Bilawal blasts PM Khan, says he now has only two options

ISLAMABAD, JUN 29 (DNA) – Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, speaking during the ongoing budget session in the National Assembly on Monday, blasted Prime Minister Imran Khan over the government’s Covid-19 response.

He said the premier now has only two options: either ask the public and the assembly for forgiveness for what he claimed destroying the national economy and endangering public lives or step down and let someone qualified take charge.

He said when the premier took notice of the wheat, flour, sugar, and masks issues, their prices went up. He taunted the prime minister, asking him to not take more notices of anything and instead put himself in self-quarantine instead of destroying the country.

Bilawal has demanded of Prime Minister Imran Khan to render an apology to the nation for ruining the economy of the country. He also strongly criticised Prime Minister Imran Khan for calling the notorious terrorist Osama Bin Laden, a “Shaheed”.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that Imran Khan used to criticise previous governments for petrol levy but his own government even before the budget was passed announced an unprecedented increase in petrol price.

This petrol bomb for people was introduced at a time when Pakistan is facing global recession, Covid-19 and locust attack which has destroyed growers of Pakistan. This increase is illegal and callous as OGRA was not consulted and the notification was not issued by OGRA.

He asked how a minister can issue the notification of petrol price increase which is totally illegal. He said that the government has robbed the people of Pakistan instead giving them relief.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari advised the Prime Minister Imran Khan to stop taking notices because whenever he has taken notice of anything, the prices have gone up. Khan took notice of increase in the price of medicine, he took notice of masks and the prices went further up, the prices went further up, he took notice of wheat price, the price went further up, he took notice of Sugar price, the price went further up so he should put himself in quarantine and stop taking notices.

Chairman PPP said that the government is putting blame of plane crash in Karachi on the pilot and the air traffic controller just to hide its own failures. Opposition had asked the government to keep suspending the flights until Covid-19 is under control but the government did not listen.

The aviation minister said that the pilots were talking about Corona before the plane went down. The aviation minister also said that there are fake degrees of pilots but the degree of the aviation minister was proved to be fake and he had left PPP and joined the PML-Q and then PTI. How a fake degree holder can accuse the pilots of fake degrees, he asked.

Bilawal said that this government thinks that every employment is political. This callous government refuses to increase the salaries and pensions of its own government employees. Now Pakistan is being defamed in all over the world. Sweden did not lockdown and the numbers of deaths in Sweden is very high and now similar strategy is being practiced in Pakistan.

The people of Sindh are facing power cuts on a regular basis but the federal government is unmoved. Our people are facing difficulties but the government is not providing them health facilities and power. We had asked government to tax rich but it has taxed poor people of Pakistan.

The PPP Chairman said that this budget cannot deal with the Covid-19, locust attacks, agriculture sector problems and sagging economy. The mantra of government is only “thief, thief” but none of the cases have been proved in any court of law.

PPP members have been absolved in all the cases against them. Recently, the former Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf was absolved from any wrong doing in rental power case so government should apologise to him, he demanded.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari very strongly condemned the Prime Minister Imran Khan who had called the notorious and disreputable terrorist Osama Bin Laden who martyred thousands of soldiers, men, women and children in Pakistan, a Shaheed.

Imran Khan does not call Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed who was killed by terrorists. He called Imran Khan a coward.  However, the speaker expunged the word “coward.”

Addressing the speaker, Chairman PPP said that he did not expunge the word Shaheed used for Osama Bin Laden by the Prime Minister Imran Khan. = DNA

Masood urges Turkey to play role of mediator to resolve Kashmir dispute

DNA

ISLAMABAD, JUNE 29 –  Sardar Masood khan, President Azad Jammu and Kashmir, has said that the people of Pakistan and Kashmir have reposed their full trust in the Turkish leadership who have recognized the Kashmir matter as not a bilateral one but as an issue between Pakistan, India and the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “We urge Turkey to play a mediatory role in helping resolve this long-standing dispute”, said the President.

