Telenor Pakistan joins hands with PRCS

ISLAMABAD – 7 July 2020: President Dr. Arif Alvi has said that the affluent section of society needed to support the relief efforts of the government and help the poor families affected by Covid-19 Pandemic. He said the Pandemic had brought many economic and social challenges which could be met by the joint efforts of all segments of society. The President expressed these views while talking to the CEO, Telenor Pakistan, Mr. Irfan Wahab Khan, who called on him, at Aiwan-e-Sadr, today.

The CEO Telenor presented a donation worth of Rs. 61 million to the President to support the relief efforts of the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) against Covid-19 in the country. He informed the President that Telenor Pakistan had joined hands with PRCS to provide food ration packs for 4500 poor families in nine districts and Personal Protective Equipments to doctors and Paramedics in eleven districts of the country affected by Covid-19.

The President appreciated the contribution provided by the Telenor to help the poor families and support the relief efforts of PRCS.

Emirates Sky Cargo expands cargo connectivity to 100 destinations

Dubai, UAE,  – Emirates SkyCargo will be operating scheduled cargo flights to 100 destinations across six continents during the month of July 2020. Some of the new cities added to the air cargo carrier’s network include Accra, Algiers, Athens, Fort Lauderdale, Glasgow, Larnaca, Los Angeles, Male, Moscow (SVO), Phnom Penh, Rome, Santiago, Sialkot and Tunis.

Emirates SkyCargo’s network expansion is in response to the growing economic activity and demand for air cargo capacity from markets across the world along with Emirates’ increased passenger flight operations. By offering multiple daily or weekly cargo flight frequencies to major production and consumer markets, the carrier is helping facilitate supplies of goods required for combatting the current pandemic as well as machinery and equipment required for manufacturing and several key economic sectors across global trade lanes.In addition to scheduled services, Emirates SkyCargo also operates a number of special charter flights every week to transport a range of commodities from Personal Protective Supplies (PPE) and pharmaceuticals to food and outsized machinery and components.

The freight division of Emirates offers an innovative range of cargo capacity options for businesses and exporters on its modern, wide-body aircraft fleet. In addition to loading of cargo in the belly hold, Emirates SkyCargo has introduced loading of select cargo on the passenger seats and in the overhead bins of the passenger cabin of its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. Recently the carrier also modified 10 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft from its fleet by removing seats from the Economy Class in the passenger cabin to make room for additional cargo. Emirates SkyCargo also operates 11 Boeing 777 F full freighters currently deployed to over 30 destinations every week.

Emirates SkyCargo places a strong emphasis on the safety of operations. Working with its partners, including ground handlers, the carrier has introduced a number of strict guidelines on cabin loading of cargo covering the type of permitted cargo as well as proper packaging and handling in accordance with IATA guidelines.

RCCI virtual Rawal Expo

RAWALPINDI, JULY 7 – A delegation of Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) called on Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Measures Asad Umar in Islamabad yesterday. The delegation comprised of President Saboor Malik,  group leader and former president Sohail Altaf, Senior Vice President Nosherwan Khalil, Vice President Hamza Sarosh, Chairman Expo Rawal Expo Nasir Mirza and Chairman Regional Trade Khurshid Berlas.

The delegation briefed the minister on RCCI Rawal Expo and other activities of the chamber.

On this occasion, Federal Minister  inaugurated the pre-launch of RCCI Virtual International Rawal Expo 2020. The minister assured full support from his ministry regarding the expo. He said that through digital platform, domestic and local products can be better advertised. He welcomed the initiative of expo being organized amid Covid-19.

The Virtual International Rawal Expo will run from August 7 to August 16. What is special about the virtual platform is that there is no time limit for participating in the exhibition. Any stall holder or visitor will be able to participate in the exhibition on the online platform at any time in 24 hours. Companies from various sectors including electronics, Pharmaceuticals, garments, engineering, machinery, and food will be able to display their products in the exhibition.

