Rights violations in Held Kashmir : President AJK briefs  French Media

PARIS. In a virtual meeting with French media, academia, think tanks, human rights organizations, and civil society, President Azad Jammu and Kashmir Sardar Masood Khan said that India was using the cover of coronavirus pandemic to break the will of Kashmiris by denying them their right to self-determination  and by altering the status of the internationally recognized disputed region.

The virtual  video conference was convened  by the Embassy of Pakistan, Paris in which the Ambassador of Pakistan to France Mr. Moin ul Haque, prominent French media persons, scholars, intellectuals and civil society representatives participated.

The President AJK in his address contrasted  the worldwide Covid-19 lockdowns to save the people from deadly pandemic with the 9-month old lockdown in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir where 8 million Kashmiris were virtually under siege like conditions, without access to food, education, medicine, livelihood and freedom of movement and speech.

He also apprised the participants of Indian attempts to change the demography of the disputed region first by unilaterally and illegally revoking Article 370 and 35A of its Constitution and later through new domicile law, which were in contravention of several resolutions of the United Nations Security Council which forbade both India and Pakistan to unilaterally change the status of the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir.

Sardar Masood Khan also called upon the world leaders, intellectuals and media persons to take notice of the atrocities committed by Indian security forces against innocent Kashmiris and raise their voice for the resolution of the dispute in accordance with the United Nations Security Council resolutions and wishes of the people of Kashmir.

The President AJK also responded to several questions raised by the participants.

COVID-19 STRATEGY : FM for global multi stakeholder approach

ISLAMABAD, May 8 (DNA):Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Friday stressed the need for a multi-stakeholder global perspective approach to address the COVID-19 pandemic keeping in view its socioeconomic impact across the world.

He was addressing foreign intellectuals through video-link under his ‘FM Connect Digital with Global Thought Leaders’ initiative.

The guests included Dr William Ury (Harvard University), Professor Kishore Mahbubani (National University of Singapore), Dr Kevin P Gallagher (Boston University) and Dr Adil Najam (Boston University).

Foreign Minister Qureshi discussed with international experts the post COVID-19 realities on the global geo-political and socioeconomic landscape.

He apprised the intellectuals that in Pakistan, COVID-19 affected 24,073 persons and claimed 564 lives.

He said Pakistan’s healthcare system needed improvement to cater to the needs of emergency situations.

He said the government had allocated $8 billion to deal the economic impact of coronavirus situation. Under Ehsaas socio-welfare programme, Rs144 billion were being distributed among 12 million needy people, he added.

Qureshi said an amount of Rs75 billion was allocated for labourers and workers who lost jobs due to lockdown.

He mentioned that Pakistan suffered a dip in exports by 41 percent and feared fiscal deficit to increase by 10 percent due to the current situation.

He said Prime Minister Imran Khan in the same perspective proposed international community for ‘Global Debt Relief’, adding that announcement by G-20 Forum to provide financial assistance to weaker economies was welcoming.

The foreign minister said Pakistan was ready to host next SAARC Conference, however India changed the situation with its unilateral action of revoking the status of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5.

He said despite India’s irresponsible attitude, Pakistan recently hosted the SAARC meeting of health ministers through video-link amid coronavirus pandemic.

The intellectuals expressed their views on the COVID-19 scenario and the ways to tackle the situation.

Imran greets new Iraqi PM

ISLAMABAD )DNA) -Prime Minister Imran Khan has conveyed felicitations to Mustafa al-Kadhimi on his assumption of office as the Prime Minister of Iraq.

The Prime Minister expressed the confidence that under Prime Minister Al-Kadhimi’s leadership, the goals for reforms, national unity and development in Iraq would be further advanced.

Underlining the close fraternal ties between Pakistan and Iraq, Prime Minister Imran Khan conveyed that he looked forward to working with Prime Minister Al-Kadhimi to further deepen bilateral cooperation in diverse fields.

All sections of Chinese society support Pakistan to fight epidemic: Report

Islamabad, May 8 (DNA): All sections of Chinese society are generously supporting Pakistan, donating medical supplies and funds, sharing experience of anti-epidemic and dispatching medical experts to overcome COVID-19 virous.

According to Gwadar Pro, in recent fortnight, Chinese government and the people, enhanced their support to Pakistan in its efforts, to fight the epidemic.

