Syria joins alliance against the IS

Syria joins alliance against the IS

News Desk

WASHINGTON: Syria is joining the global coalition against the militant Islamic State (IS) group, a United States’ official said on Monday hours after US President Donald Trump welcomed his Syrian counterpart Ahmed al-Sharaa for historic White House talks.

Sharaa, whose rebel forces ousted longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December last year, was the first Syrian leader to visit the White House since the Middle Eastern country’s independence in 1946.

But the 43-year-old’s landmark visit to the Oval Office came just days after Washington removed him from its terrorism list. Sharaa’s group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), was formerly affiliated with Al-Qaeda.

“During the visit, Syria announced that it is joining the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS,” becoming the 90th member of the alliance and “partnering with the United States to eliminate ISIS remnants and halt foreign fighter flows”, a senior administration official said.

According to the official, Syria will also be allowed to resume diplomatic relations with Washington “to further counterterrorism, security, and economic coordination”.

Trump said he wanted Syria to become “very successful” after more than a decade of civil war and added that he believed Sharaa “can do it, I really do”.

“He’s a very strong leader. He comes from a very tough place, and he’s a tough guy,” Trump told reporters after the meeting, which was closed to press.

“People said he’s had a rough past, we’ve all had rough pasts… And I think, frankly, if you didn’t have a rough past, you wouldn’t have a chance.”

ISLAMABAD, Nov 11 (APP/DNA): Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi Tuesday strongly condemned the terrorist attack near the Islamabad District Judicial Complex, expressing deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives.

In his statement, the minister extended heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured.

Hanif Abbasi said that the nation stands united against terrorism and any attempt to disrupt Pakistan’s peace and stability through acts of terror will fail.

“The terrorists are enemies of national unity and stability. Their complete elimination is possible only through our collective national resolve,” the minister added.

He emphasized that the entire nation salutes the sacrifices of the security forces in their ongoing fight against terrorism. “The nefarious designs of Pakistan’s enemies will be thwarted at all costs,” he added.

'All students, staff rescued' as hunt for three terrorists continues in Cadet College Wana

RAWALPINDI, NOV 11: Security forces have successfully rescued all students and teachers from Cadet College Wana under attack by a group of terrorists as the clearance operation entered the conclusive phase on Tuesday, security sources said.

According to security sources, the operation will now be carried out comprehensively to its logical conclusion.

The cautious approach was necessary due to the presence of Afghan Khawarij inside the college and the paramount need to ensure the safety of the cadets’ lives, sources added.

“Operation will continue until the last terrorist is eliminated,” the security source added.

Speaking to journalists earlier, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that at least three people were martyred during the ongoing operation.

“Terrorists tried to take people hostage inside the cadet college but did not succeed,” he said, adding that attackers were in contact with their handlers in Afghanistan.

A day earlier, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that Indian-backed terrorists attacked Cadet College Wana, with security forces eliminating two attackers and trapping three inside.

Meanwhile, security forces in a statement earlier today said that an operation was underway against terrorists, belonging to an Indian proxy, Fitna al-Khwarij, who took shelter inside Wana Cadet College.

They said that the terrorists had targeted the college with a vehicle-borne explosive device, which struck the main gate and damaged nearby buildings. Two militants were killed during an immediate response by the security forces.

“The militants were receiving instructions from Afghanistan and are hiding in a building located far from cadet residences,” said security sources.

The sources said that at the time of the attack, approximately 650 individuals, including 525 cadets, were inside the college.

Aimed at instilling fear amongst the young generation of erstwhile tribal areas who are acquiring quality education at their doorstep to excel in life and achieve a better future for not only themselves and their families but also for their communities.

“This blatant act of barbarism orchestrated by Khwarij from Afghanistan is in contrast to assertions made by the Afghan Taliban regime claiming non-presence of these terrorist groups on their soil. Pakistan reserves the right to respond against terrorists and their leadership present in Afghanistan,” the military said.

