Pakistan urges equal, non-discriminatory access to civil nuclear technology

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 30 Pakistan has called for equitable and non-discriminatory access to civil nuclear cooperation to meet the country’s energy needs, while reaffirming its commitment to nuclear security.

“We underscore that removal of barriers for gaining equitable and non- discriminatory access to civil nuclear cooperation is of fundamental importance,”
Pakistani delegate Syed Atif Raza told the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday during a debate on the annual report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Vienna-based UN agency.

“There is a need to eliminate discrimination inherent in existing non-proliferation arrangements and establish a framework for promoting peaceful nuclear energy under appropriate international safeguards,” said Raza, a counsellor at the Pakistan Mission to the UN.

At the outset, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi presented his report on its work, including in Ukraine, Iran and Syria, as well as an overview of the development and transfer of nuclear technologies for peaceful applications, the enhancement of nuclear safety and security, and the strengthening of nuclear verification and non-proliferation efforts on a global scale.

The Agency’s initiatives include training women workers in the nuclear industry through the Marie Curie and Lise Meitner fellowships and deploying nuclear technology for health, food security, and environmental protection.

In his remarks, Raza, the Pakistani delegate, said Pakistan upholds the highest standards of nuclear safety and security which are in line with the IAEA standards.

Underscoring that all States fully comply with their respective safeguards obligations, he said that those commitments should not be used to serve partisan political objectives. “Its verification regime will remain credible only if it is applied on a non-discriminatory basis as stipulated in the Agency’s Statute.”

Pakistan, he said, believes that attacks on safeguarded nuclear facilities undermine the IAEA’s safeguards mechanism, contravene international law, the charter of the UN, Statute of the IAEA and relevant General Conference resolutions.

Raza highlighted Pakistan’s extensive experience in operating a secure and fully safeguarded nuclear power programme, pointing to six nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 3,530 megawatts. During last year, he added, the total nuclear energy generation contributed to 18% of the overall energy mix, which translates to 34% of our low-carbon energy production preventing approximately 15 million tonnes of CO2 emissions every year.

“Pakistan stands ready to further strengthen partnership with the IAEA and other Member States in promoting peaceful uses of nuclear energy to realize our collective objectives and sustainable development goals,” the Pakistani delegate said.

Ben Austin was in the nets with a helmet on before a Twenty20 game in Melbourne on Tuesday when he was hit in the neck while facing a ball-throwing device.
He was rushed to hospital in critical condition.
“We are utterly devastated by the passing of our beautiful Ben, who died earlier on Thursday morning,” his father Jace Austin said in a statement.
“This tragedy has taken Ben from us, but we find some comfort that he was doing something he did for so many summers — going down to the nets with mates to play cricket.
“We would also like to support his teammate who was bowling in the nets. This accident has impacted two young men and our thoughts are with he and his family as well.”
Austin was an emerging bowler and batter, considered by his Ferntree Gully Cricket Club as a “star cricketer, great leader and an awesome young man”.

Jemimah’s century steers India into Women’s World Cup final

Jemimah Rodrigues’s unbeaten century propelled India into the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 final, off the back of a five-wicket victory against Australia in the second semi-final at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy on Thursday.

The victory propelled the co-hosts into the final, where they will be locking horns with South Africa at the same venue on Sunday.Chasing a daunting 339-run target, the home side comfortably knocked the winning runs for the loss of five wickets and nine balls to spare, courtesy of a gutsy century by Rodrigues.

India, however, had a contrasting start to the pursuit as they lost returning opener Shafali Verma (10) in the second over with just 13 runs on the board.

The early setback paved the way for Rodrigues to come out at number three, and she shared a crucial 46-run partnership for the second wicket with in-form Smriti Mandhana, who made a run-a-ball 24 until falling victim to Kim Garth in the 10th over.

Rodrigues was then joined by skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, and the duo anchored the run chase by putting together 167 runs for the third wicket.

The vital stand was eventually broken by Annabel Sutherland in the 36th over when she got Kaur caught at deep midwicket. The Indian captain made 89 off 88 deliveries with the help of 10 fours and two sixes.

Following her departure, Jemimah received notable support from Deepti Sharma (24), Richa Ghosh (26) and Amanjot Kaur (15 not out) to steer India over the line in the penultimate over.

Jemimah Rodrigues top-scored for India with an unbeaten 127 off 134 deliveries, featuring 14 boundaries.

For Australia, Garth and Sutherland could pick up two wickets each.

Australia captain Alyssa Healy’s decision to bat first paid dividends as the defending champions finished at 338 all out in 49.5 overs.

The holders, however, had a shaky start to their innings as they lost their captain, Healy (five), on the first delivery of the sixth over with just 25 runs on the board.

Following the early setback, experienced Perry joined Litchfield in the middle, and the duo shifted the momentum in Australia’s favour by knitting an anchoring 155-run partnership for the second wicket.