The President made these remarks while addressing the opening session of the two-day international conference on “Kashmir: Regional and International Dimensions” organized by Faculty of Letters, Istanbul University. The event was attended by Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Shibli Faraz, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Turkey H.E Syrus Sajjad Qazi, Rector Istanbul University Prof. Dr. Mehmut AK, Member of Turkish Parliament and Chairman Turkey-Pakistan Parliamentary Friendship Group Mr. Ali Sahin, Lord Nazir Ahmed and Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai.

The President expressed his deepest gratitude to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who in his address to the Pakistani Parliament, in 2017 and 2020, expressed strong solidarity with the people of Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir and advocated a diplomatic solution for ascertaining the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination

The President said that people of Kashmir are indebted to President Erdogan for raising the Kashmir issue during last year’s United Nations General Assembly in which once again he reiterated a diplomatic resolution to the dispute and during which he sharply criticized India for the steps taken on 5th August that year.

People of Turkey and Kashmir, maintained the Masood Khan, have a strong bond because after the devastating 2005 earthquake, Turkey helped rebuild three major AJK cities. “A deep Turkish imprint has been left on the hearts and minds of the Kashmir people”, he said.

The President was deeply moved by the comments of Mr. Ali Sahin who expressed his solidarity with the Kashmiri people by saying “Children of Srinagar are children of Ankara. Women of Kashmir Valley are the women of Anatolia. Tears of the Kashmiri mothers are the tears of Turkish mothers”.

The AJK President said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have been striving for their liberty and freedom for the past 200 years; first, during the despotic rule of the Maharaja of Kashmir and now after 1947, against India’s rule in the occupied territory. Since 1947, 500,000 Kashmiris have been killed, thousands of women have been raped, young men and women of all ages have been blinded, people are illegally detained in concentration camps, he said. “Since 1989, 100,000 have been killed and the killing continues as we speak today”, said President Masood.

Masood Khan said that last year on August 5 India invaded the reoccupied Kashmir and is now trying to turn it into a colony. He added that India has divided the occupied territory into two parts – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh – and declared them Union territories, that too without the consent of its people. Furthermore, India has also issued fake maps showing Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and AJK as part of the Indian Union, he lamented.

On 2nd April this year, he said, India under its colonial policy has introduced New Domicile Rules whereby the people have been disenfranchised and denied their right to permanent residence, to owning property, access to reserved education and employment quota.

“In a matter of days, 25,000 non state Indians have been granted domiciles of Kashmir. The opening of these flood gates, such importation and immigration of Hindus from all over India and settling them in Kashmir to change the demographic composition of the occupied territory is akin to the model adopted in West Bank, Palestine”, he said.

The AJK President said that India is now also threatening Pakistan with war through the use of nuclear weapons with threats of military action against AJK and GB. “There is also a rise of Islamophobia in India which also has a direct and indirect impact on Muslims majority IOJK”, he said.

Commenting on the recent clash between India and China in Galwan Valley, the President said that this standoff has made the situation in IOJK more turbulent. China has objected to steps taken by India on August 5 and especially of making Ladakh a union territory, he said. “Because of the situation in Ladakh, Kashmir has been further internationalized”, he maintained.

China, said Masood, being a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council has helped Pakistan by facilitating the convening of three informal debates in the Council on Kashmir. There is also an indirect and implicit military alignment between Pakistan and China due to the threats of attack received to both these nations from India, he said.

“Due to the egregious steps taken by India there is a serious risk of war which could escalate to a nuclear level. If there is such a war it would affect not only the countries in the region but, in one way or the other, the whole world. There will be disease, death and destruction which could affect 2.5 billion people all over the world. There would be an economic recession and this war would be more dangerous than Covid-19”, he said.

President Masood said that another power-game has started in the Asia-Pacific region and on the line of actual control where attempts have been made to encircle China. In this situation, he said, the United States would give rhetorical help to India but it would not help it militarily against China despite the statements given by the United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. “China and India would eventually have to resort to diplomacy to defuse tensions”, he said.

