Al-Shifa’s Haveli Lakha hospital to become operational by March

Al-Shifa’s Haveli Lakha hospital to become operational by March

RAWALPINDI, NOV 12 /DNA/ – Construction of the Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital in Haveli Lakha, Okara, has entered its final phase, with inauguration planned for March next year. The facility, built on two acres of donated land, will provide free eye care to thousands of residents in South Punjab, where more than 1.8 million Pakistanis live with blindness and 85 percent of cases are considered avoidable.

Maj. Gen. (Retd) Rehmat Khan, President of Al-Shifa Trust, told reporters that all major construction work has been completed and finishing touches are underway. He said the hospital will serve patients from Haveli Lakha, Depalpur, Pakpatan, Sahiwal, and Bahawalnagar, areas long deprived of specialized eye treatment. Nearly half of all blindness stems from cataracts, a condition largely treatable through routine surgery, but rural areas face severe shortages of trained staff and advanced surgical facilities, he added.

Staff training is underway for the hospital, which is designed to serve up to 250 OPD and IPD patients daily. The total cost of the project is 122 million rupees, while the total cost of equipment is 40 million. The project’s land and construction costs were fully donated by a local doctor, while Al-Shifa is supplying modern equipment and will manage operations. The facility will help reduce the burden on major city hospitals, said Maj. Gen. (Retd) Rehmat Khan. The trust currently operates hospitals in Rawalpindi, Sukkur, Kohat, Muzaffarabad, Gilgit and Chakwal, and screened more than 175,000 schoolchildren through over 550 free eye camps in the past year.

Maj. Gen. Khan said the expansion reflects the trust’s effort to extend healthcare access. By bringing eye care closer to remote populations, he said, the trust cuts travel costs and ensures early diagnosis, key to preventing blindness. Al-Shifa aims to reach over 2 million patients and perform more than 120,000 eye surgeries in the coming year.

Local officials and residents have welcomed the development, saying it will ease pressure on existing facilities in Okara and Sahiwal. For many families, especially daily-wage workers, the new hospital will mean shorter travel and reduced treatment costs, addressing a gap where limited access to services remain a major challenge. The trust currently treats around 80 percent of its patients free of cost.

ANP leader Mumtaz Ali narrowly escapes roadside blast in Swat

SWAT, NOV 12 (DNA): A roadside bomb explosion in the Shakardara area of Matta tehsil on Wednesday damaged the vehicle of Awami National Party (ANP) leader Mumtaz Ali Khan.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident.

According to the police, the explosion took place near the vehicle of Mumtaz Ali Khan, a former ANP candidate for the PK-9 constituency. The politician was on his way to attend a funeral when an explosive device planted around 300 feet from his residence detonated.

The police contingents immediately reached the scene, cordoned off the area, and launched an investigation into the incident.

The attack comes on the same day the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is hosting a peace jirga aimed at promoting stability and addressing security concerns in the province.

Just a day ago, at least 12 people were killed and 27 others injured in a suicide blast carried out by “Fitna al-Khawarij,” a proxy group allegedly backed by Indian-sponsored and Afghan Taliban-linked elements, outside the district courts in Islamabad’s G-11 sector.

The initial reports suggested the explosion occurred just outside the court premises, and hit the people standing nearby. The rescue officials said 12 people were confirmed dead while at least 21 others sustained injuries in the powerful blast.

However, the latest reports suggested that 12 people were killed and more than 20 people were injured including lawyers and litigants.

Police sources said the explosion was a suicide attack, and the severed head of the suspected bomber was recovered from the road. The attacker reportedly attempted to enter the court premises but detonated the explosives near a police vehicle when stopped by security personnel.

The Wana Cadet College also came under attack of terrorists, and the security forces safely rescued the students there.

Azerbaijan Marks Constitution Day

Azerbaijan celebrates Constitution Day, a date of profound national significance. The year 2025 has been officially declared as the Year of Constitution and Sovereignty in Azerbaijan, symbolizing the country’s deep commitment to statehood, legal traditions, national independence, and sovereign values. This declaration highlights the importance of reinforcing constitutional principles, strengthening national unity, and fostering civic responsibility across society.

Each year, 12 November marks the adoption of the Constitution of the independent Republic of Azerbaijan, compiled under the direct leadership of National Leader Heydar Aliyev and approved in 1995. The Constitution, which is based on the principles of “a democratic, constitutional, secular, unitary republic”, ensures the implementation of democratic and modern state-building, as well as fundamental socio-economic and political and legal reforms in Azerbaijan.

Following the restoration of state independence in 1991, Azerbaijan faced significant challenges. The years 1991–1993 were characterized by ineffective governance, political turbulence, and institutional fragility. State structures were not yet established, law and order deteriorated, and citizens’ fundamental rights and freedoms were under threat.

The turning point came in 1993, when the people of Azerbaijan insistently invited Heydar Aliyev to return to leadership. Through his decisive and historic mission, he restored political stability, strengthened public order, and laid the solid foundations of modern Azerbaijani statehood.

Under his leadership, the first Constitution of the independent Republic was drafted and adopted on 12 November 1995 through a nationwide referendum. This foundational document became the cornerstone of Azerbaijan’s legislative and institutional reforms, ensuring protection of the country’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and promoting cooperation with the international community. It has played a crucial role in shaping a legal and secular state system and in guaranteeing the welfare and rights of Azerbaijani citizens. This year, the nation proudly celebrates the 30th anniversary of its Constitution.

The Constitution’s Preamble affirms the defense of Azerbaijan’s state independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity as core objectives. However, for nearly three decades, Armenia’s occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized territories hindered the full realization of these principles. Restoring territorial integrity became a national priority, and the collective strength and will of the Azerbaijani people were mobilized to achieve this historic goal.

Recognizing the paramount importance of these achievements, President Ilham Aliyev issued a decree on 28 December 2024, declaring 2025 as the “Year of the Constitution and Sovereignty” in the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Iraqis vote in general election in rare moment of calm

Iraqis vote in general election in rare moment of calm

BAGHDAD, Nov 11 (AFP/APP):Iraqis elect a new parliament on Tuesday in a vote that comes at a pivotal time for the country and the wider region, and which both Iran and the United States will be closely watching.

Iraq has been unusually stable in recent years, as the nation tries to move past decades of war and repression under slain dictator Saddam Hussein and since the US-led invasion that toppled him.

But even now, the country of 46 million people suffers from poor infrastructure, failing public services and endemic corruption.

Many have lost hope that elections can bring meaningful change to their daily lives and see the vote as a sham that only benefits political elites and regional powers.

Polling stations will open at 7:00 am local time (0400 GMT) and close at 6:00 pm (1500 GMT).

Despite the scepticism, more than 7,740 candidates, nearly a third of them women, are running for the 329-seat parliament.

Only 75 independents are running under an electoral law that many believe favours larger parties.

More than 21 million people are eligible to vote, but there are fears turnout could drop below the 41 percent registered in 2021 — the lowest since voting began.

“Every four years, the same thing happens. We don’t see young faces or new energies” capable of “making a change,” said university student Al-Hassan Yassin.
