Hong Kong is well-known to the world. It is not only an important international financial, trade, shipping hub and international innovation and technology center, but also one of the freest economies and the most competitive cities in the world. Its unique position bridges mainland China and West world. Hong Kong enjoys the reputation as the Pearl of the Orient. Recently, however, against the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government’s proposed amendment bills to the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance and the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Ordinance, a series of demonstrations and violent incidents in Hong Kong have caused widespread concern in the international community. Friends in Pakistan may have questions about what is happening in Hong Kong? I would like to share my views in following aspects.

The UN Security Council has called emergency session of the Security Counil for tomorrow August 16, 2019.Pakistan had requested the UNSC President for convening of the session in the wake of recent developments in the occupied Kashmir.Meanwhile, the Russian representative in the UNSC hinted at not to oppose the convening of the session.Russian may also not oppose a resolution on Kashmir.

ISLAMABAD, (DNA) – Prime Minister Imran Khan will celebrate the Independence Day of Pakistan in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) where he is scheduled to address the Legislative Assembly of AJK.According to PM’s office, the premier, accompanied by several ministers, will fly to Muzaffarabad today (Wednesday) and hold meeting with leaders of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference AJK Chapter.Besides, he will hold meetings with other political representatives.The 72nd Independence Day is being observed today as Kashmir Solidarity Day to express harmony and solidarity with Kashmiris in their recent plight caused by the Indian government.

India has made a series of drastic, and in some cases unprecedented, moves in the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir, which is administered by New Delhi but claimed by Pakistan.On Aug. 2, the state government of Jammu and Kashmir issued an extraordinary order. Citing terrorist threats, it ordered tourists and pilgrims to evacuate, and it shuttered schools.This came several days after New Delhi deployed thousands of new troops to the region. Then, on Aug. 4, officials in Kashmir cut off internet access and placed several prominent leaders under house arrest.

LONDON, (DNA) – British member of the parliament (MP) Ivan Lewis has urged the British government to mediate between Pakistan and India on the Kashmir dispute by terming it as “a historic obligation” on the country.In a letter addressed to United Kingdom Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, he said the region of Kashmir has been the epicenter of violence and territorial conflict for more than 70 years.He said at the time, the UK signed United Nations Security Council resolution 47, which demanded that the Kashmiri people were given right of self-determination through a free ,fair and impartial plebiscite.