The platform-setting stand was eventually broken by Amanjot Kaur in the 28th over as she cleaned up Litchfield, who remained the top-scorer for Australia with 119 off 93 deliveries, studded with 17 fours and three sixes.

Her dismissal sparked a brief middle-order collapse which saw Australia lose four more wickets, including that of Perry, in quick succession.

Perry remained a notable run-getter for Australia with an 88-ball 77, featuring six fours and two sixes.

With the scoreboard reading 265/6 in 41.4 overs, all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner took charge of Australia’s batting expedition and smashed a blistering half-century to ensure a commanding finish.

She struck four sixes and as many fours on her way to a 45-ball 63 until getting run out in the penultimate over.

Gardner also shared a 66-run partnership for the seventh wicket with fellow all-rounder Kim Garth, who chipped in with a run-a-ball 17.

For India, Shree Charani and Deepti Sharma picked up two wickets each, while Kranti Gaud, Radha Yadav and Kaur made one scalp apiece.

It is pertinent to mention that the winner of the ongoing knockout fixture will take on South Africa in the Women’s World Cup 2025 final, scheduled to be played at the same venue on Sunday.

KP CM ‘willing to work with Centre’ if decisions not imposed

RAWALPINDI: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has said that his government is ready to cooperate with the federal government if decisions are not imposed behind closed doors.

The provincial chief executive was once again denied permission to meet jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan.

It was the fourth time since his October 13 election as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister that Afridi had been denied a meeting with the jailed PTI founder.

Speaking to Geo News on Thursday, Afridi — who replaced Ali Amin Gandapur as the chief minister earlier this month — said he has started reviewing provincial affairs and has received several briefings, with more scheduled in the coming days.

The chief minister, who is a young PTI leader, added that consultation for a short provincial cabinet has been completed, and it will be formed soon.

Commenting on governance, Afridi said that resolving issues requires sincere intent rather than mere experience. “To run provincial matters, one needs the will to serve the public, not just experience,” he remarked.

He questioned what the experienced rulers in Punjab and the Centre had delivered to the people, noting the decline in economic growth. “What was our GDP growth in 2022, and what is it now?” he asked.

Despite political rivalry, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Afridi for being elected as the chief minister and emphasised the centre-province coordination to achieve the national goals. It was the first telephonic conversation between PM Shehbaz and CM Afridi following the latter’s election to the top post.

Speaking to reporters separately, the chief minister said the provincial cabinet had been finalised in line with the PTI founder’s directions, with more than 10 members included in the first phase. He added that the remaining cabinet members were under consideration.

Afridi said complaints from party workers were being addressed and that the provincial government was focusing on performance and accountability.

On the security front, he expressed concern over continued cross-border terrorism, saying that Pakistan was still facing attacks and martyrdoms originating from Afghanistan.

Soon after taking office, CM Afridi announced plans to meet Khan to discuss policy guidelines and the formation of his cabinet.

PTI leaders — including Afridi — then approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC) to ensure his meeting with the PTI founder for the same.

While the IHC directed prison authorities to allow such meetings, CM Afridi was unable to meet Khan when he arrived outside the Adiala jail on October 23.

Following the denial, he staged a short sit-in outside the prison, demanding the implementation of the court’s directives, though without success.

It is worth mentioning here that Khan has been behind bars since August 2023 following his conviction in in the Toshakhana case-I — one of the multiple cases registered against him since his ouster from power via a no-confidence vote in April 2022.

Inside Prince Andrew, King Charles’ financial settlement over Royal Lodge

Prince Andrew and King Charles have seemingly been exposed over their financial settlement over Royal Lodge that the former Duke recently agreed to vacate.

For those unversed still, this comes after the royal relinquished his right to use his titles and honors publically, right after his late accuser’s memoir Nobody’s Girl dropped. The conversation initially opened in a chat with Fox News Digital when British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard spoke out.

She started by saying, “The public is furious that Prince Andrew is still living in luxury.”

And “they want answers about his finances,” plus she admitted that “people feel the king’s intervention is too little, too late.”

For those unversed, the only declared source of income Prince Andrew has is his pension from the Royal Navy after a service that lasted from 1979 to 2001.

However, back in 2014 he had bought a Swiss lodge for £18 million ($23.99 million), which past reports by The Guardian say came from a different source because annual payouts of £20,000, or about $26,640, for an £18 million property means its “hardly enough”.

This alleged financial settlement in question has been highlighted by commentator Richard Fitzwilliams.

He said, “the king used to give him an allowance of a reported £1 million a year ($1.33 million) and pay for his security, but this ended last year.”

“Sarah Ferguson sold her house in Belgravia for a reported £3.85 million ($5.13 million) in August. She is not in debt. He may also have money from sources abroad we are unaware of.”

This is precisely why the commentator feels, “He appears to have accepted the need to move from Royal Lodge, and that will involve a financial settlement.”
