PARIS, JAN 26 – People who are frequently depressed or anxious may run a higher risk of dying from certain types of cancer, researchers said on Thursday.Medical records of more than 160,000 adults in England and Wales showed that those describing themselves as psychologically distressed were more likely to succumb to cancer, especially of the colon, prostate and pancreas.Leukaemia and cancer of the oesophagus, or food pipe, were also more elevated among this group, they wrote in the BMJ medical journal. The researchers were cautious in their conclusions, pointing out that a statistical link does not necessarily signify a cause-and-effect relationship between mood and cancer. But the findings add to growing evidence that mental and physical health do not function on separate planes, and that one can influence the other, they said.

From Lahore’s streets to world cup finals – the journey of Wasim Akram
JAN 24 – I have often battled with myself to figure out exactly how I want to remember Wasim Akram. He is the best left-arm pacer to have played the game but there were the dark days of match fixing too.Last week marked the anniversary of when he reached 400 ODI wickets. And for the occasion, I am going to set the heartbreak aside and think of the joy that Wasim Akram brought into our lives. It pitched short of length, on or around the off stump. What was Allan Lamb supposed to do? Come forward? It wasn’t that full. Stay back? It wasn’t that short either. He was done. The next delivery pitched way outside the off stump. Chris Lewis brought his front leg forward but he was too late; the ball never really stopped coming back in. Two in two. Game, set and match.

Compared to people who didn’t use the drugs, those who did were at higher risk for a severe form of diarrhea caused by the Clostridium difficile bacteria. Their odds of this infection were 1.4 times higher when they were hospitalized and 1.7 times higher when they weren’t in the hospital.
