Iraq mayhem ‘ready to explode’ into wider conflict, U.N. official says

A wave of deadly bombings struck Baghdad on Thursday in an already remarkably lethal week in Iraq, prompting a U.N. official to warn the mayhem is “ready to explode” into a wider conflict.

And violence wasn’t limited to Iraq’s capital — Anbar province’s governor escaped the latest apparent attempt to assassinate him when bombs exploded Thursday near his convoy in Ramadi and injured four of his bodyguards, police said.

Allocation for defence likely to be raised

ISLAMABAD: The finance ministry has finalised the federal expenditure estimates for the next fiscal year, envisaging Rs171 billion for pension and retirement benefits, Rs627bn for defence services and Rs313bn for subsidies and miscellaneous expenses. The allocation for defence services is 15 per cent more than the Rs545bn allocated in the current financial year’s budget. Besides, an allocation of Rs33bn has been made for civil armed forces, Rs4bn more than the current year’s Rs29bn. This will be in addition to Rs6.3bn for the Frontier Constabulary, Rs1.5bn for the Pakistan Coast Guards, Rs14.5bn for Pakistan Rangers and Rs8.7bn for the interior ministry. The Airport Security Force will get Rs3.66bn.

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled the appointment of Admiral (retd) Fasih Bokhari to the position of chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) void.The ruling was issued by a five-judge bench of the apex court headed by Justice Tassadduq Hussain Jilani.The court ruled that Bokhari’s appointment to the post was unconstitutional and unlawful, adding that it was in violation with Section 6 of the NAB Ordinance.
