Turkmenistan remains one of the world’s most repressive countries. The country is virtually closed to independent scrutiny, media and religious freedoms are subject to draconian restrictions, and human rights defenders and other activists face the constant threat of government reprisal. The government continues to use imprisonment as a tool for political retaliation. The release of several political prisoners and the adoption of some new laws that some have hailed as “reform,” have barely dented this stark reality.

Imran Khan had challenged results of this constituency and alleged that election in this constituency was rigged. Sardar Ayaz Sadiq sources say they will challenge the decision in the Supreme Court. The tribunal has ordered fresh elections in the provincial assembly constituency also. Ayaz Sadiq lawyers claim the tribunal has not said that there was rigging in the elections. They have said that there were some irregularities and we are not responsible for irregularities. The tribunal delayed the decision for many hours, which gave birth to many rumours that there was something fishy going on. Analysts term this decision important in the sense that if the apex court upholds this decision, it may be a big moral defeat for the sitting government. It may then come under pressure to call early elections. It may be mentioned here that Imran Khan had seen maintaining a stance that 2015 is the year of elections.
