Coronavirus: Germany reopens shops as lockdown is relaxed

Germany re-opens, football

league allowed to resume

BERLIN (DNA) -Chancellor Angela Merkel has said Germany’s goal of slowing the spread of coronavirus has been achieved, so all shops can be reopened as lockdown restrictions are eased.

Bundesliga football has been given the green light to resume and schools will gradually reopen in the summer term.

Germany’s 16 federal states, under an agreement with the government, will take control of timing the reopening.

They will operate an “emergency brake” if there is a new surge in infections.

General contact rules involving will continue for another month. A limited resumption has already begun, but this easing of restrictions is far broader.

Two households will be able to meet and eat together, and elderly people in nursing homes and facilities for the disabled will be able to have visits from one specific person.

‘Germany doing better than other countries’

“I think we can safely state that the very first phase of the pandemic is behind us,” Chancellor Merkel said. “But we need to be very much aware we are still in the early phases and we’ll be in it for the long haul.”

Bavarian leader Markus Söder said Germany was doing better than many other countries because it had adopted a good strategy nationally and regionally and everyone had remained patient. Social distancing of 1.5m (5ft) and hygiene were key to keeping the infection rate low, he said.

Germany has seen fewer than 7,000 deaths in the coronavirus pandemic – a much lower figure than in other Western European countries including the UK, Italy, France and Spain.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), a federal public health body, reported 165 deaths in the past 24 hours on Wednesday and some 947 new infections.

The rate of infection has been consistently low for some time, and Mrs Merkel said she was very pleased that the number of new, daily infections was into three digits. She praised the responsibility of German citizens in sticking to lockdown measures to protect the lives of others as well as themselves.

The popular daily newspaper Bild announced on Wednesday that Germany was opening up again. And broadly that is what has been agreed.

Shops of up to 800 square metres (8,600ft) in size have already been allowed to open. All restrictions on shops will now be lifted, although masks must be worn and social distancing maintained.

Chinese assistance to combat COVID- 19 another manifestation of deep-rooted friendship: Shibli

ISLAMABAD, May 06 (DNA):Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Shibli Faraz on Wednesday said the continued Chinese assistance to Pakistan for combating the COVID-19 pandemic  was another manifestation of the deep-rooted and time tested Pak China friendship.          He said this during a meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Yao Jing, who called on him here.

The information minister said the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan had taken a number of measures to combat COVID-19 and at the same time accorded due consideration to help out the needy and provide support to the small businesses and industries, especially the construction industry, which provided sustenance to thousands of daily wage workers.

Ambassador Yao Jing appreciated Pakistan’s singular drive to fight off the Covid 19 challenge. He said China would keep up its support to Pakistan at the critical juncture.               He expressed China’s intention for investment in labour intensive sectors in Pakistan, particularly the prime minister’s affordable housing programme with a view to bolster the government’s efforts to help the poor and deserving.

The minister welcomed the initiative and said low cost housing was among the government’s priorities. He said investment in the labour intensive sectors would help generate multiple job opportunities in the country. Full facilitation would be extended to the Chinese side for such investment, he added.

Yao Jing while reaffirming the resolve to resume cultural and media exchanges between the two countries as stipulated under the ambit of existing memorandums of understanding, made special mention of the proposed Pak-China joint co-production agreement which was at draft stage.

The minister welcomed the idea of resuming media and cultural exchanges once the conditions got better. He said the goal of enhanced media cooperation would be vigorously pursued. He said the proposed agreement on co-production was under process and once the draft was finalized, it would be shared with the Chinese side.

The Chinese ambassador also on the occasion congratulated Senator Shibli Faraz for assuming responsibilities as Minister for Information and Broadcasting and wished him the best in his future endeavours. The minister thanked him for the kind sentiments.

The meeting was attended by senior officials of the Ministry of I&B, and the Foreign Office.

Babar Azam gives pep talk to women’s team

LAHORE (DNA) – Top-ranked T20I batsman Babar Azam while speaking with the Pakistan national women’s team provided an insight into his training regime on the eve of a match and how he executes his tactics while in the middle, said an official press release.

In a videoconference call organised by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to help the women’s team remain focused on cricket during the Covid-19 lockdown all over the country, 15 international and emerging batters held an interactive session with the Pakistan men’s T20I side’s captain.

The 25-year-old insisted that developing a positive attitude in the build-up of a match was the key for better performances, while adding that practicing on the balls where he struggled rather than staying in the comfort zone has helped him become a better batsman.

“I am unable to perform 99 per cent of the times when I have a negative thought in my mind that I might fail,” Babar said. “It is very important that you don’t change your batting approach altogether because of a failure in one innings. But, try to identify how you could have done better.

“I watch all the top batsmen in the world to understand their batting approach in different situations as it helps me understand the game better.”

Babar also provided a glimpse into how he remains focused under pressure and laid emphasis that valuing one’s own wicket translates into becoming better at batting. “There’s a lot going on when you are at the crease. In that situation, it is better to talk to yourself and it is something that I do not only in a match but during practice as well.”

Babar, who is ranked number one in T20I cricket and is third and fifth in ODI and Test, advised the women players to take every match as a new match and ignore their achievements or failures of the past matches to remain focused on the task at hand.

“I watch even those innings of mine in which I have scored centuries, not to gloat, but to identify where I could have done better. It is very important that we stay away from complacency.”

Speaking on maintaining consistency in results, Babar said that he had set some particular goals for himself early in his career for which he has put enormous efforts to achieve.

“I had set a goal that I have to become the best player in the world. I analysed myself and identified the areas where I needed to work hard. I spoke to the coaches, seniors and worked extremely hard.

“It is very important that you help each other. Sometimes we are unaware of where we are going wrong and our teammates help us identify them. I still ask my younger brother while I am knocking whether I am doing well. I have been doing knocking with him from my young days so he knows me. Or I ask Imam [ul-Haq], and he asks me, because we know each other.”

England’s Morgan goes to bat for T10 format at Olympics

LONDON (DNA) – England’s World Cup winning captain Eoin Morgan says cricket’s 10-overs format would be ideal for a global multi-sport event such as the Olympics as the entire tournament could be squeezed into 10 days.

Cricket featured at the 1900 Olympics and was played in the 1998 Commonwealth Games but has largely been absent from multi-sport events, which some say has restricted its growth beyond the traditional pockets.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham will feature a women’s Twenty20 competition but Morgan says the T10 format would be a better fit than T20, 50 overs or test cricket.

“The one thing that T10 offers above the three formats that makes it so appealing to an Olympic Games or a Commonwealth Games is the fact that you can play a whole tournament in the space of 10 days,” he said in a video conference.

“To have a tournament in such a short space of time maximises the opportunity and the exposure that it will have for the sport.

“When you can play a cricket tournament in eight-10 days it really does make it appealing, and on top of that it really would be extremely entertaining,” said the 33-year-old, who captains Delhi Bulls in the Abu Dhabi T10 league.

Twenty20 has emerged as cricket’s most popular format, having spawned several franchise-based leagues around the world. Morgan said T10 has its own merits.

“The most important part of a T20 game is always overs 10 to 20,” said Morgan, who also captains Delhi Bulls in the Abu Dhabi T10 competition.

“But if you look at a T10 game, the earlier overs are the most important. You need to make the most of that very short powerplay, so who you put in those key positions and in the form that they’re in, is the most critical factor.”
