Guinea-Bissau leader sacks ministers

Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has dismissed five government ministers.

The ministers for defence, interior, economy, agriculture and energy were all dismissed in a decree on Sunday. No explanation was given for their sacking.

Their dismissal comes ahead of a parliamentary debate on Monday on which political alliances have the right to govern the country.

The country has been gripped by political turmoil for many years. President Embaló was announced as the winner of December’s election. However the long-time ruling party PAIGC said the elections were rigged.

The sacked ministers are all members of President’s Embalo’s Madem-15 party or parties loyal to the president, according to Reuters news agency.

“It is a strategy for Umaro Sissoco Embaló to gain the majority at the parliament,” the agency quotes a website Ditadura de Consenso as saying.

Guinea-Bissau has had nine coups or attempted coups since 1980.

Mr Embaló, a former army general, has said he wants to resolve tensions and modernise Guinea-Bissau – one of the world’s poorest nations.

12 new cases emerge as China battles second coronavirus wave

Beijing : China reported a slight decline in the number of coronavirus cases reported on Monday, as 12 more people tested positive for the virus down from 17 COVID-19 patients confirmed on Monday.

The National Health Commission (NHC) said in a statement that five of the new COVID-19 cases were so-called imported infections involving travellers from overseas, compared with three such cases reported a day earlier. The seven local infections were all in the capital city of Beijing.

Beijing had tested about a third of its population as of noon Sunday as part of the city government’s efforts to ensure the outbreak that emerged from the Xinfadi market did not spiral out of control.

A total of 311 people in the city, which has a population of more than 20 million, have tested positive for the virus since the first case linked to the market was reported on June 11.

Regions around Beijing remain on high alert. The county of Anxin, less than 100 miles from the Chinese capital, announced on Saturday that it would seal off residential compounds and villages until further notice.

Anxin, which forms a part of the Xiongan New Area launched in 2017 to provide living space for Beijing, has also instructed residents to stay indoors, with “the epidemic prevention and control situation now extremely serious”.

The NHC also reported six new asymptomatic cases as of the end of June 28, compared with seven such cases a day earlier.

The total number of COVID-19 cases for mainland China now stands at 83,512, while the total death toll remained unchanged at 4,634.

According to the IG, the attackers were reportedly wearing clothes usually worn by police officials while they are off-duty.

At least two attackers are seen disembarking from a blue sedan with weapons amidst sporadic firing in an unverified amateur video of the attack being shared on social media.

Police said the militants conducted the assault with sophisticated weapons and were carrying a bag that probably held explosives.

“All militants involved in the Pakistan Stock Exchange attack have been killed,” said Sindh Rangers.

CTD’s Raja Omar Khattab said that police would try to find out details about the car used by the owner. CCTV cameras are being monitored by law enforcement agencies to obtain clues.

LEAs have seized AK-47 rifles, hand grenades, magazines and other explosive material from the attackers.

How can SC suspend SHC verdict in Daniel Pearl case without solid reason, asks judge

ISLAMABAD : The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday once again rejected a request by the Sindh government to grant a stay order against the Sindh High Court’s (SHC) April 2 decision of overturning the conviction of four convicts in the American journalist Daniel Pearl murder case.

A bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Mushir Alam, took up appeals by the provincial government and two independent appeals by the parents of Daniel Pearl against the acquittal of the convicts.

Farooq H Naek, who represented the Sindh government, stated before the judges that the accused being global terrorists have been detained under maintenance of public order (MPO) after their acquittal.“How can you call the accused terrorists after acquittal,” questioned Justice Yahya Khan Afridi, a member of the bench, to which, the lawyer replied that one of them worked with a terrorist outfit in India while another with a banned organisation in Afghanistan.

Their release could have serious consequences, he cautioned.

Justice Mushir Alam asked how can the apex court suspend the SHC verdict without a solid reason. The verdict can be suspended in case there are any loopholes in the ruling, he observed.

The government can extend the accused’s detention under the MPO, if it wants, the SC judge suggested.

The hearing of the case was adjourned until December.