Concluding his remarks, the President welcomed the UN Secretary General’s remarks on Kashmir and two reports on Kashmir published by the UN Office of the Human Rights Commission but said that these measures are not enough and more concrete steps have to be taken against India. He said that OIC member nations should initiate a Boycott, Divestment and Sanction movement against India. “Immediately, import of non-Halal meat and non-Halal products can be banned”, he said. He added that university to university relations between institutions in Turkey with those in Pakistan and AJK should be enhanced to help develop an academic discourse on conflict resolution.

The President urged the Turkish leadership to explore prospects of humanitarian diplomacy in IOJK in the same manner they had successfully done in Somalia and the Philippines. He said that Pakistan will be ready to help but Turkey should not take India’s no as an answer and help the Kashmiris who are passing through the darkest hour of their history.

Masood Khan thanked the Turkish people, media, political parties, academics and civil society for their continuing support to the Kashmir issue. He said that he had attended numerous conferences on Kashmir hosted by Turkish organizers like the seminal conference on “Kashmir Turmoil, Emerging Threats to Peace and the Role of International Community” co-organized by the Strategic Thinking Institute and Lahore Center for Peace Research.

Terrorist attack on heart of economy cowardly: EFP

KARACHI, JUN 29 (DNA) – Ismail Suttar, President of the Apex Body of Manufacturers, The Employers Federation of Pakistan (EFP), has said that the Pakistan Stock Exchange terrorist attack of June 29th 2020 is a direct and blatant attack on the heart of the economy. It is highly condemnable and at all levels, Employers Federation of Pakistan.

In a statement Monday, Ismail Suttar said that the country is faced with a severe COVID crisis and the government and business community are striving assiduously to somehow miraculously retract the economy toward a sustainable path of recovery.

Global markets are shuttered, exports are constrained and local manufacturers are facing acute liquidity and operational crisis.

“Our reserves are fast depleting below US$10 billion, remittances are not coming at usual rate and there is unnecessary hue and cry by opposition that is mired by corruption scandals of unchecked corruption at the hand of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and the sugar mafia.

Then there is tension across the Line of Control with India. Never in the history of Pakistan have we faced a GDP growth at -0.41% and unemployment as high as 10 percent. It is a time of great adversity. This entire calamity begs to be undone, not fueled”, he added.

The EFP salutes all security personnel who selflessly laid down their lives to protect the honor of this sacred location. = DNA

Russia is quietly occupying Ukraine’s information space

Vladimir Putin’s six-year military intervention in Ukraine has failed to reverse the country’s turn away from Russia, but the Kremlin leader is far from admitting defeat. On the contrary, his hybrid war against Ukraine remains at the heart of Russian foreign policy.

Over the past year, Putin has rejected international calls for a compromise with Ukraine’s new president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Instead, he has continued to publicly undermine Ukrainian statehood while signalling his readiness for a long-term geopolitical confrontation by fast-tracking the distribution of Russian passports to Ukrainian citizens in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine. There are also indications of a mounting Russian offensive in the Ukrainian information sphere, with the Kremlin acquiring indirect control over key media outlets in a bid to turn the tide of Ukrainian public opinion back in Moscow’s favor.

In June 2020, journalists from the respected investigative Ukrainian TV show “Schemes” (a joint project by Radio Liberty and UA:First TV channel) reported that Vladimir Putin’s closest ally in Ukraine, the pro-Kremlin politician Viktor Medvedchuk, has a 24.66% stake in Ukraine’s most popular TV channel 1+1. This claim, based on company records and Medvedchuk’s own asset statements, suggests that Medvedchuk is even more influential in the Ukrainian media industry than previously thought. Over the past few years, he has reportedly built up a formidable Ukrainian media empire via purchases fronted by partners and proxies. Acquisitions have included the TV news channels NewsOne, 112, and ZIK.

