher fuel prices significantly impact the budgets of the members of the middle and lower-middle classes, who primarily consume petrol for commuting.

On the other hand, a significant portion of the transport sector relies on high-speed diesel.

Its price is considered inflationary since it is predominantly used in heavy goods transport vehicles, trucks, buses, trains, and agricultural machinery such as tractors, tube wells, and threshers. The consumption of high-speed diesel particularly contributes to the increased prices of vegetables and other food items.

Deadliest police operation in Brazil kills 132

Deadliest police operation in Brazil kills 132

BRASILIA: The deadliest police operation in Brazil’s history killed at least 132 people, officials said on Wednesday, after Rio de Janeiro residents lined a street with dozens of corpses collected overnight, a week ahead of global climate events in the city.

The tally from the Rio public defender’s office was more than double the death toll released on Tuesday, when state authorities reported at least 64 dead, including four police officers. The raids were targeting a major drug gang, the state government said.

Rio Governor Claudio Castro said the initial tally had only counted bodies processed in the public morgue.

Penha residents who went looking for lost relatives had collected many of the corpses from a forested area behind their neighborhood, according to people at the scene, where more than 70 of the bodies were lined up in the middle of the street.

“I just want to take my son out of here and bury him,” said Taua Brito, a mother of one of those killed, surrounded by weeping mourners and onlookers on either side of the long row of bodies, some of which were covered with sheets or bags.

Governor Castro said he was certain those dead from the operation were criminals, as much of the gunfire was in a wooded area. “I don’t think anyone would be walking in the forest on the day of the conflict,” he told reporters.

“The only real victims were the police officers,” he said.

The police operation came days before Rio hosts global events related to the United Nations climate summit known as COP30, including the C40 global summit of mayors tackling climate change and British Prince William’s Earthshot Prize.

Rio has hosted several global events over the past decade, including the 2016 Olympics, the 2024 G20 summit and the BRICS summit in July, without violence on the scale seen on Tuesday.

The Rio state government said the operation was its largest ever to target the Comando Vermelho gang, which controls the drug trade in several favelas – poor and densely populated settlements woven through the city’s hilly oceanside terrain.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who landed in Brasilia late on Tuesday from a trip to Malaysia, has yet to comment on the raids.

He met with Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and cabinet members on Wednesday to discuss the matter, his office said. Lula’s justice minister said on Tuesday the government had not received any request for support from state authorities.

Several civil society groups criticized the heavy casualties of the military-style raid. The UN Human Rights office said it adds to a trend of extreme lethal consequences of police raids in Brazil’s marginalized communities.

EU to send large election observer team to Bangladesh: envoy

EU to send large election observer team to Bangladesh: envoy

DHAKA, OCT 29 (BSS/APP): The European Union (EU) plans to deploy a large delegation of election observers to Bangladesh for the upcoming general election, scheduled for the first half of February, marking the first such mission since 2008.

EU Ambassador in Dhaka Michael Miller made the announcement during a meeting with Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna here today, said the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.

Miller said the EU observer mission had still to be finally confirmed, but could comprise between 150 and 200 members, with some arriving about six weeks before the election and others joining a week prior to polling day.

“This would be the first time since 2008 that the EU is sending such a full-fledged election observer team to Bangladesh,” Ambassador Miller told the Chief Adviser, adding that the EU would also assist in deploying local election observers during the vote.

During the hour-long meeting, the two sides discussed a wide range of issues, including governance and constitutional reforms, election preparations, judicial and labour reforms, trade and investment relations between Bangladesh and the EU, and the broader political process in the country.

Ambassador Miller praised the July National Charter, describing it as a “very important” document aimed at ensuring a smooth democratic transition.

He also commended the recently approved labour law reforms and initiatives to strengthen the independence of the judiciary, calling them “notable successes.”

“These are all important steps,” he said, emphasizing the EU’s continued support for the Election Commission’s efforts to ensure free, fair, and credible elections in February.

Miller described the upcoming polls as “an opportunity to reset the reputation of the country.”

The envoy also reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s smooth graduation from a Least Developed Country (LDC) to a middle-income nation.

Both sides discussed ways to deepen trade and investment ties, including prospects for an economic partnership agreement and exploring new opportunities in aviation and shipping. They also agreed to work more closely on tackling human trafficking and illegal migration.

Professor Yunus said Bangladesh is expected to sign an agreement with global shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk for the development and management of the Laldia Terminal at Chittagong Port.

Ambassador Miller noted that the Danish company plans to invest around US$800 million to develop Laldia into one of the top terminals in the region.

The two sides also discussed the election environment, candidate eligibility, and ensuring due process to uphold human rights ahead of the vote.

UN voices concern over impasse at Pak-Afghan talks to reach peace accord

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 29 (APP/DNA):The United Nations has expressed concern over the failure of the talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan in Istanbul to reach an agreement, hoping that the fighting between the two neighbouring countries will not resume.

“Yes, it is, of course,” UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in response to a question about whether the deadlock after four days of negotiations was a matter of concern for the U.N.

“We very much hope that even if the talks are on pause, the fighting will not renew,” he told reporters at the regular noon briefing at UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday.

The talks followed an earlier round in Doha that produced a ceasefire on Oct. 19 after deadly border clashes between the two sides. However, the ceasefire was still holding, and no new clashes were reported between Pakistan and Afghanistan hours after the talks collapsed.

The primary point of contention was Pakistan’s demand for the Afghan Taliban to take decisive action against the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a terrorist group that Islamabad says uses Afghan soil to launch attacks inside Pakistani territory.

Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar wrote on social media platform X that the dialogue “failed to bring about any workable solution,” despite mediation by Qatar and Turkey.