The heavily-militarised de-facto border separates Azad Kashmir from India-held Kashmir.

Our conscience doesn’t allow us to pass Budget 2020-21: opposition

The opposition parties have decided to call an All Parties Conference to formulate a “joint strategy” against the annual budget presented by the PTI government, the leaders of the opposition said Sunday.

“Today, the whole country has become united against the government because of this budget,” Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the PPP leader, said while addressing a press conference along with other leaders of the opposition in Islamabad. “All the opposition parties have rejected the budget,” Bilawal.”

The government of Prime Minister Imran Khan presented the Budget 2020-21 two weeks ago in parliament.

“Our conscience doesn’t allow us to pass such a budget,” Bilawal said, adding that the opposition parties are planning to convene an All Parties Conference as soon as PML-N leader Shehbaz Sharif recovers from the coronavirus.

“We wanted to convene an APC before the budget but Shahbaz Sharif’s health deteriorated,” said Bilawal.

Khawaja Asif, a PML-N leader, told reporters that the people were expecting a relief from the government in the budget due to ongoing coronavirus crisis. But, he added, that the government has put “intolerable burden” on people instead of providing them relief.

“Current Prime Minister Imran Khan has become a national liability,” said Asif. His government is leading us towards the destruction, he added.

The PML-N leader said that the time has come to “get rid” of PM Khan but said the opposition parties won’t choose any unconstitutional option to do so.

“We will use every constitutional option. No unconstitutional way will be used, we will protect the Constitution but we will use every constitutional option to get rid of Imran Khan,” said Asif.

Afridi urges world to take action against India’s ‘medieval plans to bring demographic change’ in IOJK

DNA

ISLAMABAD: JUNE 28 –  Chairman of Parliament’s Special Committee on Kashmir Shehryar Khan Afridi on Sunday strongly criticised the Indian fascist government for issuing domicile certificates to non-resident Indian nationals in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJK) and urged the world to act against Modis medieval plans to artificially bring a demographic change in the IOJK.

Reacting to the release of new domiciles to non-Kashmiri Indian citizens in IOJK. Afridi strongly condemned the racist Hindutva Supremacist Modi government’s continuing attempts to illegally alter the demography of IOJK in violation of all international laws & treaties as well as the 4th Geneva Convention.

“This move to grant domiciles to non-Kashmiris is meant to change the demographic status of the occupied territory as non-Kashmiris will flood into the region to diminish the Muslim majority,” Mr Afridi said, adding that since the matter was already in the UNSC for a plebiscite, no demographic change could be brought on the barrel of a gun in IOJK.
He said that the Hindu fascist Indian regime is exploiting the international focus on the Covid-19 pandemic to push forward the Hindutva Supremacist agenda.

Afridi further said that all Indian narratives on Kashmir have proven false. “It’s now proved that  India was never a democracy. It is a fascist coloniser using the notion of democracy. This isn’t only now killing and imprisoning Kashmiri Muslims in their own homes and land, but to wipe out, in a genocide carried out via laws and economic and population measures. An entire population is being decimated, and being replaced by bringing in outsiders from thousands of miles away to call them legal locals is a part of it.”
He said that the Indian state cannot be looked at as a normal or merely dysfunctional state anymore. “It is a rank fascist evil which must be exterminated from Kashmir. There can be no going back to any pre or earlier era, no solution is now possible sans the total elimination of Indian forces from Kashmir. And it is an ethical and moral duty of every human being to support the just cause of freedom from Indian occupation,” he said.
Afridi said that nothing like this has been attempted anywhere in the world as the ongoing genocide of Kashmiri Muslims is aimed at the extermination of Kashmiris as IoJK is only Muslim majority state in India. This is worse than simple military occupation. We are not living in medieval times where lands were conquered and people enslaved. But even worse is being done in 2020 in Kashmir, ” he argued.
Shehryar Afridi urged the United Nations and the world leaders to pressurise India that it must agree to UN mandate of self-determination in Kashmir per the UN resolutions as India itself had taken Kashmir issue to the UN and had promised a plebiscite to decide the dispute.