This creeping occupation of Ukraine’s information space has not gone unnoticed. Speaking in May 2020, former Ukrainian prime minister Arseniy Yatseniuk complained that the country was in grave danger of losing control over the domestic information arena due to increasingly direct Russian influence. “Putin controls 50% of the news channels in Ukraine, so he can easily control 50% of the minds and hearts of Ukrainians,” commented the ex-PM.

Moscow’s efforts to build a Ukrainian media empire should come as no surprise. Putin has always placed great importance on control over the media. In the early days of his presidency, he moved quickly to muzzle Russia’s fledgling free press. Years later, during Russia’s 2014 offensives in Crimea and eastern Ukraine, Putin’s forces prioritized the seizure of broadcasting infrastructure and made sure Ukrainian TV channels were forced off the air.

Dominating the media environment in the rest of Ukraine has proven somewhat trickier. Since 2014, the Ukrainian authorities have banned the broadcast of Russian TV channels and placed restrictions on Russian-produced TV content. Meanwhile, the oligarch owners of Ukraine’s major media holdings have largely fallen in line with public patriotism and backed the country’s efforts to defend itself against Russian aggression. This has left the Kremlin with little choice but to acquire Ukrainian media assets of its own.

The choice of Medvedchuk to lead Russia’s media offensive hints at the significance of the undertaking. While there are still large numbers of influential pro-Kremlin figures in Ukrainian politics and business, none are as personally close to Putin as Medvedchuk. In 2017, the Financial Times wrote about the re-emergence of Medvedchuk from the shadows, claiming “Many suspect him of being Mr Putin’s agent.”

In his highly praised book “All the Kremlin’s Men. Inside the Court of Vladimir Putin”, author Mikhail Zygar goes even further, saying that Medvedchuk has long been “the main source of information about what was happening in Ukraine” and the only person Putin trusts in Ukraine. According to Zygar, Medvedchuk is “effectively Putin’s special representative in Ukraine”.

Medvedchuk first rose to national prominence in Ukraine during the 1990s as the leader of the United Social Democratic Party of Ukraine. Prior to his current role as Putin’s unofficial representative in Ukraine, the pinnacle of Medvedchuk’s political career had been his stint as chief of staff to Ukraine’s second president Leonid Kuchma. While in this position, he was accused of orchestrating media campaigns against Ukrainian opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko, who was depicted as a dangerous nationalist. Zygar believes that even then, Medvedchuk “shared some of the ‘Ukrainophobia’ of Moscow officialdom”.

Medvedchuk’s relationship with Putin dates back to his time in the Kuchma administration. The two initially met within the framework of bilateral dialogue and grew sufficiently close for Putin to become godfather to Medvedchuk’s daughter in 2004. As if to underline the Kremlin connection, the child’s godmother was Svetlana Medvedeva, the wife of Putin loyalist Dmitry Medvedev.

Following Ukraine’s pro-democracy 2004 Orange Revolution, Medvedchuk’s political fortunes declined. With his United Social Democratic Party of Ukraine increasingly eclipsed by the rising might of the Donetsk-based Party of Regions, Medvedchuk sought to reinvent himself as the leader of the “Ne Tak” party, which campaigned against Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic integration. The expensive project failed to make an impression, attracting just 1% of votes in Ukraine’s 2006 parliamentary election.

Medvedchuk then spent a number of years out of the limelight before returning to the Ukrainian political fray in 2012 with the launch of the “Ukrainian Choice” movement. This new political initiative was designed to play a prominent role in the campaign against Ukraine’s plans to sign an association agreement with the EU. Instead of European integration, Medvedchuk lobbied for Ukraine to join the Moscow-led Eurasian Economic Union.

As part of this strategy, Putin and Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill were both invited to a summer 2013 conference in Kyiv that aimed to promote Ukraine’s embrace of “Orthodox values” and signal the country’s membership of the “Russian World”. Other noteworthy aspects of the campaign included homophobic posters equating European integration with same-sex marriage. Despite these efforts, President Yanukovych’s decision to back away from Ukraine’s planned EU association agreement sparked mass protests that escalated into the 2013-14 Euromaidan Revolution, resulting in Ukraine’s historic pivot towards the Western world.

