Depression tied to shorter lifespan: study

OTTAWA, OCT 26 (DNA) – People who suffer from depression may not live as long as individuals who don’t experience this mental health disorder, a Canadian study suggests. Researchers examined six decades of mental health and mortality data on 3,410 adults during three time periods: 1952 to 1967, 1968 to 1990 and 1991 to 2011. Depression was associated with an increased risk of premature death in every decade of the study for men, and starting in the 1990s for women.

China paves new Silk Road, at a forgotten Pakistan port

GWADAR, OCT 25 (DNA) – Remote and impoverished, Pakistan´s Gwadar port at first glance seems an unlikely crown jewel in a multi-billion-dollar development project with China aimed at constructing a 21st century Silk Road. Situated on a barren peninsula in the Arabian Sea, Gwadar, or the “gate of the wind”, owes its fortuitous selection as Pakistan´s next economic hub to its strategic location near the Strait of Hormuz. The city is set to become the bridgehead for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a $54 billion project launched in 2013 linking western China to the Indian Ocean via Pakistan.

10 climbers dead after avalanche in Mongolia

ULAANBAATAR, OCT 23 (DNA) – Ten climbers who ignored a ban on ascending Mongolia s Mount Otgontenger have been killed by an avalanche while seven others are still missing, rescue services said Monday. The Mongolian nationals have been missing since Sunday after reaching the peak of the 4,021-metre (13,192 foot) mountain. The bodies were found at a lower altitude of 3,400 metres. The group was made up of four women and 13 men aged 30 to 50, and it is unclear who among them are still missing.

Senior separatists detained as Madrid piles pressure on Catalonia

MADRID, OCT 17 (DNA) –  A Spanish court has ordered two powerful Catalan separatists to be detained, threatening a further escalation of the political crisis on Tuesday as both sides refuse to budge in their high-stakes standoff over the region’s independence bid. Protests broke out in Catalonia’s capital Barcelona on Monday as news spread that Jordi Cuixart and Jordi Sanchez were being kept behind bars on sedition charges. The pair are the leaders of pro-independence citizens’ groups Omnium Cultural and the Catalan National Assembly (ANC) respectively, both of which count tens of thousands of members and have emerged as key players in the Catalonia crisis.

Japan zoo mourns death of love-struck penguin

TOKYO, OCT 14 (DNA) – An elderly penguin who shot to fame in Japan after falling in love with a cardboard cut-out of a cartoon character has died, at the ripe old age of 21. Officials at Tobu zoo in Saitama, north of Tokyo, said Grape passed away after a brief illness with the object of his desire right by his side. He would have been around 80 in human years. Earlier this year, the Humboldt penguin became smitten with a cut-out of Hululu — a character from the Japanese anime “Kemono Friends” — after being dumped by his former mate, a female called Midori. A love-sick Grape found solace in Hululu and would stare at her for hours on end.

India, Mauritius to restart FTA talks soon

India and Mauritius are set to revive talks for a free trade agreement (FTA), following a revision of the bilateral tax treaty last year that gave India the right to impose the capital gains tax on investments routed through the island nation. More than economic significance, the trade talks are of strategic importance to strengthen New Delhi’s presence in the Indian Ocean region to counter China’s mega investment plans through its one-belt-one-road (OBOR) initiative.

Import of mobile phones hikes by 40% in first two months of FY

ISLAMABAD, OCT 12 (DNA) : The imports of mobile phones into the country increased by 39.57 percent during the first two months of current fiscal year when compared to the imports of the corresponding period of last year. Mobile phones worth $129.329 million were imported into the country during July-August (2017-18) compared to the imports of $92.707 million during July-August (2016-17), according to the data of Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). The overall imports of telecoms sector increased by 35.30 percent by going up from $170.667 last year to $230.920 million during the current fiscal year, the data revealed.