Wheat crisis intensified in surrounding areas

ATTOCK, JULY 7 (DNA) – Wheat crops in Hazro, Pindi Gheb, Jand, Fateh Jang and surrounding areas were completely destroyed due to heavy rains during the wheat season.

The crops that have been harvested are not edible. Some of the traders who were issued orders for the demarcation of the district, procured wheat from different parts of the Punjab through their own means, which was also provided to them after paying a heavy price.

Local traders told media persons that the government should issue orders for demarcation instead of demarcation.

Wheat is available in large quantities in Punjab but due to demarcation, wheat is not going to other districts. He appealed to the Punjab Chief Minister Usman Bazdar to issue orders to abolish wheat district in Punjab so that the people can buy wheat as per the government rate.DNA

Good news: WHO glad Pakistan’s coronaviruses cases dropping

The World Health Organisation has appreciated Pakistan’s effort to control the spread of coronavirus. “@WHO is glad to see that cases in Pakistan have been in decline since early June & we appreciate your strong surveillance efforts to fight the pandemic,” said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus in a Twitter post.

Pakistan’s smart lockdown was imposed on June 17, when there were 160,118 cases in the country. Around that time, between 4,000 to 5,000 cases were being reported daily.

As of July 6, the COVID-19 tally stands at 234,509 and close to 3,000 new cases are being reported on a daily basis. On June 6, 2,691 new cases were recorded.

Due to country’s current situation, the UK and European Union have not allowed Pakistanis to enter. Prime Minister Imran Khan has asked the WHO to look into travel restrictions for Pakistan and other low-income countries.

AIOU starts construction of regional office in Sukkur

SUKKUR, Jul 07 (DNA) : Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) in a bid to increase its access to the whole country, has started construction of Regional Office in Sukkur.

The project has been launched to reinforce AIOUs existing services which it renders for promotion of education in the country.

According to AIOU Regional Office Sukkur In Charge, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Dr Zia Qayyoom has recently expedited the expansion of outreach system of the varsity to reach every nuke and corner of the country and to provide educational facilities to all interested people, especially the lower social stratum at their doorstep and this connection, the budget allocations have been earmarked in the budget 2020-21 of the university. The land demarcation and handing over the land to the concerned contractor of the project was held in Sukkur.

The land for the Regional Office Sukkur has been given by the Revenue department of Sindh. Currently the Sukkur regional office operates in a rented building. It is to mention here that Regional Office Sukkur covers four important districts including Sukkur, Khairpur Mirs, Ghotki and Kashmore. It covers almost 20 different tehsils of all four districts with a population of around 5 million.

According to the regional incharge, people of Sindh were very thankful to Vice Chancellor AIOU, Prof. Dr Ziaul Qayyum and Director Regional Services Inamullah Shaikh for their commitment towards expanding the regional network of AIOU with independent buildings in the province of Sindh. He informed that Regional Center Sukkur had enrollment of around 4500 students from different programmes, and the construction of new customized building as per the needs of the AIOU education system would help them.

Pandemic caries long term economic repercussions for global economies: Sadiq Sanjrani

Islamabad, JULY 7 –  Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani has said that Covid-19 pandemic carries long term economic repercussions for global economies specially the developing world and more coordinated efforts are required to overcome the diseases on one hand and work together for economies to flourish.

He expressed these views in a meeting with British High Commissioner Dr. Christian Turner in Islamabad on Tuesday. He said that developed as well the developing world is faced with similar challenge, however, the developing countries lack infrastructure and resources to effectively flatten the covid 19 curve.

Chairman Senate observed that the virus is spreading in Pakistan, however, government is making all out efforts to bring the deadly disease under control through lockdown, testing, tracing and quarantine. Sanjrani also expressed deep condolences on behalf of the Parliament for the loss of human lives due to corona virus.

