High doses of common painkillers increase heart attack risks
ISLAMABAD: Long-term high-dose use of painkillers such as ibuprofen or diclofenac is “equally hazardous” in terms of heart attack risk as use of the drug Vioxx, which was withdrawn due to its potential dangers, researchers said. Presenting the results of a large international study into a class of painkillers called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), the researchers said high doses of them increase the risk of a major vascular event -a heart attack, stroke or dying from cardiovascular disease by around a thirdm, Fox News Reported.
Clarke doubtful for Champions Trophy opener
LONDON: Australia captain Michael Clarke is doubtful for his side’s Champions Trophy opener against hosts England this weekend after missing Tuesday’s warm-up match against India in Cardiff with a recurrence of his longstanding back problem.“Michael is still experiencing some lower back pain and as such is not fit for the warm-up game against India today (Tuesday),” said Australia physiotherapist Alex Kountouris.
“He will head to London tomorrow (Wednesday) for specialist treatment and a decision on his fitness for the next game will be made in due course.”
Grenade blast wounds six in Indian-administered Kashmir
SRINAGAR: An Indian policeman and five others were injured in a grenade attack Tuesday by suspected militants on army vehicles in Indian-administered Kashmir, police said. “Militants hurled a grenade at two army vehicles that were parked along the highway injuring a head constable and five civilians,” superintendent of police, Ramesh Jala, told DNA over the phone.
Indian actress Jiah Khan commits suicide
MUMBAI: Indian actress Jiah Khan has committed suicide at her residence, Indian media reports said on Monday night. Khan, 25, was reported to have hung herself inside her house in Mumbai.”She had been depressed for some time due to personal issues, but was keen on returning to acting soon. She was also meeting filmmakers regarding projects,” Times of India quoted sources close to the actress as saying.