On April 24th, Chinese military sent a batch of medical supplies to Pakistan, such as masks, testing kits and protective suits. Chinese military pasted cards with warm slogan and army emblem on the boxes of supplies.

Peering with the shipments, a team composed of military medical experts was also dispatched to support Pakistan overcome the outbreak.

A high school in China Hebei province donated 5,000 medical masks to Pakistan. With the help of the Pakistani embassy in China, this high school has set up a donation channel. Students donated their pocket money and purchased masks uniformly.

On the same day, a batch of medical supplies donated by the government of China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region departed from the provincial capital. Including 1,000 N95 masks, 20,000 medical masks, 500 protective suits and so on amounted to more than 120 thousand CNY or RB 2.7million , those supplies was sent to support Punjab to cope with epidemic.

On April 26th, the first batch of medical supplies donated by China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) for Pakistan to contain COVID-19 arrived at the Islamabad International Airport. Including more than 400thousand medical masks, 8,000 protective suits, thousands of other protective devices and 33respirators gross weighed 13tons.

This batch of supplies was considered as the largest donations Pakistan has received from foreign enterprises since the outbreak of the virus in the country.

On April 30th,Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Yao Jing handed over 1500 packs of food such as rice, flour, sugar, oil and daily necessities to Minister of State for SAFRON and Narcotics Affairs Shehryar Khan Afridi as donation for the Afghan refugees trapped in camps in Pakistan due to lockdown amid COVID-19 pandemic.
On the same day, Zong (China Mobile Pakistan) has donated Rs7 million to Prime Minister Relief Fund for COVID-19 Pandemic Relief Fund 2020. SAPM Zulfikar Bukhari thanked the CRO for donating generously towards the PM corona relief fund and urged private sectors to join the government’s efforts in fight against COVID-19.
Simultaneously, a volunteer team comprised by Chinese students in Pakistan has also supported Pakistan to fight against COVID-19.

Ma Bin, President of the Pak-China Education and Culture Center, Li Qiang, President of the Chinese Students in Pakistan association, and Wang Jin, leader of the public welfare group of the Chinese Students in Pakistan association, jointly organized and mobilized Chinese volunteers to help Pakistan tiding over the difficulties.

Up to May 4, this team has visited more than 2,200 impoverished families in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Kashmir, as well as a welfare home and a primary school in refugee camp. The food packs containing rice, flour, oil, sugar, beans and milk tea, were sent to impoverished families who have run out of the food.

On May 5th, the third batch of supporting packs donated by the Chinese general consulate in Karachi has been distributed. Those supplies containing food and other necessities were distributed to 150 poor families in southeastern Balochistan, the report added.

Patients suffering from other diseases being ignored due to coronavirus: Dr Faisal

ISLAMABAD (Dna) – Prime Minister s Focal Person on COVID-19 Dr Faisal on Thursday said that the patients suffering from other diseases were being ignored due to novel coronavirus pandemic.

In a media briefing, after National Coordination Committee meeting regarding COVID-19, in Islamabad on Thursday, he said that the prevention of coronavirus is in our hands.

The focal person urged the people adopt precautionary measures. “We have ventilators and other facilities otherwise the pandemic would get out of our hands.”

Dr Faisal said undoubtedly, tally of corona cases has gone up in the country, which has put some pressure on our health system, but it should be clear that our health system has the capacity to handle the situation and we have yet not reached to a saturated point.

He urged people to observe social distancing and SOPs recommended by the government for the containment of the pandemic.

Hamamad Azhar outlines plans to gradually reopen industries

ISLAMABAD (Dna) – Federal Minister for Industries and Production Hammad Azhar has outlines plans to gradually reopen industries on Thursday.

In a media briefing, after National Coordination Committee meeting regarding COVID-19, in Islamabad on Thursday, that it has been unanimously decided to open allied industries of the construction sector, which include paint and pipe mills, tiles, electrical and industry and hardware stores across Pakistan.

Hamad Azhar said that the shops of essential commodities have already been opened and pipe mills, paint manufacturing, ceramics, tile shops will now open. In addition, electrical cable, steel and aluminum shops will open.

The minister said that the hardware stores will also open, while shops in markets and neighborhoods have also been allowed to open. “Shops will be closed 2 days a week,” he said.