Peace talks
The attack comes days after peace talks between the Afghan Taliban regime and Pakistan broke down, although a ceasefire continues between the two neighbours.

Last week, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said negotiations between Pakistan and Afghanistan had been suspended, with “no programme for the fourth round of talks”.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in a statement today, urged Kabul to rein in militant groups, including the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) operating from Afghan soil, framing it as the prerequisite for durable peace in the region.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference on Tuesday, he said a stable Afghanistan is essential for connectivity, growth and prosperity.

“Afghanistan must realise that lasting peace can only be realised by reining in TTP and other terrorist groups operating from Afghan territory,” he said.

PM Shehbaz strongly condemns Indian-backed terrorist attack near Judicial Complex

PM Shehbaz strongly condemns Indian-backed terrorist attack near Judicial Complex

ISLAMABAD, Nov 11 (APP/DNA):Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday strongly condemned the terrorist attacks carried out in the federal capital’s G-11 Judicial Complex (Katcheri), describing it as a heinous acts of terror orchestrated by Indian-backed proxies operating from Afghan soil.

The PM expressed deep sorrow over the loss of precious lives and prayed for the elevation of ranks of the martyrs and patience for their families. “My heartfelt sympathies, as well as those of the entire nation, are with the families of the martyrs,” he said in a news release from the Prime Minister’s Office.

PM Shehbaz Sharif also prayed for the swift recovery of the injured and directed the authorities concerned to ensure the best possible medical treatment for them.

Condemning the “Indian-sponsored terrorist proxies,” the prime minister said that targeting innocent Pakistani citizens through cross-border terrorism was an abhorrent and cowardly act. “These attacks are a continuation of India’s state-sponsored terrorism aimed at destabilizing Pakistan,” he added.

The PM revealed that while Indian-backed militants struck in Islamabad, the same network operating from Afghan territory had also attacked innocent children in Wana. “No condemnation is enough for these attacks being carried out from Afghan soil under Indian patronage,” he said.

Shehbaz Sharif reiterated that the blood of innocent Pakistanis would not go in vain. “We will continue our war against terrorism until the last terrorist of the so-called ‘Fitna-e-Hindustan’ and ‘Fitna-e-Khawarij’ is eliminated,” he vowed.

The PM directed the concerned institutions to conduct a thorough investigation into the incidents and ensure that the perpetrators and their facilitators are brought to justice.

He stressed that such cowardly acts could not shake Pakistan’s resolve to root out terrorism completely. “India must immediately cease its vile policy of sponsoring terrorism in the region. The time has come for the international community to take notice and condemn these nefarious designs,” he said.

PM Shehbaz said that the recent attacks had once again exposed ugly face of Indian state terrorism and it’s role in undermining regional peace and stability. “Both attacks are the worst examples of India’s state-sponsored terrorism in the region,” the PM said.

Attack on Wana Cadet College, Islamabad highlights terrorists’ disregards for peace, education

Attack on Wana Cadet College, Islamabad highlights terrorists’ disregards for peace, education

PESHAWAR, Nov 11 (APP/DNA):The nation on Tuesday mourned yet another tragic suicide blast outside the district courts in Islamabad that claimed at least 12 lives and injured 27 others, along with a violent assault on Cadet College Wana in South Waziristan where five Fitnaul Khwaraj were killed on Monday.

The twin attacks of Islamabad suicide explosion and the assault on Cadet College Wana have once again exposed the callousness of the Fitna-ul-Khawarij (TTP), who continue to target innocent citizens and vulnerable institutions in their sinister attempts to sow fear, disrupt education, and weaken national unity after allegedly being facilitated by India and Afghanistan.

These despicable acts of terrorism are not isolated incidents, but part of a broader pattern of anti-Pakistan activities aimed at undermining social cohesion, education, and the very fabric of the nation’s progress and unity.