During the early years of the undeclared Russo-Ukrainian War that erupted in the wake of the Euromaidan Revolution, Medvedchuk continued his political comeback by serving as the Kremlin’s preferred contact for negotiations on prisoner exchanges. In 2018, he confirmed his status as Ukraine’s most influential pro-Russian politician, taking on a leadership role as Chairperson of the Opposition Platform-For Life Party, which went on to secure a distant but credible second place in Ukraine’s July 2019 parliamentary election.

Medvedchuk’s latest political vehicle shares the Kremlin-friendly agenda of his earlier initiatives. The party benefits considerably from the favorable coverage provided by his expanding media empire, and has succeeded in eclipsing its Russophile rivals among the traditionally Moscow-leaning electorate in southern and eastern Ukraine. However, with a voter base heavily concentrated in the pensioner age group, it is unclear whether the Opposition Platform-For Life project has the potential for significant further growth.

This is part of a broader trend that does not bode well for the Kremlin. Support for pro-Russian parties has plummeted since the start of Russian aggression in 2014, with Medvedchuk and other Russophile political forces collectively winning less than 20% of the vote in Ukraine’s 2019 presidential and parliamentary elections. This is a far cry from the 40% to 50% share the country’s pro-Russian candidates routinely secured prior to the war.

The sharp decline in support for pro-Kremlin parties helps explain why Russia appears intent on securing a stronger position for itself on the Ukrainian media landscape. Media backing will be crucial as the Kremlin seeks to transform Ukrainian public opinion and undo the damage of the past six years.

There are already signs that the process is underway. In the current climate, it would make little sense for Ukrainian media outlets controlled by Moscow to flood the country’s information space with pro-Putin messaging. However, TV channels associated with Medvedchuk have played a prominent role in recent campaigns to discredit Ukraine’s reform agenda and promote a spate of anti-American narratives. This tallies closely with Kremlin efforts elsewhere to drive a wedge between Ukraine and the country’s Western partners while dampening domestic enthusiasm for Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic trajectory.

In his personal statements, Medvedchuk displays no such discretion and is entirely open about his pro-Kremlin position. Speaking to the BBC last summer, he admitted to feeling negatively towards the majority of Ukrainians who regard Russia as the aggressor. He has also repeatedly accused Ukraine’s leadership of “primitive Russophobia” and “anti-Russian hysteria.”

Will the Ukrainian government respond to looming threat of information occupation? Back in August 2019, President Zelenskyy raised the prospect of a major probe into the financing of Medvedchuk’s political party and media interests. “There are big questions about where they get money for their party and their television channels. We know about cash amounts, and we know which country it comes from. This will be a very big scandal and it will end very badly for them,” commented Zelenskyy. However, no further action was forthcoming. Likewise, Zelenskyy declined to intervene in spring 2020 when Medvedchuk led a delegation of Ukrainian MPs to Moscow.

With President Zelenskyy apparently unwilling to confront Medvedchuk, it looks like Putin’s favorite Ukrainian will continue to play the role of Moscow’s unofficial ambassador in Kyiv for some time to come. With a career stretching back three decades to the early years of independence, Medvedchuk is one of the great survivors in the treacherous world of Ukrainian politics. He has arguably never been more powerful than he is today. As well as occupying a prominent role in the country’s party politics, Medvedchuk’s expanding media portfolio makes him one of Ukraine’s key opinion shapers.

The national security implications of Medvedchuk’s rise are as ominous as they are obvious. At a time when Ukraine is struggling to defend itself against a seventh consecutive year of Russian aggression, it is hard to imagine anything more reckless than allowing Putin’s closest Ukrainian ally to assemble a media empire in the country. Ever since 2014, the information arena has been the decisive front in Russia’s hybrid war against Ukraine. In Medvedchuk, Moscow may finally have found the key to securing ultimate victory.