Regarding bilateral relations, the Senate Chairman expressed satisfaction that both sides enjoy good relations at different level and there was need to further enhance mutual collaboration in different sectors including frequent parliamentary exchanges and other high level visits.

He said that Pakistan highly values it bilateral ties with United Kingdom and we desire to further expand our relations in different sectors. Sadiq Sanjrani said that enhanced parliamentary linkages and institutional collaboration would help in building consensus on many issues. Senate Chairman stated that Baluchistan and specially Gwadar offering abundant opportunities for investment as Gwadar is being regarded as future of regional development.

He further said that United Kingdom has provided huge assistance to Pakistan for social sector development.  He also thanked the government and parliament of UK for adopting stance on Kashmir issue.

Illegal car showrooms sealed

ATTOCK, JULY 7 (DNA) – National Highways and Motorways Police (NHMP) in a crackdown sealed many illegal showrooms and impounded the vehicles in taxila on GT road.

The operation was led by DSP Motorway police Nadeem Gul Shah, accompanied by Admin Officer Abbas Raza , Ops Offcer Nasir Hussain Gillani and Ops Officer Muhammad Iqbal Astori.

During the operation one hotel and ten illegal showrooms were sealed, while a large number of vehicles were impounded and heavy fines were imposed. Cases were registered against the showrooms owners.

The DSP, on the occasion said according to the government orders all businesses were to remain closed on Sundays.The showrooms were kept open on these days which was violation of the existing rules.

He said the crackdown would continue and action would be taken against those who would keep their showrooms open on Sundays. DNA

PARC signs LOI with Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA)

Islamabad, JULY 7  –  Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) and Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI), to establish an advanced Queen Bee Research Lab and domestication of modern Turkish bee hive in Pakistan. Program coordinator (TIKA), Mr. Gokhan Umut, visited PARC HQs for the purpose on July 3, 2020.

PARC is the apex national organization in Pakistan working in close collaboration with public and private sector institutions in the country to provide science based solutions for the development of agriculture in Pakistan whereas Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) is a government development and donor agency of the Republic of Turkey having its headquarter in Ankara. Turkey has already entered into MOU with Government of Pakistan and has been working towards sustainable development projects in Pakistan. TIKA involves sharing of Turkey’s development experience and cooperation with other countries and its projects extend from technical infrastructure to corporate capacity increase.

Under this project PARC and Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) will ensure the implementation and collaboration of the TIKA-PARC advanced queen Research Lab project at Honey Bee Research Institute (HBRI), NARC. The parties will cooperate in joint research for establishing advance Honey Bee Queen Research Lab with molecular level research facilities at Honey Bee Research Institute (HBRI), NARC and domestication and adaptation of Turkish model bee hive in Pakistan for higher honey production and colony productivity. TIKA will also assist in up gradation, renovation installation of research gadgets and will ensure the provision of 50 Turkish Model Bee hives for research purpose and demonstration to beekeepers.

Pakistan-made drones to help battle locust swarms

ISLAMABAD : After manufacturing the country’s first locally developed ventilators, the National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) announced on Tuesday that it has prepared Pakistan-made drones to tackle locust swarms.

According to details, the Pakistani engineers have prepared locally made drones for farmers to kill and contain locust swarms in the country.

Drones will be used to spray insecticides and pesticides on fields in the country. The NRTC said that ‘Made in Pakistan’ drones will be available in markets across the country at a very low cost.

It is pertinent to mention here that Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhary had tasked Pakistani engineers to prepare drones.
Prime Minister Imran Khan was also briefed by NRTC on Monday about the manufacturing of locally made drones to control locust swarms. The prime minister had inaugurated the production facility of first-ever indigenously developed ventilators.

It may be noted that a concerted operation against locust swarms in the country has thus far sprayed 2.4 million acres of land mass with insecticides and pesticides to keep the infestation at bay.

The operation has thus far been carried out in 41 districts of Pakistan, a total of 972 teams are actively participating in the campaign to rid the country of locusts.