The terrorists, while attacking Wana Cadet College, tried to replicate the horrific tragedy of the 2014 Army Public School (APS) Peshawar massacre but failed. The brave soldiers of Pakistan have foiled their nefarious plans, eliminating all five assailants and saving countless lives of the students and teachers at Cadet College Wana on Monday.

Although the memory of the APS tragedy still haunts the nation, the Wana attack serves as another grim reminder of the fragility of peace in merged tribal districts when terrorism fanned by Indian proxies festers under the pretext of social, economic, and ideological grievances.

Security experts have underscored the complex intersection of social division, economic disparity, and ideological manipulation that allows terrorism to breed. They emphasized that while poverty and unemployment are global issues, the exploitation of these vulnerabilities by extremist elements in countries with lower literacy and awareness levels poses a significant challenge.

Dr. Syed Akhtar Ali Shah, former IGP and Home Secretary, observed that educated youth embody both hope and resistance to terrorists’ dark ambitions. “That is why educational institutions like we saw APS Peshawar in 2014 and now Wana Cadet College are attacked repeatedly because terrorists fear knowledgeable youth is a big hurdle,” he said. “Our enemies systematically target the illiterate and less educated youth, exploiting them in the name of religion and money through a calculated nefarious strategy.”

He pointed to poor governance structure in Afghanistan and involvement of Indian proxies using outlawed terror groups such as Fitnaul Khwaraj alias TTP and Fitnaul Hindustan alias BLA to destabilize Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

“The rapid progress under CPEC in Balochistan has alarmed hostile forces, who now use terrorism as a tool to derail Pakistan’s development,” he reiterated, urging Afghanistan to fulfill its commitments under the Doha Agreement by taking decisive action against banned TTP, BLA and other terror groups operating from its soil.

Dr. Muhammad Jamil, Director of Regional Studies at the University of Peshawar, stressed that discontent among marginalized communities provides fertile ground for extremist ideologies and such narratives undermine peace and economic development. “Social cohesion and equal opportunities are not just democratic ideals but essential tools in the fight against terrorism,” he said.

Highlighting the importance of positive youth engagement through sports, education and vocational educational training, he added that lack of development and sports facilities in remote and tribal areas of KP largely contributes to radicalization. Revival of traditional cultural institutions such as hujra, cinema, and local sports is vital to defeating extremism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Dr. Jamil Khan emphasized the need for community-based efforts including holding seminars, awareness campaigns, and educational reforms to counter extremist propaganda and rebuild public trust at grassroots level. “The role of civil society, educators, parliamentarians, and religious leaders is crucial in promoting a culture of peace, harmony and coexistence,” he said.

PML-N Khyber Pakhtunkhwa President Sahibzada Hamza Khan recalled the significant measures taken after the 2014 APS tragedy under the government of Muhammad Nawaz Sharif. “From the formulation of the landmark National Action Plan (NAP) to the establishment of NACTA and special anti-terrorism courts, the state took decisive action to cripple terror networks, resulting in peace in KP and Balochistan,” he reiterated.

He added that the PML-N government prioritized youth empowerment through initiatives like laptop distribution, scholarships, and soft loans, helping insulate young minds from extremist influences and bringing them under the education net.

Experts unanimously believed that eradicating terrorism and extremism requires a comprehensive, multi-pronged strategy in which all stakeholders play their due role. “Defeating terrorism is not merely a security operation rather it demands complete societal transformation rooted in education, economic justice, continuity of security policies and national unity,” they observed.

They further stressed that educational reforms introducing a unified curriculum promoting tolerance, critical thinking, and national identity are essential. A balanced “carrot and stick” approach is needed; those entrenched in violence must face justice, while those willing to reform should be reintegrated into society.

Ultimately, experts said that a proactive, inclusive, and united front against terrorism remains the only effective path forward. “Terrorism thrives in divided societies but it dies in united ones,” they concluded.