Educational institutions to remain closed till 15 July: Shafqat Mehmood

ISLAMABAD (DNA) – Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Shafqat Mehmood on Thursday said that the educational institutions will remain closed till 15 July.

In a media briefing, after National Coordination Committee meeting regarding COVID-19, in Islamabad on Thursday, he said that all the board examinations have been cancelled and students will be promoted to the next class and they can get admission in colleges and universities on the basis of their previous result. For example, a student can get admission in a university on the basis of his 11th class result.

Earlier, the federal minister said that the government is considering to start Radio Education program to expand the distance learning project to far flung areas of the country.

Mehmood said the federal government would strengthen the Tele education system by including feedback mechanism to facilitate the students, moreover online education for higher classes would be more improved with the passage of time.

Responding to a question, the minister said the National Coordination Committee would take the final decision regarding reopening of educational institutions after prime minister Imran Khan’s approval.

”I think it is not possible to open school now, pandemic would likely to hit its peak in May as the experts have predicted so,” he said.

Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf promised with the nation to clean the national politics from corruption, National Accountability Bereau(NAB) was an independent authority, he added.

EU extends Rs 26 bln COVID-19 package

ISLAMABAD (DNA) – Ambassador of the European Union to Pakistan, Androulla Kaminara met with Prime Minister Imran Khan to reiterate the EU’s commitment to support Pakistan during and beyond the Covid-19 crisis. She presented the 24.5 billion PKR Covid19 package that the EU has put together in support to Pakistan. Ambassador Kaminara and the Prime Minister also discussed how Pakistan and the EU can further benefit from a stronger political partnership in light of the political, economic and security developments.

Ambassador Androulla Kaminara said: “A longstanding friend and partner of Pakistan, the European Union stands side by side with Pakistan as the country faces the extraordinary challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic. The EU is convinced that the global pandemic requires global solidarity and cooperation. I very much appreciate the constructive discussion with Prime Minister Imran Khan and I am looking forward to continued collaboration during and beyond the current crisis.”

The Prime Minister briefed the Ambassador on the government’s vision and action to fight Covid19. Ambassador Kaminara lauded the governments’ efforts, including the scale-up of the Ehsaas programme for the most vulnerable and poor. She pointed out the opportunities of the partnership with the EU as major trade partner and key donor in Pakistan.

The European Union is directing more than € 150 million (26 billion PKR; 163 MUSD) towards the short and medium term response in the emerging health crisis in Pakistan and into strengthening the preparedness of Pakistan’s people for its social and economic impact, with a specific focus on the most vulnerable.

Milko van Gool, Head of Cooperation at the Delegation of the European Union to Pakistan explained: “The EU and its 27 Member States, as #TeamEurope, are collaborating on a comprehensive response to help Pakistan address the challenges related to Covid19. We are working closely with the Pakistani government and our partners to make sure our assistance intervenes where it is most needed and where it can make the biggest difference to help the Pakistani people in this crisis.”

The package covers a wide range of measures for the short and medium term: Humanitarian support of € 48.9 million:   Projects worth approximately € 11 million have been launched to provide emergency health support for the most vulnerable population across Pakistan. Another € 27.9 million will be released soon to scale-up this assistance. A further € 10 million will help mitigate the impact of the Covid-19 crisis on Afghan refugees and their host communities in Pakistan.Existing and upcoming development programmes in several sectors and across Pakistan will be partially adjusted to tackle challenges arising from Covid-19. Activities worth approxmately € 56 million will focus on:mass awareness raising among the population to reduce infection risk; strengthening diagnostic capacities; purchasing of protective gear and sanitary materials for the rural poor, for medical officers as well as for law enforcement staff; maintaining a helpline to ensure women’s safety during the crisis; helping people to generate income in order to avoid or address poverty due to the crisis; supporting vulnerable Small and Medium Enterprises (SME);  ensuring education for children; and supporting Covid-19- related policymaking. Payments worth over € 31 million to directly support the government budget are accelerated to provide the provincial governments of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh with the means to fund Covid-19 crisis responses. Civil society organizations across Pakistan are invited through a € 6.65 million call for proposals to address the social and economic impact of the crisis, while particularly involving young people.
