It is a privilege to be speaking here before you today and I know who I owe that to. I owe it to all those who, a little over 70 years ago, rose up against a barbaric regime which seized my country, France. I owe it to the nations who heard the cry of these resistance fighters and who sent their children, from America, Africa, Oceania and Asia, to French shores to help. They did not all know what France was, but they knew that defeat for France also meant the defeat of the ideals that they shared, that they were proud of and for which they were willing to die. They knew that their freedom and their values depended on the freedom of other men and women living thousands of kilometres from them.

In first visit, Trump urges reform so UN can meet full potential

NEW YORK, SEPT 19 (DNA) – US President Donald Trump criticized the United Nations for bloated bureaucracy and mismanagement on his first visit on Monday to UN headquarters, calling for “truly bold reforms” so it could be a greater force for world peace. Ahead of his maiden speech to the annual UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Trump hosted a short event to boost support for changes to the United Nations. “In recent years the United Nations has not reached its full potential because of bureaucracy and mismanagement, while the United Nations on a regular budget has increased by 140 percent and its staff has more than doubled since 2000,” Trump said.

WASHINGTON, SEPT 18 (DNA) – Donald Trump s administration ramped up the pressure on North Korea on Sunday ahead of a week of high-stakes diplomacy at the United Nations, warning Pyongyang will be “destroyed” if it refuses to end its “reckless” nuclear and ballistic missile drive. With US officials and their allies scrambling to find ways to contain an increasingly belligerent Pyongyang, the US president will address the UN General Assembly on Tuesday and then confer Thursday with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts on the sidelines of the meeting.

Famed actor Iftikhar Qaiser passes away

PESHAWAR, SEPT 17 (DNA) – Senior actor Iftikhar Qaiser breathed his last Sunday morning after protracted illness in a hospital in the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Qaiser was admitted to Peshawar’s Lady Reading Hospital on Sept 09 after his health condition deteriorated. He was suffering from diabetes and stomach disorder for the last several years, according to the hospital administration. The famed actor started his acting career in his early age with a play on state-run Pakistan Television. His versatility and art of performance earned him a special place in the drama industry and widespread popularity with a huge number of fans across the country.

Sitting most of the day may lead to an early grave

NEW YORK, SEPT 16 (DNA) – Adults who are inactive much of the day may be more likely to die prematurely than people who don’t sit around a lot, regardless of their exercise habits, a U.S. study suggests. People may also be less likely to die young if they break up sedentary time by moving around every half hour than if they remain seated for longer stretches of time without getting up, the study also suggests. “We think these findings suggest that it is simply not enough to be active or move at just one specific time of the day, that is, exercise,” said lead study author Keith Diaz of the Center for Behavioral Cardiovascular Health at Columbia University Medical Center in New York.

Low calorie diet can reverse Type 2 diabetes: study

NEWCASTLE, SEPT 16 (DNA) – While excess calories lead to a fatty liver and thus too much glucose, losing less than one gram of fat from the pancreas can re-start insulin production, reversing type 2 diabetes, a new study conducted by Newcastle University says. Going on a low-calorie diet, which includes consuming just 600 calories a day for eight weeks, could reverse the type 2 diabetes, the study further claims. Professor Roy Taylor, the lead author of the study, said that the reversal of diabetes remains possible for at least ten years after the beginning of the condition.

RIP Basi: World’s oldest panda dies at the age of 37

the world’s oldest captive giant panda dies at the age of 37 in China, the oldest panda’s death was announced by her keepers in China’s south-eastern Fuzhou province. Basi who has outlived most of her peers, reached the equivalent of more than one hundred in human years. She was named after a valley she was rescued from. She lived at the panda facility since she was a little cub. Pandas are considered symbolic in China, and are highly protected. But following decades of conservation work they are no more in the list of endangered animals. Her handlers in China stated that they gave “Basi” an emotional send-off.

Senators raise questions over perks being granted to PSO MD

ISLAMABAD, SEPT 14 (DNA) – Senators on Wednesday questioned the salary, allowances and perks being  enjoyed by Pakistan State Oil (PSO) Managing Director Imranul Haque. During the question hour, senators Jahanzeb Jamaldini, Saeed Mandokhel, Colonel (Retired) Tahir Hussain Mashhadi and Sirajul Haq said the PSO MD was cumulatively getting Rs6 million per month as salary, allowances and other fringe benefits. Appraising the house, State Minister for Petroleum Jam Kamal said Haque was appointed the PSO managing director by following due procedure.“Advertisement was published for the vacant position (of PSO MD) and interviews of various candidates were conducted,” he said.
