Pakistan against arms race in region, says FO spokesperson

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has urged the international community to dissuade India from its disproportionate arms build-up which could lead to an arms race in South Asia.

Addressing weekly news briefing in Islamabad on Thursday, FO Spokesperson Aisha Farooqui said the world is already a witness to the bellicose and irresponsible rhetoric by the BJP Government in pursuit of a revisionist agenda in the neighbourhood.

Reacting to the reports of recent acquisition of Rafale jets by Indian Air Force, the Spokesperson said India continues to amass military capabilities beyond its genuine security requirement. The Spokesperson said Pakistan has been consistently highlighting the risks of massive Indian arms buildup as well as their offensive security doctrine and force postures, which are adversely affecting strategic stability in South Asia.

She said this arms buildup is being aided and abetted through a policy of exemptions, waivers and supply of advanced equipment, technology and weapons for narrow commercial interests.

On Pakistan’s part, she said, we remain open to consideration of measures for crisis management, risk reduction, and strategic restraint.

While remaining opposed to any arms race in South Asia, she said Pakistan cannot remain oblivious to these developments and remains confident of its ability to thwart any ill-considered act of aggression.

The FO Spokesperson strongly condemned restrictions imposed by Indian authorities on Eid-ul-Azha prayers in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

She said imposition of restrictions on prayers on one of the most important days of the Islamic calendar represents complete disrespect by the Indian government for the sentiments of the Muslims of Illegally Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

She said it is also a flagrant violation of their fundamental freedom of religion.

She urged the international community, the United Nations, and human rights and humanitarian organizations to take notice of glaring denial of the religious rights and freedoms of the Kashmiri people in violation of international laws and conventions.

Commenting on ceasefire offer by Taliban in Afghanistan during Eid, Aisha Farooqui said that Pakistan welcomes all steps for promoting peace in the neighboring country according to Doha Agreement.

Replying a question about COVID-19, she said that cases in Pakistan are signific

Eid-ul Adha: Pakistanis rush to car cleaners to have sacrificial animals scrubbed down

KARACHI: In the run-up to the festival of Eid al-Adha, Karachi car-wash owner Sheikh Sagheer sees much of the traffic at his business switch from four wheels to four legs.

Locals bring him their cattle, sheep and goats for a thorough scrub down ahead of the animals´ sacrifice during the three-day religious holiday, which begins Friday in Pakistan.

Sagheer, 42, said the cow wash started when he was spotted cleaning his sacrificial animal ahead of Eid after opening his business a few years ago.

“The people who saw me washing the animal came to me with their own… that´s how this trend started.

Many of the animals come from a huge market on the outskirts of Karachi — reputed to be the largest Eid cattle bazaar in Asia — that is packed with goats, cows, bullocks, sheep and camels.

The creatures are often dirty, dusty and speckled with dung after being transported then packed together at the market.

Sagheer charges just 100 rupees (about 60 cents) for a wash — which includes a soak with a pressure hose, a lather with suds, a scrub and a rinse.

“The charge is 100 rupees, which is nothing,” said Mohammad Uzair, who brought in a large grey cow for a wash.

Across Pakistan, between eight and 10 million animals are sacrificed over Eid al-Adha, according to the Pakistan Tanners Association.

Sagheer says cleanliness is especially important because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I make it a point to sanitise the animal with disinfectants,” he said.

AMERICA PROVIDES AN ADDITIONAL 100 VENTILATORS TO PAKISTAN TO SUPPORT COVID-19 RECOVERY

Islamabad, July 30, 2020 :  In partnership, Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority and the United States Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), are working together to fight COVID-19 by contributing a second shipment of 100 respiratory ventilators.

The ventilators arrived in Islamabad on July 28 and will be deployed in hospitals across Pakistan.  The arrival of these ventilators delivers on President Donald Trump’s promise to Prime Minister Imran Khan to stand with the people of Pakistan and bring additional critically needed supplies and support to Pakistan’s urgent response to the pandemic.  The first 100 ventilators arrived on July 3 and have already been delivered to hospitals and healthcare facilities throughout Pakistan.

“The United States is a proud partner with the Government of Pakistan to help stem the tide of this deadly pandemic and these ventilators will help with that fight,” said Ambassador Paul W. Jones.

The ventilators can also be used to provide non-invasive respiratory therapy for patients before they become critically ill and help avoid the need for more extreme care.  In addition, these ventilators can help treat a number of other respiratory ailments outside of the COVID-19 virus, including pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Through a specialized training program developed with the National Disaster Management Authority and the Federal and Provincial Ministries of Health, and with funding from USAID, Pakistan will have a stronger arsenal with which to fight COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses.

The U.S-Pakistan long-standing partnership in the health sector is strengthening the country’s ability to fight coronavirus by improving and expanding laboratory testing, disease monitoring, case tracking, infection prevention and control, and patient care.  The United States is contributing more than $28 million in new funding so far for COVID-19 response to this vital partnership that is growing every day.
